  1. October 2026: Biotech & Pharma NEWS Roundup

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to your essential overview of the global biotech and pharmaceutical landscape for October 2026!

This month was defined by a wave of oncology approvals, a head-to-head data drop that reshuffled the GLP-1 race, and M&A activity that shows Big Pharma is quietly pivoting away from oncology toward rare disease, pain, and RNA therapeutics. The FDA approved dostarlimab in locally advanced rectal cancer, tucatinib in HER2-positive breast cancer, and talazoparib plus enzalutamide in metastatic prostate cancer — three meaningful wins for patients in a single month. Lilly’s retatrutide beat Ozempic head-to-head with 20.9% weight loss in diabetic patients, cementing its status as the next major GLP-1 contender. On the deal front, Shionogi paid $2 billion for IntraBio in rare neurodegeneration, Viatris acquired Pacira BioSciences for $1.65 billion in non-opioid pain, and Merck KGaA bought Silence Therapeutics at a 130% premium — six deals totaling over $7 billion for the month. VC finished strong with Formation Bio raising $600 million to buy drug candidates and Dren Bio closing $350 million, part of over $1.4 billion in rounds in the final week alone. And HHS greenlighted six experimental peptides over the open objections of FDA career scientists — a regulatory move that signals growing tension between evidence standards and the current policy posture. The bigger story: capital is flowing, but it’s getting selective — and the therapeutic areas winning M&A attention this month tell you exactly where the smart money thinks the next decade of returns will come from.

  2. Episode 79: Endeavor Health

    Season 1, Episode 79

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Petri Dish Perspectives, we explore Endeavor Health, the Chicago-area hospital system most Illinoisans have driven past but couldn’t name. Born from Evanston Hospital in 1891, grown into NorthShore University HealthSystem, expanded through a 2022 merger with Edward-Elmhurst Health, and rebranded as Endeavor Health in December 2023, this is a system that has been quietly becoming one of the largest in the state.

We break down Endeavor’s origins, its nine-hospital suburban footprint, the NorthShore Research Institute, and the financial reality of running a $6.4 billion system at near-zero operating margin and why that made what happened next almost inevitable.

On October 14th, 2026, Endeavor and Rush University System for Health announced a proposed merger that would create a $10 billion combined system with 12 hospitals, 400+ care sites, 46,000 employees and clinicians, and over 2 million patients a year. We get into the deal mechanics, the leadership shake-up, the $1 billion endowment investment, and what nurses, patients, and healthcare economists are already pushing back on.

This is a story about scale, survival, and what happens when a fragmented market finally stops pretending consolidation isn’t coming.

  3. Episode 78: Dr. Kristin Gleitsman on Using AI to Make Better Drug Development Decisions

    Season 1, Episode 78

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

After years of building discovery engines inside diagnostics, Kristin Gleitsman has become one of the more skeptical voices in AI and biology. A Caltech chemistry PhD, Kristin built Veracyte’s Discovery Research function from the ground up and helped shape the strategy behind its acquisition of C2i Genomics. Now, as Chief Science Officer of Eigen Bio, the focus is on a harder question than building bigger models: what has an AI model actually earned the right to claim?

In this episode, Kristin unpacks why more data layers don’t automatically mean more biological truth, how better mechanistic evidence could change drug development decisions, and what it takes to hold AI-bio claims, including your own company’s, to a higher standard. Kristin also shares lessons from the weekly AI∩Bio newsletter on separating real progress from hype.

  4. Episode 77: Revolution Medicines

    Season 1, Episode 77

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Petri Dish Perspectives, we explore Revolution Medicines, the precision oncology company that spent over a decade trying to drug one of cancer’s most notorious targets: RAS. With mutations present in roughly 30% of all new cancer diagnoses, including pancreatic, lung, and colorectal cancers, RAS has long been considered undruggable. Revolution bet their entire company on proving that wrong.

We break down the science behind their tricomplex inhibitor platform, the three lead drugs in their pipeline, daraxonrasib, elironrasib, and zoldonrasib, and the landmark Phase 3 RASolute 302 results that showed unprecedented overall survival in metastatic pancreatic cancer, earned a Plenary presentation at ASCO 2026, and triggered an FDA NDA review.

But this is also a story about the pressure of building an ambitious company with no revenue, nearly $1 billion in annual R&D spend, and a failed $30 billion acquisition attempt with Merck that sent the stock crashing 26% in a single day. Revolution walked away from the deal. The question now is whether that confidence was prescient or premature.

  6. September 2026: Biotech & Pharma NEWS Roundup

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to your essential overview of the global biotech and pharmaceutical landscape for September 2026!

This month was defined by blockbuster dealmaking, historic FDA approvals, and a growing recognition that pharmaceutical innovation is shifting east. AstraZeneca made a $2 billion strategic bet on Summit Therapeutics and its ivonescimab program, Novo Nordisk paid up to $2.6 billion for a once-weekly oral GLP-1 from China's Hengrui, and Eli Lilly continued its relentless dealmaking streak with a $3.25 billion InnoCare partnership. On the regulatory front, the FDA approved the first-ever treatment for Sanfilippo syndrome, a first-in-class Parkinson's drug, the world's first radioligand equivalent, and a new once-weekly insulin, a remarkable month for patients with rare and chronic diseases. ADARx raised $446 million in one of biotech's largest IPOs of the year, and Electra Therapeutics upsized its own raise to $350 million, signaling that the IPO window remains open for the right science. Meanwhile, Novo's total workforce cuts reached 13,000 and BMS continued trimming headcount, a reminder that even the industry's biggest players are restructuring for what comes next. The bigger story is unmistakable: China is no longer just manufacturing drugs for the West, it is discovering them, and the deals signed this month prove that Big Pharma has fully accepted that reality.

  9. Episode 73: Anew Labs

    Season 1, Episode 73

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Petri Dish Perspectives, we explore Anew Labs, the AI drug discovery company that emerged from one of the most unexpected places in biotech: ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. Fresh off a $290 million raise at a $1.5 billion valuation, Anew is betting that artificial intelligence can fundamentally change how we discover medicines, not by making existing drug development slightly faster, but by rethinking the entire discovery process from the ground up.

We'll break down why ByteDance got into drug discovery in the first place, how Anew's AI platforms work across protein structure prediction, molecular design, and antibody optimization, and what makes its first-in-class small molecule IL-17 program one of the most scientifically ambitious bets in the company's pipeline. We'll also explore the broader competitive landscape, from Anthropic's $400 million acquisition of Coefficient Bio to NVIDIA and Eli Lilly's $1 billion co-innovation lab and what it means that Big Tech is no longer just building tools for pharma, but trying to become the drug company itself.

But the biggest question hanging over all of it remains unanswered: can AI actually discover drugs? Not molecules that look promising on a computer. A medicine that works in humans, survives clinical development, gets approved, and changes patient outcomes. We'll dig into why the proof hasn't arrived yet and why Anew is one of the most important tests of that question in the world right now.

Because the next breakthrough in medicine may not come from a traditional pharmaceutical company. It may come from an algorithm trained on biology and a team willing to bet everything that the computer got it right.

  11. Episode 71: Fate of Pharma M&A

    Season 1, Episode 71

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Petri Dish Perspectives, we take a step back from individual companies to examine one of the most powerful forces shaping the pharmaceutical industry: M&A, licensing, and the global competition for innovation.

We explore how today's pharmaceutical giants were built through decades of consolidation, from Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, and Novartis to some of the industry's biggest modern transactions and why dealmaking has increasingly become essential for companies facing massive patent cliffs. But modern pharma is changing. Instead of relying solely on internal R&D or pursuing enormous megamergers, companies are increasingly acquiring targeted biotechs, licensing individual assets, and looking outside traditional innovation hubs for their next blockbuster.

We'll also dive into one of the biggest shifts happening in biotech today: the rise of China and Asia as sources of innovative drug development. Western pharmaceutical companies are increasingly licensing molecules and technologies developed outside the U.S. and Europe, even as governments push for supply-chain independence and greater scrutiny of strategic relationships with China. What happens when the pharmaceutical industry is becoming more global while geopolitics is becoming less global?

From the biggest deals in pharmaceutical history to the future of cross-border biotech partnerships, this episode asks a bigger question: Has Big Pharma become too dependent on buying innovation rather than building it? And if the best science can increasingly come from anywhere in the world, who will ultimately control the future of medicine?

Because pharmaceutical M&A isn't just about buying companies. It's about deciding who gets to own the future of medicine.

  12. August 2026: Biotech & Pharma NEWS Roundup

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to your essential overview of the global biotech and pharmaceutical landscape for August 2026!

This month was defined by major dealmaking, a resurgence in biotech financing, and growing questions about where the global biotech industry is headed. Roche made a $2.5 billion bet on Hanmi, McKesson acquired Precision Medicine Group for $2.25 billion, and the investors behind Metsera quickly returned with Sentivera and a licensing deal worth up to $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, companies including Apnimed, Attovia, and Braveheart kept the IPO market active, suggesting that investor appetite for biotech may be continuing to recover. On the regulatory front, a series of FDA approvals expanded treatment options across HIV, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and rare disorders, while three reported deaths in Chinese gene therapy trials sparked renewed debate in Washington about clinical-trial oversight and the FDA's reliance on international data. The bigger story is clear: biotech is becoming increasingly global, capital-intensive, and interconnected, where success depends not only on great science, but also on manufacturing, financing, regulation, and strategic partnerships.

    Season 1, Episode 70

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Petri Dish Perspectives, we explore Cellares, the biotech company trying to solve one of the biggest and least discussed challenges in cell therapy: how do you manufacture these complex, personalized medicines at commercial scale? From CAR-T to gene-edited cell therapies, the science may be advancing rapidly, but manufacturing remains labor-intensive, expensive, and difficult to scale. Cellares believes the answer is automation.

We’ll break down the origins of Cellares, the engineering philosophy behind its Cell Shuttle platform, and how the company is attempting to turn cell therapy manufacturing into something closer to an automated pharmaceutical factory. We’ll also explore its partnerships with companies including Bristol Myers Squibb and Cabaletta Bio, the massive investment behind its Smart Factory network, and why pharmaceutical companies have become increasingly interested in automating cell therapy production.

But there’s a major twist: Bristol Myers Squibb recently terminated its partnership with Cellares, raising questions about whether the Cell Shuttle is truly ready for commercial-scale manufacturing. We’ll unpack what happened, why manufacturing a clinical-stage therapy isn't necessarily the same as manufacturing a commercial product, and what this could mean for Cellares and the broader future of automated cell therapy.

Because the next breakthrough in cell therapy may not be another drug, it may be the factory that finally makes these living medicines scalable.

  17. July 2026: Biotech & Pharma NEWS Roundup

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to your essential overview of the global biotech and pharmaceutical landscape for June 2026!

This month was dominated by AI cementing itself as a core part of drug discovery, with partnerships spanning Anthropic, NVIDIA, Insilico Medicine, and major pharmaceutical companies. At the same time, billion-dollar licensing deals and acquisitions showed that large pharma is aggressively buying innovation rather than building everything internally, particularly in obesity, oncology, radiopharmaceuticals, and gene editing. Regulatory headlines—from the FTC's lawsuit against Hims & Hers to renewed debates around animal testing—reminded us that policy is evolving just as quickly as the science. And with companies like Apnimed and Scribe Therapeutics successfully entering the public markets, investor confidence appears to be returning to biotech. The takeaway is clear: the future of healthcare will be shaped by the convergence of biology, artificial intelligence, precision medicine, and strategic dealmaking—and this month may be remembered as another major step toward that future.

In this episode of Petri Dish Perspectives, we explore the story of Conception Bio, one of the most ambitious biotechnology companies working at the intersection of stem cell biology, reproductive medicine, and regenerative science. Their mission? To make eggs from ordinary cells through in vitro gametogenesis (IVG), a breakthrough that could fundamentally change how we think about infertility, fertility preservation, and human reproduction.

We'll dive into the science behind IVG, the pioneering research that made the field possible, the founders' vision, and why investors believe reproductive biology could become one of biotech's next major frontiers. We'll also discuss the enormous technical hurdles, ethical questions, and potential applications for cancer survivors, age-related infertility, LGBTQ+ family building, and beyond.

Because the next revolution in medicine may not be about curing disease, it may be about creating life's very first cell.
