  1. Inspiring Young Advocates - A Dog Named 647

    Show notes

Karen and Jean chat with veterinarian, author, and animal welfare advocate Dr. Nancy Kay about her newest book, A Dog Named 647, a middle-grade novel that introduces young readers to the realities of puppy mills.

Dr. Kay’s advocacy against puppy mills grew directly out of her work as a veterinarian, where she saw firsthand the physical and emotional harm suffered by dogs from commercial breeding operations — as well as the impact on families who unknowingly purchased unhealthy or fearful puppies. Those experiences eventually inspired her to bring the issue to younger readers through A Dog Named 647.

The conversation explores why education is so important to ending puppy mills, why middle school readers are such an important audience, and how young people can become effective advocates for animals.

One important takeaway: don’t buy a pet from a pet store or online without meeting the parents and seeing where and how the animals are being raised.

Dr. Nancy Kay is also the author of:

    • Speaking for Spot: Be the Advocate Your Dog Needs to Live a Happy, Healthy, Longer Life

    • Your Dog’s Best Health: A Dozen Reasonable Things to Expect From Your Vet

    • A Dog Named 647

  2. What is Possible: An Animal Welfare Love Story

    Show notes

It’s time to be inspired by the story of a veterinary hospital in Boston, Massachusetts that is so, so, so much more! Jean’s conversation with MSPCA-Angell spokeswoman Corinne Bourgoin outlines what is possible when leading animal welfare services and veterinary care operate under one legendary roof. This Massachusetts institution — often referred to as the “Mayo Clinic for animals” — has been around since 1868 and provides wraparound services for pets and the people who love them.

You’ll be amazed by what you hear about how deep the impact on a community can be when the mindset around animal welfare and veterinary care shift away from judgement and toward common sense and compassion. Also: The numbers work. MSPCA-Angell receives no public funding; their extensive nonprofit operations run on a combination of smart management of hospital revenues and philanthropy that has been inspired for generations by institutional excellence and love. 3. PawsGo Recall: Listener Favorites Worth Fetching, How a Dog Named Friday Inspired a Pawfectly Delicious Idea

    Show notes

We love dog-trepreneurs — especially smart women with big ideas that do good!

This is one of our favorite PawsGo Pawdcast episodes and one of the very first we recorded. Karen and Jean chat with Anne Tuccillo, founder of Pawfectly Delicious Dog Treats.

As Anne was preparing to retire from federal service, she was also thinking about what the future would look like for her adult son, Bryan, who was aging out of special education services and facing limited employment opportunities.

Then their dog, Friday, helped lead them to the pawfect solution.

Together, Anne and Bryan — with a little inspiration from Friday — founded Pawfectly Delicious in 2017 in Alexandria, Virginia. Their treats are tasty, but the mission is even better. Pawfectly Delicious is a nonprofit that employs people with developmental and physical disabilities, providing meaningful work while celebrating each person’s unique gifts, talents and abilities.

It’s a team-focused business where employees and volunteers work together to produce dog treats, creating opportunities for people to succeed while building confidence, purpose and connection to their community.

It’s a wonderful story about dogs, family, entrepreneurship and doing good — and absolutely worth another listen.

  13. Dog Parkour – Endless Opportunities for Your Dog to Jump On and Over Things!

    Show notes

Dog parkour is the hottest dog activity because ANY dog can do it ANYWHERE. And unlike other dog sports or activities, there is no one to compete against. Dog parkour is a combination of human parkour (google it) and canine agility. In this episode of the pawdcast, Karen and Jean chat with Abigail Curtis, the co-founder of the International Dog Parkour Association -- https://www.dogparkour.org/

Dog parkour combines elements of human parkour and dog agility to create a fun and accessible activity for dogs and humans. For dogs, they get to experience the world through jumping, climbing, balancing on, crawling over and under, and going through things they see every day – like a park bench. That’s the fun of dog parkour can be done anywhere and is limited only by the owner’s imagination. According to Abigail, the best thing about dog parkour -- it not only exercises a dog’s mind and body, it helps build confidence. It can be very a low impact but a challenging activity for any dog.

The AKC likes dog parkour so much that it’s a category on its FIT DOG Title -- https://www.akc.org/sports/akc-family-dog-program/akc-fit-dog/

  18. Dogs Enrich Our Lives, Let’s Enrich Theirs

    Show notes

In this episode of the pawdcast, Karen and Jean chat with Stefanie Strackbein who specializes in canine enrichment. Enrichment isn’t formal obedience or even organized sports. Enrichment refers to an easy activity or game to help dogs reduce stress, exercise their brains, and have a sense of control over their environment. Examples of these games include tossing kibble on the lawn and inviting your dog to “find it” or folding up kibble or a high value treat in a towel and letting your dog figure out how to unfold the towel to find the treat – SUPER SIMPLE things, but FUN and enriching for your dog!

Stefanie contends that if more dog owners engaged in daily enrichment activities with their dogs, we’d see fewer behavioral issues and fewer dogs in shelters. Stefanie also believes that simple enrichment exercises that can be done in the home, in the yard or on a walk, will help dogs AND owners be happier!

Stefanie is the founder and owner of the What Dogs Want Academy in Phoenix, AZ https://wdwacademy.dog/ You can follow her daily enrichment suggestions on Instagram @whatdogswant. She also presented a webinar for Your Dog’s Friend, a not for profit in Rockville, Maryland that supports positive training and programs for dogs and their owners – it’s a tremendous resource https://yourdogsfriend.org/ Stefanie’s webinar can be found here --https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWjdCWm8pXk

  20. Dog Parks, Paws UP? Or Paws DOWN?

    Show notes

Dog Parks. If you live in an urban area they are often a lifeline for owners eager to let their dogs run, play, and burn off a little steam. But dog parks also spark vitriol from owners, especially those who have had a dog injured (or attacked) while visiting one.

Not surprising, a successful dog park experience depends as much on the human as it does the dog. And keep in mind, dog parks aren’t a fit for every dog.

In this episode of the pawdcast, Karen’s friend Elizabeth joins as a co-host, while Jean is traveling. Elizabeth is a resident of Washington, DC and has learned to navigate her local dog park with her Aussie mix Roxie. Together, Karen and Elizabeth chat with Sandy Modell about the dos and don’ts of dog parks. A favorite guest on the pawdcast, Sandy is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) Board of Directors and founder of Wholistic Hound Academy in Alexandria Virginia. APDT has great resources for owners, including this one on dog parks https://apdt.com/resource-center/dog-parks-good-bad-ugly/
