#117 - A Funeral for Six Chairs: How to Find Your Values
Season 7, Episode 117
Show notes
Six mint-green leather chairs shouldn’t be able to break your heart, and yet there I am, parked next to a skip, feeling like I’m holding a tiny funeral. That moment becomes the doorway into something much bigger: the way our values show up through emotion, and how boundaries often reveal themselves only when they get crossed. If you’ve ever felt “too sensitive” about something small, this chapter offers a kinder explanation and a practical way to learn from it.
From that story, we zoom out into time and values for creative business owners. I talk through why you can’t truly “manage your time” until you know what matters to you, because family rhythms, friendships, hobbies, self-care, therapy, and genuine rest aren’t extras, they’re values with time attached. We also name the common trap where organising and maintaining the business takes over the time you meant to spend making the work, and how values-based planning helps prevent overwhelm, resentment, and burnout.
We get concrete with tools that actually work: Parkinson’s Law, the difference between working in your business and working on it, and the daily question that cuts through busywork: what is the one thing that will bring my business forward today? I share how I structure limited work time, including morning pages, a bullet journal, and a “rebellious brain” workaround that supports ADHD tendencies without losing momentum. You’ll also get the weekly exercise, the sting test, plus a helpful pointer to Brené Brown’s values list so you can put clearer words to what you already feel.
If this resonates, subscribe, share it with a fellow creative, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What’s a recent “sting” that might be pointing to one of your values?

#116 - The Invisible Start: Stop Comparing Your Beginning to Their Middle
Season 7, Episode 116
Show notes
I’m back recording after a break, and I’m talking honestly about why starting again can feel so hard. I share what helps me begin when ADHD, overwhelm, and perfectionism make the first step feel heavier than the work.
• struggling to restart after a hiatus and noticing the need for a specific kind of energy
• recognising masking and “borrowing” other people’s vibe in communication
• working with limited time blocks and why start-stop weeks drain momentum
• using movement, morning creativity, and a supportive environment to settle the brain
• turning a meaty course into a slimmer e-book while keeping my voice
• why AI outputs can feel generic and how I use it only for non-creative organising
• committing to one episode every two weeks to match boundaries and capacity
• understanding the invisible start and why comparison on social media is misleading
• breaking any project into tiny steps to create dopamine and motion
• reducing overwhelm by picking priorities and using the Bullet Journal method as a filter
So, just send me an email, react to the video, react to the podcast episode, wherever you're listening to it. That would be great
So now my call to action to you is to, for you to figure out what your next step is. What are you starting and what is your first small step that you can take? And I would be really happy to, to hear what it is. Let me know☆ other ways to SUPPORT THE SHOW ☆

#115 - Stop Treating Your Website Like Your Magnum Opus
Season 6, Episode 115
Show notes
We talk about how high standards and perfectionism can freeze momentum, especially when you are building something big like a new website. We share a practical way to choose a deadline, define a baseline, and ship a first version that helps people find you and pay you.
• why big ideas turn into start stop progress
• how Parkinson’s law makes long deadlines drag
• choosing a baseline so version one can go live
• simple website essentials for artists, makers and shop owners
• taking tiny daily steps to build momentum
• when paying for better tools or help saves time

#113 - The honest truth about what's waiting on the other side of that free call button
Season 6, Episode 113
Show notes
You’ve seen the button. “Book a free discovery call.” And something about it feels a little prickly — like clicking it means you’re walking into a lion’s den with no way out. I used to feel exactly the same way. Now I’m on the other side of it, and I want to invite you in properly.
In this short episode I walk through what a discovery call actually is — and what it isn’t. It’s not a sales pitch. It’s not a test you can fail. It’s not a free coaching session. And you won’t leave owing me anything.
What it is: a 30-minute real conversation. We figure out where you are, what might help, and whether we’re a match. It goes both ways — I’m figuring out if I can help you, and you’re figuring out if I’m the right person to do that.
I also talk about the question I always ask: are you in building mode or survival mode? And I explain the difference between coaching and therapy — including why there’s still space for real emotions in coaching, just not trauma work.
If you’re curious, that’s already enough reason to book. You don’t need a plan. You don’t need to prepare. Just show up.

#111 - Building From the Roots Up: PDA, Curiosity, and Running a Business Your Way
Season 7, Episode 111
Show notes
I'm getting personal in this episode of Pattern Shift — recorded from my brand new praktijk in Rotterdam. I trace why I bootstrapped from 300 euros, refused investors, never built a conventional team, and kept rebuilding the brand. I name Pathological Demand Avoidance directly and connect it to my lifelong distrust of the ready-made — in business, fashion, and a painting I found on the side of the road last week. From sour puss to happy kitty: on curiosity as the antidote to cynicism, and three questions to find out where you're running on borrowed structure.

#108 - Branding Isn’t A Logo; It’s How People Decide To Choose You
Season 6, Episode 108
Show notes
Am I my brand? And does branding even matter when I’m a tiny, one-person creative business?
In this episode, I untangle the belief that branding is mostly fonts, logos, and pretty photos, and I lean on Brand the Change to explore branding as direction – a compass for how you show up, what you say yes to, and how people experience your work.
I share examples from the knitting world, some brands that randomply popped up in my head and that's saying much in itself (think Stephen West, Rowan, Hedgehog Fibres), talk about my own journey from yarn shop to coaching, and get honest about boundaries, privacy, and starting a YouTube channel without burning myself out.
I close with journaling questions to help you see where your branding already shines, and how you can use it as a tool instead of a costume.

#107 - Planning Doesn’t Kill Creativity — It Protects It
Season 6, Episode 107
Show notes
- How I separate ideas from tasks, plan by energy, and keep marketing simple -
Planning doesn’t have to kill creativity. In this episode, I share how I plan with a neurodivergent, creative brain—lightly. Using examples from some of my clients, I separate ideas from tasks, choose one daily priority, and use soft time blocks guided by energy instead of the clock. I talk about how Bullet Journaling® supports me (without needing pretty pages), how I turned my phone into a tool, and why monthly/weekly/daily funnels keep my daily list truly doable. If you’ve tried rigid systems and rebelled, this is for you. Planning can protect your freedom, help you make more, and keep your marketing consistent—without heroic last-minute sprints.

#106 - Why Smart, Creative People Avoid Coaching — and Why They Shouldn’t
Season 6, Episode 106
Show notes
I’ve noticed that many smart, creative people avoid coaching because they think it’s only for people who are lost, unsure or corporate CEO's. In this episode of Pattern Shift, I challenge that idea. I share my own stories as both a coach and a client, from working with ADHD and lifestyle coaches on my weightloss journey to helping my clients rediscover joy in their creative work.
With humor, honesty, and a healthy dose of Dutch pragmatism, I explain how coaching differs from consulting, mentoring, and therapy—and why it’s such a powerful way to find clarity when you’re ready to grow. I also talk about how our cultural tendency to “doe maar normaal” can make asking for support feel uncomfortable, even when it’s exactly what we need.
If you’ve ever thought coaching wasn’t “for you,” this episode might shift your perspective.

Season 5, Episode 99
Show notes
SUMMARY
In this episode, we dive into the final step of the Ja, Wol framework—Launch. Sharing your work with the world can feel scary, vulnerable, and overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Launching isn’t about hype or hustle; it’s about connection and care. I talk about why launching feels so hard (especially for neurodivergent brains), how to rethink launching as a slow rhythm instead of a one-time event, and ways to share your work more gently and joyfully. If you’ve been holding back on putting your work into the world, this episode is your invitation to rethink how launching can feel.

You know me as a guide, mentor and teacher, but I've also set off on a new adventure, coaching. Coaching gets a bad rep sometimes, but when it's done right, it can be really transformational. As part of my coaching education, I'll soon need to do real coaching sessions. And it could be a really great opportunity for you to experience it at no or low cost. If you've ever been curious about working with me in this way, now's the time. Just send me an email: info@ja-wol.com
This episode was sponsored by Ja, Wol. I promote my own services and products in my podcast rather than working with sponsors. I will share the odd-discount for things I fully support and use.
