Marketing Nuggets

Business, Careers, Marketing

A weekly podcast for ambitious marketers who are done playing small. It's the honest, behind-the-scenes version of a marketing career. Twelve years of real stories, the award-winning campaigns that started as disasters, the late-night saves, and the epic fails that taught me the most, with the systems and mindset shifts pulled out so you can actually use them.

Every episode sits where the three things that decide how far you go meet: marketing that works, productivity that survives real chaos, and the confidence to back yourself when it counts. Whether you're deep in B2B complexity, chasing B2C creativity, or staring down a week that feels impossible, you'll leave with the pep talk and the practical bit.

Wherever you are, from graduate to director, consider me your marketing mentor and biggest cheerleader, here for the real, messy, brilliant truth about building a career you're genuinely proud of.

Come for the stories. Stay for the strategies that actually work.

  1. 176: How to Build a Marketing Campaign Under Pressure: What I Actually Did

    Season 6, Episode 58

    Show notes

I was asked to build a brand campaign plan. Full one. In 48 hours.

This episode is the honest story of what happened next, and by the end of it, you'll have a completely different relationship with that kind of deadline. You'll have a specific move for turning panic into a list the moment overwhelm hits. You'll know how to stop trying to build the whole campaign and start building only the top-line decisions the room in front of you actually needs to say yes. You'll have the nerve to look at your own "good enough" work and call it too safe when it needs more edge. And you'll walk away with a genuinely better way to approach every campaign you build from here on, deadline or not, because the discipline that got me through those 48 hours turned out to be the better way to work all along.

If you've ever been handed a campaign brief that felt genuinely impossible in the time you had, this is the episode that shows you exactly how it gets done, and what it can turn into six weeks later.

  2. 175: Protecting Your Strategy When Q4 Tries to Eat It

    Season 6, Episode 57

    Show notes

You know that strategy document? The important one? The one that has been open in a browser tab for two weeks while you firefight everything else?

Welcome to Q4. For some of us that means planning season, budget season and the pre-Christmas deadline crunch. For others it means the peak: Black Friday, Christmas, and the biggest sales days of the entire year landing in a matter of weeks. Two completely different quarters, and yet the same thing happens in both. The strategic work, the thinking that shapes next year, is the first thing to get eaten.

In this episode I am sharing my system for defending strategic work through the loudest quarter of the year, whatever loud looks like for you.

Q4 does not have to eat your strategy. But you do have to fight for it, and here is how.

And if building a whole week that protects your best work, not just surviving Q4 but operating like this all year, is the bigger project, that is Module 4 territory in The Marketer You Already Are - a 5-module self-paced course for ambitious marketers who are ready to stop being the best-kept secret on their team. Build confidence, presence, and strategic thinking and finally be seen as senior. [more here] Show notes, or https://www.emmawindsor.com/, right in the nav.

  3. 174: Leading a Marketing Team: What They Actually Need From You

    Season 6, Episode 56

    Show notes

The moment you get a team, the job quietly changes, and nobody hands you the new rules.

You go from being brilliant at the work to being responsible for other people's. And if you're anything like I was, your instinct is to get more involved. More input, more time, more of you. It feels like good leadership. It's actually the fastest way to become the bottleneck your whole team has to work around.

This week I'm getting honest about what years of leading marketing teams, getting it wrong and slowly getting it right, has actually taught me about the job nobody trains you for. What your team needs from you almost never looks like what keeps you busy on their behalf. And it's almost certainly not more of you.

If you lead people, or you're about to, this is the episode I wish someone had handed me before my first direct report.

  4. 173: Your 2027 Marketing Strategy: How to Say No, and What Keeping Everything Is Costing You

    Season 6, Episode 55

    Show notes

Here's a test for any marketing strategy: look for what it says no to. If the answer is "nothing" - it's not a strategy. It's a wishlist with a logo on it.

Last week we did the questions that come before building your 2027 plan. This week is the part nobody enjoys and everybody needs: the choices. Killing the zombie projects that survive on habit. Retiring the channels that eat more than they deliver. Saying no to good ideas so that great ones get funded properly. And doing all of it cleanly and on the evidence, so the calls hold up and actually stick.

I'm sharing the filter question I use on every request and every line of the plan, how to sunset something with data instead of drama, the trade-off sentence that makes "no" land as leadership, and why your stop-doing list is genuinely the most senior document you'll produce all season.

Three big bets, properly protected, beat twelve initiatives on life support. Every time.

  5. 172:Your 2027 Strategy Starts Now: The Questions to Answer Before You Build Anything

    Season 6, Episode 54

    Show notes

It's October. Which means somewhere in your calendar, "2027 planning" is looming - and the temptation is to open a blank deck and start building.

    Don't. Not yet.

Because here's what I've learnt building annual strategies year after year as a marketing leader: the quality of your strategy is decided before you build anything. It's decided in the questions you ask first - and most marketers skip straight past them to the fun bit.

In this episode I'm giving you the five questions I answer every October before a single slide exists: the honest audit (data, not vibes), the business question most marketers never actually ask out loud, the calendar-versus-strategy test, the outside-in check, and the one about what's changed in the world since last year's plan - which, this year, is rather a lot.

Part one of two. Next week: the hardest part of strategy - what you say no to.

And if the deeper skill here - thinking strategically instead of just executing brilliantly - is the thing you're working on this year, that's the heart of The Marketer You Already Are - my course for ambitious marketers. [More here] or head over to emmawindsor.com and you'll see in the nav.

  6. 171:Start On Your Terms: How to Build a Morning That Protects Your Best Thinking

    Season 6, Episode 53

    Show notes

Your inbox owns your mornings. Take them back.

You've heard about my 5:15 alarm. The lemon, ginger and turmeric tea. The cold shower. (Episode 122, if you missed the full tour.)

This episode is not that. Because here's what I've realised since: my routine is not the valuable bit. The system underneath it is - and that system works whether your morning starts at 5:15 or 7:45, whether you love a cold shower or would rather resign.

Today I'm breaking down the six principles that make any morning routine actually work: why your morning really starts on Sunday, the wake-up rule that decides whose terms your day runs on, decision elimination, the transition moment, and the protected first hour - the single highest-leverage productivity move I know.

Then you build your version. Not mine. Yours. There's a free workbook to do exactly that

  7. 170:How to Create the Ultimate Marketing Handover, Whether It's Short or Long-Term Cover

    Season 6, Episode 52

    Show notes

Most handovers are a task list. And most task lists quietly fail the person relying on them.

This episode is about the four layers a genuinely good handover is actually made of, and the part almost nobody tells you: you rarely need all four. How many you need comes down to one thing, how long you're going to be gone.

By the end you'll know exactly what your operational floor has to contain so nobody's left guessing on day one, how to hand over the people on your team and not just the org chart, how to pass on your judgement so your cover can make your calls without ringing you, and the fourth layer that changes everything the moment a handover runs long. Covering someone for a fortnight needs one layer. Covering a team for months needs three. Handing something over for six months or more, or for good, needs a completely different philosophy, one I got wrong on my first attempt before I built it properly.

That last layer is the real secret sauce: the difference between writing a script someone follows forever, and building a foundation confident enough for them to eventually build past, including past you.

If you've ever written a handover, or you're about to, this is the version nobody hands you.

  8. 169: Where Should Your B2B Budget Go? Choosing Media That Actually Works

    Season 6, Episode 51

    Show notes

Every B2B marketer has stood in front of the same terrifying question: we have this budget... where does it actually go?

LinkedIn? Events? Content? PR? Paid search? A bit of everything? (Spoiler: "a bit of everything" is how B2B budgets go to die.)

In this episode - a natural follow-on from last week's launch playbook - I'm sharing how I actually make media decisions as a marketing leader. The three questions I ask before any channel earns a single pound, my honest take on the big B2B channels after years of spending real budget on them - LinkedIn, events, email, PR, paid - and the proven-promising-experimental split that stops your budget being spread so thin that nothing works.

Fewer channels, done properly, for longer. That's the whole philosophy - and this episode shows you how to choose which ones.

  9. 168: The B2B Campaign Playbook Every Marketer Should Steal

    Season 6, Episode 50

    Show notes

It's campaign season. So today you're getting my actual campaign playbook. Not the theoretical version, not something from a textbook, the exact method I use.

You'll get the one page I write before a single asset gets built, the four boxes that tell me honestly whether a campaign is ready or just hopeful. The exercise I run to make sure a campaign sounds like nobody else's in the market, and the statement system underneath it. Why I think your people, not your channels, are your most powerful media, and how to activate them properly. The two-phase structure I use that isn't really two phases at all. And the three numbers I put in front of leadership before launch, so the campaign gets judged on the right thing, at the right time.

And a quick word to my B2C marketers, because I can feel some of you reaching for the skip button: don't you dare. Yes, today's examples wear a B2B badge, but it may still inspire you to add something into your next campaign. Stay with me.

  10. 167: What I Learnt Launching Two Campaigns on the Same Day

    Season 6, Episode 49

    Show notes

Two campaigns. One launch window. And no, it wasn't a calendar accident.

A wider brand campaign, and an extension that slotted into it. Launching one without the other made no sense for the audience. Launching both together made complete sense strategically, and roughly doubled the work.

This episode is the how. How I split one team into two mini teams and gave each only what they needed to know. Why I led one campaign and deliberately handed the other to someone else. The connective work I kept for myself: the unified social plan, the channel-by-channel call on what was genuinely launch day and what could follow, and how both campaigns got their moments without tripping over each other. Plus the one rule I set for my own head that kept me sane through all of it.

If your plan ever puts two big things close together, and one day it will, this is the operating manual.

    Season 6, Episode 48

    Show notes

You spend hours preparing the deck. The data. The talking points. And about four minutes preparing the one thing that actually decides how the moment goes: you.

In this episode I'm walking you through the full Confidence Stack - the four-layer preparation framework I use before every moment that matters. A big presentation, a senior leadership meeting, a pitch, a visibility moment. If you heard me apply it to job interviews back in episode 137, this is the complete version for everything else.

We're covering the Identity Layer (owning your edge), the Logic Layer (knowing your thinking inside out), the Preparation Layer (removing the unknowns), and the Energy Layer - the one most people skip, and the one that changes everything.

  12. 165: You'll Never Feel Ready - And That's Exactly Why You Should Start

    Season 6, Episode 47

    Show notes

You've been telling yourself you'll go for it when you feel ready. The bigger role. The hand up in the leadership meeting. The idea you've been sitting on for months.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: that feeling isn't coming. Not because there's something wrong with you - because that's not how readiness works. Readiness isn't a prerequisite. It's a product. It shows up after you start, never before.

In this episode I'm breaking down where the readiness myth comes from, why it hits capable marketers hardest, and the one question swap that gets you moving this week - not "one day". Plus the evidence exercise I use every time I catch myself waiting for permission from a version of me that feels more prepared.

If you've been circling something for months waiting for the moment it feels comfortable, this is your sign that the moment is now.

And somewhere between the boardrooms, the global campaigns, and the teams I was building from scratch, I realised there were four things nobody had ever taught me. Four areas I had to figure out fast if I wanted to be the marketer my career deserved, my team needed, and the business was asking for.

Confidence. Visibility. Strategic thinking. And protecting the time to do all three.

    Season 6, Episode 45

I spent a long time waiting for someone to tell me I was ready. Ready to show up differently. To take on more. To be in the rooms that felt more like me. The stretch project. The seat at the table that felt more like me.

And I kept waiting. And doing great work. And waiting a bit more.

Until I realised that nobody was coming. Not because I wasn't ready. But because permission was never theirs to give.

This episode names the permission trap specifically: why we wait, what we're actually waiting for, and why nobody is coming to give it to us. Not because we don't deserve it. But because it was never theirs to give.

If the word 'yet' lives rent-free in your head - not ready yet, not senior enough yet, not quite there yet, this episode is especially for you.

We are seven months into the year. Which means one of two things is true right now. Either you're ahead of where you thought you'd be - which is brilliant and worth pausing to acknowledge. Or something has drifted, slipped, or quietly gone in a different direction to the plan, which is completely normal and also worth pausing to acknowledge. Either way, now is the perfect moment to stop, look up from the execution, and ask yourself the questions that most marketers skip. This episode is your mid-year check-in. Seven questions, an honest conversation, and a clear direction for the next five months.

    Season 6, Episode 43

    Show notes

Finance. Operations. Sales. Senior leadership. There are rooms in every marketing career where you are the only person who thinks the way you think and everyone else wants you to justify, translate, and prove the value of what you do. This episode is about how to do that without losing your perspective, diluting your ideas, or turning into a walking marketing glossary. Because being the only marketer in the room isn't a vulnerability. It's a position. And once you learn how to use it, not just to land your ideas, but to actually listen to the room, you will leave those meetings with better marketing than you walked in with. That's the bit nobody tells you. Until now.

    Season 6, Episode 42

    Show notes

Nobody tells you this when you start a marketing job: feedback is not guaranteed. You can be working hard, delivering well, showing up consistently and still be operating in almost complete silence about how you're actually landing. No one's telling you what's working. No one's telling you what isn't. And the longer that silence goes on, the more you start filling it with your own worst guesses. This episode is about why feedback disappears - the specific situations that cause it, what that silence is actually costing you, and the four practical ways to engineer the feedback loops that nobody is going to build for you.

    Season 6, Episode 41

    Show notes

Comparison isn't the problem. Reading it wrong is. In this episode, I'm getting into the trap most of us fall into...watching someone else's career, feeling behind, and using their highlight reel to write a story about our own inadequacy. We're naming it, unpicking why it's so addictive, and, most importantly flipping it into something that actually moves you forward. Because that sting you feel when you see the promotion, speaking gig, or shiny new title? It's not a verdict on where you are. It's a compass pointing at what you want. And those are two very different things.

    Season 6, Episode 40

    Show notes

On your best days at work - the days where you get to your desk, you know exactly what you're doing, you get into flow, you make real progress on things that matter… what's actually different about those days?

I'd bet it's not that you had fewer things to do. It's that you had a plan. You knew what you were protecting. You were in control of your time instead of your time being in control of you.

In this episode I'm unpacking the one philosophy shift that sits underneath every productivity system, morning routine and to-do list hack I've ever shared on this podcast. The thing that, when you finally get it, changes not just how you work, but how you feel at the end of every single day.

This isn't about doing more. It's not about doing less. It's about something far more fundamental than either of those things.

  20. 157: The Six Questions Senior Marketers Ask - That Most Marketers Never Think To

    Season 6, Episode 39

    Show notes

Over a decade in marketing and I can tell you the exact moment I stopped being the person who delivered the update and became the person who shaped the direction.

It wasn't a promotion. It wasn't a big campaign win. It was the questions I started asking.

Most marketing managers are answering questions they should be asking. And that one shift - from answering to asking, is what separates the people who execute the plan from the people who shape it.

The good news? There's a version of you that walks into every meeting and immediately changes the quality of the conversation. She's not more experienced than you. She's not more senior than you. She's just asking six different questions.

In this episode, I'm sharing exactly what those questions are. Questions I've collected over twelve years of watching the best strategic thinkers in the rooms I've been in. The questions that don't just make you look senior. They make you think senior.

And you don't need a new title to start asking them. You need this episode.
