Why Your Golf Lessons Aren’t Lowering Your Scores
Season 13, Episode 57
Show notes
You took the lesson. You bought the wedges. So why are the same mistakes still showing up on your scorecard?
Tom Patri and PGA Tour Champions pro Jason Caron join Chris Mascaro to explore the habits, practice choices, and decisions that could be holding your game back.
First, Tom Patri explains why improvement depends on what happens between lessons—and why heading straight from a lesson to the first tee can leave you frustrated. He shares how bringing back the waggle can reduce tension, why a reliable pre-shot routine matters under pressure, and how to make wedge bounce your friend when the turf changes. Plus, TP takes us behind the scenes of his time with legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight.
Then, Jason Caron shares his journey from Cape Cod to the PGA Tour, a career as a club professional, and a fresh opportunity on PGA Tour Champions. Hear how his wife helped him rediscover his swing, what makes his partnership with his caddie work, and why your quickest path to lower scores may begin at the short-game area.
Along the way, you’ll learn how to focus on where you want the ball to go, get more value from practice, and stop giving away strokes without chasing more distance.
If you love golf legends, honest conversations, and golf tips you can take straight to the course, follow Next on the Tee—and share this episode with your golf buddies.

Halloween Bonus Edition, Haunted Fairways & Small Town Monsters with Seth & Courtney Breedlove Bonus
Season 13, Episode 56
Show notes
Would you believe crystal-clear footage of Bigfoot, UFOs, or other cryptids, or would you assume it was AI?
In this special Halloween bonus edition of Next on the Tee, I welcome Seth and Courtney Breedlove of Small Town Monsters for a fascinating conversation about Sasquatch, unexplained encounters, and the people behind the stories.
Seth shares his own fleeting encounter with what he believes could be a Bigfoot—and why he still questions what he saw. Courtney discusses patterns in witness accounts and the challenges of investigating something science has yet to establish.
We explore mysterious lights, unexplained footsteps, eerie baby-like cries, and a chilling encounter with a very real mountain lion. We also tackle the questions believers and skeptics keep asking: Why haven’t we found a body? Why don’t investigators stay longer where activity is reported? And what evidence could finally settle the debate?
Plus, we connect the mystery to golf through reported sightings and unusual tracks around golf courses, and discuss what they would do if they discovered extraordinary evidence.
Whether you’re curious, skeptical, or convinced something is out there, join us for a Halloween detour that might make you think twice before searching the woods for that wayward tee shot as the sun sets on the back nine.

Stop Chasing the Perfect Swing. Start Playing Better Golf.
Season 13, Episode 55
Show notes
What does a PGA Tour caddie say when his player feels the pressure—and why does your best driving-range swing sometimes disappear on the first tee?
This week on Next on the Tee, I welcome PGA Tour caddie Colton Heisey and golf instructor Daniel Guest for conversations packed with inside-the-ropes stories and practical ways to improve your game.
Colton shares his journey from Pennsylvania caddie days to getting the call to be on the bag for Max Homa in the Bahamas—with just three days to get there and no passport. He reflects on working with Sahith Theegala, Matthew Wolff, Brandon Matthews, and Lexi Thompson as well, plus the emotions of earning his first PGA Tour victory alongside Ricky Castillo at the Puerto Rico Open.
We also explore how caddies earn trust, recognize nerves, and help players reset after a poor shot. Plus, hear the story behind a jaw-dropping Brandon Matthews drive that required carrying the ball 355 yards over water to get the eagle they needed to make the cut, and Colton’s two simple course-management tips for amateur golfers.
Then, Imagen Golf founder Daniel Guest explains his approach to helping golfers improve without overwhelming them with swing positions. We discuss:
• Identifying your biggest miss and building a personalized improvement plan
• Addressing a persistent slice
• Practicing more like you play so your range work transfers to the course
• Setting realistic distance expectations and choosing clubs that help you score
• Questioning common swing advice, including “keep your head down”
From managing pressure to making smarter decisions, these conversations offer ideas you can take straight to your next round—with a little Vitamin G for gratitude along the way.

Season 13, Episode 54
Show notes
Could trying harder be hurting your golf game? This week on Next on the Tee, former PGA Tour pro and golf legend Scott Gump shares how learning to let go helped him perform under pressure—and how you can bring that mindset to your next round.
Scott revisits earning medalist honors during the stroke play portion of the 1987 U.S. Amateur, his two Masters appearances, and finishing runner-up to David Duval at the 1999 Players Championship. He also explains his “goalposts” approach to finding more fairways, smarter club selection, and why aggressive golf doesn’t have to mean taking unnecessary risks. Plus, we hear about his work helping develop the next generation through the USGA’s U.S. National Development Program.
Then, Tim Reilly, Head of Digital Content & Strategy at GOLF Magazine and GOLF.com, makes his show debut. Tim shares his determined journey into sports media and takes us inside stories showing golf’s power to change lives—from a young caddie’s scholarship to a prison rehabilitation program.
He also brings us along for a dream round at Augusta National, complete with Sunday hole locations, and gets to use his favorite player's locker. We round out the conversation with storytelling in the age of AI and the personal inspiration behind his Gut It Out Open benefiting the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.

Fix Your Slice, Take Your Range Game to the Course & a Hilarious David Feherty Story
Season 13, Episode 53
Show notes
Why can you stripe the ball on the driving range, then step onto the first tee and suddenly forget how to play golf? And could fixing that frustrating slice be as simple as changing your grip?
This week on Next on the Tee, two great friends of the show return with terrific stories, practical tips, and plenty of laughs.
PGA Professional Christian Sheehan joins me from his new home in Northeast Pennsylvania at Huntsville Golf Club in Dallas, Pennsylvania. Chris takes us inside this spectacular Rees Jones design and shares his passion for building relationships and creating what he calls "golf addicts." He also explains how to take your great range swing onto the course and shares a simple grip adjustment that can help eliminate that dreaded slice.
The Confidence Doctor, Dr. Bob Winters, returns with a hilarious story about the time he mistook David Feherty for Mark McNulty, both obviously golf legends, and a wonderful lesson in kindness and humility that followed.
Doc also tackles why pressure changes everything when we're playing golf. He shares how to get comfortable being uncomfortable, build confidence when every shot counts, and stop worrying about who's watching us on the first tee.
His biggest message? Give yourself permission to be human, stop putting so much pressure on yourself, and remember that golf is supposed to be fun!
Great stories, tips you can take straight to the course, and a little Vitamin G along the way.
Thanks for pressing play!

Your Slice Isn’t What You Think—and Neither Is Your Lost Distance
Season 13, Episode 52
Show notes
What if the reason you keep slicing the golf ball isn’t what you think it is? And what if the extra distance you’ve been searching for isn’t inside the latest $600 driver—but locked inside your body?
This week on Next on the Tee, PGA Professional Brian Klocek and TPI-certified golf fitness specialist Shaun Diachkoff help us uncover ways to play better golf without chasing another swing thought or buying another piece of equipment.
Brian is the Director of Golf at Totteridge Golf Course in Greensburg, PA, and he shares a simple range drill that can help chronic slicers quiet an overactive upper body, improve their sequencing, and start hitting straighter shots. We also talk about how colder temperatures affect distance, what to wear so you stay warm without restricting your swing, and what makes their Rees Jones-designed Totteridge Golf Course such a special public golf experience in Western Pennsylvania.
And yes—we finally discover the secret behind the Totteridge hot dog that Gus Frerotte and his sons voted the best at the turn in the region.
Then Shaun Diachkoff asks us to look at our golf swing from a completely different perspective.
Sometimes the swing flaw you’ve spent years trying to fix isn’t really a swing problem at all—your body may simply be unable to get into the position you’re asking of it.
Shaun explains how limitations in the hips, thoracic spine, and shoulders can rob us of rotation, speed, consistency, and distance. He walks us through his approach to identifying those restrictions, restoring mobility, building strength, and ultimately creating more speed.
Plus, we get practical advice for staying loose during cold-weather rounds and what you can start doing this offseason to prepare your body for better golf in 2027.
Better movement. Straighter shots. More speed. More distance. And no new driver required.

Coming Over the Top? Fighting the Pull Hooksies? Playing the Wrong Tees? Let’s Fix That.
Season 13, Episode 50
Show notes
If your golf game needs a little help heading into the fall, this episode of Next on the Tee is built for you.
We’re going to help you play your best golf of the season as we head into the Fall. We're putting the playing lessons right up front so you can hear them on the way to the range, replay them before your round, and have them fresh in your mind when you step onto the first tee.
Resident Director of Instruction Tom Patri starts us off with a fix for one of the most common swing problems in golf: coming over the top. TP introduces us to his “Over the Top Chop” and explains how it can also help those of us battling the dreaded pull hooksies. He also weighs in on the Presidents Cup and why he believes J.J. Spaun deserved a spot on the team.
Then PGA Master Professional John Hughes returns—and I’m excited to announce that John is joining Next on the Tee as a monthly regular.
John’s first lesson might save you strokes without changing your swing at all: check your ego in the parking lot. He explains how to determine which tees you should actually be playing, why moving forward can make golf more enjoyable, and how playing the proper yardage gives you the opportunity to hit reasonable irons into greens and—imagine this—make more birdies.
John also shares why you may want to hover the club at address, just like Jack Nicklaus did, and what that simple adjustment can do for your swing.
More tips. More fun. Better scores.
That’s the direction we’re taking on Next on the Tee—giving you lessons you can take straight to the course, followed by the stories and conversations with golf’s greats that you’ve come to expect.

Tell Me If You've Heard This One, a Super Bowl Champion, a Pro Bowl QB, & a PGA Pro Walk Into a Podcast…
Season 13, Episode 49
Show notes
This week on Next on the Tee, we're mixing golf with a little football—and discovering once again that the two games have more in common than you might think.
We start with my “long-lost cousin,” John Mascari, Director of Golf at Alpine Country Club and former member of the New Jersey PGA Section Board of Directors. John and I talk about something that often gets overlooked: being a great PGA Professional is really about being in the relationship business. We also get into the New Jersey Mid-Am, Alpine’s relationship with nearby Baltusrol, some terrific New Jersey courses you may not know, and why U.S. teams continue to struggle in international team competitions.
Then it's time to cross over to the gridiron with 2-time Super Bowl Champion Mark Collins. Mark is an avid golfer who shares some great stories about playing with Joe Montana and Marcus Allen during their Kansas City days, plus the putting lesson he recently received from PGA Tour legend Dave Stockton. We also talk Giants football, playing NFL games overseas, CTE, and the courses still on Mark's golf bucket list.
We round things out with former Pro Bowl quarterback Jim Everett, one of the smartest offensive football minds I've had the pleasure of talking with over the years. Jim breaks down the Steelers, their young quarterbacks, and the young QBs around the league who have caught his eye. He also takes us back to his own playing days to explain when the NFL game finally slowed down for him and what really happens during those Combine interviews.
And here's one you probably won't see coming, and I'm not sure how it's possible, but Jim owns all 762 football cards ever made of him.
Three great guests. Two sports. And a whole lot of great stories.
Thank you for pressing play.

Resident Director of Instruction Tom Patri leads things off as we debate the Player of the Year race between Wyndham Clark and Scottie Scheffler, along with whether professional athletes should ever be allowed to regain their amateur status. We also discuss how NIL has blurred the line between amateur and professional sports.

Brandt also reflects on his success at Muirfield Village, his two Champions Tour victories, and his fight to regain full status on that Tour.
Former Pro Bowl quarterback Gus Frerotte rounds out the show with stories about joining Green Oaks Country Club, his favorite Western Pennsylvania courses, and the best turn hot dogs in the area. Gus also shares the story behind his celebrity-tour hole-in-one, selects his ultimate Pittsburgh-area foursome, and offers his thoughts on the Steelers and why Terry Bradshaw might never have been given enough time to develop in today’s NFL.

Stop Playing the Holes That Haven’t Happened Yet: Master Golf’s Mental Game
Season 13, Episode 47
Show notes
Former PGA Tour pro David Canipe, The Confidence Doctor Dr. Bob Winters, and original Golf Channel creative force Michael J. Whelan join me for an episode filled with great stories, mental-game advice, and a trip through golf history.
We start with David Canipe, a three-year letterman at the University of Georgia who helped the Bulldogs win the 1972 SEC Championship before beginning a professional career that epitomized what it meant to be a grinder. David takes us back to the old Space Coast Tour, where he estimates he won 25 times, and shares what it took to make it through PGA Tour Q-School three different times.
We also hear about playing alongside Bill Kratzert at Georgia, the incredible field he faced at his first Q-School in 1976, and some of the biggest moments of his PGA Tour career—including becoming the early leader at the 1984 U.S. Open, finishing T4 at the 1988 Las Vegas Invitational, making the cut at Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament, and taking the 54-hole lead into Sunday at the 1989 Southern Open.
Then, The Confidence Doctor, Dr. Bob Winters, returns with a mental-game lesson every golfer needs to hear: stop playing holes that haven't happened yet.
We've all done it. Three holes to go and suddenly we're calculating what we need to shoot to break a milestone score, win the tournament, or finally beat our buddies. Dr. Bob explains why getting ahead of ourselves can derail a great round, how to stay present when the pressure builds, and even shares a simple rubber-band trick that can help bring your mind back to the shot in front of you.
Finally, Michael J. Whelan returns to take us inside his fascinating new book, The Fairways of Wisdom. Mike was the guy behind everything when The Golf Channel launched in the mid-1990s, creating its original programming and assembling the talent both in front of and behind the cameras. His remarkable television career also includes HBO, CBS, and NBC.
In The Fairways of Wisdom, Mike combines that lifetime of storytelling with his love of golf, playing 9 holes with 9 legends and exploring the lessons and wisdom they might share.
Three terrific guests. PGA Tour stories from a true grinder. A mental-game lesson you can use during your very next round. And a creative journey alongside some of golf's greatest legends.

This week, I’m joined by three outstanding guests bringing us great golf instruction, leadership insights, legendary stories, and a fascinating look at innovation in sports.
Resident Director of Instruction Tom Patri, a Golf Magazine Top 100 Alumni Instructor, is back to talk about the Player of the Year conversation—who belongs in it, who could sneak into the discussion, and what we can learn from Ryan Fox’s swing. TP also explains something that hurts golfers at every level: tension. We’ll talk about how tension destroys motion and what you can do to free up your swing and play better golf.
Then, Tom Wildenhaus, Director of Golf at Olde Florida Golf Club, PGA Master Professional, and member of the South Florida PGA Hall of Fame, joins me for a conversation that goes beyond the golf swing. Tom shares his perspective on leadership, including some important do’s and don’ts for creating the kind of culture and experience that keeps members and guests coming back.
We’ll also cross over into the football world with longtime friend Lee Hanson, Co-Founder of Guardian Caps. We have been longtime believers in Guardian Caps. Lee and Erin Hanson started the company back in 2011. We first met them on Thursday Night Tailgate (football show) back in 2012 and have been tooting their horn ever since. Lee takes us back to their early days, the journey to acceptance, and what's behind the innovation designed to help make the game safer—and there’s a great golf connection too. His company manufactures urethane covers for several golf ball brands, and Lee was also involved in helping Dick’s Sporting Goods bring the Maxfli brand back to life.

Is Your Mind Ruining Your Golf Game? How to Play With More Confidence
Season 13, Episode 44
Show notes
This week on Next on the Tee, we’re working on two areas that can make a huge difference in the game: what happens between our ears and how we develop the next generation of golfers.
Mindset expert Ricky Kalmon, author of the upcoming Leverage Your Mindset for Golfers, Breaking Mental Barriers and Elevating Your Game, shares ways to quiet negative thoughts, handle pressure, recover from bad shots, and stop letting that one dreaded hole beat us before we even get there. Ricky explains “AutoThoughts,” the importance of a strong mental routine, and why sometimes the most powerful thing we can tell ourselves is simply, “I got this.”
Then Lee-Anne Gilchrist, CEO of the Golf Performance Academy, joins me for an important conversation about developing junior golfers. Your Best Golf Shot Is Lying to You
Season 13, Episode 42
Show notes
Your best golf shot may be lying to you. ⛳
You hit that 7-iron 160 yards once—or maybe a few times—so when the GPS says 160, what club comes out of the bag? But what if your normal 7-iron goes 150–155? How about that 10-20 yard chip shot that's hard to dial in. Those are just a couple of topics two of the very best instructors help you with on this episode of Next on the Tee...
My gumba Rob Strano returns for an incredible 26th appearance. Rob and I get into why he grinds the heel of his wedges, plus he shares tips to hit better chips, how to play uneven lies, and why AimPoint gets a bad rap. We also talk Jordan Spieth, and the proposed changes coming to the PGA Tour in 2028.
Then PGA Master Professional John Hughes joins me. We talk about playing for the golfer we actually are instead of the golfer we hope shows up that day—and why better course management may save us more strokes than another swing change.
Two outstanding teachers, and better people. A ton of useful golf instruction. Plenty of laughs. And, of course, a healthy dose of Vitamin G.
