  4. CLAUDIA DZIENNY ON ZOMBUCHA! Bonus

    Season 5

    Show notes

I talk with director Claudia Dzienny about Zombucha!, her gleefully unhinged comedy, written by and starring Emma Leonard, about a Sydney couple whose personal rebrand as kombucha entrepreneurs sets off a zombie outbreak. We get into skewering the wellness-and-self-optimisation crowd (and why they’ll never realise it’s about them), the George Romero tradition of zombies as social commentary, and the “is it still making me laugh?” test that carries a gag from script to edit. She also talks about sharpening her comedic timing at Upright Citizens Brigade, how her architecture background shaped the film’s storyboards, low angles and one-take boardroom meltdown, and the comic gifts of Jackie van Beek’s face, an angry Santa dad’s push-up warm-up and an energy drink called Thirsty Virgin.

Zombucha! is in Australian cinemas from November 19.

Three hundred coyotes in waistcoats march through a mountain range; somebody moved every one of those legs by hand, one frame at a time, and then did it again.
