  1. Next Generation Entertainment Soaps: Milking it, Faking it and when Soaps get Disability right

    Season 1

    Show notes

🎭 NEXT GENERATION ENTERTAINMENT SOAPS 🎭

FAKING IT, MILKING IT, AND MIRACULOUS RECOVERIES!

Originally aired Monday at 8 PM Eastern.

In the world of daytime drama, nothing is ever quite what it seems. Especially when it comes to illness, disability, revenge, and those miraculous recoveries that only seem possible in soap opera land! 😂

This week, our co-host Sue’s fascinating question about soap opera characters who fake disabilities or prolong illnesses to manipulate others sparked a lively conversation about some of daytime television’s most memorable and controversial storylines.

From Palmer Cortlandt manipulating his daughter Nina into believing she was going blind on All My Children, to Nikki Newman’s blindness and seemingly miraculous recovery on The Young and the Restless, we revisited the storytelling, the stereotypes, and the dramatic twists that kept audiences talking.

Our listeners brought some unforgettable examples to the conversation!

📩 Tommy reminded us of Alan Spaulding on Guiding Light, who pretended to remain paralyzed as part of his revenge against Roger Thorpe.

📩 Stephanie took us back to As the World Turns in the early 1980s, when Craig Montgomery faked paralysis to hold on to Betsy Stewart.

We explored the disability experience through the lens of daytime television, asking some important questions.

Where did soap opera writers get it right?

Where did they get it spectacularly wrong?

And when did dramatic storytelling cross the line into harmful stereotypes?

Of course, this is Next Generation Entertainment Soaps, so the conversation didn’t stop there! 😂

📺 Recaps, reactions, and the latest happenings across daytime television.

🔮 Theories, predictions, and a few potential spoilers.

🏆 A look ahead to the Daytime Emmy Awards.

😂 And plenty of opinions, laughter, memories, and the wonderfully unpredictable conversations that happen when passionate soap fans get together!

From unforgettable characters to outrageous plot twists, this episode celebrates everything we love about daytime drama while taking a thoughtful look at how disability has been portrayed on our favorite soaps.

Because in soap opera land, even paralysis isn’t necessarily permanent! 😂

    NEXT GENERATION ENTERTAINMENT SOAPS

    THE MIKE MANNING CONVERSATION

FROM THE REAL WORLD TO BEYOND THE GATES

COMING OUT, FINDING HIS VOICE, AND BRINGING SMITTY TO LIFE

    Presented by Anthony Corona Media
Home of the Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts and Digital Media Content Services

What happens when the real world, the reel world, and the wonderfully outrageous world of daytime drama collide?

    You get Mike Manning!

Actor, producer, advocate, and two-time Daytime Emmy Award winner Mike Manning joined the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps crew for a conversation that took us well beyond the scripts, the sets, and the sensational storylines.

And what a conversation it was!

We traveled back to Mike’s time on MTV’s The Real World: D.C., exploring what it meant to come out as bisexual in the public eye at just 22 years old, the challenges and discoveries that followed, and how those experiences helped shape the man, artist, and advocate he would become.

We talked about finding his voice, embracing his identity, and using his platform to advocate for others.

From his involvement with the documentary Kidnapped for Christ to his work connected with The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, we explored the projects, people, and causes that have helped define his journey beyond acting.

And then, of course, we went through the gates!

Mike opened up about the extraordinary full-circle experience of portraying Bradley “Smitty” Smith on CBS’s Beyond the Gates, an investigative journalist navigating marriage, family, ambition, and life alongside Congressman Martin Richardson.

We talked about what that representation means today, and perhaps even more poignantly, what seeing a character like Smitty on daytime television might have meant to the 22-year-old Mike Manning who was just beginning to embrace and share his own identity with the world.

We also revisited Salem and Mike’s unforgettable portrayal of Charlie Dale on Days of Our Lives, a character whose dark and explosive storyline certainly gave daytime viewers plenty to talk about.

And naturally, we explored the remarkable reception Beyond the Gates has received, the response to Smitty and his storyline, Mike’s Daytime Emmy nomination for the role, and the creative opportunities that continue to unfold throughout his career.

There were stories, surprises, reflections, plenty of laughter, and moments of genuine vulnerability.

Mike was funny, engaging, thoughtful, raw, honest, and wonderfully generous with his time and experiences.

We loved every minute of having him at our table.

AND THEN, THE SOAPS KEPT BUBBLING!

Following our conversation with Mike, we rolled right into everything you’ve come to expect from the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps crew.

The latest recaps. Breaking news. Casting developments. Spoilers. Predictions. Questions. Theories. And, of course, our occasionally outrageous opinions about what our favorite characters have been getting themselves into.

From General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful to The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives, and Beyond the Gates, there was no shortage of drama to dissect.

Because the drama never stops, the theories never end, and our opinions are never in short supply!

    A SPECIAL THANK YOU

Our sincere thanks to Mike Manning for joining us, sharing his story, and giving us a conversation that was as entertaining as it was meaningful.

A very special thank you to Carolyn for helping take this interview from an idea to the microphone. Your work behind the scenes helped make this wonderful evening possible.

And, as always, thank you to our fabulous Next Generation Entertainment Soaps family: David, Candace, and Sue Ellen, for bringing their knowledge, humor, enthusiasm, and perspectives to the conversation.

Ashley couldn’t join us for this episode, but her spirit was certainly felt around the table

  3. Bonus Episode Rc Cates daytime Music Legend on The Remix

    Season 1

    Show notes

    THE REMIX PRESENTS: RC CATES

11 EMMYS AND THE MUSIC BEHIND THE SOAPS

Multiple Emmy winner RC Cates joins Pam and Anthony on Take2 Radio: The Remix for a conversation about a career spent creating music from nearly every angle, as a guitarist, composer, producer and music supervisor.

RC takes us back to discovering music and his early years performing and touring with Entourage before making the move into composing and producing.

Along the way, his career crossed paths with a Prince.

RC shares the story behind co-composing music for Prince projects 3 Chains O’ Gold and The Beautiful Experience, and takes us inside a remarkable career creating music for television.

And for soap fans, this is where things get especially interesting.

With 11 Emmy Awards for his work across the soap opera landscape, RC has helped create some of the music that became part of the emotional soundtrack of daytime television, including work for The Young and the Restless and General Hospital.

What does it actually take to compose music for television?

RC takes us behind the scenes of the process, talks about how technology has transformed the way he creates and works, and shares some of the music and projects that remain closest to his heart.

We also get into RC’s own music, his years in the business and, naturally, a few stories collected along the way.

    EDITOR’S NOTE

Pam and Anthony are taking some fascinating journeys with comedians, musicians and legacy acting interviews on Take2 Radio: The Remix.

Through a joint partnership between the Sunday Edition family of podcasts and Take2 Radio, we’re sitting down with people who have stories to tell, adventures to share and careers worth exploring from a few different angles.

So why are we sharing this particular conversation with our Next Generation Entertainment Soaps audience?

    Eleven very good reasons.

RC Cates has earned 11 Emmy Awards for music he has created across the soap opera landscape, including work connected to The Young and the Restless and General Hospital. For those of us who love daytime, music is part of the storytelling. It tells us when to worry, when to hope, when somebody is about to fall in love and, occasionally, when somebody probably should not open that door.

This conversation gives us the opportunity to meet one of the people behind that soundtrack.

  4. NGE Soaps Fall into Fall

    Season 1

    Show notes

    NEXT GENERATION ENTERTAINMENT SOAPS

Soapland waited a little longer for us this time, but we promise there was a perfectly good reason.

First, our apologies for the delay in getting this episode into your podcast feed. A few technical difficulties decided to write themselves into the storyline, and Anthony was away enjoying a little birthday vacation.

So while Anthony was off celebrating another trip around the sun, Candice grabbed the facilitator mic, gathered the gang, and kept the conversation moving. And yes, all of our usual theories, disagreements, detours, laughter, and general soap-loving antics abound.

This time around, the crew has plenty to say about all five daytime dramas.

    BEYOND THE GATES

Could Heather somehow be behind the deaths of Andre’s parents?

We dig into that theory and what it could mean if the pieces really do begin pointing in her direction.

Meanwhile, Haley and Bill’s story continues, but is it actually going anywhere? The panel talks about why this storyline needs more movement and what might finally kick it into another gear.

And we have some well-earned praise for Kelly Sullivan as Darcy. She has made an impression, and we’re talking about why.

    THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS

New writing material is expected to begin airing November 11, and naturally that has us wondering what changes might be ahead for Genoa City.

But before we get there, we have one rather simple question:

Why did we need Matt Clark?

Was this return necessary? What has it added? And where exactly is all of this supposed to be going?

    THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

Dylan reminds Katie of Brooke, and apparently that is enough to put Katie’s guard up.

But is Katie judging Dylan for who she actually is, or for who she reminds her of?

We also talk about Electra and why she needs more investment from the show runners if she is going to stand on equal footing with Dylan. If these younger characters are going to matter to the future of the show, the writing has to give all of them enough material to make us care.

    DAYS OF OUR LIVES

Welcome Sydney Malakeh as Sydney DiMera.

And apparently the DiMera DNA is working just fine, because Sydney may have inherited more than the family name. She is already giving us shades of EJ.

Meanwhile, Chad and Belle’s Italian journey continues to expand, bringing more entanglement with Marlena, Dominic Moreno, and the mysterious buyer of the Kiriakis estate.

The canvas continues filling in story holes created by Deidre Hall’s departure while opening some intriguing new doors along the way.

    GENERAL HOSPITAL

One car accident can rearrange an awfully large portion of Port Charles.

We look at how the accident could make Curtis and Jordan more relevant by pulling them more directly into the Quartermaine orbit and creating new intersections among characters who have not always shared story.

    Then there is Brook Lynn.

Is her involvement in everything that has happened really substantial enough to implode her marriage? We debate whether the story has earned those stakes or whether the consequences are racing ahead of the actual offense.

    QUESTION FOR OUR LISTENERS

Candice and Anthony have one for you:

What elements from the 1990s soap genre would you like to see return to present-day soaps?

Bigger umbrella stories? Longer romances? True supercouples? Sweeps events? Location shoots? Villains who stayed villains long enough for us to truly hate them? Stories that simmered instead of sprinted?

We want to hear what you miss and, more importantly, what you think could still work today.

Next Generation Entertainment Soaps brings together blind and sighted soap fans for recaps, reactions, theories, history, interviews, spoilers, disagreements and the wonderfully unpredictable conversations that happen when people who genuinely love daytime television get together.

Because soaps are better when we watch them together.

  5. The Practice of Happy A Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts Special Conversation

    Season 1

    Show notes

Sunday Edition Presents: THE PRACTICE OF HAPPY

    CONVERSATION FOUR

    PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Over the past four weeks, The Practice of Happy has explored happiness from several different directions.

    What is happiness?

    How do we recognize it?

How can happiness exist alongside grief, anger, frustration, fear, disappointment, joy, hope, excitement and everything else that makes up a full emotional life?

How do relationships, expectations, outside influences, internal reactions and the voices in our own heads shape the way we experience a moment?

And perhaps most importantly, what do we actually do with all of that?

In this final conversation, we move from discussion into practice. ❤️🧠🪞🗺️

Anthony Corona is joined by panelists Judy, Mark, Lorna and Gabriel for a practical exploration of the exercises, checklists and internal conversations developed throughout this series.

Special thanks to Holly for taking care of the recording and helping keep everything moving behind the scenes. 🎙️❤️

This conversation is built around one important understanding.

No two people are the same.

    These exercises are not rules.

They are not written in stone.

They are not instructions for the right way to feel, think, react or respond.

    They are a roadmap.

    A set of guidelines.

A collection of tools you can adapt, change, combine, simplify or completely reshape to form your own internal checklist and your own conversations.

    The goal is not uniformity.

    The goal is awareness.

To create a little more room between reaction and choice.

To better understand what we are feeling.

To recognize what may be influencing us.

To decide what we actually want.

And then to consider what response might move us closer to that outcome.

During this conversation, we explore several practical concepts and exercises.

🪞 THE MIRROR AND THE MAP

We begin by asking one of the largest questions possible.

    Who am I?

Using 4, 2, 6 breathing as a reset, we look at the emotional and practical skills that are already working, the areas we may want to strengthen, the things that may be blocking us and the qualities we know to be good and true about ourselves.

Then we create our own internal mirror statement.

    A personal mantra.

    Something honest.

    Something useful.

Something that belongs entirely to us.

    🧠 THE INTERNAL CONVERSATION

Sometimes there is more than one voice responding to what is happening.

    Anger.

    Fear.

    Sadness.

    Frustration.

    Instinct.

    Experience.

    Hope.

    Need.

    Expectation.

The goal is not to silence any of them.

    Instead, we listen.

    We identify the strongest voice.

We ask whether the loudest voice is actually capable of leading.

Then we create an impartial internal leader who can hear the full conversation and help decide what deserves attention, what can wait and what action, if any, should come next.

    😊 THE EMOTIONAL TABLE

Inspired by the concept behind Inside Out, we imagine our emotions taking seats around an internal table.

    Who grabbed the biggest chair?

    Who is dominating the room?

    Who keeps interrupting?

    Who has been ignored?

Who have we refused to invite?

    Each emotion gets a voice.

Each emotion may get a vote.

But no single emotion automatically gets control.

The most important person eventually takes the head of the table.

    You.

🦮 INSIDE OUT AND THE GUIDE DOG DENIAL

We bring the emotional table into a real world disability scenario.

A Guide Dog handler waits for an Uber.

    The driver arrives.

    The driver says no dogs.

The handler explains that this is a trained Guide Dog.

The driver repeats no dogs and pulls away.

    Now what?

    Anger may show up.

    Frustration may arrive.

    Fear.

    Disappointment.

    Embarrassment.

    Determination.

    Problem solving.

    Maybe several at once.

The exercise asks whether Anger can sit beside Reason.

Whether Fear can sit beside Confidence.

Whether Frustration can sit beside Problem Solving.

Whether disappointment can exist alongside the memory of the wonderful evening that came before the denial.

Again, the goal is not to remove emotion.

It is to put emotion into proportion.

    📋 THE THREE CHECKLISTS

We also bring together three practical inventories designed to help slow down the progression between feeling, reaction and action.

    The Emotional Inventory asks.

    What am I feeling?

    Why am I feeling it?

    What is contributing to it?

    What may be inflaming it?

    Which feeling is strongest?

Which feeling may actually deserve the most attention?

    The Internal Behavior Inventory asks.

    What is my immediate reaction?

What happens if I wait five minutes?

    Ten minutes?

    Overnight?

Am I reacting to what actually happened or to what I think happened?

Does my proposed response support the outcome I actually want?

And what response will I still feel comfortable owning tomorrow?

The Influence and Manipulation Inventory asks us to look at the forces around us and within us.

What outside factors are shaping how I feel?

What story am I telling myself?

    What assumptions am I making?

    What do I want?

    What might someone else want?

    Are those motivations compatible?

Can I influence the situation in a more constructive direction?

    And ultimately.

What influence do I want to have on what happens next?

    💬 THE ACCESSIBILITY POST

The conversation begins and ends with the same scenario.

You post about an accessibility problem.

    Most responses are helpful.

Two are sarcastic, passive aggressive or dismissive.

Suddenly those two comments are taking up more emotional space than everything else.

    We capture the initial reaction.

Then we work through the exercises and concepts.

At the end, we return to the same situation and ask.

    What do I feel now?

    What is influencing me?

    What do I want?

    What would I do?

    Did anything change?

    Maybe it did.

    Maybe it did not.

    Neither answer is the goal.

The goal is noticing whether understanding ourselves more clearly changes what happens between reaction and choice.

    THE PRACTICE OF HAPPY

The Practice of Happy is not about pretending everything is wonderful.

It is not about suppressing anger, sadness, frustration, disappointment, fear or grief.

It is about becoming more aware of what happens between emotion and action.

    Feeling.

    Understanding.

    Pausing.

    Sorting.

    Choosing.

    Responding.

Sometimes we may write these answers down.

Sometimes we may talk them through with someone we trust.

Sometimes the entire process may happen inside our own heads while walking the dog, sitting in traffic, lying in bed or staring at a text message we probably should not answer quite yet.

The more often we practice the process, the more familiar it becomes.

And perhaps that is where the word practice matters most.

Happy is not necessarily a permanent destination.

Sometimes happy is something we make room for by understanding everything else already in the room.

A SEPARATE PRACTICAL APPENDIX IS COMING

There will also be a separate podcast posting featuring the appendix recording of the exercises, checklists and concepts from this conversation.

That companion recording is designed as a practical facilitation tool.

You can use it to outline your own conversation.

    Adapt individual exercises.

    Build your own roadmap.

Use selected questions as personal reflection prompts.

Or use the material exactly as presented to facilitate a conversation with a group, organization, classroom, team, support network, family or circle of friends.

The tools belong to you now.

Shape them into something that works for your life.

    THANK YOU

Special thanks to Holly for handling the recording. ❤️🎙️

And thank you to our Conversation Four panelists.

    Judy.

    Mark.

    Lorna.

    Gabriel.

Most of all, thank you to every person who contributed their thoughts, stories, questions, experiences and perspectives throughout all four weeks of The Practice of Happy.

We are incredibly proud of where these conversations have taken us.

And after four weeks of exploring the ideas, emotions and influences behind happiness, we are finally bringing it all into practical application.

    Not a rulebook.

    Not a formula.

    A roadmap.

    A starting point.

And an invitation to form your own Practice of Happy. ❤️🧠🪞🗺️

  7. A Dramatic Evening with Melissa Archer

    Season 1

    Show notes

A DRAMATIC EVENING WITH MELISSA ARCHER

A Next Generation Entertainment Soaps Special Event

What an incredible evening with Melissa Archer.

From Natalie Buchanan to Serena Mason.

    From Llanview to Salem.

    From faith to frivolity.

From daytime television to a whole new chapter as a creator, developer and entrepreneur.

Melissa Archer joined the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps family for an evening that became so much more than a walk down soap opera memory lane.

Melissa was open, candid, vulnerable, funny and refreshingly honest as she revisited the characters, stories and people who helped shape more than two decades of her life and career.

And right out of the box, Anthony threw the hosting microphone to Maryland.

Cohost Candice took over so we could talk about one of Melissa’s newest projects, Haven Falls, a brand new audio drama with its first seven episodes available now.

Melissa plays a lawyer in the series whose path has not quite crossed with Candice’s character yet, the self proclaimed saint of Haven Falls.

    Yet.

    We will definitely be listening.

Then, of course, we went back to Llanview.

Melissa took us all the way back to that first scene opposite Erika Slezak, the legendary Victoria Lord, and reflected on the experience of stepping onto One Life to Live as Natalie.

From there, the memories came quickly.

We revisited some of Natalie’s biggest storylines, relationships and unforgettable moments. But what made the conversation particularly special was hearing Melissa look back at them from where she stands today.

She shared her impressions of her own performances, talked about the actors who challenged and elevated her work and reflected on moments that look and feel different with the perspective that only time can provide.

Then we traveled from Llanview to Salem and Serena Mason.

And yes, we talked about Serena’s memorable demise.

When the conversation turned to acting bucket lists, Melissa revealed that getting a great soap opera death scene had actually been on hers.

    Mission accomplished.

    We also looked ahead.

Melissa shared a little about her upcoming movie, Awesome Gals, based on a true story that is both poignant and beautiful.

It is another project we cannot wait to see.

But this evening was never going to stay entirely on our television and movie screens.

    We talked about faith.

    We talked about life.

We talked about change, creativity and what happens when one chapter of a career leads somewhere you might never have expected.

Melissa, a self proclaimed dork, introduced us to another side of herself that some longtime soap fans may not know nearly as well.

    The digital creator.

    The developer.

    The entrepreneur.

Melissa shared the excitement and passion she has discovered building websites, applications and digital tools.

One of those creations is Invoiceabill, the back office for freelancers that Melissa created from her own experience and needs.

But another part of our conversation really caught Anthony’s attention.

Melissa shared some of her research into remapping and retraining the brain and introduced us to NeuroRewire, the app she created around those concepts.

NeuroRewire is designed around the idea of rewiring and reframing thought patterns, helping users work with the brain to develop new mental pathways, perspectives and habits.

    Anthony was fascinated.

In fact, he is diving into NeuroRewire today.

We could try to explain Melissa’s work and the thinking behind the app here.

But we are not going to.

You need to hear Melissa explain it herself.

Her excitement is infectious, her passion is unmistakable and hearing her describe this chapter of her life in her own words is one of our favorite parts of the conversation.

And because this is Next Generation Entertainment Soaps, we also had to have a little fun.

Anthony Corona led the conversation, joined live by cohosts David, Candice and Sue Ellen.

Cohost Ashley had a prior commitment and could not join us live, but she made sure we had a fun collection of questions to ask Melissa on her behalf.

Our audience got into the act too.

Audrey wanted the truth about one of the great institutions of daytime television.

    The soap opera slap.

    What is the technique?

How do actors make it look and sound so real?

Has Melissa ever accidentally slapped someone too hard?

And has anyone ever landed one on her a little harder than planned?

Melissa walked us through it all.

And yes, there is a technique.

This conversation had a little bit of everything.

    Memories.

    Laughter.

    Faith.

    Honesty.

    Reflection.

    Soap opera history.

    Audio drama.

    Movies.

    Technology.

    Entrepreneurship.

And a woman who may have spent years entertaining us on our television screens, but clearly has plenty more chapters to write.

Whether you first knew Melissa Archer as Natalie Buchanan, discovered her as Serena Mason, are listening to her newest work in Haven Falls or are just discovering Melissa herself, this is a conversation worth spending some time with.

  8. Next Generation Entertainment Soaps From Summer Sizzle to Fall- Fallouts

    Season 1

    Show notes

    NEXT GENERATION ENTERTAINMENT SOAPS

FROM SUMMER SIZZLE TO FALL SWEEPS

    SHOW NOTES

Summer may still be hanging on, but in daytime television, the temperature is already beginning to change.

On Monday night, the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps crew gathered around the soap table to look back at what has been sizzling this summer and, more importantly, what may be waiting for us as we head toward fall sweeps and the final months of 2026.

And we had an extra treat.

Carolyn joined us with the tea from Los Angeles, and it was great to have our Daytime Queen back in the house with us.

We covered all five remaining daytime dramas, with plenty of recaps, theories, spoilers, opinions, laughter, and a few predictions that could either make us look brilliant or come back to haunt us spectacularly.

Anthony had General Hospital, where Drew wants revenge, Ava is setting traps, and Valentin, Carly, Jason, and Brennan continue moving pieces around the Port Charles chessboard. We looked at what is happening now and what some of these stories could be setting up for fall.

David had The Bold and the Beautiful, where Steffy and Carter have some explaining to do, Ridge is caught in the fallout, and Will and Dylan continue getting closer while Katie is asking questions.

Because nothing says Los Angeles fashion like romance, secrets, and somebody walking into exactly the wrong room.

SUEELLENV had Beyond the Gates, where Bill and Hayley remain one very complicated pressure cooker while Chelsea, Alison, Andre, and the Dupree orbit continue serving up secrets, family drama, romance, and plenty of reasons to keep watching Fairmont Crest.

Ashley had Days of Our Lives, where Johnny and Chanel face major family developments while Cat, EJ, Rolf, Marlena, and the returning Jack keep Salem doing what Salem does best.

Making absolutely certain nobody can ever have a peaceful week.

Candice had The Young and the Restless, where Matt Clark and Patty are stirring up Genoa City history while Victor, Phyllis, and Adam circle the action.

And then there is Victoria and Kyle.

    A rivalry.

    A kiss.

And approximately seven thousand ways this could become gloriously complicated.

Throughout the show, we looked at the stories that truly sizzled this summer, the characters and couples who surprised us, and the stories that may have cooled off considerably more than the writers intended.

Then we turned our attention toward fall.

Which major fall sweeps stories are beginning to take shape?

Which couples are headed for romance, disaster, or both?

Which secrets are getting dangerously close to exploding?

And which stories appear to be positioning themselves to carry us through the final months of 2026?

    We had theories.

    We had spoilers.

    We had opinions.

And we had all the recaps, conversation, fun, and frivolity you have come to know and love from the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps crew.

Join Anthony, David, SUEELLENV, Ashley, Candice, and Carolyn for another trip through Port Charles, Los Angeles, Fairmont Crest, Salem, and Genoa City.

  9. NGE Soaps WHo's Kid is this Anyway?

    Season 1

    Show notes

Next Generation Entertainment Soaps Who’s Kid is this Anyway

This week we are opening the doors to one of daytime televisions favorite closets.

    You know the one.

The closet where apparently every soap family has been hiding a fully grown child nobody knew existed. 🤩

    Long lost children.

    Secret children.

    Children believed dead.

    Children given away.

Children whose parents never knew they existed.

And children who walk into town already knowing exactly who Mom or Dad is and carrying enough resentment to power an entire sweeps period.

We are looking back at some of the greatest surprise children and family revelations in soap history.

Anthony takes us to Port Charles and Carly Roberts arrival as the daughter Bobbie Spencer had given up for adoption. Carly knew exactly who Bobbie was. Bobbie had absolutely no idea Carly was her daughter. And Carly certainly did not come to town looking for a quiet mother daughter reunion.

David heads to Pine Valley for Erica Kanes complicated history with Kendall Hart and one of the most controversial retcons in daytime history, Josh Madden.

For decades, Ericas abortion was one of daytime televisions most significant stories. Then All My Children revealed that the abortion supposedly never happened and that Dr. Greg Madden had secretly transferred the fetus, resulting in Erica and Jeff Martins grown son Josh.

Brilliant soap insanity or an unforgivable rewrite of television history?

    We have thoughts.

Candice takes us to Genoa City for Claire Grace, the daughter Victoria Newman and Cole Howard believed they had lost decades earlier, and Mariah Copeland, who turned out to be more than a woman who looked exactly like Cassie.

    She was Cassies twin.

    And Sharons daughter.

Because apparently even childbirth in Genoa City can come with missing paperwork. 🤩

Ashley takes us back to Springfield and Reva Shaynes surprise sons Dylan Lewis and Jonathan Randall.

If you remember Tom Pelphreys Jonathan, you already know that particular family reunion did not arrive quietly.

Sue heads to Llanview, where the Buchanan and Lord family trees practically required their own cartographers.

    Natalie.

    Jessica.

    Todd.

    Victor.

    Rex.

Twins, secret parentage, switched identities and enough DNA revelations to keep Llanview laboratories operating around the clock.

We also visit Bay City for Mac Corys surprise children Sandy Alexander and Paulina Cantrell, along with one of our favorite variations on the story.

    Lorna Devon and Felicia Gallant.

Imagine discovering that the young woman who has become your enemy is actually your biological daughter.

That is daytime television doing what daytime television does best.

And of course Santa Barbara joined the family reunion.

Cassandra Benedict was revealed as Minx Lockridges daughter, while Brick Wallace was eventually revealed as the biological son of Sophia Capwell and Lionel Lockridge after a baby switch.

Because naturally there was a baby switch.

    It was Santa Barbara. 🤩

We bring the conversation back to todays soaps with Cody Bell and Mac Scorpio on General Hospital, Stefan DiMera and Stefano on Days of Our Lives, and the later revelation that Xander Cook Kiriakis was actually Victor Kiriakis son.

But the bigger conversation is why these stories work.

When does a long lost child deepen what we already know about a beloved character?

When does a surprise relative become a brilliant revelation?

When does it become a retcon?

And when does rewriting history go too far?

Which surprise child shocked you most?

    Which one did you love?

Which one made absolutely no sense?

And which current soap character probably has a fully grown child somewhere just waiting to walk through the door?

After our roundtable, Anthony, David, Candice, Ashley, Sue and the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps crew turn to everything happening right now across daytime.

    The recaps.

    The breaking news.

    The casting shakeups.

    The returns.

    The exits.

    The spoilers.

    The stories making us cheer.

The stories making us yell at our televisions.

And of course the fan theories that sound completely ridiculous right up until the soaps prove us right. 🤩

You can find Next Generation Entertainment Soaps wherever you listen to podcasts.

And if you have not listened yet, our recent conversations with John Lindstrom and Vincent Irizarry are waiting for you in the podcast feed.

We also have a fabulous new interview coming in two weeks with someone who is currently getting quite a bit of attention on General Hospital.

We are keeping that name tucked safely inside the soap opera vault for just a little longer. 🤩

Come for the long lost children.

    Stay for the secrets.

Because in soaps, nobody is ever really gone, nobody is necessarily who they think they are, and somewhere out there somebody probably has a DNA test waiting to ruin Thanksgiving.

And if you enjoy our conversations, interviews, writings and shows, please consider dropping a few coins into our tip jar. Every little bit helps us continue creating independent content for the soap community we love.

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Next Generation Entertainment Soaps.

An Evening with Jon Lindstrom and Our Emmy Conversation

The podcast version of our live broadcast is now available wherever you enjoy your favorite podcasts.

This week, we welcomed one of daytime television's most beloved storytellers. Actor. Author. Director. Producer. And one of the nicest people you could ever hope to spend an evening with. John Lindstrom joined us for a conversation filled with laughter, incredible memories, behind the scenes stories, and a genuine love for the art of daytime drama.

We began by congratulating this year's Daytime Emmy nominees and winners before turning our attention to one of the biggest stories of the season. Beyond the Gates earning an extraordinary 15 Emmy nominations in its very first year. John shared his thoughts on what that recognition means for the cast, the creative team, and daytime television as a whole.

From there, we took a journey through an amazing career that has spanned decades.

John reflected on his time across Santa Barbara, As the World Turns, General Hospital, Port Charles, and now Beyond the Gates. He shared stories about lifelong friendships, unforgettable moments on set, and why playing Joey has become one of the most enjoyable experiences of his career.

Of course, we could not resist asking one of our favorite questions.

Who were John's favorite on screen kissers.

    His answer.

    Everyone.

    A diplomatic answer. Maybe.

    A true answer.

    Absolutely.

The stories behind it made for one of the funniest moments of the night.

John also took us back to the groundbreaking days of Port Charles and the creative risks that series embraced long before many others were willing to do the same. We laughed about Kevin and Mac dressing in drag with John J. York and revisited some of the wonderfully unpredictable storytelling that made Port Charles such a fan favorite.

Beyond acting, we explored John's incredible work as an author. He discussed his Hollywood series of novels, including his newest release, Hollywood Payback, the creative process behind building that universe, and even gave us a glimpse into what readers can look forward to next.

In our second hour, the conversation shifted to this year's Daytime Emmy Awards.

Our panel broke down the nominations, celebrated the winners, debated the biggest surprises, discussed a few performances we felt deserved more recognition, and pulled back the curtain on how the Emmy submission process really works. We also explored what separates a good acting reel from a great one and made our predictions for who we believe could emerge as this year's winners and dark horse contenders.

As always, the conversation was thoughtful, passionate, and just plain fun.

A huge thank you to John Lindstrom for spending the evening with us and for reminding us why he has remained one of daytime's most respected performers for so many years.

Thank you to David Salvagni, Candice Mack, Ashley Morgan, Sue ellen Mellow, and Carolyn Jansen for another fantastic night of conversation.

  14. Celebrating 50 Years of Marlena and Sizzling Summer Recaps and Previews

    Season 1

    Show notes

Tonight on Next Generation Entertainment Soaps. Fifty Years of Marlena and a Summer of Secrets

Tonight, we are celebrating a true daytime television icon. 🎭❤️

For fifty years, Deidre Hall has brought Dr. Marlena Evans to life on Days of Our Lives, creating one of the most beloved and enduring characters in television history.

At the top of tonight’s show, Anthony and co hosts David, Candice, Ashley, Sue Allen, and Carolyn will take a look back at the extraordinary life and legacy of Marlena Evans.

From her unforgettable romance with Roman Brady and her epic love story with John Black, to her battles with Stefano DiMera and Kristen DiMera, Marlena has truly done it all.

We will revisit some of the character’s most memorable moments, including possession by the devil, the Salem Serial Killer mystery, countless kidnappings and presumed deaths, and her evolution as a mother, grandmother, psychiatrist, wife, friend, and the emotional heart of Salem.

Then it is time to turn our attention to all five of our favorite daytime dramas as every show is turning up the heat for a sizzling summer. ☀️🔥

On The Young and the Restless, Jack and Diane continue to navigate new challenges while the fallout from Victor’s latest power plays continues to ripple through Genoa City. Phyllis remains a wildcard, business battles are escalating, and alliances seem to be shifting by the day.

David says, “The thing I love about The Young and the Restless right now is that nobody feels completely safe. Every conversation feels like it could become a corporate war or a family disaster.”

On The Bold and the Beautiful, the battle lines between Katie and Brooke continue to be drawn. Meanwhile, RJ, Electra, and Dylan find themselves caught up in romance, family expectations, and enough drama to keep Los Angeles buzzing.

Candice notes, “The Bold and the Beautiful is doing what it does best. Family feuds, complicated romances, and characters making decisions that are guaranteed to have consequences.”

Beyond the Gates continues to prove why it is daytime’s hottest new address. The fallout from the devastating tornado continues to impact everyone in Fairmont Crest. Questions remain everywhere you turn.

Will Ashley choose Andre or Derek?

    And perhaps the bigger question.

Whose bed will Danny end up making tomorrow? 😄

Ashley laughs, “Every time I think I know where Beyond the Gates is headed, the writers pull the rug out from under me. I absolutely love it.”

On Days of Our Lives, Lexie may be living on borrowed time, and the chessboard is once again being arranged for new moves using a very familiar playbook. Salem is never short on danger, and with DiMera intrigue lurking around nearly every corner, nobody should get too comfortable.

Sue Allen says, “Days feels like classic Salem right now. Family secrets, DiMera scheming, impossible choices, and just enough danger to keep everyone looking over their shoulder.”

And then there is General Hospital.

Port Charles is preparing for the long awaited return of Anna Devane, portrayed by the incomparable Finola Hughes. Tensions continue to rise inside the Port Charles Police Department. Tracy, Chase, Willow, Michael, and a growing list of others appear destined for collision courses.

And of course, Sidwell remains as slimy and dangerous as ever, continuing to slither through Port Charles causing trouble wherever he goes. 🐍

Anthony says, “I am absolutely on the edge of my seat waiting for Anna’s return. Between the tension at the PCPD, the fallout among Willow, Michael, Tracy, and Chase, and Sidwell continuing to stir the pot, Port Charles feels ready to explode.”

Every soap is bringing the drama.

    Every family is hiding secrets.

    Every couple faces impossible choices.

And we cannot wait to break it all down with you.

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Next Generation Entertainment Soaps

Hosted by Anthony Corona, founder of the Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts and Digital Media Content Services, along with cohosts Candice, David, Ashley, Sue Ellen, and Mama Bear Pam.

This week, the gang gathered once again for a lively, passionate, and often hilarious deep dive into the latest happenings across the daytime drama landscape.

From the glamour and intrigue of Beyond the Gates to the twists and turns of The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, and General Hospital, no storyline was safe from discussion, debate, celebration, or good natured soap fan scrutiny.

We explored the fallout from major sweeps storylines, including shocking revelations, family betrayals, long simmering rivalries, and enough drama to keep viewers talking for months to come.

From elegant cotillions to medically resurrected beloved family members, we tackled the moments that had fans cheering, questioning reality, and occasionally yelling at their televisions.

The conversation also examined the ever evolving world of daytime villains, from truly dangerous bad actors to those claiming redemption, and perhaps only pretending to have turned over a new leaf.

Along the way, we discussed family feuds, power struggles, romantic entanglements, fashion triumphs, fashion disasters, and rivalries that continue to define some of daytime television’s most iconic characters.

Of course, no soap discussion would be complete without fake twins, improbable car accidents, questionable medical miracles, and storylines that somehow make absolutely no sense while remaining endlessly entertaining.

As always, the panel shared favorite moments, biggest disappointments, unexpected surprises, fan theories, wish list storylines, and plenty of laughs as they recapped another exciting week in daytime television.

Whether you agree with our takes or have theories of your own, this episode is packed with the passion, humor, and spirited conversation that soap fans have come to expect from Next Generation Entertainment Soaps.

  17. NGE Soaps Presents: Mother May I...

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Next Generation Entertainment Soaps Presents:

    Mother… May I?

This past Monday, the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps family gathered around the daytime television dinner table for a celebration of the mothers who nurtured us, terrified us, manipulated us, protected us and occasionally buried people alive in daytime television history.

Join Anthony, David, Ashley, Carolyn, Candice and Sue Ellen as they laugh, debate, reminisce and completely spiral into the world of soap opera motherhood across generations of daytime drama.

Anthony brought elegance, warmth and a little glorious insanity to the conversation while highlighting beloved matriarch Lila Quartermaine from General Hospital, then pivoting directly into the velvet chaos of Irene Manning from One Life to Live and the delightfully outrageous Vivian Alamain from Days of Our Lives.

Sue Ellen stepped into Genoa City with one of daytime’s most beloved mother figures, Katherine Chancellor from The Young and the Restless, exploring how maternal love sometimes arrives wrapped in champagne, razor sharp wit and emotional redemption.

Carolyn dove headfirst into powerhouse women like Lucinda Walsh from As the World Turns, examining the mothers who bulldozed through life with style, ambition and just enough emotional damage to fuel decades of unforgettable storylines.

Ashley brought the heart of daytime into focus with beloved mothers like Alice Horton from Days of Our Lives, Nancy Hughes from As the World Turns and Bert Bauer from Guiding Light, the women who reminded audiences what unconditional love and quiet strength looked like in worlds constantly exploding with secrets.

David tackled the emotional gray areas of motherhood with women like Erica Kane from All My Children, Stephanie Forrester from The Bold and the Beautiful and Sami Brady from Days of Our Lives, mothers who loved fiercely even while leaving emotional debris fields behind them.

Candice led the panel through some of the most unforgettable mother centered storylines in daytime history, including BJ’s heartbreaking heart transplant story on General Hospital, Erica Kane and Bianca’s groundbreaking emotional journey on All My Children, Marlena’s possession and family fallout on Days of Our Lives, the complicated Katherine Chancellor and Jill Abbott relationship on The Young and the Restless and the emotional motherhood stories surrounding Caroline Spencer on The Bold and the Beautiful.

And of course, the conversation did not stop there.

    The crew also counted down:

The craziest mothers in soap history including Helena Cassadine, Jill Abbott, Lisa Grimaldi, Sheila Carter and Tracy Quartermaine.

The greatest non biological mothers including Marlena Evans, Reva Shayne, Alexis Davis and Caroline Spencer.

The most beloved maternal figures across generations of daytime television.

And the wildest soap moms to ever storm into a living room carrying secrets, martinis and enough emotional baggage to sink an entire cruise ship.

Then after all the mama drama settled, the conversation rolled directly into the weekly soap dish featuring:

    Recaps

    Spoilers

    Speculation

    Predictions

    Fan theories

And those wonderfully wild conversations that somehow only make sense in the soap universe.

Things are heating up all across daytime television and trust us, there was a lot to unpack.

So grab your coffee, your wine, your tissues or your most dramatic soap opera glare and come hang with the Next Generation Entertainment Soaps crew for another unforgettable evening of laughter, nostalgia, chaos and classic daytime drama.

Because in daytime television, motherhood is never simple and secrets always come out eventually.

  18. I Feel So Free a Bonus tribute and announcement Mini Podcast

    Season 1

    Show notes

    I Feel So Free

A Sunday Edition Bonus Homage and Some Fashionable Announcements

The Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts and Digital Media Content Services proudly presents a special bonus episode that slips somewhere between a dance floor confession, a karaoke fever dream and a love letter to the Queen of Pop herself.

In this special release, Anthony Corona steps behind the microphone for a heartfelt homage to Madonna with his own spirited interpretation of I Feel So Free, the promotional single from the upcoming album Confessions on the Dance Floor Part 2.

    This is not simply karaoke.

    This is karaoke plus.

    A little theatrical.

    A little nostalgic.

A little sweaty disco ball magic at 2 AM.

Featuring additional remixing, atmospheric textures, layered vocals and playful surprises by Anthony’s friend Holly Anderson, the performance blends classic Madonna inspiration with Anthony’s own storytelling energy and dramatic flair.

The track pulses with echoes of Into the Groove, the hypnotic heartbeat of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love and the fearless release of a crowded dance floor where strangers become family for one glitter soaked evening.

At its core, the song becomes a celebration of identity, freedom, joy and the healing power of music.

It is about safety in numbers.

    It is about chosen family.

It is about surviving the world outside long enough to lose yourself inside the rhythm for a little while.

    Part homage.

    Part remix.

    Part performance art.

Part late night living room dance party with the furniture pushed dangerously too close to the walls.

This bonus episode also shines a light on the growing Sunday Edition family of podcasts and digital media projects.

Listeners are also encouraged to check out Apple Batter Up by Cheryl McNeil Fisher now available in the Sunday Edition with Anthony Corona podcast feed.

And of course, do not forget Behind the Music, Your Song, Your Story, happening live every second and fourth Friday night where performers, storytellers and music lovers gather to share songs, laughter, memories and moments that matter.

If you would like to participate in future broadcasts, submit music or connect with the Sunday Edition family, please see the contact information in the show notes.

Until then, turn the lights low.

    Turn the music loud.

And somewhere between the beat, the memories and the imaginary disco lights spinning across the ceiling, allow yourself a moment to remember what freedom sounds like.

    What freedom feels like.

And maybe even dance a little.

He takes us behind the scenes of a genre he helped transform with sharper dialogue, richer characters, and fearless storytelling.
