The Orlando Magic have increased their 3-point volume, but have they gone too far?

The Magic again shot worse than 30 percent from three and nearly took half of their field goal attempts from beyond the arc in a 103-94 loss to the Washington Wizards. The increased volume has helped modernize the Magic's offense, but the team is lacking any other way to attack. That has put the Magic at a deficit.

The 3-point shooting dried up after a hot start. Orlando fell behind and it could not catch up without a more reliable way to score.

As the Magic try to find their way to win, they are looking for the last piece to get them over the hump. So far this season it has been elusive. But an upcoming road trip could give the Magic the relief and the opportunity they need.

The Orlando Magic are still trying to put their pieces together and come out with a win and some consistent play.

Turnovers and rebounds have been a major story holding the team back all season. It was a deciding factor in Sunday's loss to the Boston Celtics. The Celtics took control in the first half behind their pressure defense and tenacity on the glass.

Boston won the possession game, and that put Orlando in a hole. The Magic may have come back, but they did not have the shots in the end. A strong opening would have given the Magic a better chance to win and some confidence as they build with this new coaching staff.

The Orlando Magic had to answer the call after a blowout defeat against the Toronto Raptors. After giving up their lead in the fourth quarter, they answered with a final run to deliver a win to start their NBA Cup journey.

The Magic are still learning how to win in the Sean Sweeney offense and defense. Those hiccups have characterized the first week of the season. But pieces of that formula -- from the team's hot shooting, ball movement and interior defense -- began to emerge to score the impressive 121-114 victory.

The Magic are finding their formula to win. But one piece is still missing this season. The Magic are not dominating the paint like they did in years past. Orlando is still finding its formula for victory.

But they have some momentum to keep building and improving.

The Orlando Magic have stumbled out of the gates to a 1-3 start. While there are positive signs, there are a lot of warning lights going off.

The offense has had two anemic games scoring less than a point per possession. The defense has shown some signs but has also struggled. Injuries have overtaken the team, costing them two starters.

It is not time to panic. But the Magic do not look like they have addressed many of their key needs even with an improved offensive approach. And the task is only harder with the injuries the team is facing.

The fans who are pessimistic about this team's chances may have a point. The team's inactive summer only leaves the team further handicapped without a clear way to improve and a certain cap crunch affecting their next move.

Orlando may have missed its chance to meaningfully improve.

The Magic get their chance to begin finding some redemption with Friday's NBA Cup opener against the Toronto Raptors. Orlando used the NBA Cup to prove they could win. This year, though, figuring out their identity and style are far more important than the NBA's in-season trophy.

The Toronto Raptors smothered the Orlando Magic in a 129-99 rout, exposing the Magic's long-standing offensive issues. The Magic still alck enough players who can attack off the dribble and handle the ball under pressure.

Orlando committed 20 turnovers, including seven from Franz Wagner as the Raptors effectively took him out of the game. The Magic's two stars and all of their main ball-handlers struggled to deal with the pressure and the Raptors gained plenty of separation and ran away with the victory.

The Magic should not be in panic mode. They have a lot to correct and plenty of time to correct it. Many of their issues come down to trust in their new offensive and defensive systems. That will be corrected in time.

Still, the Magic are dropping games and in danger of falling behind. And they are struggling to seize momentum to pick up wins when they present themselves.

The Orlando Magic are still learning the ins and outs of their new coach's offensive and defensive system. As expected, there have been a few hiccups and learning moments in the early season.

But the one thing that has stood out is the team has been bought into the new system and is sticking with it and trying to execute it, even when they have struggled to make it work. That is what got them the win Sunday.

Orlando is still trying to establish its foundation. In three games, the Magic's defense has been rounding into form and has improved in each game. That is a good sign for the team as they establish their base.

There is still plenty to clean up on offense too. But the team's 3-point shooting has proven to be a real development. The team is getting more open shots too. It is just about making shots.

The next few weeks will also be about survival. As injuries grow around the league, the Magic find themselves in a big test to hold the ship steady. That could define their season.

The Orlando Magic breathed a collective sigh of relief as Jalen Suggs avoided a devastating injury. He was diagnosed with a mild right knee bone bruise and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. That means the Magic should see their roster fully together in December, assuming no other injuries.

Already the Magic are facing questions.

Their main assumption from the offseason that health was the only thing missing is thrown out the window. The team will have to rally together and find a way to preserve the season with both Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs out.

The Magic got good news with Anthony Black returning Sunday. He delivered a big game that he will have to continue delivering to help the team compete.

Orlando also started Jase Richardson for the first time Sunday. He struggled. While he has earned minutes, the Magic should look to the steady hands of Jevon Carter to get through this period of injuries.

The Orlando Magic silenced the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden with a fourth-quarter surge to earn their first win.

With Paolo Banchero missing his first game with a high ankle sprain, Franz Wagner stepped up with a superstar performance. He overcame his early game struggles to contribute and keep the team in it before putting the finishing touches with 21 fourth-quarter points to lead the Magic to the come-from-behind win.

The fourth quarter was not just about Wagner's heroics. The Magic displayed the defensive grit and determination that has defined their identity for the past few years. That was missing in the first two games. But the Magic leaned on their defense and got the stops consistently to stay in the game despite their poor offense.

If this is who the Magic will be, they will figure out their new coach and deliver this season.

Despite the win, injuries hang over the team. Paolo Banchero is out at least a month with a high ankle sprain, and Jalen Suggs left the game with an apparent knee injury that has everyone holding their breath.

The Orlando Magic stumbled to an 0-2 start as the familiar shooting woes came to roost and deepened the team's defensive lapses. The Magic are struggling to put all the pieces together on both ends as they stumble out of the gates.

The Minnesota Timberwolves ran roughshod over the Magic, eventually pulling away in the third quarter for the blowout victory.

The Magic have their moments where they look good. But they have not been able to sustain it and the same problems keep them from taking the next step.

The Orlando Magic did a lot of good things in their season-opening loss to the Atlanta Hawks. But they still came out with a loss. And the reasons they came out with that loss are still concerning.

The Magic struggled with their defense throughout the game, giving up a 44-point quarter and big shots at the end of the game.

Orlando's defense had its good moments, and there was plenty to build on. But the Magic are still building their habits and their identity. These early games will help set the team's identity.

But the challenges are only increasing. With a road-heavy start to the year -- including an early West Coast trip -- the Magic feel like they must defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves and head out on their three-game road trip with at least one win to build some confidence and stay in the race.

The Orlando Magic faltered in their season opener to the Atlanta Hawks. Their defense struggled to get key stops down the stretch, allowing the Hawks to silence the Kia Center crowd.

There are reasons for concern after a frustrating loss. But there is a lot to build on too. The question for the Magic is what is repeatable, what is correctable, and what is truly concerning?

The Orlando Magic know this season is a crossroads season as they bump up against the aprons and have to determine how to move forward and improve.

Those considerations likely led them to bypass extension negotiations and send Anthony Black's future to the summer and restricted free agency. Orlando is simply too expensive to commit much to their long-term future.

They also do not quite yet know which direction they will go this offseason. Will they be a team that is doubling down and remaining expensive? Will there be major changes to the roster?

The Orlando Magic are not expected to be contenders this year, often falling in the middle of the NBA in the early-season power rankings. But they have the talent and ability to make good on their potential. This is a season where they need to take a step forward.

The Orlando Magic concluded their preseason with a 136-115 victory over the Miami Heat. It showcased their renewed offense as they continued building the habits and foundation that they showed in their first three preseason games.

The Magic feel like they are in a good place after a strong preseason run. The question will be whether they can translate that into the regular season and whether this offensive surge is real.

The team will have to also avoid the pitfalls that ensnared them last year. Three key players, including Franz Wagner, left Friday's game with injuries, casting a shadow on the season ahead. Their defense has its strong moments too, but was inconsistent throughout the preseason. The Magic cannot win without it.

As Orlando now turns to the regular season, this team has a lot of potential and a lot to prove.

The Orlando Magic are preparing for their preseason finale as they take on the rival Miami Heat. The game is not about the Heat, obviously. It is about the Magic and their preparation for the season.

The Magic are still getting their identity in place under new coach Sean Sweeney. And every rep matters.

So too has an understanding of the team's roles. By clearly defining roles before the season starts, he has helped set up several players for success and for the team to understand their foundations effectively. It has led to a successful preseason.

The Orlando Magic have ignited excitement this preseason with a surprisingly 3-point-happy offense. It has led to the Magic having some stunning offensive showings and looking like a completely different team.

Sean Sweeney promised that the team would play with better spacing and play faster. That is evident. That has resulted in this 3-point uptick where the team is top 10 in both attempts per game and 3-point field goal percentage.

The biggest beneficiary of this in the preseason has been Tristan da Silva. He has taken more than 10 3-pointers per game in the preseason and making them at a 38 percent clip. That is a stunning growth from a player who has at times struggled with his consistency.

If these trends continue for the Magic, things could be very different for the team this season.

The Orlando Magic previewed their full potential with Jalen Suggs' return to the lineup. He immediately made an impact as the Magic came out far more aggressively than they did on Sunday and dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 132-116 victory.

Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner both set the tone, each eclipsing 20 points and combining to score the team's first 17 points. That helped pick the offense up as it returned to the fast-paced, aggressive and pass-happy group that turned heads in their first preseason game. Orlando's offense appears to be cooking with something as the team hopes for a revitalization.

Is this a preview for things to come this season? The Magic proved that they might have a lot more firepower than anyone expected.

The Orlando Magic have had a strong game and a struggling game in the first two of their four preseason games. They have shown how their offense can evolve and the team can take the next step. But they have also left plenty on the board.

The team has yet to see the whole picture come together. Several key players are still missing in action due to minor injuries. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner have yet to fully assert themselves.

With just two preseason games remaining, there is still work to do.

The most immediate concern is clearly getting Banchero's shooting back on track. While he is getting to the foul line and playing quicker, he has struggled to make shots in a significant way.

On the bright side, the Magic are taking more threes and increasing their 3-point volume and quality looks seems to be a major emphasis. The preseason games have been a test of spacing more than anything else.

Orlando is still working toward being regular-season ready.
