Locked On Devils - Daily Podcast On The New Jersey Devils

The Hometown Remix jerseys debuted to some mixed (and amusing) results across the league. What did you think about the New Jersey Devils new sweater? Plus, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl come to town, likely leading to a major test for Nico Hischier. Evan Rodrigues is battling illness, which could limit the Devils depth down the lineup against an Oilers group that has still struggled when both McDavid and Draisaitl aren't on the ice. Could Anthony Mantha perhaps take advantage of a softer matchup?

The New Jersey Devils 2-1-0 stretch out west included two brilliant wins and one unsurprising 'schedule' loss. Plus, it was a banner month in New Jersey (after a slow start). We reveal our stars of the month from a crowded field of potentials, including high praise for Arseny Gritsyuk, Luke Hughes, Brett Pesce and a not-so-surprising reveal for the first star.

It's Metro Monday. Alex Wiederspiel and Jess Amato take a few minutes to give the thumbs up or the thumbs down to the other seven teams in the Metropolitan Division. Hint: Canes up, Rangers down.

Zach Berman opens the episode by expressing exhaustion over the ongoing Quinn Hughes saga, emphasizing that the week is considered "make-or-break" regarding Hughes' future with the Minnesota Wild. Recapping developments, Zach Berman points out how earlier in the summer it seemed inevitable Hughes would re-sign in Minnesota by July 1st, but growing uncertainty and hints of indecision from Hughes have since cast significant doubt on that outcome. By this point, the likelihood of Hughes signing long-term with the Wild is considered slim, and Zach Berman now anticipates Hughes will test free agency next summer instead of committing to Minnesota in any form this offseason.

Zach Berman further analyzes the dilemma this causes for the Wild: is retaining Hughes as a rental worth the risk of losing him for nothing? Though New Jersey Devils fans are eager for a reunion of the Hughes brothers, Zach Berman cautions that such a move is unlikely before next offseason. He speculates that Minnesota could even trade Hughes elsewhere in the Metropolitan Division out of spite, making it purposefully difficult for New Jersey to acquire him and potentially favoring rivals like Philadelphia, Washington, Edmonton, or Tampa Bay, all of whom might be "one Quinn Hughes away" from a strong playoff run.

Turning to the media landscape, Zach Berman criticizes inconsistent and speculative reporting around the saga. He highlights contradictions between reports—from claims of ongoing negotiations to others stating there have been none—and frustrations about the media putting words in Hughes’ mouth or ascribing motives, obligations, and future decisions to the player. Zach Berman argues that Hughes owes nothing to his current or potential teams, and that he should be free to make his own choices without narrative pressure.

The latter part of the episode shifts to Devils-specific questions as rookies prepare to report. Zach Berman discusses issues such as the short leash for coach Sheldon Keefe, the necessity for aggressive management from Sunny Mehta, questions about Jack Hughes’ health, the team’s finishing ability, Luke Hughes’ development, and especially the ongoing concern in goal. He concludes by emphasizing that the Devils’ past inactivity has often been their downfall, and that this season's success hinges on real urgency and adaptability across the organization.

Rookie training camp for the New Jersey Devils is set to begin in Newark this week, with both rookies and veterans preparing for the new NHL season. Zach Berman highlights the improved forward depth on the Devils’ roster compared to previous years, noting the team’s ability to withstand potential injuries, such as a hypothetical Jack Hughes absence. The Devils’ depth is considerable even with cap constraints and several hefty contracts still on the books, a testament to the work of Sonny Mehta in assembling a deeper group of forwards. Questions remain about which players could be moved to free up cap space or bring in other assets, with Dawson Mercer, Stefan Noesen, and Nick Bjugstad among the names mentioned as possible trade candidates 04:27.

Goaltending remains another area of focus for the Devils heading into the season. Zach Berman addresses trade speculation spurred by Jeff Marek, who suggested the Devils might look to the Buffalo Sabres for goaltending help, particularly if the Sabres acquire Connor Hellebuyck and seek to offload Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (UPL) or Alex Lyon. Zach Berman breaks down the pros and cons of each goalie, with UPL offering a higher ceiling but carrying a higher salary, and Lyon having familiarity with the Devils’ front office and a more affordable contract 16:22. The uncertainty in Buffalo and Winnipeg’s goaltending situations could create opportunities for the Devils.

Despite speculation, Zach Berman expresses cautious optimism about the Devils’ current trio of goaltenders—Jake Allen, Nico Daws, and David Rittich (“Big Save Dave”)—admitting the group lacks star power but could be effective with the team’s strong forward depth and possible "Moneyball" style management. He cautions, however, that if the tandem underperforms, management must be proactive in seeking upgrades rather than being complacent. Recent NHL trends suggest that elite goaltending is less essential than strong team defense and forward depth for playoff success, adding some reassurance to the Devils’ roster construction 20:50.

Rookie camp excitement is high, especially surrounding prospects like Anton Silayev and the development of recent draft classes. Zach Berman notes that this year’s rookie pool is poised to answer major questions, especially regarding Silayev’s skating and potential future role on defense. Overall, the mood is one of cautious excitement and anticipation—not just to see which young players emerge, but also to understand management’s vision for deploying and developing talent as the Devils aim for greater team success this season 27:11.

The conversation focused on anticipation around the New Jersey Devils potentially extending Luke Evangelista before the season opener October 1st, highlighting excitement about locking up a key young player long-term 00:00:52 and the rationale behind such a move. One concept discussed was the organization's shift toward accountability and raising internal standards, as evidenced by recent candid player interviews and decisive moves by new GM Sunny Mehta, such as trading for Evangelista and quickly extending key players like Nico Hischier 00:01:09.

A key theme that emerged was comparison with other NHL contract negotiations, notably the uncertainty in Minnesota regarding a Quinn Hughes extension 00:11:15, and how this situation affects team planning, cap management, and overall direction. The discussion explored the strategic importance for the Devils in acquiring Evangelista, his projected value, and what his contract might look like—potentially up to eight years with an annual value between $7 and $8.5 million, referencing comparables like Alexis Lafreniere and Owen Tippett 00:22:19.

Several points were raised, including the idea that Nashville traded Evangelista partly due to their own cap constraints, and that New Jersey’s proactive approach to securing young talent marks a deliberate effort to change the team’s competitive trajectory 00:21:17. The conversation closed on the significance of creating a playoff-contending culture, with Evangelista and other players expressing a desire to experience meaningful postseason play in New Jersey and the need for the Devils to deliver on heightened expectations 00:26:53.

Zach Berman opens the episode reflecting on the slow free agency market and the notable number of established NHL players still without contracts heading into mid-August. He highlights several forwards who might fit the New Jersey Devils' needs, such as Eeli Tolvanen—who remains unsigned despite solid underlying metrics and a productive previous season. Other available names include Patrick Laine, Vladimir Tarasenko, Michael Bunting, Nick Blankenberg, James van Riemsdyk, David Perron, and former Devil Adam Henrique, though Zach Berman expresses mixed opinions on whether each would truly help the team’s roster 00:01:10-00:08:23.

Turning to defense and goaltending, Zach Berman notes the potential for PTO (Professional Tryout) invitations to bolster organizational depth, mentioning that the Devils might consider bringing in someone like Connor Ingram—a goalie with recent playoff experience and a background of overcoming adversity. He also discusses the possibility of veteran blueliners such as Mike Reilly, adding that injuries on the back end last season demonstrated the importance of reliable defensive depth 00:12:16-00:15:23.

Zach Berman lists additional free agents who could theoretically be targeted for PTOs, including Matt Murray, Pavol Regenda, Jeff Petry, Calle Järnkrok, Jesse Puljujärvi, Riley Smith, and Matt Grzelcyk. He stresses that while the Devils have options available, they may not be particularly aggressive in pursuing any of these players, possibly choosing to leave cap space open for future opportunities or trade deadline moves—hinting at the ongoing rumors around a possible pursuit of Connor Hellebuyck but noting it seems unlikely at this stage 00:16:23-00:18:44.

The episode wraps up with brief updates on staff changes within the Devils organization and some lighter commentary on offseason news, including fan culture and upcoming schedule highlights. Zach Berman invites listeners to participate in the conversation by suggesting which PTO candidates or remaining free agents they’d like to see the Devils pursue, underscoring the unusually deep market of available talent as the new season approaches 00:19:09-00:26:45.
