The Carbuncle Chronicle Issue 39: Chatting With Michael-Christopher Koji Fox & Toshio "Foxclon" Murouchi @ Otakon 2026
Episode 366
Show notes
Hello Adventurers! Right on the heels of the Berlin FanFest was Otakon, an anime con in Washington DC. They even had some awesome Final Fantasy XIV guests there, too! The men, the myths, the legends, Michael-Christopher Koji Fox (Localization Director at Square Enix) and Toshio “Foxclon” Murouchi (Head of Square Enix’s Community & Service Division and Global Community Producer for Final Fantasy XIV), to be exact. And somehow, we were fortunate enough to get to interview them!
But to really give our Adventurers as much Koji and Foxclon content as we could, we also talk about two of the panels they were on while at Otakon. The ones we cover are Adventures in Localization: Koji Fox’s Journey Across FINAL FANTASY XI, XIV, and XVI and Duty Finder: Otakon 2026 – A FINAL FANTASY XIV Community Panel. So this episode has plenty of bang for your gil!
The Spoiler Food is: Evercold Shaved Ice “Thinly shaved ice, generously heaped into an oversmall bowl and drizzled with sweet-yet-tangy rolanberry syrup. Why it never melts is a question best served cold.” The reason that this is the spoiler food will be come evident during the interview. That said, oddly enough despite the name of the food has “Evercold” in the name… This episode overall is actually pretty spoiler light? But you’ll find out why in the interview too! Funny how that works.
OSMnotes

OSMinterview! MC Frontalot @ MTAC Another World
Episode 360
Show notes
We’re bringing back yet another MTAC Another World OSMinterview! Today, we’ve got our interview we did for MC Frontalot! Here’s what MTAC had on their webpage about him:
MC Frontalot (née Damian Hess) is the original mastermind of Nerdcore Hip-Hop and still its Final Boss.
Front was born in San Francisco and grew up in Berkeley. He was tall and scrawny, had trouble breathing, and could not see well. A special teacher was called in to help him attain basic competence on the monkey bars, another to give him standardized tests meant for older children. Thusly, he was the most popular kid in his elementary school. Just kidding! He got pushed down a lot and called “nerd.” Did he maybe even deserve it? I mean, really – who strikes out at kickball?
He spent the next twenty years or so trying to get over it. And kind of succeeded! Flash forward to 1999: the dotcom bubble is maximally inflated; nerds everywhere imagine themselves to be popular and/or hip. Damian is getting overpaid to code web pages, which leaves him free in the evenings to play with audio software. A longtime idolizer of rappers, he has been committing his own esoteric hip-hop compositions to four-track tape since high school, revealing them to nobody. But, suddenly! Multi-track desktop studios, cheap pro-grade recording hardware, skyrocketing bandwidth, semi-anonymous web publishing: these factors converge on Damian’s rap hobby like a flock of winged monkeys. He posts an MC Frontalot web page, dubbing his output “Nerdcore Hip-Hop” because his audience is composed of several Star Wars figurines who live on his desk (and also random internet people who click on his MP3s by mistake).
Somehow, it is a quarter-century later. Nerdcore has metastasized into an internet phenomenon and underground touring powerhouse, with dozens of well established live acts and hundreds of home-studio rhymers self-identifying within the subgenre. MC Frontalot, called alternately the movement’s godfather or grandfather (thanks, kids), leads the charge, performing for thousands around the country and at prominent geek gatherings such as Comic-Con, DEF CON, the Penny Arcade Expo, Super MAGFest, and BlizzCon. He’s been featured in The New York Times, Spin, Wired, XXL, Newsweek, CNN, Blender, XLR8R, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, The London Daily Telegraph, NPR, G4TV, Esquire, Playboy, CMJ, The Guardian (UK), The Wall Street Journal, and scores of city papers nationally and internationally. He has released seven studio albums, Nerdcore Rising (Sept 2005), Secrets From The Future (Apr 2007), Final Boss (Nov 2008), Zero Day (Apr 2010), Solved (Aug 2011), Question Bedtime (Aug 2014), and Net Split, or the Fathomless Heartbreak of Online Itself (March 2019). The documentary feature, Nerdcore Rising: The Movie, which focuses on Front’s live band and exposes the the Nerdcore phenomenon in general, debuted at the South By Southwest Film Festival in 2008.
Front lives in Berkeley, CA, and still spends most of his time rapping into a computer.

The Great Final Fantasy Ranking!
Episode 356
Show notes
Hello Adventurers! Wait, is that how it goes for this? Does it even matter? Who knows! So this episode, theoretically a "bonus" episode, is actually a product of two years worth of work. In 2024, over the course of two different panels at MomoCon and KamiCon HAI (RIP), we had panels where we attempted to rank all the mainline Final Fantasies (plus two bonus games). As we had different people on each panel, we of course had two different rankings! What was a podcast to do? Well, all six of us got together to record One Final (Fantasy) Podcast to determine the final ranking. This is that episode!
PS You may notice that we have not indicated if this is an OSMcast! or a Carbuncle Chronicle episode. That's because it's both! Almost all of the OSMcast! side, and all of The Carbuncle Chronicle side are in this, AND it covers Final Fantasy XIV to boot, so it made sense to just call it an episode for both.
OSMnotes
Whoo boy! This was a real pain to edit! But Basil also got real extra with the audio and music for the episode this time, so we hope you enjoy the half a year he took at poking and prodding this thing into Listenable Audio™. Anyroad, have some Time Cues:

And for a decent bit longer than last time. Thankfully since then Discotek and Media OCD continue to do the lord’s work, and we have an amazing new Blu-ray release to talk about. The anime finally has a kick ass release, and more people need to know about it. Only took 20ish years to do it!

Episode 353
Show notes
