Google Ties AI Access to Search for K‑12 Schools
Episode 30
Show notes
Google announced that starting early next year, K‑12 districts that fully block its AI tools like Gemini will also lose default access to Google Search, since the company says search and AI are now deeply integrated. The move follows AI restrictions in New York City and Los Angeles schools and a new New York law limiting AI features for minors.
Cybersecurity firm Bitdefender described what it believes may be the first AI-assisted ransomware attack on a school system, after a UK school had roughly 37 of 50 machines encrypted via an automated, AI-generated command loop that created backdoor domain admin accounts and deleted backups.
K‑12 administration software vendor Frontline Education confirmed it is notifying over 1.3 million people about a data breach tied to an August 14 vulnerability in a third-party product, affecting its Frontline Central and School Health Management platforms, with notices filed in California, Indiana, and Iowa.

Microsoft's AI Privacy Standard Live Nationwide; Florida Aid Hack
Episode 29
Show notes
Microsoft's new U.S. National AI Safety and Privacy Standard became available today to every American school district with a Microsoft contract. Negotiated with the AFT and UFT, it bars using student or educator data for AI training, advertising, or sale, and adds breach and auditing provisions — though districts must request the addendum themselves.
Florida's Department of Education says a hack of its Florida Student Financial Aid website may have exposed sensitive data on roughly 4.9 million people, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and emails. The Florida Digital Service and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are assisting with the response.
Fairfax County Public Schools previewed draft classroom AI and technology policy, tying high schoolers' access to curriculum-grounded and general AI tools to demonstrated AI literacy rather than a flat grade cutoff. A board member called it about 75% ready, with a vote expected in February.
Chegg ($CHGG) shares rose after beating muted Q3 expectations, reporting $52 million in revenue and a two-cent adjusted loss per share.

Coursera Stock Craters on Guidance Miss as E-Rate Deadline Hits
Episode 28
Show notes
Coursera ($COUR) shares fell 25% today after the company's first full quarterly report since merging with Udemy showed slowing consumer growth and weak guidance. Revenue hit $377 million, up 94% year over year, but fourth-quarter revenue is expected to decline and the 2026 forecast was narrowed, prompting multiple analyst downgrades.
Today is the reply-comment deadline in a second FCC proceeding on E-Rate administration. New filing data shows nearly 99% of commenters want the program preserved, though they split on details like screen-time rules and oversight of funding consultants.
A group of suburban Kansas City districts, including Blue Valley, DeSoto, and Gardner-Edgerton, has asked the Kansas State Board of Education to let individual districts set their own instructional-technology rules instead of a single statewide policy, with a board decision expected in November.
The University of Oxford has begun a six-month study with England's Department for Education, Ofqual, and Oak National Academy on how pupil data can safely inform AI research and shape data-governance recommendations.

Hijacked K‑12 Logins Used to Phish Staff at Other Districts
Episode 27
Show notes
The U.S. Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center says 800 K‑12 school organizations had staff credentials circulating on dark web marketplaces last school year, out of 6,000 member districts. Attackers aren't just logging in with stolen credentials - they're using one hijacked district email account to phish that account's contacts at other districts, with some attackers impersonating superintendents to commit fraud.
Some of the largest U.S. school districts are telling the Federal Communications Commission that its E-Rate review should stay focused on connectivity, not classroom screen-time policy. A coalition of 105 bipartisan state legislators sent the FCC a letter warning the Commission's proposal overreaches beyond its historic focus on connectivity. Reply comments are due Thursday, November 12.
In New York City, about two dozen students, teachers and advocates protested ahead of the Panel for Educational Policy's monthly meeting, demanding the city's AI pilot for high schoolers be canceled and the current 2K-through-eighth-grade AI moratorium extended to high schools.
Long Beach Unified School District has opened surveys on how technology affects student learning, concentration, privacy and well-being, open through Friday, November 6, following student protests over AI's effect on independent thinking.

Court Keeps Bain Capital in PowerSchool Breach Suit Alive
Episode 26
Show notes
A U.S. federal court has denied motions to dismiss major claims against PowerSchool and its owner, private equity firm Bain Capital, in the multi-district class action over the December 2024 data breach that exposed records of an estimated 50 million students and teachers. The court found Bain Capital exerts operational control over PowerSchool's cybersecurity decisions and allowed claims under strict medical confidentiality laws to proceed.
Federal investigators now believe a known ransomware gang was behind the cyberattack that shut down Springfield Public Schools' network in Massachusetts, according to a Sept. 30 report the district submitted to the state. The breach knocked out email, phone and vital records for the district's 24,000 students, and stolen data later appeared on the dark web.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed what her office calls the nation's strongest AI safety law for kids, restricting commercial AI chatbots that mimic humans, build emotional dependency, or encourage self-harm, along with rules for internet-connected baby monitors. The chatbot law takes effect January 1, 2027.
A new report surveying 426 technology leaders finds that 66% of districts whose daily operations were disrupted by cyberattacks employ only one or two dedicated cybersecurity staff members, underscoring the staffing gap behind incidents like Springfield and PowerSchool.

Children's advocacy group Fairplay released a model Student-First AI Policy to help school districts vet AI tools before classroom use, citing research linking student AI use to weaker learning outcomes.
Single sign-on provider ClassLink launched Insights, a new K‑12 analytics system pairing edtech usage data with student assessment results, priced at $2 per user per year.
Edsby introduced Destinations, a competency-based assessment and reporting system unveiled at the FullScale Symposium, helping districts catalog learning evidence and track student progress against local standards.
Student behavior platform Minga acquired RTI Scheduler, a flex and intervention scheduling tool, months after a $65 million growth investment to expand across U.S. districts.

ChatGPT's Teen Mode Called Unsafe; Easthampton Schools Hacked
Episode 11
Show notes
Common Sense Media's Youth AI Safety Institute tested over 4,000 prompts and found ChatGPT's "Teen Mode" fails to flag suicide and self-harm signals and poses an "unacceptable risk" for users under 18; age-verification also failed to trigger teen settings reliably. OpenAI disputes the findings.
Easthampton Public Schools in Massachusetts shut down its network after discovering suspicious activity, bringing in forensic investigators while keeping classes open using manual systems and ParentSquare for family communication.
The Schools, Health and Libraries Broadband Coalition opened its AnchorNets 2026 conference in Arlington, Virginia, as the FCC's comment window on a proposal to limit or end E-Rate funding closes October 13 — a program that benefits roughly 96% of U.S. public schools.
