Why the Oilers Keep Winning: McDavid’s 218-Point Pace & Jarry’s Rebound
Episode 1385
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers keep stacking wins even though their underlying numbers say they shouldn’t be. On today’s Locked On Oilers, Nick Zararis looks at how Edmonton is winning games with poor shot share, a leaky defense and a lineup full of injuries. He uses Kirby Smart’s blackjack lesson on analytics to explain the difference between process and results. He also explains why the regular season rewards hot goaltending and shooting luck, while the Stanley Cup Playoffs remain the great revealer.
Nick digs into the data from Natural Stat Trick to put Edmonton’s start in context. Last season, 11 of the top 12 teams in high-danger chance share made the playoffs. The Oilers went just 16-16-6 against playoff teams, a record that shows how much the early wins rest on beating weaker opponents. This year’s wins over Carolina, Utah, Minnesota and Seattle are real points in the standings, but the expected goals and high-danger numbers suggest Edmonton has been playing left-handed.
In the middle segment, Nick reviews Tristan Jarry’s week, including back-to-back shutouts against the New York Islanders and Calgary Flames. Over the last 10 games, Edmonton ranks in the bottom third of the league in shot attempts, scoring chances, expected goals and high-danger chances against, so the goaltending has been carrying the defense. Nick explains why consistent starts matter so much for a volatile veteran goalie trying to rebuild his confidence. He also looks ahead to a likely three-goalie rotation once Devon Levi and Frederik Andersen return.
To close the show, Nick breaks down Connor McDavid’s historic start: 39 points in 15 games, a 218-point pace over 84 games, and 4.48 points per 60 minutes. He looks at McDavid’s ice time at even strength, on the power play and on the penalty kill, and gives realistic projections for the rest of the season, including whether 150, 160 or even 170 points is on the table. Nick also previews tonight’s Oilers vs. New Jersey Devils matchup, including Connor Hellebuyck’s arrival in New Jersey and how Edmonton’s top end compares with Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier and the Devils’ depth.

Oilers SWEEP New York! Jarry Shutout, McDavid Burns Gavrikov & Bouchard Is Elite
Episode 1384
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers swept the New York leg of their road trip, beating the New York Islanders on Saturday and the New York Rangers on Sunday on the second half of a back-to-back. Nick Zararis breaks down both wins on today’s Locked On Oilers. He covers why taking care of business against teams outside your weight class is exactly what a Stanley Cup contender has to do. He also addresses the fans asking why he’s been skeptical of a team sitting first in the Western Conference.
Against the Islanders, Tristan Jarry picked up his second straight shutout. That makes him the first Oilers goalie in four years to post shutouts in back-to-back starts, and he did it against a team that has historically had his number. Nick walks through the Islanders’ middle-of-the-pack underlying numbers and how Edmonton’s forecheck created goals that never show up in scoring-chance totals. Kasperi Kapanen won a 50-50 puck for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Leon Draisaitl’s gravity set up a back-door tap-in for Vasily Podkolzin.
Against the Rangers, Connor McDavid went straight around Vladislav Gavrikov to score within 50 seconds. The Oilers controlled the game with a rookie goaltender in net, and the Rangers, playing without Igor Shesterkin, couldn’t recover. Kirby Dach added a goal and an empty-netter, and Evan Bouchard scored from the point. That leads Nick into his case that Bouchard is one of the five best defensemen in the world, alongside Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes and Adam Fox.
To close the show, Nick plays a “gym class draft” between the Oilers, Islanders and Rangers to show how the Oilers keep winning without the deeper roster on paper. He also covers how they’ve stayed first in the Pacific through injuries to Zach Hyman, Mattias Ekholm, Jason Dickinson and Nugent-Hopkins. If everyone gets healthy, are the Oilers more talented than Vegas, and what does their path through the West look like?

Bouchard, Murphy, and Whether Jake Walman Is Cooked
Episode 1383
Show notes
Evan Bouchard has been on the ice for 25 of the Edmonton Oilers’ 32 even-strength goals this season. No other player in the NHL has been on the ice for more. On today’s Locked On Oilers, Nick Zararis breaks down Bouchard’s 22 points in 13 games, his playoff-level 26:10 of ice time, and why the “one-dimensional” label never fit him. The bigger problem is that the rest of the Oilers defense isn’t holding up its end.
We go through every option for Bouchard’s partner. Ekholm and Bouchard have outscored opponents 16-3 at even strength, the Ryan Shea pairing has promising early numbers, and there’s a case for revisiting the Walman-Bouchard duo from the 2025 playoffs. We also look at what happens to Mattias Ekholm away from Connor McDavid, where the underlying numbers drop sharply. And we explain why Shakir Mukhamadullin is the Joe Pesci of the Oilers’ blue line.
Connor Murphy was the key to fixing Darnell Nurse last season. Nurse went from a 44% goal share to 57% after Murphy arrived, and his goals against per 60 fell from 2.9 to 1.24. This year, Murphy’s second pair is struggling without McDavid or Draisaitl to move the puck up ice. We look at why Stan Bowman’s talent-over-fit roster building may be catching up with the Oilers, and why Mike Babcock might need to split up McDavid and Draisaitl to fix the defense.
Finally, Nick takes one on the chin over Jake Walman. Walman was outscored 62-39 at even strength over the last two seasons, he was recently a healthy scratch, and he still has seven years left at $7 million per year. Is it his partners, his deployment, or is Walman simply cooked? Subscribe to Locked On Oilers for daily Edmonton Oilers analysis, and comment below with your ideal Oilers defense pairings.

Oilers Shut Out Flames 4-0 in Battle of Alberta: Depth Scoring Finally Shows Up
Episode 1382
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers got the textbook get-right game they needed, shutting out the Calgary Flames 4-0 in the first Battle of Alberta of the 2026-27 NHL season. After a frustrating shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, the Oilers bounced back with a gritty, hard-hat win that came from down the lineup instead of the usual stars. Host Nick Zararis breaks down why a win like this matters over an 84-game regular season, and why the goal is to keep raising the team’s baseline rather than riding the highs and lows. It wasn’t pretty, but the Oilers took care of business against a struggling division rival.
Offense came from unexpected places, with Mathieu Joseph and Alex Formenton contributing from what has been Edmonton’s weakest even-strength line. Mattias Ekholm scored in his return from a head injury, and Kasperi Kapanen added a power-play tap-in from the Zach Hyman spot thanks to Connor McDavid’s gravitational pull. Tristan Jarry made 24 saves for the shutout, a needed confidence boost while he serves as the No. 1 goalie during Devon Levi’s injury. Nick also looks at the Flames’ stalled rebuild under GM Craig Conroy, with Calgary sitting at 5-7-0 and 29th in the league in goals.
The bigger question is whether this top-heavy Oilers lineup can hold up against deeper Western Conference contenders like Dallas, Colorado, and Minnesota. McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Vasily Podkolzin, and Evan Bouchard have scored 35 of the team’s 55 goals, and McDavid is off to a historic 36-point start through 13 games. Nick asks whether head coach Mike Babcock is playing the long game by keeping struggling line combinations together, and whether it’s time to split McDavid and Draisaitl to spread out the scoring. He also explains why Jake Walman may need to play with Bouchard to rebuild his confidence on the blue line.

Oilers OVERREACTIONS: Is Babcock’s Stubbornness Costing Edmonton it's season?
Episode 1381
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers are 9-1-2 and Connor McDavid is on pace for the best regular season of the 21st century, so why does it feel like something is off? On this Overreaction Wednesday edition of Locked On Oilers, Nick Zararis looks at five early-season storylines from the 2026-27 NHL season and decides which ones are real and which are noise. The topics are Tristan Jarry’s struggles in net, life without Mattias Ekholm, Ike Howard’s usage, whether to split McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, and whether Mike Babcock’s stubbornness will be the team’s undoing.
First up is the goaltending. With Devon Levi on injured reserve, Tristan Jarry is back in the crease, and Nick explains why the jump from franchise starter to once-a-week backup has been so hard on him mentally. Jarry came into Monday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings with an .873 save percentage, well below the league average of .892, and his long gaps between starts have made it nearly impossible to find a rhythm. Once Levi and Frederik Andersen are both healthy, Jarry could end up as the expensive odd man out.
Next, Nick puts numbers behind the Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard pairing. Over three years they have controlled close to 60% of shot attempts, goals, expected goals and high-danger chances, which makes them one of the most dominant defence pairs in the NHL. Bouchard’s numbers hold up surprisingly well without Ekholm, and Mukhamadullin had a solid night on Bouchard’s side against Detroit. That leads Nick to walk back the idea that Ekholm can’t be replaced, though Ekholm still clearly raises Edmonton’s ceiling.
The biggest frustration is how Ike Howard is being used. The former Hobey Baker winner from Michigan State scored his first goal of the season on the power play against Detroit, but he’s still playing about nine minutes a night on the fourth line. Nick argues that playing a skilled scorer like Howard in a grinding role wastes what he is, and that it also lowers his trade value if Edmonton plans to move him. He also points out the double standard: Alex Formenton keeps his spot despite losing board battles, including the Viktor Arvidsson stick-lift that led to Detroit’s goal

Oilers Blow 3 Leads to Red Wings: Why McDavid & Draisaitl Can’t Do It Alone
Episode 1380
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers blew three separate one-goal leads to the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night and fell 4-3 in a shootout. That loss cost them a chance to move into first place in the Western Conference. On this Tuesday edition of Locked On Oilers, Nick Zararis breaks down why the check engine light is flashing in Edmonton, even with the Oilers sitting atop the Pacific Division with just one regulation loss through 12 games. The results look great, but the process underneath them is a different story.
Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard keep delivering all-world performances, and Vasily Podkolzin scored his eighth goal of the season. But what happens when the big guns aren’t on the ice? Nick looks at the Oilers’ depth problem in detail. The Hyman–Kapanen–Nugent-Hopkins line produced zero shot attempts. The Joseph–Michaels–Formenton line posted a 5% expected goals share. Bouchard logged 31:41 of ice time in a regular-season game, and McDavid played nearly 27 minutes. Mike Babcock’s insistence on keeping McDavid and Draisaitl together is making Edmonton dangerously top-heavy.
In the middle segment, Nick explains how a less talented Detroit team beat Edmonton with process: forechecking, cycling, and playing for territory. The Red Wings rank third in high-danger chances and eighth in expected goals despite sitting seventh in the Atlantic. Nick walks through all three Detroit goals. He covers Viktor Arvidsson’s power-play one-timer off a Lucas Raymond feed, the Alex Formenton turnover behind the net that led to Emmitt Finnie’s goal, and Dylan Larkin’s 6-on-5 equalizer threaded through four Oilers defenders. He also gives Tristan Jarry a pass and credits Mukhamadullin’s solid night on the top pair with Bouchard.

Oilers Blown Out 7-2 by Leafs: Is It Time to Split McDavid & Draisaitl?
Episode 1379
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers suffered their first regulation loss of the 2026-27 NHL season Saturday night, a 7-2 blowout at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs. On this Monday edition of Locked On Oilers, host Nick Zararis explains why this was the worst-case scenario for this version of the Oilers. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl still found the scoresheet and the power play converted, but Edmonton failed to score a single even-strength goal. Toronto repeatedly burned the Oilers in transition, and that combination is a warning sign worth taking seriously.
Nick breaks down how the Maple Leafs used long stretch passes to generate 2-on-1s and 3-on-2s against Tristan Jarry. Easton Cowan and the Leafs found open ice through the neutral zone, while the Oilers’ defense struggled without Mattias Ekholm. Using line-by-line even-strength data from Natural Stat Trick, Nick compares the top six to the bottom six. The numbers show how lopsided Edmonton’s lineup has become with Max Jones, Colton Dach, Filip Hallander, Alex Formenton and Mathieu Joseph playing major roles.
The episode also explores why transition play is where modern NHL games are won and lost, and why hockey IQ separates gifted players from merely talented ones. Nick uses Sidney Crosby, Jack Roslovic and Braden Schneider as examples of how processing speed and positioning define a player’s ceiling. He then examines the strange position the Oilers are in this season. Mike Babcock, a new coach, Stan Bowman’s return as GM, a mounting injury list and Connor McDavid’s contract situation all hang over a team that has otherwise started strong.
In the final segment, Nick digs into Edmonton’s goaltending with Devon Levi on injured reserve and Tristan Jarry ranking near the bottom of the league in save percentage and goals saved above expected. He previews a softer upcoming schedule against Detroit, Calgary, the Islanders, Rangers, Devils, Anaheim and Utah. Nick also makes the case that the Oilers may need to break up the McDavid, Draisaitl and Podkolzin line to build a more balanced lineup

Oilers STUN Hurricanes in 6-5 Shootout Comeback | McDavid & Draisaitl 5 Points Each
Episode 1378
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers erased a 4-2 deficit against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes and won 6-5 in a shootout in one of the wildest games of the young NHL season. On this Victory Friday edition of Locked On Oilers, Nick Zararis covers the full emotional swing of a back-and-forth game that felt like a playoff matchup in October. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each put up five points, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added two in his season debut. Edmonton also improved to two separate three-game win streaks before November, something last year’s team didn’t manage until January.
Carolina controlled long stretches of this game with its trademark forecheck and structure. The Oilers managed just four even-strength shot attempts through 40 minutes and only 12 at 5-on-5 all night. Nick explains why the Hurricanes are among the hardest teams in the NHL to play against, how they pull opponents into the “deep end of the pool,” and why Edmonton’s patience kept them in a game that was slipping away. He also looks at the warning signs, including when McDavid starts trying to bully his way to the net alone and the team’s system breaks down.
The power play went 3-for-5 for the second straight game, and Nick discusses whether a 60% power play can carry a top-heavy lineup and what that means for the bottom three lines. The night also came at a real cost. Mattias Ekholm left after hitting his head on the ice, which could mean more minutes for Jake Walman, Ryan Shea, and Shakir Mukhamadullin. Nick also credits goaltender Devon Levi for a better performance than his five goals against on 27 shots suggest.
To close, Nick puts the win in context. McDavid is on a pace near three points per game, and the season carries the pressure of his contract situation. Is this way of winning sustainable? Probably not. Is it a sign this Oilers team has the fortitude good teams need? It’s getting hard to argue otherwise.

How the Oilers STOLE an OT Win vs. the Wild | Edmonton Oilers Power Play Breakdown
Episode 1377
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers didn’t play their best hockey against the Minnesota Wild, but they still found a way to win in overtime. On today’s Locked On Oilers, Nick Zararis breaks down how Edmonton came from behind against one of the NHL’s best front-running teams. Minnesota scored first and controlled long stretches at even strength. The Oilers hung around long enough to steal two points.
Special teams decided this one. The Oilers went 3-for-5 on the power play, including a goal with three seconds left in the first period and the overtime winner. The much-maligned penalty kill went a perfect 3-for-3. Devon Levi delivered the goaltending Edmonton needed while the top line of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin was outchanced and outscored at 5-on-5 by Kirill Kaprizov, Quinn Hughes and the Wild.
Nick also digs into one of the most underrated stats in hockey: how teams perform when the opponent scores first. The Oilers are 5-0-0 when they open the scoring and 2-1-1 when they trail first. That’s a sharp turnaround from last season’s 11-25-6 mark, and Nick compares it with Edmonton’s back-to-back Stanley Cup Final runs. He also covers the fourth line of Isaac Howard, Filip Hållander and Trent Frederic, which tilted the ice in its limited minutes.
Finally, Nick explains why it’s time to stop worrying about sustainability and start counting the points. Edmonton’s power play ranks second in the NHL at 31 percent, while the penalty kill sits 22nd at 74 percent. With Ryan Nugent-Hopkins nearing a return and a top-heavy lineup still battling injuries, every early-season win banks leeway for April. If the Oilers keep winning games they probably shouldn’t, Nick argues, this team is better than its underlying numbers suggest

Edmonton Oilers Reality Check: Goalie Workload, Top-Heavy Scoring & Injury Concerns
Episode 1376
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers are off to a sizzling 6-1-1 start, but serious underlying cracks threaten to derail their momentum. While Connor McDavid’s historic 23 points in eight games has masked major weaknesses, the team’s over-reliance on its superstars is reaching unsustainable regular-season levels. Host Nick Zararis dives into why Edmonton's top-heavy production, injury wave, and defensive inconsistencies could become major roadblocks as the season wears on.
A major focal point of concern is Connor McDavid’s playoff-level workload, logging an eye-popping 23:23 of ice time per game. Combined with Evan Bouchard, Vasily Podkolzin, and Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton’s top four players account for an overwhelming 68% of the team's total points. Without those stars on the ice, Edmonton has been outscored 11-4 at even strength, highlighting an urgent need for lineup balance once injured pieces return.
The goaltending tandem presents another critical variable as Devon Levi shoulders an unexpected starter's workload. With Tristan Jarry struggling to find consistency and Frederik Andersen sidelined until at least December, Levi is being pushed well past his historical NHL usage levels. We examine how long Levi can sustain this pace before hitting a physical wall and how Mike Babcock must manage this fragile crease moving forward.
Finally, we assess what the lineup shuffle means for returning veterans and young talent like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Matt Savoie. With an aging roster, declining penalty kill efficiency, and depth players struggling to generate offensive pressure, the margin for error remains thin against elite NHL contenders. Tune in for a constructive reality check on where the Oilers must improve to turn regular-season survival into genuine Stanley Cup contention.

Connor McDavid’s Revenge Season & Vasily Podkolzin’s Breakout: Why the Oilers are Legit
Episode 1375
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers are off to a blistering 6-1-1 start through their first eight games, sparked by a historic scoring pace from Connor McDavid. With 23 points already on the board, McDavid is the fastest player to hit 20 points since Mario Lemieux in 1995–96, playing with the edge and efficiency of an all-time great on a mission. Nick Zararis breaks down why this early run looks like a classic championship revenge tour and how McDavid’s dominant 5-on-5 play is powering the roster.
A major catalyst alongside McDavid and Leon Draisaitl has been Vasily Podkolzin, who is seizing his opportunity on Edmonton's top line. Podkolzin is producing at over a point-per-game clip while logging over 19 minutes per night, ranking among the team leaders in high-danger chances and expected goals. His high-motor forechecking and willingness to battle in high-traffic areas make him the ideal complementary winger to elevate Edmonton's stars.
Between the pipes and along the blue line, Edmonton has established steady baseline competency rather than relying on miraculous goaltending. With Devon Levi and Tristan Jarry holding down the fort to provide adequate stops, Edmonton's structured defensive metrics are limiting catastrophic chances at even strength. Paired with elite pairing results from Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm, the Oilers are protecting leads without constantly playing on eggshells.
The most encouraging factor for Edmonton is that this early success is happening shorthanded. Key regulars like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jason Dickinson, Matt Savoie, and Frederik Andersen have yet to make their full presence felt, while depth forwards have held down crucial minutes. As injured reinforcements return to balance the middle-six and round out the goaltending rotation, the ceiling for this Oilers team is significantly higher than early projections suggested.

Connor McDavid EXPLODES for 5 Points! | Oilers Bounce Back to Rout Utah 6-2
Episode 1374
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers bounced back emphatically from their first regulation loss of the season, dismantling the Utah Mammoth 6-2 behind a sensational 5-point masterclass from Connor McDavid. Host Nick Zararis breaks down how Edmonton exploited Utah’s aggressive blue-line defense to generate lethal counterattacks and breakaways. Plus, we look at Tristan Jarry’s solid 26-save performance in net and discuss why league-average goaltending might be all this powerhouse roster needs to dominate.
Digging into the analytical weeds, the Oilers are telling two drastically different stories under the hood early this season. While shooting regression is bound to arrive for a team currently converting at a league-leading 19%, Edmonton ranks number one in the NHL in expected goals against per 60 minutes. We examine how bottom-six puck possession and smart defensive-zone exits are shielding the team while injured stars work their way back.
Looking ahead, we evaluate McDavid’s absurd start—pacing for a historic 150-point campaign with 23 points in just 8 games—alongside his heavy 23+ minute workload. We also analyze what needs fixing right now, including a struggling penalty kill sitting 26th in the league, and the expected boosts from returning pieces like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Matt Savoie

Why Edmonton's First Regulation Loss to Utah Isn't Panic Time
Episode 1373
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers suffered their first regulation loss of the season in a 4-2 battle against the surging Utah Mammoth. Host Nick Zararis breaks down why this matchup served as an essential early-season measuring stick rather than a reason to hit the panic button. Despite dropping the contest, Edmonton showcased encouraging 5-on-5 baseline play against one of the league's top possession teams.
Special teams proved to be the ultimate deciding factor on Friday night. With Utah converting twice on the man advantage and Edmonton coming up empty on their own power play opportunities, the margins in this matchup narrowed fast. Nick dives deep into the penalty-killing breakdowns, personnel deployments, and the broader trends impacting Edmonton's current power play efficiency.
Looking at the bigger picture, the Oilers continue to adapt their identity while dealing with significant lineup absences early in the season. Through an analytical lens, we examine whether Edmonton's current dump-and-chase reliance is sustainable or merely a short-term survival strategy. Tune in for a comprehensive tactical evaluation of where the roster stands and what adjustments are needed moving forward

Why the LA Kings CAN’T Beat Connor McDavid & the Oilers | Game Breakdown & Film Review
Episode 1372
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers delivered another masterclass against the Los Angeles Kings with a commanding 4-1 victory, proving once again why this Pacific Division matchup has turned completely one-sided. Host Nick Zararis breaks down Edmonton’s explosive three-goal first period and explains how early multi-goal cushions allow the Oilers to play disciplined "no-doubles" perimeter defense. While the raw box score showed Los Angeles putting up 40 shots on goal, the underlying analytical context illustrates how Edmonton dictated game flow and limited legitimate high-danger scoring threats.
A deeper dive into the numbers reveals an undeniable psychological and tactical edge the Oilers hold over LA. Nick revisits the four consecutive playoff series victories, highlighting Connor McDavid’s staggering 47 points across 24 postseason games against Los Angeles. The Kings' veteran, low-event defensive structure simply lacks the straight-line speed needed to defend McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and a surging Vasily Podkolzin in open ice.
The conversation wraps up by spotlighting early-season dominance from Edmonton's superstars alongside notable depth concerns. With Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard on the ice, the Oilers are crushing opponents with historic point production and elite scoring-chance differentials. However, sustaining this level of play will require the bottom-six forwards to tread water and provide stability as the regular season grinds toward mid-December.

Why Filip Hallander is more than just roster filler | Extended Deep Dive
Episode 1371
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers recently acquired forward Filip Hallander in exchange for Spencer Stastney, betting on a player with a unique European development path. Hallander arrives in Edmonton with high hockey sense and a responsible two-way profile that could stabilize the bottom six while the team navigates early-season injuries. In this episode of Locked On Oilers, host Nick Zararis breaks down Hallander’s winding path from the Pittsburgh Penguins to Sweden and back to North America.
Drafted 57th overall back in 2018, Hallander has only suited up for 19 career NHL games despite productive stretches in both the AHL and the Swedish Hockey League. His underlying metrics show slightly above-average speed and shot velocity, yet his real upside lies in winning board battles and managing puck possession along the walls. We examine why Kyle Dubas targeted him multiple times and what that historical organizational interest reveals about his baseline skill set.
Edmonton’s coaching staff does not need Hallander to produce gaudy scoring totals to make this low-risk transaction worthwhile. Instead, relying on a seasoned European pro for roughly 12 to 13 fourth-line minutes per game prevents young prospects like Ike Howard from having their development stalled in low-leverage roles. Learn how this buy-low addition fits into the lineup permutations as injured regulars begin working their way back onto the ice.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Reaction: Filip Hållander Acquisition & The Harsh Darnell Nurse Reality
Episode 1370
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers are navigating early-season roster turbulence, swinging a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins to acquire forward Filip Hållander in exchange for defenseman Spencer Stastney. With injuries mounting across the forward group, Stan Bowman leveraged defensive depth to add a high-motor, forechecking depth piece with second-round pedigree. Host Nick Zararis breaks down why Kyle Dubas was eager to bring Hållander into Pittsburgh's orbit multiple times and how Hållander's north-south, low-event style fits Edmonton's immediate survival strategy.
Following the Oilers' matchup against the San Jose Sharks, the show shifts to an honest retrospective on former top defenseman Darnell Nurse. We examine how rising salary cap scrutiny and modern fan access transformed Nurse’s 798-game tenure in Edmonton from a foundational pillar into an overpaid lightning rod. The discussion covers the fallout of his $9.25 million contract, the emergence of Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm, and how Nurse's defensive instincts impacted Edmonton's recent Stanley Cup Final runs.
Finally, we analyze the Oilers' 4-0-1 start to the season under a heavily structured, low-event defensive identity. Nick breaks down Tristan Jarry's steadying performance in net, Devin Levy’s workload distribution, and how the team is surviving long stretches without key pieces. Plus, get the latest injury updates on Zach Hyman, Matthew Savoie, Jake Walman, and Colton Dach as the schedule begins to intensify

Oilers Lineup Dilemma: Isaac Howard Miscast, Emberson vs Mukhamadullin & Goalie Drama
Episode 1368
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers have faced an uphill battle through their first four games, dressing a piecemeal lineup loaded with questions across every position group. While the team holds Stanley Cup expectations, host Nick Zararis examines whether the roster's current utilization is setting up young players to fail. From over-relying on temporary fill-ins to juggling injured veterans, we break down why Edmonton's lineup remains a high-variance work in progress.
Up front, former Hobey Baker winner Isaac Howard finds himself trapped in a low-minute, fourth-line checking assignment that runs counter to his shoot-first offensive profile. Nick dives into why the Oilers need to determine Howard’s ceiling alongside elite talent rather than burning his organizational equity in survival minutes. Plus, we look at early bright spots like college free agent Owen Michaels and the cautionary tale of asking Colton Dach to do too much too soon.
On the blue line, a battle for the bottom pairing emerges between steady buy-low contributor Ty Emberson and high-upside project Shakir Mukhamadullin. We explain why Emberson’s defensive reliability earned him regular minutes over Mukhamadullin’s raw physical traits, alongside a breakdown of the Ryan Shea and Connor Murphy pairing. Then, we turn to the crease, where Devon Levi’s promising starts cannot mask the impending regular-season workload crisis facing Edmonton's fragile three-goalie rotation

Edmonton Oilers Comeback vs. Anaheim Ducks: Why McDavid, Draisaitl & Levi Stole the Show
Episode 1367
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers battled back from an early two-goal deficit to secure a statement 5–2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard combined for 10 points to turn the tide after Anaheim struck twice on the power play early in the first period. We break down how Edmonton shook off last spring’s playoff heartbreak, solved Anaheim’s attack, and proved why their elite core remains the most dangerous trio in the NHL.
Between the pipes, goaltender Devin Levi delivered another steady outing, turning aside 29 shots and stabilizing the net when Edmonton needed it most. With Tristan Jarry watching from the bench and Frederik Andersen sidelined, we examine whether Levi has officially earned the starting reins early this season. We also analyze Edmonton's underlying five-on-five metrics, highlighting how a massive second period completely neutralized the Ducks' transition game.
Special teams remain a critical talking point as Edmonton rallied from giving up two quick goals to kill off five consecutive penalties. We address the Oilers' current injury crisis, evaluating how the lineup is coping without key contributors like Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Finally, we dive into early-season roster dilemmas, including Ike Howard’s fourth-line ice time and what adjustments Mike Babcock must make ahead of the next matchup

Why Vasily Podkolzin is the long-term Zach Hyman replacement
Episode 1366
Show notes
The Edmonton Oilers are seeing former 10th-overall pick Vasily Podkolzin take his game to unprecedented heights alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. After arriving in Edmonton via trade from the Vancouver Canucks for just a mid-round pick, Podkolzin has climbed from opening-night fourth-line obscurity into an indispensable top-six powerhouse. Host Nick Zararis breaks down how Podkolzin embraced a high-motor, hard-forechecking identity to earn serious organizational equity and cement his spot on the top line.
Through the early stretch of the season, the underlying 5-on-5 analytics highlight an explosive breakout in the making. Podkolzin ranks among the team leaders in shot attempts, scoring chances, and high-danger chances per 60 minutes while logging roughly 19 minutes per night. With defenses forced to commit extra coverage to McDavid and Draisaitl, Podkolzin is feasting on high-danger real estate and putting relentless pucks on net.
While a 23% shooting percentage will inevitably experience regression, increased ice time and superstar trust could propel Podkolzin toward a legitimate 25-to-30-goal campaign. We examine historical late-bloomer comparisons, analyze why buy-low wingers succeed in Edmonton, and ask whether Podkolzin is poised to become Edmonton’s long-term Zach Hyman successor

The Edmonton Oilers are three games into the season, and host Nick Zararis dives deep into the underlying advanced analytics to separate real sustainability from early-season noise. While small sample sizes can yield wild numbers, the early statistical trends for Edmonton’s core are impossible to ignore. From historic 5-on-5 shares to glaring lineup depth issues, we break down what is truly driving this team right now.
First, we dissect Evan Bouchard’s historic start, where his play-driving and blue-line vision mirror the cerebral control of elite defensemen like Adam Fox. With an 89% 5-on-5 goal share and overwhelming possession metrics, Bouchard is keeping Edmonton pinned in their ideal offensive game state. We discuss why his playmaking is compensating for early goaltending chaos and why a 100-point campaign should instantly place him in Norris Trophy conversations.
Next, the episode breaks down the deployment of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the top line under early coaching decisions. While loading up the two superstars creates an impossible pick-your-poison problem for opposing defenses—aided by Vasily Podkolzin's work on the forecheck—it dramatically exposes Edmonton’s bottom nine. We evaluate whether this top-heavy approach is sustainable long-term or if it forces the depth lines into situations where they are destined to get overwhelmed.
Finally, we run through quick-hit lineup evaluations, spotlighting struggles with Colton Dach at center, Kasperi Kapanen’s role, and Shakir Mukhamadullin’s growing pains on the blue line. Can Edmonton bank early-season points despite high-danger defensive leaks and an unstable penalty kill?
