Movies We Dig | Film, Antiquity and Everything in Between

Education, Film Reviews, TV & Film

Is it a movie podcast? Is it a history podcast? Is it an unholy union of the two? Short answer: yes! Each episode, hosts Colin MacCormack, Elijah Fleming and Christie Vogler break down a new movie about Greece, Rome or the wider ancient world and what works (or doesn’t work) about them. But this isn’t a podcast for nitpicking historical inaccuracies. Rather, it’s a chance to get hot takes on Hollywood films from professional nerds/academics and take a closer look at the relation between our movies and our pasts.

  1. The Horror of Pygmalion Desire: My Fair Lady (1964), Poor Things (2023), The Bride! (2026), and Obsession (2025)

    Season 7

    Show notes

No tricks listeners! Just a very special treat for this year's Halloween episode! And what is more terrifying than monsters, ghouls, and serial killers? Apparently, being rejected by a woman. We turn to the Greco-Roman myth of Pygmalion and Galatea to analyze these four modern films and attempt to answer some important questions. What's the difference between a Prometheus and a Pygmalion creation? Will a Pygmalion adaptation always contain an element of horror? What can we expect in a gender-swapped Pygmalion adaptation?

All we can say for sure is we meet some truly insufferable men (Higgins, Duncan, and Bear) along with some pretty amazing Final Girls (Eliza, Bella, and Nikki). Oh, I guess Frank and Ida are there too.

  3. Ulysses (1954), with Laura Jenkinson-Brown

    Season 6

    Show notes

Feel like you've heard WAY too much about Odysseus? Too bad, because we're wrapping up our season with one more iteration of the famous Homeric hero. But this time, we're going old-school to discuss the 1954 film Ulysses. We are joined by special guest Laura Jenkinson-Brown (aka Jenks of Greek Myth Comix) to help us map out Ulysses' journey home. While our intrepid bard/hero gets waylaid by various side quests (and gorgeous women), we inevitably return to Nolan's Odyssey and how depictions of Odysseus have shifted over time in popular media. But the real question is, when are we getting a slasher horror version?

To learn more about Laura and her work including her comics, blogs, and knitwear, visit her website. If you would like to get your hands on her book You Are Odysseus you can purchase a paperback or digital version here or check out the audiobook podcast!

  4. In the Hand of Dante (2025), with Gianna Albaum

    Season 6

    Show notes

What made Dante Alighieri one of the world's greatest poets and a foundational figure for Italian culture? We're not sure because we left this film more confused than when we started. Yes, we descend into the Inferno that is In the Hand of Dante (2025), the very-hard-to-follow noir about an author recovering a manuscript of La Divina Commedia from the criminal underworld, set alongside the story of the poem's creator (sort of). Fortunately, we have our own personal Vergil to guide us through heaven and hell, professor of Italian Studies and a very special guest, Dr. Gianna Albaum. Listen to us debate a whole host of riveting issues, including morality, religion, Pope-politics and one Mr. Marty Scorsese. Justice for Gemma!

You can read more from Gianna on her profile here and look out for the upcoming Queer Mediterranean conference Spring '26 at Smith College.

  5. Marble (2026), with Taylor Catalana

    Season 6

    Show notes

Needing a break from Odysseus, we thought it was time to look at another important mythohistorical figure from the ancient Mediterranean world: Mary. You know, the Blessed Mother, Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Our Lady, Holy Virgin, Madonna (no, not the musician). Lucky for us, we got our hands a brand new historical fiction novel titled Marble, which is set to hit the shelves later this month. Even luckier, the author Taylor Catalana joins us to discuss her feminist retelling of Mary's life story (before all the aforementioned titles). We talk about the the media and history that inspired the novel, the significant themes of motherhood and choice, and just how difficult it is to depict an angel.

Marble is set to release on September 29, 2026. To preorder your copy, visit the Modern Artist Press website. If you would like to learn more about Taylor and upcoming events relating to her book, visit her website or Instagram page.

What can be said about Nolan's Odyssey that hasn't already been said? Well hopefully a few things! The MWD crew gives their initial impressions on the biggest thing to hit the world of film and Classical studies since probably Gladiator. The main question on our mind: What version of Odysseus ended up coming home? Just beware of any sirens (spoilers) you may run into along the way if you have not had a chance to see the film yet!

    Season 6

    Show notes

Hop on board listeners as we take a look at another early 2000s animated film that maybe should have just fallen off the edge of the world. Helping us to discuss yet another problematic man lost at sea is none other than Liv Albert, the host of Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! and founding member of Mnemosyne: The Memory Collective. If, like us, you missed this swashbuckling-adventure in favor of another pirate film, than hold on to your harem pants! This film's got it all: blatant misogyny, erasure of Arabic culture, and a lovable crew! But hey, you can't get much more epic than Eris, Goddess of Discord.

From ambitious ancient architects to sexy evil priestesses, we've seen the "Mummy" take many forms, but none quite as horrifying as a modern teenage girl. Join us in unwrapping the latest reincarnation of this monster franchise with Lee Cronin's The Mummy. Helping us to investigate yet another creepy pyramid and it's resident demonic entity is special return guest and Egyptologist, Dr. Briana Jackson. While some might question if this film even has a real Mummy, there is no doubt Cronin drew inspiration from from all the previous films to explore fears that are timeless. Plus, we'll never look at a pedicure in the same way.

Disclaimer: We’ll be discussing a lot of heavy topics in this film including child abduction, grooming, and sexual assault. If those topics are difficult for you to engage with, it might be better to skip out on this episode.

It's May, so you know what that means? It's time to celebrate all those wonderful Mummies in film! With the help of return guest and Egyptologist, Dr. Julia Troche, we travel back in time to unravel the humble beginnings of the entire Mummy movie franchise. For a film nearing 100 years old, it has some surprisingly progressive takes on archaeology, colonialism, and female sexuality. It's a dangerous venture, and not all of us will make it to the end (of the podcast). But since when has that ever stopped a curious archaeologist/librarian?

Helping us to separate the original founding myth from an imaginative modern retelling are The Partial Historians, Dr. Rad and Dr. G! 20. Percy Jackson & The Olympians, Season 2 (2025), with Lexie Henning

    Season 6

    Show notes

If ever a series made us feel our age, it's this one! Once again, we return to Rick Riordan's fantastical world of teenage demi-gods with Disney's second season of Percy Jackson & The Olympians. Since your hosts are lost at sea when it comes to this series, we called upon a true aficionado and fellow Mnemosyne member, Lexie Henning, to help us navigate the world of prophecies and Party Ponies. Inevitably we find ourselves moored in discussion of early 2000s YA novels and their pitfalls. In the end, the sirens reveal to us the fatal flaw of adapting such tomes to the screen: No one is truly satisfied trying to relive the childhood memories of generations past.
