This episode originally aired on January 22, 2023 but was removed in 2025. Now it's back and better than ever with all the infringing music removed!

We talk about the first season of Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and answer a few 3rd year anniversary e-mails that we didn't get around to in the original anniversary episode. Thank you for listening! Please consider giving us five stars! It helps spread us around and we'd really appreciate it!

We're going to the other side of anime consumption this week with Mattie's bottom 30 anime of all time! Filled with what could only be considered crap-ssic anime, this is basically a handy guide of anime to avoid at least according to one host of this show! Again, this list is all in good fun so if your favorite show is on this list then it's not an attack on you. Probably. Let us know your least favorite anime of all time in the comments below or join our Discord and talk with us! We'd love to hear from you.

Feel free to give us five stars on whatever platform you're listening to this on so people know we're not the worst! Thank you for listening!

Skinamarink! It's more than just a magic spell to carve off the skin of your enemies! It's also an experimental 2022 horror film written and directed by Kyle Edward Ball which Audrey and our featured guest Earthworm review and discuss this week! While Mattie soaks up the sun, the gang here bask in the fun of childhood horror and, quite unfortunately, knives. It's not anime but these things are known to happen from time to time.

We're rotoscoping ourselves on our marks in this episode as we discuss the movie 100 Meters (Hyakuemu)! I was going to put more running puns and references but y'all know what this is. Dash to wherever you can and give us five stars. That'd be cool!

I hope you're jazzed about jazz because in this episode we discussing 2023's Blue Giant! Expect talks about how neat the saxophone is so if you're just like, I don't know, really not a fan of the woodwind section of your high school band then maybe you shouldn't listen to this episode. Did you know that the saxophone was invented by a man named Adolphe Sax? Sounds super fake but is actually super true!

We're going to magic school again (gosh we just keep flunking magic school) in this episode with a discussion and review of Witch Hat Atelier! We're talking wholesome helpings of witchy wonders and more including topical topics like how hot yet adorable Qifrey is. There's also like twenty seconds of discussion on the history of old drive in Alabama so tune in if you're like a historian or something. I'm not telling you where it is though so you have to listen to the whole episode. Historians don't get a free ride on this podcast. Now economists though...

The name of the episode is the summary. It's late and I took too long to finish editing this episode and I'm sleepy. Audrey really likes this show. Give us five stars on whatever podcast platform you're listening to this on. Or don't. I respect your agency and free will. See ya two weeks from now.

Sonic the Hedgehog! He's 35 years old now so you know his knee joints just aren't going to be what they used to be but we still love him. We love him so much that we wanted to talk a little bit about him and his first foray into anime with the 1996 OVA named Sonic the Hedgehog! We review and discuss all the fun of the short but sweet two episode OVA as well as our long history with the blue blur from recording "Live and Learn" on our old CRTs to playing Sonic 3 at our best friend from elementary school's house. Listen in and share your Sonic stories in the comments below or on our social media! We'd love to hear from you!

This episode was originally recorded in April 2025 for the Anime Brothers Podcast. Any misinformed statements in this episode based off future events is not due to willful stupidity and/or blatant ignorance. For once.

We talk about what it would be like to have 100 girlfriends in an episode that could only be described as content! It's like waifu wars on a world war scale. Wait, there's only like 11 girlfriends in these first two seasons? That seems kind of like some false marketing.

Firstly, Audrey's audio is subpar because of technical issues. Secondly, we have a guest this week so everyone act on your best behavior. Lastly, how are your grades looking like? You're grounded if you didn't get at least all B's. I'm a strict parent, I think.

We cap off Anno Live Action Whatever I Don't Know Month with Shin Kamen Rider! Is it good? We talk about that! Is it bad? We also talk about that! What is a bug? That is also a subject we break down with our good friend who came out of retirement, Earthworm! Listen now! If you want! I'm not forcing you.

Big shiny dudes fighting for humanity! It's a tale as old as time and it's being retold again this week with our review and discussion on Shin Ultraman! We're exploring the live action films of Hideaki Anno this month so obviously here's your Shin Ultraman episode. Anno didn't have a seat in the director's chair for this one but he still wrote and produced this! Does it show? We talk some of that and more!

https://linktr.ee/otakumelancholypodcast

Well, I mean, we're not called ANIME MELANCHOLY so I guess we can be kaiju or tokusatsu otaku or whatever. We're discussing the live action works of acclaimed (and deadline missing) director, Hideaki Anno! While known and generally beloved for the Evangelion series, Anno also directed a trio of films that reimagined three of Japan's most beloved properties and this week we're covering SHIN GODZILLA! It's hot kaiju on human action as we talk politics in big monster movies, the moisture in the wind in the southeastern United State, and even more topics that will be sure to be a distraction while you're at work! Ganbatte!

Love! It's in the air! Get a better air filter to prevent love from getting into your lungs, people! We didn't do that in this episode because we absolutely breathed in deep the fumes of romance with a discussion on You and I Are Polar Opposites! We're feeling more FEELINGS than ever before this week! Join in to hear slander on Reddit, slander on isekai protagonists, and slander against our dads so overall a pretty solid episode. In a winter season full of absolute hype machine anime, Journal with Witch was a show that tackled the complicated dynamics of people especially as they live in the wake of grief. That show is obviously going to be Journal with Witch since that's the name of this episode and all but I don't know how adept some of you are at reading. I've been using these show notes as my own personal memo pad for disrupting thoughts and no one has ever said anything during the first four years of OtaMel so why should I face consequences now? Also Makio is best girl I would absolutely let her leave me on read. Ganbatte!

We're talking all about some vampire night this episode (and not like the anime Vampire Knight or anything, I'm so funny) as we discuss the first season of Call of the Night! It's all about vibes, relationship turmoil, and the council of hot vampire MILFs in your area! You don't even have to stay up late to watch this episode! Or maybe you do. It's like 8pm CST when I'm uploading it. 8pm is pretty late isn't it, fellow kids?

We continue our dive into the Umamusume franchise with a review and discussion of seasons two and three of Umamusume Pretty Derby in this episode! They're big improvements over the lackluster first season but which horse anime should you bet on? We stumble out the gate to answer that question and more all in this week's episode!

Music in this episode:

(Intro)

"koishii" - Deoxys Beat

(Interlude)

"Rising Star" - Tatami

(Closing)

"Where's My Jetpack?" - Computer Music All-Stars

Himmel was right. Doing an emotional goodbye really is embarrassing if you do meet again.

We're back and we're here more than ever (but not better by any means) to yell at you about anime and anime accessories like it's 2020 all over again. In this episode, we discuss how the last two years have been treating us as well as indulge our horse girl hyper fixation with a review and discussion of the first season of Umamusume Pretty Derby! Hang out with us once again! We love you and it's good to be back. Ganbatte!
