When I first started homeschooling I thought everything would go so smoothly, but, boy, was I ever wrong! It seems like life didn’t slow down for me, it ramped up.

And, as the mom of 15 energetic children, here’s one thing I’ve learned about change:

It’s inevitable.

It seemed like I would just get to a place where I felt comfortable, and then something would upset my carefully controlled world, such as a job change or morning sickness.

I know you can relate.

Finally, I stopped expecting everything to stay “copasetic” and did something different

.

Instead of fighting the waves, I started using their energy to get myself ahead.

Looking back, I can see the pattern clearly, and I think this will be quite helpful for you today as a homeschooling mom.

Here are the three reoccurring waves of family life:

* Shock and Awe: The time when we are served with the news of the big change.

* Adjustment: The time when we are taking in the new situation and attempting to adapt.

* Normalization: When the change is no longer “strange” but becomes our new “normal.”

If you think about it, we are constantly living in the midst of one of these waves.

The trick is to find a way to homeschool which will work no matter which one we find ourselves in.

Now, some changes are joyous; such as the birth of a new baby or a move to a nicer house. But many are sad, such as the death of a loved one, a stint of unemployment, or a life-altering illness.

It’s in those times that we need to keep our wits about us, especially if we are in charge of our child’s education.

Keep in mind:

* The basics of homeschooling do not take 180 days a year, six hours a day.

* Real life is also a great part of a well-rounded education. When children pack a house, tend to a sick loved one, and witnesses how adults navigate life changes, they learn more than any curriculum could ever teach.

* Families (along with homeschooling) break down when we get overwhelmed and paralyzed and stall at one of the stages instead of adapting and moving forward.

There are so many examples of this in the Bible, with one of the greatest being the story of Joseph. Just think how his life changed drastically as he was sold into slavery, unjustly accused and placed in prison, and then suddenly made second in authority to the king. In each situation we find he practiced the three cycles of change and crisis with great patience and trust in God’s bigger plan.

When we are considering homeschooling through change and crisis, the trick is to find routines and materials which will work no matter which of the stages we’re going through.

Vintage materials have been my go-to’s because they were created to accommodate the different waves of life.

* They aren’t age-graded, so you can jump in and jump out whenever necessary.

* The material covered is concentrated, so they are compact. You can cart them with you to doctor’s visits, airplane terminals, and the in-laws’ house.

* They are excellent enough to keep kids progressing without spending loads of time each day.

Now I would like to share with you an approach which will help you make the most of the energy of each wave.

I’ve never actually tried surfing with a board, but I have body surfed before. One of the tricks is to know when to paddle softly, when to paddle vigorously, and when to lie still and allow the crest of a wave to carry you along.

Just as there are different levels activity when riding real waves, there are also different levels of activity when riding the waves of life.

And that’s what I want to show you today.

Here’s how to approach each of the wave stages:

1. Shock and Awe stage:

Attempts to keep the previous stage of “normalcy” turn into frustration, and the uncertainty can turn into panic and fear.

* Let go of what you’ve come to know as “normal” and do these things instead:

* Let your kids in. Discuss what’s going on, allow them to give input on how the perceive things, etc.

* Let everything else go and concentrate on the basics of keeping everyone safe and healthy.

* Make prayer and Bible reading a priority.

2. Adjustment Time:

This is when you begin to assess your new situation.

* Your focus is on creating systems and routines adapted to your new life season.

* Continue with Bible and prayer, and perhaps add in a good read-aloud with some family discussion.

* Slowly add in the other, most basic academic elements (the Four Pillars). Nothing fancy or elaborate.

3. Normalization:

This is when you develop daily and weekly rhythms. Besides the Bible and read alouds you have been enjoying, you add in The McGuffey readers, some Gentle Grammar or Harvey’s Grammar, and some arithmetic.

After you feel solid again, you can start adding in more variety and creativity, including some unit studies, notebooking, and the like.

This is how I finally learned to make friends with the upsetting waves of life while homeschooling our children.

Finally, I would like to leave you with some thoughts I believe will give you hope and comfort:

The following quote has been attributed to Elizabeth Elliot, who experienced the death of two or her husbands and spent two years among the indigenous peoples of the Amazon Rain Forest:

There is no perfect life, no perfect job, no perfect childhood, no perfect marriage, and no perfect set of people who always do what we expect them to do.

What we have is a perfect God Who is able to lead us through this imperfect life with unfailing strength, incomparable wisdom, and infinite love.

This quote has been attributed to John Piper:

Occasionally, weep deeply over the life you hoped would be. Grieve the losses. Then wash your face. Trust God. And embrace the life you have.

In case you were wondering, I am Sherry Hayes, the mom of 15 who’s been homeschooling for over 37 years. My passion is to encourage other mommies on their journey to glorify their God and love their families.

I hope you have found something valuable and strengthening in this message, and I hope you will subscribe and follow along as we travel this journey together.

Homeschooling gives us the opportunity to take advantage of the natural rhythms of life, instead of being dictated to by a system that is more focused on production than the human beings it is supposed to serve.

For children struggling with spelling, grammar, or punctuation, there is a simple tool that is powerfully able to help.

It’s called dictation.

It’s really like a potent vitamin filled with all the essentials of written communication. Charlotte Mason used it, as did McGuffey and a host of educators who existed for millennia before them.

Most reading struggles aren’t due to flawed children, just materials used at the wrong level.

But how to we find that level?

For years I struggled with this, until I discovered the McGuffey readers and needed to know how to place each child in the different books. What I found I want to share with you today.

Teaching your child to be a good writer is easier than you may think. All it takes is immersion in good writing via classic literature and the McGuffey readers using some time-honored learning techniques and practicing to build confidence. Not a great writer yourself? I have a remedy for that!

There are thousands of homeschool curriculum options which is nice in some ways, but also leads to confusion and decision fatigue! I'd like to offer up a few tests for weeding out the bad stuff so the good stuff can be seen more clearly.

I’m the mother of 15, so I’ve never had time to mess around or extra money laying around just waiting to be spent on flashy books that may never be used.

(I think I see you nodding.)

So, I got a little excited years ago when I finally decided to go back to the “old paths”; to the old times when real education happened in one-room school houses (which closely resembled our own motley crew of assorted children).

And the excitement has never waned, so if I seem a little zealous in this post, I beg your pardon in advance!

Here goes:

If you are able to view this post on a computer, a tablet, or a phone, then you have access to a complete homeschool curriculum you don’t have to wait for and may not have to pay for.

Seriously, you and your children can begin experiencing an upgrade to excellent education starting TODAY!

In this post I am going to be discussing with you the specific ways you can use modern materials and technology of today with the most amazing materials of the past to create the ultimate learning plan for you and your children.

Most families have been taught that science belongs to experts, laboratories, and expensive curriculum packages. But historically, science began with observation, wonder, experimentation, and curiosity about God’s creation.

In this podcast episode, we discuss:

--Charlotte Mason and nature study

--How to teach science through everyday life

--Nature notebooks and scientific observation

--Living books and biographies of scientists

--STEM preparation for homeschoolers

--Raising curious children instead of passive learners

--Practical homeschool science ideas for every age

--Backyard science and nature walks

--Notebooking, collections, sketching, and discovery

--How scientific thinking naturally develops in children

Whether you homeschool full time or simply want to awaken curiosity in your children, this episode will encourage you to see science in a completely different light.

What if science was never supposed to feel intimidating? In this episode, we uncover how modern schooling crushed natural scientific thinking, why children are born investigators, and how simple it should be for parents to claim a Biblical approach to science and discovery.

Why do some history books make children come alive with curiosity… while others feel like lifeless drudgery that everyone forgets five minutes later?

Today we are going to talk about what actually makes a history resource worth your time.

Not the hype.

Not the endless teacher guides and activity books.

Not the pressure to “cover everything.”

Just the simple elements that make history meaningful, memorable, and fascinating.

I’m going to share some of my favorite homeschool history resources—from textbooks and reference books to living books, documentaries, lectures, and fascinating rabbit trails—and also explain why some resources work beautifully while others quietly kill a child’s interest in learning.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by all the curriculum choices out there, or wondered how to make history come alive in your homeschool without burnout, I think this conversation will encourage you tremendously.

There are so many resources to choose from out there! Here is my humble attempt to cull the best that I know of, but I know many of you have also come across some amazing ones. Please feel free to share in the comments below.

I think this time we will focus on everything but historical fiction, which will take some time, and next time we will focus on historical fiction and all the ways you can go about using it.

Before I begin, I want to emphasize that, as you are doing your research for materials, don’t be lured in by the hype!

Like I always try and emphasize, learning should be simple. Most curriculum has been geared first for the classroom, then modified slightly in an attempt to be of service to homeschoolers. While we appreciate this accommodation, I have found most teacher’s texts, answer books, and activity books to be unnecessary. If you apply these simple ideas to whatever you are studying, you won’t need to bother with all the extras:

* Reading aloud and/or self reading

* Discussion

* Rabbit trailing

* Notebooking

* Other activities as they come along naturally and organically

Here is a quick list that I hope will spark your creativity.

First, let’s talk about reference books.

These are sometimes referred to as “spines,” because they give structure as we go about enjoying gaining knowledge about our world, whether past or present.

You could say these books add in the “Chronos” (and the ones with the Biblical worldview even include some of the Kairos).

Here are just a few:

* A Manual of Ancient History by M. E. Thalheimer. This book was originally written in 1872, before all the craziness had completely set in. It includes the Biblical narrative along-side with the rest of the events of world history, all the way up through Roman history. It is pretty dry reading, but a great reference for adding understanding on different topics.

* Textbooks from major Christian homeschool publishers. These are great because they not only give you a spine to help draw all things together, they also are written from a Christian perspective. My advice is to purchase these second-hand, since you will not be needing any of the answers or teacher’s directions (unless you want to have them). Also, if you get the high school level books, they will be a better reference and include more information. Here is a short list of publishers and titles which seem to be pretty reliable:

* Streams of Civilization books 1 and 2. This is a great treatment of the subject and you can find older versions easily. Also, these books include some information on more modern history as well.

* Abeka and Bob Jones University have come up with some interesting high school history textbooks that you can purchase used quite easily. These also, depending on the edition, can cover information on the 21st century.

* Master Books has some good series, although they haven’t been out long enough to be bought at a less expensive price.

3. Other reference books. These are not always from a Biblical perspective, but they do add interesting illustrations, maps, and other information into the mix. I know there are about a million of these out there, so I will only list a few that I have actual experience with:

* DK history books and atlases (affiliate)

* Usborne history books (affiliate)

* National Geographic histories and atlases (affiliate)

Now let’s talk about Charlotte Mason “living book” history narrations. These are the ones which follow the Chronos but include the Kairos in an engaging narrative fashion.

1. The Story of the World series. I have to mention this one because it is so popular, but it does not receive my endorsement. I haven’t used these books myself, but my daughter, Rebekkah, has with her children . She tells me they contain mistakes and biased viewpoints that are not necessarily Christian at all. Here is the opinion of one of my listeners on this series:

We couldn’t get through the first book. My kids felt it was ‘yucky’ and disturbing with the emphasis on legends and myths and Egyptology. Very ‘classical’ with emphasis on all things Greek. Missed SO much of creation account, timeline from Adam to flood, Noah’s sons and their tribes, Tower of Babel and the turning y she migration of different people groups, etc. Like reading a public-school textbook with a meager smattering of Biblical accounts, which were squished right next to cultural myths. Blah

(This is purely opinion, so if you have found a way to make these books work, no judgement here.)

2. Charles C. Coffin books. We have covered these in previous posts, but I believe they are worth a mention here. All from a positive, Christian perspective, and all written in an engaging, narrative manner.

3. The Light and the Glory (affiliate) and From Sea to Shining Sea. These are so interesting they had me engaged for a number of days when I purchased them. This is the thoroughly Christian history of the United States you always wanted to know, but could never find a good source for. Written in a narrative manner, it may be above the heads of your younger children, but worth the read for middle school level and above.

4.This Country of Oursand other books by H. E. Marshall. These are overviews which were written when it wasn’t against the rules to mention God and faith. They would also be Charlotte Mason-approved.

5. The Mystery of History (affiliate). This is the series I would suggest could replace The Story of the World. The books themselves are quite in demand, so there aren’t any really cheap ones out there. One thing to keep in mind is that you won’t need the extra helps and activities, which will reduce the cost of using these materials. Also, this series is chronological as opposed to thematic, meaning you won’t find a section dedicated just to Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome, as the narrative includes the overlap between the two, and also with other cultures along the way.

6.Laurie White’sKing Alfred’s English (affiliate). This is a thin book, but one of the most interesting history books my children and I have ever enjoyed together. It is basically a history of the English language, which doesn’t only help with history itself, but also with language, as it gives us the reasons why English is both easier and more difficult than other world languages. She also has a website with all sorts of printables and other resources called The Shorter Word.

Next, let’s talk about the “fun” resources and extra stuff that we can add into the mix. I am going to put in just a few, but I know you mommies out there have plenty more!

* Talks, website, etc. From William Federer. Mr. Federer is a dear Christian man who has spent most of his life studying and analyzing history from a Biblical view point. His lectures are so chock full of enlightening information that you have to listen to them a number of times to catch it all. His books are also interesting to read and share.

* Compass Classroom. This is a homeschool curriculum company which houses numerous of its history lectures right here on YouTube, and you can access them for free.

* How the States God Their Shapes (affiliate). This is a series done around 2011 that looks at US history from a different angle, but covers a lot of fascinating information. You can find a cropped version for free on YouTube, you can purchase the set, or you can watch it where it is currently streaming.

* The Greatest Stories Never Told (affiliate) series by Rick Breyer. Our children found these at the library and they were hooked! I think in some ways these silly books are what lit the fire in them to know more about history. I don’t appreciate the bias or everything that is shared in these, but the stories shared certainly pique one’s interest in finding out more!

* Answers in Genesis. I know we tend to think of this ministry as dealing with creation science, but I have found it is replete with all sorts of history as well, and always from a Biblical perspective. They offer most of their books free to read online, as well, which is a real boon.

* Wall Builders. The founding father-son pair of this ministry, David and Tim Barton, say they have the largest private collection of original documents and other articles from the founding of our country in the United States. They also have their own channel here on YouTube where they present not only American History from a Biblical perspective, but commentary on current events, political movements, etc.

* Christian History Magazine. This is such an amazing resource! It is basically a monthly magazine that runs entirely on donations, and which you can access freely online. The work is well-researched and written and the illustrations and layout are amazing. In the past I was able to download, print, and bind a number of the issues for use in our homeschooling. Among our favorites are issues on JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis, but there are so many more!

* How the Church Fostered Science and Technology

* Plagues and Epidemics (from 2020)

* Faith in Foxholes

* Francis Asbury; Pioneer of Methodism

* Charlemagne

And on and on...

Now, that’s a lot of information! I’m going to be sharing more on different types of novels, etc. in my next post, so be ready!

If you and your children hate history, I've got a remedy! There is a book that will rewire your thinking and give you a reason to love the subject as you never have before: The Story of Liberty by Charles C. Coffin. This is not a textbook (heaven forbid!); it's an engaging narrative which will draw you in and send you on lovely adventures with your children. Coffin will not only teach you events and people, he will teach you the reasons behind all of it, and how you can view the rest of history through a hopeful Biblical lens. Why do kids today know all the details of pop culture, but struggle to have interest in anything worthwhile? I believe it's because conventional schooling has stripped hope out of the curriculum. This is why young people spend so much time distracting themselves. They are trying to drown out the despondent voices in the backs of their minds. In this episode, we’re diving into the third pillar of excellent education: content—and why it must be rooted in truth, purpose, and hope if it’s going to nourish the hearts and minds of our children. This is part of our ongoing series on the Four Pillars of Excellent Education:

1. Gaining favor with God and man

2. The tools and skills of learning

3. Content (what we cover today)

4. Application

If we get this third pillar wrong, everything else begins to collapse. But when we restore it, we give our children something the world cannot offer: Hope. In upcoming episodes, we’ll begin getting practical—sharing simple, proven ways to help you and your children explore history, science, and the arts with depth, joy, and lasting meaning.

Based on a widely-circulated graduation test from 1895, children of the past routinely mastered arithmetic without overwhelm, expensive curriculum, or years of frustration.

So what changed? In this episode we break down a radically simple, time-tested approach to teaching math that actually works which I've discovered teaching our 15 children. You’ll discover why waiting for readiness matters, how basic arithmetic can be learned faster than you think, and how to replace confusion with clarity using practical, proven methods. If math in your homeschool has felt heavy, complicated, or discouraging—this might completely change your perspective.

So much harm has been done through our modern educational system. So many people are not being taught the basics. Even students who graduate with honors have trouble comprehending texts beyond the seventh-grade level.

Why is this?

Because our education system has been gradually dumbing us all down, and it has been deliberate.

But we don’t have to become silenced victims; we can take things into our own hands and take part in the current learning revival right in the comfort of our own homes.

Today I would like to share some specific ways I discovered to take back the minds of our children by concentrating on the basic skills of reading and writing so they will be prepared for any and all other learning.

In 2025, the United States spent 6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product on education. Since the total GDP was 30.62 trillion dollars, that means the amount we laid out for education in America was a whopping $1,837,280,000,000! (That’s a lot of paychecks for a lot of people needing to make their mortgage payments, which means this has become a large part of our economy.)

Schooling in America not only eats up money, it eats up time. It takes six to eight hours a day for 180 days a year, for 13 or more years.

And yet, Johnny still can’t read or write.

We’re not spending money on an education system; we’re funding an indoctrination system bent on stripping us of our mores and dumbing us down.

But it wasn’t always this way. There was a time when people demanded excellent education because they were heavily invested in the outcome of their communities and their government.
