  1. Mama Bear Movie Minute: Coven Academy

    Show notes

Is Disney's Coven Academy just another magical teen drama, or is it making the occult more appealing to the next generation?

In this Mama Bear Movie Minute, Hillary, Alexa, and Anja examine the show's portrayal of witchcraft, friendship, identity, and the pursuit of power. From covens and spellcasting to the normalization of occult practices, they explore how entertainment can make spiritually concerning ideas seem beautiful, harmless, and even desirable.

The Mama Bears also discuss the biblical differences between seeking control and surrendering to God, the dangers of making friendship our ultimate source of fulfillment, and the importance of teaching kids to recognize counterfeit versions of God's good gifts. Whether your family chooses to watch the show or skip it altogether, this conversation offers practical ways to build discernment and engage your kids in meaningful discussions about faith and culture.

  2. Episode 163: How Christians can ROAR through Spooky Shows

    Show notes

Witches, demons, and dark magic are showing up in more children's entertainment—but how can Christian parents distinguish harmless fantasy from spiritually dangerous messages? Amy is joined by Alexa Kramer to examine the growing influence of occult imagery and witchcraft in popular shows and movies, including Wednesday, The Owl House, and Halloweentown.

Using the ROAR method, we explore how entertainment can blur the lines between good and evil, appeal to kids who feel misunderstood, and normalize occult practices. We also share practical ways to evaluate media, establish age-appropriate boundaries, and start gospel-centered conversations that help our children recognize deception, embrace biblical truth, and find their identity in Christ rather than worldly promises of power.

    Main Points Covered

    • The Rise of Occult Themes in Children's Entertainment — How popular movies and shows incorporate witchcraft, dark imagery, and messages that challenge biblical morality.
    • The Appeal of Witchcraft and the Outsider Identity — Why themes of empowerment, belonging, and embracing darkness can particularly appeal to vulnerable or isolated young people.
    • Applying ROAR to Spooky Entertainment — Recognizing underlying messages, offering objective discernment, arguing for a healthier approach, and reinforcing biblical truth.
    • Practical Discernment for Christian Families — How parents can distinguish fantasy from depictions of occult practices, establish boundaries, and have age-appropriate conversations without creating unnecessary fear.

  4. Episode 162. How Christian Parents Can Talk About Halloween with Their Kids

    Show notes

In this episode of the Mama Bear Apologetics podcast, we're joined by Alexa to dig into the history of Halloween, from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain to the modern American traditions we recognize today. We separate historical facts from popular misconceptions, explore the Christian connections to All Hallows' Eve, and examine how Halloween traditions have evolved over time.

But knowing the history is only half the battle! We also turn to Scripture to discuss the difference between harmless costumes and actual occult practices, why Christians should take divination and necromancy seriously, and how to establish thoughtful boundaries around entertainment and decorations. Most importantly, we talk about extending grace to families who make different decisions about Halloween. Whether your family celebrates with costumes and candy or chooses to abstain entirely, the goal is the same: honor Christ, disciple your children, and stand firm in biblical truth without living in fear.

    Main Points Covered

    • The History and Origins of Halloween: Exploring ancient Celtic Samhain traditions, All Hallows' Eve, and how Halloween evolved into today's costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating.
    • Christian Freedom, Conscience, and Convictions: Understanding why Christian families approach Halloween differently, respecting personal convictions, and teaching children to extend grace to others.
    • Biblical Boundaries and Spiritual Discernment: Examining what Scripture says about witchcraft, divination, necromancy, occult practices, and the importance of discernment in Halloween decorations and entertainment.
    • Keeping Christ at the Center of Halloween: Helping children understand God's sovereignty, remembering faithful Christians, creating meaningful family traditions, and using October 31st as an opportunity for evangelism and community outreach.

    Show notes

In this Mama Bear Movie Minute, Hillary Ferrer and Anja Westerhaus unpack Disney/Pixar's Coco, exploring its beautiful messages about family, legacy, and honoring loved ones alongside concerns about ancestor worship, spirit guides, and the afterlife.

The Mama Bears discuss how parents can appreciate the beauty of Mexican culture while teaching children to recognize spiritual practices that contradict a biblical worldview. They also explore the importance of trusting God's plan for our children, avoiding all-or-nothing thinking, and having meaningful conversations about eternity.

Whether your family has watched Coco or you're deciding if it's appropriate, this episode encourages parents to approach entertainment with biblical discernment, celebrate what is good, and use challenging themes as opportunities to point their children toward Christ.

  6. Mama Bear Movie Minute: Forgotten Island

    Show notes

In this Mama Bear Movie Minute, Hillary, Alexa, and Anja tackle Forgotten Island—and make an unusually direct recommendation to skip it. While acknowledging its colorful animation, Filipino cultural elements, and themes of friendship and belonging, they argue these are overshadowed by demonic folklore, reckless behavior, crude humor, party culture, and unhealthy ideas about relationships.

Using a biblical worldview and the Mama Bear ROAR method, the hosts examine what the movie teaches children to laugh at, admire, and empathize with. They contrast the characters’ rage, impulsiveness, and destructive friendship with biblical warnings about the influence of bad company. They also discuss the movie’s sympathetic treatment of creatures rooted in Filipino folklore, asking whether repeated exposure to frightening or evil imagery can blur children’s spiritual discernment.

Ultimately, the episode encourages parents to recognize that thinking critically about entertainment doesn’t always require watching everything culture produces. Sometimes loving biblically means recognizing what a story asks children to normalize—and choosing to skip it.

    In This Episode

05:09 Filipino culture, Christianity, and the rebellious-grandma trope

09:00 Recklessness, disrespect, and what the movie teaches kids to laugh at

13:30 Biblical wisdom about friendship and bad company

04:50 Filipino folklore, demons, and indigenous spiritual beliefs

23:46 Desensitization to disturbing and demonic imagery

25:35 Crude humor, empathy, and spiritual discernment

29:16 Friendship, identity, and unhealthy dependence

32:51 Party culture, YOLO, and dark humor

  7. Episode 161: What Should Christian Women Know About Yesteryear?

    Show notes

In this special “mamas only” episode, Amy and Anja Westerhaus tackle Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, a novel centered on Natalie, a wildly successful “tradwife” influencer whose carefully curated online persona masks a deeply dysfunctional reality.

Rather than treating the novel’s depiction of faith, marriage, motherhood, and conservative Christianity at face value, Amy and Anja encourage listeners to recognize Natalie as an unreliable narrator. They argue that her pursuit of the perfect home, marriage, family, and online identity reflects a works-based and performative worldview rather than biblical Christianity.

The conversation uses Yesteryear as a jumping-off point for a bigger question: What happens when an aesthetic becomes confused with biblical womanhood? The hosts distinguish between pursuing Christ and pursuing an image of perfection—whether that image involves sourdough, prairie dresses, homesteading, picture-perfect children, or an Instagram-worthy kitchen.

They also turn the critique inward. Christians aren’t immune to comparison, envy, trolling, labeling, or an “us versus them” mentality. Instead, believers are called to treat people—including those with whom they strongly disagree—with dignity, kindness, gentleness, and respect.

Ultimately, Amy and Anja challenge Christian women not to respond to caricatures of Christianity with another caricature. Instead, live differently. Biblical womanhood isn’t a social-media aesthetic or a one-size-fits-all lifestyle. It is faithfulness to Christ expressed through the particular gifts, relationships, responsibilities, and circumstances God has given each woman.

    Main Points Covered

    • Tradwife Aesthetics vs. Biblical Womanhood — The hosts distinguish an online image of traditional femininity from biblical faithfulness.
    • Social Media & Performative Perfection — Curated content can fuel comparison, envy, and unrealistic expectations about motherhood and homemaking.
    • Works-Based Faith vs. Grace — Natalie’s pursuit of perfection is contrasted with salvation by grace and dependence on Christ.
    • Rejecting “Us vs. Them” Thinking — Christians are encouraged to resist caricatures, trolling, and dehumanizing labels and instead respond with love, gentleness, and respect.

Alexa and Anja discuss Breadwinners, a family comedy about a stay-at-home mom whose business takes off and a breadwinning dad who suddenly finds himself managing the home and their three daughters. They explore family teamwork, recognizing individual strengths, adapting to unexpected changes, and being present with your kids.

They also discuss the movie’s “clueless dad” trope, the unequal household load many moms carry, and how families can think biblically about responsibilities and gender roles without becoming overly rigid. Scriptures discussed include 1 Corinthians 12:12, Ephesians, Luke 10, and 1 Thessalonians 5:11.

  9. Episode 160: Are we raising resilient daughters or mommy martyrs? Four things every woman needs to cultivate in herself and her daughter.

    Show notes

Amy Davison examines the rise of “mommy martyr” content—social media posts that portray motherhood, marriage, and family life through a lens of victimhood, resentment, and emotional collapse. She explains how co-rumination and social media validation can reinforce negative thinking rather than promote healing. As an alternative, Amy encourages women to cultivate four things in themselves and their daughters: a biblical worldview, homemaking skills, resilience, and Christ-like community. Ultimately, she encourages struggling moms to seek genuine help and godly community rather than allowing online venting to shape their identity or view of their families.

    Main Points Covered

    • What is Mommy Martyr content?
    • How has Co-Rumination & Social Media contributed to this type of content?
    • Four things every woman needs to cultivate:

    • A biblical worldview
    • Homemaking skills
    • Resilience
    • Christ-like community

  10. Mama Bear Movie Minute: In your Dreams

    Show notes

In this Mama Bear Movie Minute, Hillary, Alexa, and Anja examine Netflix’s In Your Dreams through worldview insights, potential issues, and invitations for conversation. One of the movie’s strongest themes is the contrast between a perfect fantasy and an imperfect but meaningful reality. Stevie ultimately realizes that having everything she wants isn’t worthwhile if it means giving up her real relationships. The hosts connect this to free will, suffering, and the value of authentic relationships.

The movie also creates an opportunity to discuss occultism and spiritual discernment. The children pursue magical help because it promises something good, illustrating how curiosity and the desire for control can make occult practices appealing. The hosts appreciate that parents can use the story to discuss these dangers without introducing children to actual occult practices.

Their primary concerns are the movie’s “dumb dad” trope and portrayal of marriage and divorce. The father is loving but frequently portrayed as irresponsible or unnecessary, while marriage can seem like something that simply works—or doesn’t—rather than a covenant requiring commitment and sacrifice.

Finally, the hosts encourage parents to focus on Stevie’s tendency to carry problems that belong to adults. Parents can pause the movie when she tries to fix everything herself and remind children that they can bring their fears and burdens to their parents and to God rather than feeling responsible for solving family problems alone.

    In This Episode

00:34 — In Your Dreams: story setup and Stevie’s mission to save her family

01:42 — Perfect dreams versus meaningful, imperfect reality

02:47 — Free will, suffering, and why imperfection matters

03:04 — Occultism, curiosity, magic, and the promise of getting what we want

04:52 — Lucid dreaming and questions about New Age/occult connections

05:43 — Potential issues: the “dumb dad” trope

08:05 — Fathers portrayed as superfluous and concerns about divorce

08:41 — Representation, marriage, commitment, and covenant

10:07 — Divorce, responsibility, and its effects on children

11:20 — Using the movie to discuss occult practices and discernment

12:24 — Teaching children to bring problems to their parents

13:03 — Perfectionism, anxiety, and bringing burdens to God

13:29 — Practical invitation: pause the movie and talk

  11. Mama Bear Movie Minute: The Magic Faraway Tree

    Show notes

The Magical Faraway Tree gets an enthusiastic 11/10 from the Mama Bears for offering something increasingly rare: a whimsical, genuinely family-friendly story centered on imagination, family, and character rather than a heavy-handed agenda.

One of the movie’s strongest themes is family unity during hardship. After the Thompson family loses nearly everything because the mother refuses to compromise her moral convictions at work, the parents choose to face the consequences together. Rather than responding with bitterness or victimhood, they turn their circumstances into an adventure. The hosts connect this to Ecclesiastes 4:9 and the importance of spouses remembering that they are on the same team.

The movie also models parenting through example. Instead of constantly lecturing their unhappy children about gratitude and attitude, the parents demonstrate optimism, sacrifice, and teamwork themselves.

The magical storyline creates opportunities for deeper conversations about dreams, greed, contentment, and the supernatural. The hosts distinguish healthy goal-setting from New Age ideas about manifestation and vision boards, while also asking why people are so drawn to fairy tales and magical worlds.

    Chapters

00:53 The Magical Faraway Tree & childhood imagination

03:49 Doing the right thing when it costs everything

05:26 Marriage, teamwork & family resilience

10:04 Imagination, feminism & responding with grace

15:35 Dreams, marriage & parental sacrifice

19:31 Magic, wishes & lessons from the Faraway Tree

23:45 Dream lists, vision boards & New Age beliefs

25:51 Fairy tales, Christianity & the supernatural

  12. Episode 159: Can your kid answer why the Bible is true without saying, "Because Mom said so?"

    Show notes

Can your kids explain why they trust the Bible without answering, “Because Mom said so”?

In this episode, Amy and Tricia Scribner tackle the first of two big questions about the reliability of the New Testament: Do we actually have what the original authors wrote?

Skeptics sometimes compare the transmission of Scripture to a giant, centuries-long game of telephone—one person passes a message to another, mistakes pile up, and eventually the message bears little resemblance to the original. But that analogy misses some important facts. The New Testament wasn’t transmitted through one fragile chain of whispered messages. It was copied in writing across multiple communities, languages, and manuscript traditions.

Amy and Tricia walk through the work of textual criticism, explaining how scholars compare thousands of surviving manuscripts, translations, and quotations from early Christian writers to reconstruct the wording of the New Testament. They discuss manuscript quantity and quality, the importance of early copies, textual variants, and the “chain of custody” connecting the apostles with later Christian teachers. And yes—there are variants. Lots of them. But simply counting variants can make the evidence sound much scarier than it is. Most involve things such as spelling, word order, or other differences that do not change the meaning of the passage. As Tricia puts it, variants need to be weighed, not merely counted.

The takeaway for Mama Bears? We don't have to teach our kids to fear questions about biblical manuscripts. We can give them tools for investigating those questions using Scripture, reason, and reality—and help them understand why the hosts conclude that the New Testament has been reliably transmitted.

    Main Points Covered

    • The New Testament was transmitted through multiple written lines, not like a single game of telephone.
    • The abundance of manuscripts helps establish reliability because textual critics can compare copies across different manuscript families.
    • Earlier and higher-quality manuscripts carry particular weight when scholars reconstruct the original wording.
    • Textual variants should be weighed, not simply counted. Most involve spelling, word order, or other differences that don't affect meaning.
    • We can confidently recover what the New Testament authors wrote, while leaving the separate question of whether their claims are true for the next episode.

  13. Mama Bear Movie Minute: The Sandlot

    Show notes

In this first “classic edition” of Mama Bear Movie Moment, Hillary, Alexa, and Anja revisit The Sandlot and discover that there’s a lot more hiding underneath the baseball, childhood insults, giant dogs, and infamous Tilt-A-Whirl scene. The conversation centers on friendship, resilience, childhood play, consequences, inclusion, and what it looks like to use our influence to bring outsiders into the fold.

That doesn't mean everything in this nostalgic classic gets a free pass. We flag the pool scene as an opportunity to discuss consent, push back against the assumption that sexualized material is simply something “everybody” encounters, question the movie's “follow your heart” message, and note some mild language and tobacco use. Rather than making those moments reasons to avoid the film, they demonstrate how parents can turn them into conversations.

Ultimately, The Sandlot gives families an opportunity to talk about what children actually need to flourish: friendship, belonging, courage, room to play, appropriate consequences, and the confidence to reach toward the kid who hasn't yet found a place on the team.

  14. Mama Bear Movie Minute: Michael

    Show notes

In this Mama Bear Movie Minute we explore Michael. We saw opportunities to talk with our kids about fatherhood, freedom, God’s glory, celebrity worship, and the cost of fame. We contrasted Joseph Jackson’s harsh, authoritarian parenting with a producer who recognizes Michael’s talent and helps cultivate it, giving us a powerful picture for discussing how earthly fathers can shape the way we view God.

We also explored what it means to do everything “for God’s glory,” focusing on God’s goodness, beauty, and excellence rather than an ego-driven need for recognition. Michael’s incredible talent reminded us to help our children recognize and steward the gifts God has given them.

We also note an intense scene of physical abuse and the film’s very sympathetic portrayal of Michael. These themes give us opportunities to talk with our kids about celebrity worship, identity, the importance of friends who will lovingly tell us “no,” and whether fame and wealth can ever replace authentic relationships and true freedom.

  15. Summer Rewind: ROARing Through K-Pop Demon Hunters

    Show notes

In this episode of the Mama Bear Apologetics podcast, Hillary, Amy and Alexa analyze the animated movie KPop Demon Hunters using their ROAR method: Recognize the message, Offer objective discernment, Argue for a healthier approach, and Reinforce through discussion, discipleship, and prayer. With the film gaining popularity among teens and younger audiences, they break down the worldview behind the catchy music, vibrant visuals, and overarching narrative. They highlight both accurate portrayals of spiritual warfare and problematic messages such as redefining sin, the role and reality of the demonic and fighting shame with pride...which is counter to the Gospel. There are loads of theological issues with the film, but that's to be expected. More importantly there is a very subversive undertone that could entice your children into downplaying the danger of or even inviting the demonic into their lives.

    Main Points Covered

    • Refresher on the ROAR method
    • Summary and cultural context of K-Pop Demon Hunters
    • Shamanistic influences in the film's narrative
    • The spiritual battle theme and accurate depictions of demonic manipulation
    • Analysis of the "Your Idol" song and its theological implications
    • Positive and problematic messages about shame, identity, and salvation
    • Teaching discernment to children using media
    • Parenting strategies for spiritual conversations

  16. Mama Bear Movie Minute: Project Hail Mary

    Show notes

Project Hail Mary offers families a fun opportunity to talk about self-sacrifice, friendship, courage, and hope. Grace's journey from cowardice to risking himself for Rocky echoes John 15:13 and points toward Christ's ultimate sacrifice. The movie also challenges the assumption that faith and science are incompatible, showing that scientific inquiry doesn't necessarily exclude belief in God.

The hosts also identify worldview issues worth discussing. Stratt's decision to force Grace onto the mission raises the question of whether the ends justify the means, while the larger “save the world” narrative invites conversations about human limitations and God's sovereignty. Finally, the movie provides natural openings to discuss extraterrestrial life, creation, fine-tuning, and what the Bible says about the end of the world.

  17. Mama Bear Movie Minute: Spiderman A Brand New Day

    Show notes

In this Mama Bear Movie Minute, Hilary, Alexa, and Anja examine Spider-Man through a Christian worldview, discussing identity, sacrifice, burnout, community, spiritual warfare, genetic manipulation, and the cultural idea of embracing one’s “dark side.” They contrast discovering an inner “true self” with choosing to live according to one’s identity in Christ, using Peter Parker’s loneliness and exhaustion to show the dangers of serving in one’s own strength without rest or relationships. The hosts also explore Spider-Man’s humility, sacrificial love for enemies, cultural redefinitions of bravery, distrust of authority, the ethics of altering human genetics, and the biblical call to resist sinful inclinations rather than integrate them. They close with practical ways parents can talk with their children about Sabbath, community, science, identity, and making people more important than projects.

    In This Episode

04:08 Choosing an identity grounded in Christ

05:59 Humility, David, and serving without recognition

07:08 Burnout, Sabbath, and prioritizing people

10:15 Isolation and the need for Christian community

13:36 Loving enemies and Christ-like sacrifice

  18. Summer Rewind: How to Witness to Unbelieving Friends and Family

    Show notes

In this episode, Amy and Lindsey discuss practical, biblical ways to share the Christian faith with unbelieving family members, friends, coworkers, and others. Rather than relying on debates or overwhelming people with apologetics arguments, they encourage Christians to begin with prayer, humility, genuine friendships, and a firm foundation in Scripture.

The conversation emphasizes that believers are already representing Christ through their daily actions. Effective evangelism is less about "winning" arguments and more about faithfully building bridges through authentic relationships, listening well, and treating every person as an image-bearer of God.

They also address common misconceptions about apologetics, the dangers of online hostility and cancel culture, the importance of preparing children to engage thoughtfully with differing worldviews, and when healthy boundaries are necessary instead of continued bridge-building. The episode concludes by encouraging listeners that God uses imperfect people, and humility after mistakes often provides a powerful witness to unbelievers.

    Main Points Covered

    • Prayer & Humility – Begin every faith conversation with prayer and a humble attitude.
    • Truth & Relationships – Build genuine friendships while staying rooted in Scripture.
    • Equip Your Family – Prepare yourself and your children to engage other worldviews with confidence.
    • Faithful Witness – Practice discernment, set healthy boundaries, and represent Christ well.

  19. Mama Bear Movie Minute: Devil Wears Prada 2

    Show notes

In this Movie Minute episode, Alexa and Anja discuss The Devil Wears Prada 2 through a biblical worldview lens. They explore how the film raises questions about vocation, purpose, validation, fashion, ambition, and the cost of success. While appreciating the movie's nuanced characters and opportunities for meaningful conversations with teens, they also critique its moral relativism—particularly a scene that implies Jesus was merely another flawed human being. The hosts encourage listeners to help their children think critically about where they find their identity, how they view work, and how Christians can glorify God in any vocation.

  20. Mama Bear Movie Minute: Sheep Detectives

    Show notes

In this Movie Minute episode, Alexa and Anja discuss Sheep Detectives, a charming mystery centered around a flock of sheep investigating the murder of their beloved shepherd, George. While the film is humorous and beautifully filmed, the hosts highlight its deeper themes of justice, grief, belonging, critical thinking, and biblical imagery.

The conversation explores how George's relationship with his sheep mirrors God's relationship with His people, drawing connections to Scripture about the Good Shepherd and God's intimate knowledge of His children. They also examine the film's handling of memory, death, and justice, discussing where its worldview aligns with biblical truth and where it reflects more naturalistic ideas.

The hosts especially appreciate the movie's emphasis on remembering injustice rather than ignoring it, encouraging children to think critically about difficult topics instead of being shielded from them. They also unpack the "winter sheep" storyline as a powerful illustration of loving those who are rejected or marginalized, much like Jesus did throughout His ministry.

Overall, Alexa and Anja recommend using the film as a springboard for conversations about God's character, biblical justice, grief, inclusion, metaphors used throughout Scripture, and how Christians should think critically about the messages presented in media.
