  1. Tuscany & Chianti: Fly-Drive or Rail-and-Bus — Worth It?

    Show notes

Tuscany is sold to you with a hire car in the middle of it. We read the actual bus timetables, the published rail tariff and the hire-car fee schedules — and the answer splits four ways.

    🌍 WHAT THIS EPISODE IS

A logistics-first audit of Tuscany and Chianti for one week on the ground, built from the regional bus operator's own timetable files, the regional rail tariff in force from 1 August 2026, eleven municipal websites and four governments' travel advice. Florence, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo, San Gimignano, Poggibonsi, Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Val d'Orcia and the Chianti Classico villages — Greve, Panzano, Radda, Castellina, Gaiole.

    💰 WHAT IT COSTS

Four travellers, seven nights, per person — movement, entry and overnight tax, before the bed and before the flight: about $365 solo by rail and bus, about $235 each for a fly-drive couple, about $150 each for a family of four, about $620 for a luxury week. The family of four is the cheapest person in the episode. And the figure nobody publishes at all: what a hire car costs for a week.

    🎯 THE CENTRAL QUESTION

Is a rail-and-bus Tuscany possible, or a fantasy? It holds for the five railway towns, and for San Gimignano including Sundays. It holds Monday to Friday for Greve and Panzano. It fails completely for Radda, Castellina and Gaiole — where the bus line named after two of those villages stops at neither, and every published timetable is a school-term document with no Sunday service.

✅ WHAT WE COULD NOT VERIFY, AND SAY SO

No published car-hire rate for seven days from any supplier's own site. No citable airfare. No route tolls — the motorway company's own calculator is gone. No confirmation that the Florence–Siena link road is toll-free. No tourist-tax page on Florence's own website. No tourist-tax rates at all for Radda, Castellina, Montepulciano or Pienza. No official Florence pickpocketing figure, across four routes. No Chianti Classico harvest dates from the consortium. No Siena climate normals from any primary source. No Accademia hours or prices — its certificate fails. No reputable publication calling anything in Tuscany a tourist trap.

    🗺️ TIME-SENSITIVE

Siena Cathedral's marble floor is uncovered until 15 November 2026. Giotto's Bell Tower entered a five-year restoration on 1 October 2026 and the climb's status is unconfirmed — check on the day. The Uffizi's €16 ticket for entry from 4pm began 1 January 2026. Florence extended its short-let ban to nine more zones in June 2026. Bus and rail tariffs across the region both changed on 1 August 2026.

  2. Lake District: Car-Free or Car-Trapped — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 The Lake District National Park Authority's own statutory Local Plan says the park holds "in the region of 7,300 public car parking spaces" plus about 8,000 on-street — and that a peak school-holiday day could bring 17,000–22,000 visitor vehicles. That is the Authority's own document conceding demand exceeds supply. Its published figure for visitors arriving by car is 83% — from 2015. There is a 2040 target and no measurement published between the two. Its newest published room-occupancy figure is from 2004.

💰 Four costed levels, seven nights, per person, with flights, the long-distance rail fare and food excluded because nobody publishes any of the three: about $365 car-free in a hostel, about $715 for a couple doing it properly, about $378 for a family of four, about $1,465 for the luxury week. The family lands about $13 a head above the lone backpacker, because a four-bed room divides four ways and children are half price on the county pass. Parking is the real currency: £10.60 all day in Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside and Grasmere, against £1.40 before 9am. Lake Road in Ambleside holds 51 spaces.

🎯 Three traps. The Early Bird rate is 7.6× cheaper than the all-day tariff for the same space, and the council publishes 29,856 penalty notices in one year but no penalty amount. The seasonal cliff: the Wasdale bus and the Buttermere shuttle both ended 31 August, Kirkstone Pass is recorded closed by landslide, and the Authority's own £18 park-and-ride ticket is off sale with no replacement. And Stagecoach publishes two prices for the same day ticket on its own site, £12 on one page and £12.50 on two others, while its Bus and Boat Windermere page carries "These prices are valid from" and an empty table. The £3 single-fare cap becomes £2 on 1 January 2027.

✅ Of a ranked universe of 1,218, 98 listings clear 4.5/5 with 150+ reviews inside the first 330 ranks; by ranks 601–630 every listing has under 100 reviews. The free outdoor places systematically out-rate the paid indoor ones: Orrest Head 4.8/1,782 starting at Windermere village, Catbells 4.8/1,778. Wray Castle — the easiest National Trust property to reach without a car — is 3.4 from 2,159 reviews with its building closed. Hill Top is 4.3 and the World of Beatrix Potter 4.3. The National Park's own listing scores 4.3 from 97 reviews.

🗺 On Met Office 1991–2020 normals Ambleside takes 2,102.9mm a year, 2.29× Carlisle 40 miles away; May is the sunniest month at 162 hours and September is not the shoulder month everyone recommends. The Met Office publishes no sunshine figure for Keswick at all. The Environment Agency confirmed blue-green algae at Windermere, Coniston and Derwentwater in 2026. There is no A&E at Kendal. Honest absences: no published rail fare, no taxi tariff for the central Lakes, no fell-top mobile coverage figure, no count of fell deaths.

Five verdicts out of ten; the highest goes to the traveller who brings no car at all, and the lowest to the quiet season.

  3. Rugen: Germany's Domestic Island Crush & What To Skip — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Everyone says Rügen is crushed in August. The federal government's own Bundesverkehrswegeplan dossier concedes a high-capacity road connection through Bergen is "currently not given", and the Südost-Rügen biosphere action plan records "regular signs of overload on the main roads, especially in the tourist high season". But six bodies — ADAC, ADAC Hansa, the regional police, the state road authority, the federal highways research institute and the national park — publish no queue length, no delay and no journey time at all. And the state's own measure puts bed occupancy at 59.1% in August and 31.7% across the year: two beds in five empty at the peak.

💰 Four costed levels, seven nights, two people, with international flights, the long-distance rail fare and food excluded because nobody publishes any of the three: about $655 out of season, about $1,132 in the shoulder, about $1,918 for the identical room in July — the entire $786 difference is the room — and about $1,602 for a family of four. A fifth, luxury level could not be built at all: three upmarket Binz hotels publish no nightly rate, the Michelin Guide's own rate panel for the grandest is empty, and the one hotel with a static grid still shows 2018 prices.

🎯 Three traps. The €63 nationwide Deutschlandticket covers every island bus and — uniquely among Germany's Baltic routes bar one — the Hiddensee ferry, but the Rasender Roland charges a €12/day or €36/week supplement per person with photo ID, and resort guest cards don't work on it at all. Shops shut on Sundays: 58 named places get six hours between 11:30 and 19:00, and only 15 March–31 October and 17 December–8 January — and Bergen auf Rügen, the island's biggest town and rail junction, is not on the list. And you can no longer stand on the Königsstuhl: the centre's own page says the rock "is no longer accessible", there is no car access, and it publishes no standalone price for the Hagen car park at all.

✅ Of 180 rated attractions, only 13 carry 150+ reviews, only 7 clear 500, nothing clears 1,100 — and exactly ONE clears both 4.5/5 and 150 reviews. The island's most famous paid attraction fails the bar: the combined Jasmund/Königsstuhl listing is 3.4 from 1,025 and the €11m skywalk 3.6 from 838, the worst-rated element of its own site. Kap Arkona is 3.6 from 440 and no official body publishes its prices. What clears: Prora treetop walk 4.7/20,630, Störtebeker 4.8/18,767, Jagdschloss Granitz 4.5/10,076, Rasender Roland 4.5/502.

🗺 Honest absences, all named: no published rail fare to Binz, no taxi tariff anywhere on Rügen, no average room rate from any body, no standalone Hagen parking price, no Prora admission price, no Hiddensee winter timetable beyond 1 November — and the state government holds no data on which beaches are lifeguarded, because no law requires it to collect any.

Five verdicts out of ten; the highest goes to the car-free couple in late September, the lowest to the traveller with the most money.

  4. Sapporo: Snow Festival Crunch or Shoulder-Season Value — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Everyone books Sapporo for snow-festival week. Sapporo's own Second Tourism Plan calls winter its slow season — "a roughly 2× gap between the busy summer and the slow winter" — and the city's own FY2025 release puts February 7th of twelve months at 1,059,000 visitors against August's 2,009,000. So why does the same room cost 3.24× more? Because no official body in Japan publishes what a Sapporo room costs: the Japan Tourism Agency, the City of Sapporo and the Hokkaido Transport Bureau all publish occupancy and none publishes price. One Tokyo-listed property trust's filings do — February ¥20,397 against April ¥6,302.

💰 Four costed levels, seven nights, per person, all in December, flights excluded because no airline publishes a fare that stays true: about $661 solo, about $606 for a couple, **about $435 for a family of four — the cheapest person in the episode** — and about $1,585 for a luxury festival week. The family wins because a Japanese business-hotel room is priced per room, children's day passes are ¥420 against ¥830, and three museums admit children free. Swap December for February and the same solo week goes from about $661 to about $1,121 — and $455 of the $460 rise is the bed.

🎯 Three traps. Both lodging taxes started 1 April 2026 and in Sapporo they STACK — ¥300 a person a night at the floor, ¥1,000 at the ceiling — and although neither mentions a season, February's ¥20,397 clears the prefecture's ¥20,000 band by ¥397, so a season-blind tax tracks the season anyway. There is NO published airport taxi tariff: the regulator publishes metered rates only, the one quoted figure of about ¥12,900 is an airline's estimate, and a 20% winter surcharge applies 10 Dec–26 Mar. And two of five ski resorts have published nothing this season — one still shows last year's ¥16,200.

✅ Of about 1,330 rated things to do, about 22 clear 500 reviews and the last sits at rank 45; by rank 181 the best count on a page is 66. Exactly three places clear 4.5/5 with 150+ reviews — a hillside park 4.5/443, a nature-tour operator 4.9/234, and **a micro-pig café inside a shopping mall at 4.9/487.** Not one of the top ten reaches 4.5: the clock tower is 3.5/2,668 (2.7 on a Japan reference), the fish market 3.5/807. The free things rescue the city: Hokkaido Jingu 4.6/15,122, Hokkaido University 4.6/2,064, Odori Park 4.5/3,767.

🗺 Honest absences, each naming who was checked: no average room rate from any official body, no airport taxi tariff, no priced crab menu, no citable airfare, no air-ambulance price, no admission price for the chocolate factory park or the Moiwa ropeway — and the 2027 festival programme is unpublished until mid-December, so February bookers cannot see what they are buying. We also found no verifiable source calling the markets or ramen alleys tourist traps, and say so rather than saying it for them.

Five verdicts out of ten; the highest goes to the December couple, the lowest to the festival traveller.

  5. Los Cabos: Resort Bubble, Few Escapes & Who Should Skip It

    Show notes

🌍 Los Cabos advertises 22 certified beaches. Count them properly and it is about 12 — because 11 of the 22 on Baja California Sur's own state list are stretches of ONE beach, Playa El Médano, sold as separate hotel frontages. What is left is conditionally swimmable, not reliably: the municipal beach authority monitors 62 coastal zones, and on 5 April 2026 twenty-seven flew red, thirty-five yellow, none green. On 1 October 2026 every beach in the municipality shut under a black flag.

💰 Four costed levels, seven nights, per person, flights AND restaurant meals excluded because no airline publishes a fare that stays true and no named source publishes a Los Cabos menu price: about $2,290 solo in Cabo San Lucas town, **about $1,290 for a couple in town — the cheapest person in the episode** — about $1,370 each for a family of four in San José del Cabo, and **about $2,860 each for a couple on the tourist corridor.** That is 2.2× the town couple for the same week and the same beaches, and the bed alone accounts for $2,520 of it.

🎯 The premise inverts. The destination's own tourism observatory puts the corridor at 4,030 of 16,739 rooms — 24%, not most — at $649 a night against $289 in Cabo San Lucas town, running 68% full against the town's 76%. **The dearest strip of coast is also the emptiest.** The airport transfer runs 9.4× too: MX$100 on the regulated bus from Terminal 1, against the ride-hailing app's own published average of MX$943. No authority publishes an airport tariff — the operator's ground-transport page is a phone number and an opening time, and the only document it publishes on its own passenger charge is a discount table from 2013.

✅ Of 2,307 things-to-do listings, review counts fall below 150 at rank 13, only nine of the top thirty clear it, and ranks 37–58 are seven airport-transfer firms and five spas. Médano — the beach sold hardest — is 4.3 from 4,551 reviews and FAILS. Not one of the 18 golf courses clears 4.5. And the most-sold experience, the cheap boat to the Arch, is 4.7 on one platform, 4.4 on its sister site and 4.1 on a third: two of three say don't bother. What does clear the bar: the Arch 4.8/8,725, Chileno 4.5/2,761, Cabo Pulmo 4.6/497, and seven Cabo Pulmo dive operators at 4.7–5.0 with 152–365 reviews each.

🗺 Honest absences, each naming who publishes nothing: no official airport or taxi tariff though state law requires one; no daily price for the compulsory car-hire liability insurance from any firm; no Los Cabos restaurant price; no citable airfare; no word on whether published room rates are net or gross of tax; no annual drowning count; no air-ambulance price; and no out-of-hours staffing for the one hyperbaric chamber, two hours from Cabo Pulmo. Alternatives: La Paz about $255 a night, Huatulco about $218, against $499 here.

Five verdicts out of ten; the highest goes to the couple who book the town, the lowest to the all-inclusive corridor week.

Voices in this episode are AI-generated. Research, script and verdicts are produced by the Phil & H Travel team.

  6. Sylt: Germany's Byword for Expensive — Is There a Budget Version?

    Show notes

🌍 Two dated things moved in the last ten days. On 1 October 2026 Deutsche Bahn's new Sylt Shuttle tariff took effect — €79 single and €137 return for a car, against €75 and €130 a year earlier — and on 30 September the 2027 Deutschlandticket price was set at €66.80, up from €63. Sylt has no road: an 11km rail causeway opened in 1927 is the only fixed link, so your car crosses on a train in 35 minutes.

💰 We came to test whether a budget version of Germany's most expensive island exists. It does, and it is published. Campingplatz Westerland's own 2026 tariff — €9.50 for a small tent pitch, €6.00 an adult, €2.05 Kurabgabe — is €25.60 a night for two, so about $345 for two for seven nights including two Deutschlandtickets that also cover the train from Hamburg and every island bus. Against that, a Westerland hotel week with a walk-up car crossing is about $2,055. Same island, same week, 6.4× apart, every figure off a published tariff. The biggest single saving: a walk-up car return is €137 while two of DB's own quota online singles are €39.98 — 3.4× on the identical crossing.

🎯 Three traps. The terminal fare, where turning up costs about $110 more than booking. The holiday-flat headline rate: one Westerland apartment publishes €115 a night in July and then €58 of linen and €79 of final cleaning as compulsory, charged on the first night — 17% on top, plus a 7-night minimum. And the Kurabgabe: €4.10 a head a day in Westerland against €3.00 in Wenningstedt-Braderup, so the same week is €57.40 or €42.00 depending which village you sleep in — while Hörnum charges a DAY visitor €4.50 against an overnight guest's €4.10.

✅ The evidence on what to do is the thinnest we have found on a famous island. Tripadvisor publishes four contradictory totals for Sylt, and of 114 listings only four carry 150+ reviews and only two clear 4.5/5 with 150+: the Ellenbogen at 4.7 on 565 and the Uwe Düne at 4.5 on 268. Both free. The Sylt Aquarium is 3.7 on 209, its own review headlines reading "Not worth it" and "Small tanks, few fish and very expensive"; Naturgewalten is 4.3 on 232; Sansibar is 4.0 on 2,233. And the gourmet island has halved — ten Michelin stars across seven kitchens in 2014, five across four now.

🗺 On Germany's own weather-service normals, August is the wettest month of the Sylt year (90.0mm, 11.6 rain days) and May the sunniest (248 hours, 36.2mm) — so May survives the shoulder-season advice and September does not. The service publishes no wind normal at all, so we computed one from its daily record: the calmest month averages 6.5 m/s and records a Beaufort-6 gust on 21.8 of 31 July days. Honest absences throughout: no Sylt occupancy figure, no taxi tariff, no 2026 Fischbrötchen price from any island vendor, and no closure list from the tourist board.

Five verdicts out of ten; the highest goes to whoever spends the least, the lowest to whoever spends the most.

  7. Busan: Cheaper Seoul With Beaches — But Is It Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Two dated things moved five weeks apart. On 1 September 2026 Korea's transport ministry cut the Seoul–Busan KTX standard fare from ₩59,800 to ₩54,400 (about $44 to about $40) — the first change in 14 years and the first downwards — and merged SRT into KTX, so the cheaper service people used to search for no longer exists separately. Then yesterday, 1 October, the express coach fare ceiling rose 9%, and no operator has published the resulting Seoul–Busan fare at all.

💰 We came to test whether Busan really is the cheaper Seoul. Statistics Korea publishes a regional CPI and then names comparing cities with it as a misuse of the data. The one official series that does compare the two is the Korea Consumer Agency's dine-out survey: naengmyeon ₩12,000 vs ₩12,692, bibimbap ₩9,686 vs ₩11,769, kalguksu ₩8,071 vs ₩10,038, kimbap ₩3,543 vs ₩3,869. Busan is cheaper on all seven items, by a mean of 9.5% — real, official, and much smaller than the premise. A return KTX costs ₩108,800 (about $80) before the trip begins.

🎯 Three traps. Coming this month: BIFF runs 6–15 October and opens on a Tuesday, with one Haeundae five-star reported at ₩760,000 opening night rising to ₩1,090,000 on the first Saturday; Gwangalli rooms go five-fold for the 7 November fireworks and the early-bird seats sold out in one minute. The sky capsule: ₩40,000 per two-seat capsule one way (about $29) for a 30-minute ride at 4 km/h — 25× a metro fare — where your reservation is your entry time, not your departure, and being 30 minutes late means no refund. And Jagalchi's two-stage charge: buy raw downstairs, pay a cooking fee upstairs.

✅ The what-to-do finding is the hardest we have had from a famous city. Of a ranked universe of 340, only 32 of the top 120 listings carry 150+ reviews and only FOUR clear 4.5/5 with 150+: Spa Land 4.6/700, Dongbaekseom 4.5/643, the UN Memorial Cemetery 4.6/487 and Igidae Park 4.6/240. Three are free. Every Busan attraction with 500+ reviews fails the rating bar — Haeundae 4.3/3,547, Gamcheon 4.3/3,144, Jagalchi 3.9/1,755. And four of the ten tours that clear the bar are day trips to Gyeongju: the best-evidenced paid experience sold in Busan is leaving Busan.

🗺 On the published 1991–2020 normals, July is the wettest month (326.8mm, 13.6 rain days) and October the drier shoulder (79.6mm, 5.3 days) against April's 140.9 and May's 155.9 — so autumn beats spring here. Honest absences: no published post-cut KTX first-class fare, no published new coach fare, no official airport bus fare, no Busan hotel publishing both a peak and an off-peak rate, no guesthouse bed rate, no occupancy figure from any official body, no hospital price for a foreign patient, and no sea-temperature or wind normal.

Five verdicts out of ten; the highest goes to the value hunter, the lowest to the luxury traveller.

  8. Cornwall: Summer Roads, Booking Windows & What To Skip — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Two numbers moved in Britain this year, in opposite directions, and between them they decide what a Cornish week costs in 2027. Petrol is up 29.1% year on year — 173.46p a litre on the UK energy department's own series against 134.36p a year earlier, duty unchanged. Regulated rail fares were frozen from 2 March 2026, the first freeze in 30 years. Driving up nearly a third, the train up nothing — and none of it to do with the season.

💰 We came to test whether summer roads and cottage rates define a Cornish trip. The rates do: a holiday park at Portreath publishes its own full 2027 tariff, and the identical 2-bed cottage is £970 in peak August against £585 in May — ×1.66, about $510 — while the caravan a family books runs £405 to £825. The roads are a different story. The A30's worst bottleneck was dualled in June 2024 for £330m, and National Highways' own booklet forecast the saving at 5 to 6 minutes, with no evaluation published two years on. DfT puts Cornwall traffic 3.1% above 2019, Tamar movements have fallen — and nobody publishes a summer traffic count for Cornwall at all.

🎯 Three traps. St Michael's Mount, where the causeway opens about four hours a day, a full visit takes about four hours, the boats run only 15 March to 31 October, and its own FAQ twice declines to guarantee passage. The tariff board: seven 24-hour tickets at St Ives is £80.50 and the weekly ticket on the same board is £29, Kynance is coins only, Bedruthan cash only. And Saturday, the changeover day, when Geevor and Camel Valley are closed and the Mount's castle and gardens are shut or weekday-only.

✅ Four costed levels, seven nights, every component published: on foot with a tent about £391, a couple with a car and a cottage about £1,067, a family of four in a peak-August caravan about £1,191, the top end about £1,635 — before a bed, because not one Cornish hotel publishes a room rate. We checked ten. There is no tourist tax here and legally cannot be one yet; the government confirmed in September 2026 that the power is coming, uncapped.

🗺 May, not September, is the shoulder month: on Met Office Camborne normals it is 22% drier and 15.5% sunnier than peak August, while September is 23.6% wetter and a quarter duller than June — and September 2026 was the second dullest in 30 years. Of 2,589 Tripadvisor listings only 215 clear 150 reviews, the three most-reviewed attractions all fail our 4.5 bar, Land's End is 3.0 on 4,854 reviews while free Cape Cornwall is 4.8, and the best-rated free thing in the county is a covered walkway by a supermarket car park. Honest absences throughout: no summer traffic count, no Cornwall taxi tariff, no hotel or hostel rate, and no published price for the Mount's own gardens.

Five verdicts out of ten; the lowest goes to the visitor Cornwall markets itself to hardest.

  9. Puerto Vallarta: Hotel Zone or Zona Romantica — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 The airport group's own 4 September 2026 filing puts Puerto Vallarta at 4.233m passengers for January–August, down 12.4% — international traffic down 19.7% against domestic down 3.0%, the break dating to March 2026 at −32.1% and recovering in no month since. And Mexico's tourism ministry has stopped publishing this destination's occupancy: "n.d." from its April 2026 report onward, after 73.9% and 74.1% in the same seven months of 2024 and 2025.

💰 Hotel Zone or Zona Romantica? No official body publishes Puerto Vallarta by zone at all — the same federal table splits Los Cabos into three sub-centres and leaves this city as one — and none publishes a room rate for any Mexican destination. So only one side of town will quote you a price. One Zona Romantica boutique hotel publishes a full seven-tier 2026–27 card, $209 to $409 on its entry room and $809 at New Year, with its own line "plus 21% taxes, as required by law": 16% IVA plus a lodging tax that rose from 4% to 5% for 2026. The Hotel Zone all-inclusives publish nothing — one rates page 404s, one site fails on its own certificate, one returns a 520.

🎯 Four costed levels, seven nights, per person, flights excluded because no airline publishes a usable fare: about $555, $1,500, $585 for a family of four, $3,425 at New Year. Three traps: the pavement timeshare pitch is already unlawful under the city's own 2000 regulation, which bans street promotion and requires a credential with a photo and folio number; the cancellation window is five working days under Mexico's official timeshare standard, though the consumer law's own version excludes services starting within ten working days; and the pier, MXN 350 one way from Los Muertos against MXN 130 from Boca de Tomatlan for the same village.

✅ Of a ranked universe of 226–227 listings — the directory claims 1,509 — the evidence runs out at rank nine, where the ninth listing has 54 reviews. Everything clearing 4.5/5 with 150+ reviews is free to walk into bar one museum: the Malecon 4.6/17,525, Zona Romantica 4.6/3,990, the church 4.6/5,354. Los Muertos beach itself fails at 4.3/1,223. The biggest sample in town belongs to a tour operator at 4.7/27,167, and the best-evidenced paid days out go out of town.

🗺 Mexico's health regulator named Playa del Cuale, in the middle of Puerto Vallarta, one of only five beaches in the country unfit for swimming this summer at 235 against a 200-enterococci threshold — while Los Muertos scored 62, cleaner than the Hotel Zone's Playa Oasis at 190. On the weather service's own normals June is not a shoulder month: 209.6mm over 11.7 rain days, more than November-to-May combined. Honest absences: no official airport taxi tariff, no flight fare, no all-inclusive rate card, no occupancy figure, no air-ambulance price.

  10. Florianopolis: Nomad Inflows, Summer Traffic — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Florianópolis is a 675 km² island city of 587,486 residents that the municipality projects takes about 3 million visitors between mid-November and mid-May — its own word is that the population "more than doubles". We came to test whether high summer here is a peak-season trap. It is not, and the proof is a hotel's own price list: Costão do Santinho publishes its cheapest January 2027 night at R$534.60 for two and its cheapest May 2027 night at R$532.17.

💰 The trap closed by itself. Federal border data shows Argentine arrivals to Santa Catarina fell 5.0% in January–February 2026 while total international arrivals rose 3.7%; the InFOHB hotel index made Florianópolis one of only two of fifteen Brazilian cities with falling revenue per room (−3.1%) while the national market ran +10.5%; agents in Canasvieiras cut rental prices 40–50% and still half-filled. The one genuine spike is five days long: New Year at about $153 a night for two against about $103 in January — and Christmas week, at about $80, is the cheapest line on the card.

🎯 Three traps. One: you cannot pay a Florianópolis bus driver in cash — the operator's notice ended that on 5 January 2026 — and the alternatives need a Brazilian tax number, because the central bank's own key manual has no non-resident Pix key and the telecoms regulator's prepaid page makes no provision for a passport. Two: paying for "peak season" without checking which week. Three: Americans need a visa (US$80.90, eVisa only, since 10 April 2025, apply two months ahead) and the CDC's 2026 Yellow Book recommends yellow fever vaccination for Santa Catarina, eight weeks out. A trip booked three weeks ahead fails both clocks.

✅ Four costed weeks on the ground, arithmetic shown: backpacker about $190, mid-range couple about $390 a head, resort week about $670, top end about $1,300. Plus about $21 of international embarkation charge inside your ticket — and no direct flight from North America or northern Europe at all. The airport operator's own route list names nine international destinations and not one is in the US.

🗺 April is the best month on INMET's own normals — 9 rain days against January's 16, half the rainfall, 180 hours of sun. January is the wettest month of the year. September and October, sold as shoulder season, are the two darkest months on the record, darker than July. And the thing to plan around is free: IMA's bathing-water report had 27 of Florianópolis's 88 monitored points unfit in its 24 September 2026 edition, with every city-front and bay point failing and the lagoon failing at 5 of 9.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to a January family week, because the beaches the state certifies cleanest are the ones its fire service ranks most dangerous: 97% of 3,027 rescues in one 70-day season were rip currents, and 25 of 31 deaths were where there was no lifeguard.

  11. Yasawa Islands: Boat Passes, Meal Plans & What To Skip — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Twenty islands north-west of Fiji's mainland, reached by one scheduled catamaran a day from Port Denarau — quarter to nine in the morning, about four and a half hours to the far end. The Yasawas are sold on an enormous spread: one resort on Waya Island publishes a twelve-bed air-conditioned dorm at $30 a night and a two-bedroom beachfront villa at $610 on the same rate card. Twenty to one. We costed the whole week instead of the bed, and it comes out at about five to one.

💰 Because the thing that closes the gap is not the boat. It is dinner. Every resort on the ferry route charges a compulsory meal plan — the operator's own terms say they "are compulsory and must be taken at the resort as there are no alternate dining options" — running FJ$149 to FJ$249 per person per day, about $66 to $110. At one resort the food costs two and a half times the cheapest bed on the island. On the budget week we costed, the meals are 54% of the bill, the boat and the new fuel surcharge 29%, and the bed 17%. And you cannot opt out: there are no supermarkets, no general stores and no cooking facilities out here.

🎯 Three traps. One: a mandatory fuel surcharge took effect 2 October 2026 at FJ$20 per adult per one-way leg — flat on a pass, per sector point-to-point — and two resorts' own pages still publish the superseded April figures. Two: the Bula Pass costs about $117 more than a single return and only pays off at roughly three boat legs, which the operator itself concedes. Three: you cannot cost this trip before you arrive — one lodge's plan appears on the operator's table with no figure at all, another prices its plan in a third currency, and five properties don't mention Fiji's new 5% Tourism Services Tax anywhere on their own pages.

✅ Four costed levels for one person, seven nights, food included throughout: a village homestay at about $86 a night all-in, a village-owned lodge at about $87 with three meals or $65 camping, the pass-and-dorm trip at about $172, and a mid-range resort at about $347. The operator's own bundle beats buying the pass and a dorm separately by about $46 — and its wholesale dorm price sits at about $36.80 a night across all eleven tiers.

🗺 May to October is both the published manta ray window and Fiji's six driest months at the nearest station with published normals — and the Met Service publishes normals for thirteen stations, none of them in these islands. April and November are cyclone months sold as shoulder season. Nothing is bookable on a Sunday. Honest absences throughout: no published Flyer fare, no official cave entry fee, no medevac price, no resort water statement, and no 2026-27 cyclone outlook.

Five verdicts out of ten; the highest goes to the cheapest trip we costed, and the ferry company doesn't sell it.

  12. Ambergris Caye: Golf Carts, Reef Tours & What To Skip — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Ambergris Caye is Belize's biggest tourism destination and the island everybody calls overdeveloped. Here is the fact that reframes it: in May 2026 Belize's Cabinet froze buildings over 45 feet in Caye Caulker, Hopkins, the Placencia Peninsula and Sittee River — and left San Pedro out. The Coastal Zone Management Authority's own Ambergris guidelines set no height limit and no carrying-capacity threshold. The island with the heaviest development on this coast has the loosest published rulebook on it.

💰 It is also the cheapest part of this coast to reach and sleep on — and we corrected ourselves on the size of that. Tropic Air's standard Belize City–San Pedro round trip is US$210 against US$290 to Placencia: 38%, not the four-fold gap you get by quoting a US$67 flash sale against a standard fare. The real gap is beds — the cheapest room published on an Ambergris property's own site is US$175, against US$400 in Placencia and US$380 in Hopkins. Four costed levels: a mid-market week about US$1,156 a head, comfortable US$1,772, a private-island villa week US$10,240. The shoestring level has no number, and that is the point.

🎯 Three traps. One: US$73.50 of departure fees — passenger service US$15, airport development US$36, security US$1.25, baggage US$1.25, conservation US$20 — published not on the airport's fees page but on its refund policy page, and reclaimable only by Belizeans. Two: the dollar sign. Two published dinner menus at similar-looking prices produce bills about 1.8x apart, because one prints Belize dollars tax-in and the other US dollars tax-out. Ask "Belize or US?" first. Three: resellers charging for the free government entry form, one publishing a "+$20 super rush" surcharge on top of a base fee it declines to print. The official address is ideclare.gov.bz.

✅ The find nobody quotes: Hol Chan Marine Reserve does publish its price, buried in the shop on its own website as a four-tier day pass — BZ$30 (US$15) for a non-Belizean 13 and over, and BZ$0 for a non-Belizean aged 12 and under. Children under 13 enter free.

🗺 Also here: February is the month, on four published series at once — dry at 65mm over six rain days, lobster legal until the 28th, conch in season, sargassum at its lightest — while June and November, both sold as shoulder season, are the second and third wettest months of the year. There is no weather station on the island, and no hospital — the 45-bed replacement is 70% built, due spring 2027 — but there are two 24-hour hyperbaric chambers, more than Caye Caulker has. Honest absences throughout: nobody publishes a current water-taxi fare, the north-bridge toll, a tipping percentage, a visitor hospital tariff, or a test result for the tap water.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes somewhere that surprised us — and the closing line is about what this island will and will not put a number on.

  13. Luxor & Aswan: Cruise Package or Independent Nile — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 We came to audit a bundle and found the opposite. Every site a standard four-night Luxor–Aswan cruise visits — Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk — costs EGP 4,060 on the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' own tariff: about US$78 per person at the Central Bank of Egypt's rate of roughly 52 to the dollar. Against the cheapest published four-night cruise fare of US$725 a head, the temples are about 11% of what you pay. There is no hidden pile of ticket money: a Nile cruise is a hotel that moves.

💰 The real price story is one room. The ministry charges EGP 2,500 for the tomb of Nefertari and EGP 2,000 for Seti I — on top of the EGP 750 Valley of the Kings ticket — so one painted chamber costs more than all eight temples put together, and Seti I has no foreign student discount at all. None of the three premium tombs can be bought online. And the Luxor Pass, the supposed money-saver, loses: priced in US dollars against pound-denominated tickets, it costs roughly double what the same tickets cost individually. No ministry page publishes its price at all — two figures circulate, US$100/$200 and US$130/$250, and we say so rather than picking one.

🎯 Three traps. One: the tomb supplements take a ticket budget from about US$78 to about US$178. Two: the ministry runs three price-and-hours surfaces that disagree — Abu Simbel published at EGP 750 and sold online at EGP 822 with no fee named anywhere. Three: the departure fee everyone reports wrongly — Egypt's Tax Authority says the EGP 100 charge is years old, unchanged in value, and applies to Egyptians too.

✅ Four costed levels, per person for a week on the ground: shoestring about US$300, sensible independent with an accommodation line we cannot publish because seven of nine properties refuse to, a four-night cruise plus Luxor nights about US$915, and a top end from US$6,999. The Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor is CLOSED — Mandarin Oriental's own site now says Winter 2027, having said July 2027 in February — while the Old Cataract in Aswan is open with its Nile Wing under renovation.

🗺 November to March is the only window where both cities average under 30°C; the Egyptian Meteorological Authority's July normal is 41.4°C at both, with no rain days in June, July or August. Abu Simbel costs 60% more on the two Sun Festival dates, 22 February and 22 October. Aswan's marquee sights fail our review bar with big samples — the High Dam 3.5 from 1,176, the Unfinished Obelisk 3.7 from 941 — while Abu Simbel, at 4.9 from 3,942, is invisible on Tripadvisor's Aswan list because it sits in a geography of its own. Honest absences throughout: no airline publishes a London–Luxor fare, the sleeper operator publishes none, and no Egyptian body publishes a tipping figure.

Five verdicts out of ten; the lowest goes to whoever spends the most.

  14. Orkney: Cruise Crowds, Ferry Timings & Who Should Skip It

    Show notes

🌍 Orkney took 213,785 cruise passengers in 2024 against 21,920 residents — nearly ten per resident, squeezed into April to October. The council's own draft Visitor Management Plan, published 21 September 2026 and out for consultation until 16 October, concedes that volumes "exceed what these locations were designed to accommodate" and that buses run "at or beyond capacity on busy cruise days". But the cap everyone says Orkney imposed does not exist: the 2023 "category sum of 5" is a berth rule at two locations, and calls have gone 204, 232, 184 and 208 booked for 2026.

💰 The real story is one pocket. Orkney is lobbying for the power to charge cruise passengers a levy — its own worked example was £5 a head, about £1.07m on 2024 arrivals. It already charges £5.20 a head in harbour dues from 1 April 2026, about £1.11m, and harbour revenue is tied by law to piers and harbours. So the Ring of Brodgar still has no toilet, the nearest two miles away, a £100,000 bill against a £4,000 offer. No cruise levy exists in Scots law and no bill proposes one — don't confuse it with the accommodation-only Visitor Levy (Amendment) Act 2026.

🎯 Three traps. One: the Aberdeen overnight ferry calls at Kirkwall four nights northbound and three southbound — three and two in winter — so "fly to Aberdeen, take the boat" breaks, and NorthLink's conditions exclude all consequential loss. Two: Maeshowe is guided-tour only, four tours a day in summer and three in winter, and visitors report being turned away in 2023, 2024 and 2026. Three: Pentland Ferries moved sailings earlier for weather on 30 September 2026 — the Pentland Firth ran 93.7% punctual-and-reliable against 99.7% on the Aberdeen routes, and weather disruption carries no compensation.

✅ Four costed levels for two people, five nights, peak, food excluded and said so: camping and buses about £374, car and guesthouse about £623, NorthLink and a hotel about £1,314, the top end about £1,798 before flights — because Loganair publishes no fare table. Pentland undercuts NorthLink by about £60 on a car-plus-two return and never changes with the season. There is no tourist tax here: the council studied one and said no on 23 September 2025.

🗺 May is Kirkwall's sunniest and driest month on Met Office averages — and 2026's heaviest cruise month, so pick days, not weeks. The schedule is published free, daily. The Ness of Brodgar dig closed for good in August 2024; the Tomb of the Eagles reopened under community ownership. Of 277 Tripadvisor listings, 35 clear 150 reviews and 242 don't. Honest absences throughout: no Maeshowe capacity, no published fare for the world's shortest flight, no guide prices, no verifiable bed shortage.

  15. Mamanuca Islands: Catamaran Passes & What's Worth Doing — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 The Mamanucas are the islands most people picture when they picture Fiji — an hour off Nadi by catamaran, and sold almost entirely on the idea that you hop between them. We went to test that. The premise broke on the operator's own terms and conditions.

💰 Clause 11d of the Bula Pass terms says the pass is valid "to/from South Sea Island only in the Mamanuca Islands". One sandbar. Castaway, Mana, Malolo, Tokoriki, Beachcomber, Bounty and Treasure are not on it — the pass is a Yasawa product, USD 294 for 5 days to USD 435 for 15. So here every move is a full point-to-point fare (FJ$152 to Malolo, FJ$229 to Mana, FJ$250 to Tokoriki, FJ$305 to Vomo, each way) and every island is a closed economy: the same operator's clause 4d calls meal plans "compulsory and must be taken at the resort as there are no alternate dining options".

🎯 Three traps. One: buying that pass for a Mamanuca trip. Two: the boat you miss — Beachcomber's published off-schedule fare is FJ$220 against FJ$135 on-schedule, with a two-adult minimum, so a solo traveller pays FJ$440 (about $195) to leave an island. Three: the Tourism Services Tax, live since 1 September 2026 — Castaway adds 12.5% VAT and 5% TST at check-in to meal plans published "exclusive of taxes", while Malolo Cat built the 5% into its fares.

✅ The highest verdict goes to a family, and the reason is a menu, not a room: Plantation Island publishes children 0–11 FREE on every meal plan — about $556 of published value for two children over a week against Castaway's child tariff, more than the family's entire return boat fare (about $322). Malolo Lailai is also the one island where you can walk to a second restaurant. Beachcomber is 0.08 km² and 4 metres high: there is one restaurant because there is room for one.

🗺 Also here: the evidence is thinner than the fame. 23 listed attractions for the whole chain, 6 clearing 150 reviews, exactly ONE past 500 (Malamala Beach Club, 4.6/1,092), a scuba category with 7 results, and Monuriki — the Cast Away island — rated 4.9 from 21 reviews. The Monuriki cruise is the strongest-evidenced thing in Fiji (4.9/2,687 on Viator). The famous floating bar clears our 4.5 bar on one platform out of four. Mana Island Resort is closed for refurbishment. Honest absences: not one Mamanuca resort publishes a nightly room rate, nobody publishes the Monuriki landing fee paid to the people of Yanuya, and no medevac price is published anywhere.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the island-hopper the trip is sold to — and the closing line is a price list for islands you are not going to, beside a blank where the room rates should be.

  16. Isle of Wight: Ferry Timings & Who Should Skip It

    Show notes

🌍 An island you can see from the mainland, reached in under ten minutes — and the cost of that crossing has been a political argument for seventeen years. Talks between the island's two MPs, the three ferry operators, the NHS, the council and a campaign group began on 25 September 2026 and report around April 2027. We tested the premise. It comes back half true.

💰 The grievance is real: an economist commissioned by Transport for the South East found cross-Solent fares rose at least 80% between 2013 and 2023, against 32.5% inflation. But the profiteering story doesn't survive the filed accounts. Wightlink's operating company made £15.0m operating profit on £89.2m turnover — a 16.8% margin. The group that owns it lost £20.1m before tax on the same £89.2m and paid no dividend, because £22.5m of interest sits above it, £6.6m of that to the shareholders' own related-party loans. Red Funnel lost £31.9m before tax in 2024 and was sold against a lender deadline. Both sides quote true numbers from the same accounts. The structure is the story.

🎯 Three traps. One: the car. Wightlink's own illustrative week is £160–£220 return, plus £70 for a seven-day council parking permit — up to £290 before you sleep anywhere, on an island 23 miles across. Two: the Needles Landmark Attraction, 3.2/5 from 540 reviews, publishing no admission price and no chairlift price. Three: walk-up rail fares, up to 10× the cheapest advance single.

✅ Can a family afford it? Yes, and for less than almost anyone says: Hovertravel's published family period return is £100 for two adults and up to three children (£90 booked 48 hours ahead), and Southern Vectis's seven-day Freedom ticket for five is £80. About £170 for the crossing and a week's transport. And the famous attractions underperform — Osborne and Carisbrooke 4.4, Shanklin Chine 4.0, The Needles 3.6 — while Monkey Haven (4.8) and the Donkey Sanctuary (4.7) are what reviewers rate.

🗺️ Also here: the Island Line railway closes completely 31 Oct–29 Nov 2026, bus-replacing Ryde Pier Head in both phases. The UK emissions levy from 1 July 2026 exempted Scottish island ferries entirely, cut Northern Ireland to 50% and charges the Solent 100%. 12 of 15 bathing waters are Excellent, none Poor — but Sandown, a main resort, is only Good. Honest absences: neither car-ferry operator publishes a car fare at all, nine of ten hotels publish no nightly rate, and Tripadvisor served three different review totals for one attraction across three of its own storefronts in one afternoon.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the family who brought the car — and the closing line is a number the government will print and the ferry companies will not.

  17. Montreal: Festival Peaks, Winter Trade-Offs — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 Canada's most European city, checked against its own paperwork — and the premise breaks in the first five minutes. Winter is supposed to collapse Montreal's rates. On the Greater Montreal hotel association's own monthly survey it doesn't: the average nightly rate falls from CA$273 in August to CA$221 in February, just 19%. What collapses is occupancy — 86% to 58%.

💰 The month that actually works is one nobody advertises. April 2026 ran 67% occupancy at CA$231 — about CA$10 a night above February — with terraces legal again from 15 April, the full BIXI fleet back and no snow on the ground. October is NOT a shoulder: CA$254 at 74%, within 4% of August. And late May is now a peak, because the Grand Prix moved out of June (2027: 21–23 May).

🎯 Three traps. One: the hospital figure most articles quote is the cheap one. A visitor without provincial cover pays a published CA$1,635 minimum just to be admitted to emergency and CA$7,293 a day for a ward bed at one health authority — but the main downtown teaching hospital publishes CA$8,247 a day, and CA$22,023 a day for intensive care. Doctors' fees are extra. Two: the cheap CA$3.75 airport bus is real and dies on 19 October 2026 — after that it's CA$11.25 on the 747, which is at least also a 24-hour all-modes pass. Three: Quebec's ticket-resale disclosure rules took effect 12 September 2026.

✅ Of Tripadvisor's top 150 things to do, only 20 clear 4.5 with 150+ reviews — and the ranking is broken. The best free view in the city, the Kondiaronk lookout, has 21 reviews on Tripadvisor and 13,242 on Google: a factor of 630. Google rates 19 of 21 matched attractions higher. Three things guides still list are gone: the Montreal Tower observatory is shut until 2027, the contemporary art museum has no exhibitions until 2028, and the Old Port rink closed permanently in March 2025.

🗺️ Also here: the mayor changed in November 2025 and the premier in April 2026, and Quebec voted on 5 October 2026 — we recorded before polling day and don't pretend to know the result. Plus the CA$264m snow bill, up 43% and the priciest in a decade; 31 of 68 metro stations have lifts; legal home rentals run only 10 June to 10 September; and Quebec tip prompts must now be calculated pre-tax. Honest absences named with who was checked: nine hotels publish no nightly rate, nine of fifteen restaurants publish no prices, nobody prints a single bagel price, no airline publishes a London fare, and no sugar shack publishes 2027 dates.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the festival traveller — and the closing line is a price nobody in this city will print.

  18. Caye Caulker: The Go-Slow Appeal & What To Skip — Still Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 The Caribbean's most famous budget island, checked against its own paperwork. 2026 has produced ZERO Atlantic hurricanes — the first time since 1914 the basin has reached late September without one — under a Pacific warm event the Climate Prediction Center gives a 75% chance of being the strongest since 1950. Nothing has touched Belize this year. The season still runs to 30 November.

💰 The bed held; the boat did not. Hostel beds advertise at $11.06–$17, yet the crossing from Belize City is $29–$32 one way on the operators' own engines — so the ride costs more than five nights of sleeping there. Round trips save about $21 over two singles. Four hotels publish rates: Colinda from $119, Sea Dreams $145 + 9%, Seaside Cabanas $155–$315, Iguana Reef $199–$559. Ten of fourteen publish nothing, and no hostel publishes a dorm rate on its own site. Hotel tax is 9%; the rise to 12.5% is only a proposal. Leaving Belize costs $73.50 on the ticket.

🎯 Three traps. One: the $18 Belize travel health insurance is NOT required — optional since 14 July 2022 on the Tourism Board's own notice, and the official portal has suspended sales. Two: park fees differ by reserve — Hol Chan $15/head since Aug 2024, Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye BZ$60 + BZ$20 (the $40 your dive shop includes), while Caye Caulker Marine Reserve publishes no fee anywhere in the Fisheries Department's 197-page plan. Three: San Pedro Belize Express publishes its airport shuttle at $25 on its FAQ and charges $35 at its own checkout, plus a $1.50 port fee and a processing fee that ran 11% on one booking and 22% on another.

✅ Of Tripadvisor's 125 ranked things to do, 25 carry 150+ reviews and 20 clear 4.5 — and the most-reviewed place fails. The Split rates 4.1 from 572 with a Travellers' Choice badge; Frenchie's, the biggest dive operator at 907 reviews, rates 4.3 on both platforms. Caveman tops it at 4.9 from 2,307. Below position 81 nothing reaches 100 reviews, and Big Fish Dive Center still ranks at #120 with no review since September 2016.

🗺️ Also here: both operators raised fares in April 2026 and the Belize Port Authority says it never approved it — still under review on 22 July, nothing published since; Four Seasons Caye Chapel has slipped to 2027 after 2021, 2025 and 2026; no sewer until roughly 2030; a power cable laid in October 2025 never announced as energised; and 357 short-term rentals averaging $188 a night across just 128 hosts. Honest absences are named with who was checked: no restaurant menu, no dorm rate, no bike rate, no caye-level crime figure, no evacuation price, no island water-quality result, no 2027 sargassum forecast.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the luxury traveller — and the closing line is a price nobody on the island publishes.

  19. Naoshima: Art-Island Demand, Timed Entry & Thin Beds — Worth It?

    Show notes

🌍 The most photographed art island in the world, checked. The Town of Naoshima's own survey counts 1,128,353 facility admissions in 2025 — a record — against 749,493 in 2024, and 2,847 residents on the town's own register at 1 April 2026: about 396 admissions per islander, though the table counts admissions, not people. 2026 is a non-Triennale year — the next is 2028 — so this is the quiet version.

💰 Every paid door totals about $68 (¥10,700) online — Chichu ¥2,500 weekday / ¥2,700 weekend, Benesse House Museum ¥1,300 including the Valley Gallery, Lee Ufan ¥1,200, Ando ¥600, the New Museum ¥1,500, Sugimoto ¥1,600, the five-house Art House ticket ¥1,200, Minamidera ¥600. Ferries: Uno ¥370, Takamatsu ¥680, high-speed ¥1,590. Bus ¥100, coins only. Children 15 and under free at every Benesse museum, so a family of four does the island for about $70. Departure tax rose to ¥3,000 on 1 July 2026.

🎯 Three traps. One: on a Monday the museums shut AND the free 24-seat shuttle stops running — and you may not cycle in, because the road between the gates is private and barred to all but Benesse House guests. Two: Chichu tickets go on sale the second Friday of the month for the month after next, 8 per slot, no on-site sales once sold out — and Benesse's own English page mistranslates this as "the following month". A ¥12,000 annual pass skips the reservation. Three: the Teshima/Inujima boat runs three sailings a day and was cancelled for wind on 21 September 2026; Teshima closes Tuesdays, Inujima Tuesday–Thursday and is guided-tour-only since 1 March 2026.

✅ Nothing here clears our bar of 4.5/5 with 150+ reviews — on either platform. Tripadvisor's 30 ranked entries top out at Chichu 4.3 (877) and only 7 carry 150+. Google Maps, with 3–8× the sample, gives Chichu 4.4 (4,728), Benesse House Museum 4.3 (2,670), Ando Museum 4.0 (925), Lee Ufan 3.9 (1,414). The inversion: Google rates the art houses individually, and Minamidera takes 4.4 from 745 — tying the dearest experience on the island at about $3.80.

🗺️ Also here: Yayoi Kusama died on 14 August 2026, aged 97, so both pumpkins are now memorials; Kinza closed 13 Oct 2026–1 Jan 2027, the New Museum 24 Nov–12 Dec, Chichu 12 Jan–19 Mar 2027; Mandarin Oriental slipped again to around spring 2028; Kagawa has no bed tax but tabled a ¥200 draft on 8 Sept 2026; residents pay ¥320 at the bathhouse against a visitor's ¥660; and the half nobody mentions — Mitsubishi Materials has smelted copper here since 1917, over 200,000 tonnes a year with about 500 staff, and its tour drew 145 people in 2025. Honest absences are named with who was checked: no food price, no card guidance, no bed count, no clinic price, no tap-water statement.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the luxury traveller — and the highest to the one person who stays the night.

  20. Ile de Re: Toll Bridge, Second Homes & Who Should Skip It

    Show notes

🌍 Île de Ré is France's second-home island — and that is not what makes it unusual. INSEE's 2023 census puts second homes at 61.2% of the island's 23,656 dwellings, six times the French rate of 9.7%, rising to 83.6% at Les Portes-en-Ré, where 1,656 second homes sit against 302 year-round households. But INSEE puts Île d'Oléron next door at 61.3% and Noirmoutier at 68.9%. On the measure Ré is criticised for, it is indistinguishable from its neighbour. What sets it apart is the toll.

💰 The Département de la Charente-Maritime publishes a return car toll of €16 in high season (15 June–15 September, plus the Ascension and Pentecost long weekends *including their eves*), €8 in shoulder and €4 from 15 November to 1 March. Pedestrians and cyclists cross free. Permanent residents are exonerated. And a second-home owner pays €2 — in every season, all year. By law one third of each toll maintains the bridge and two thirds is an environmental levy earmarked for natural spaces, clean public transport and everyday cycle paths.

🎯 Three traps. One: the high-season band quietly includes two ordinary May weekends in 2027. Two: of eight readable hotel and campsite websites, exactly one published a nightly rate — while the tourist office's own database publishes rates for properties that publish none, including a five-star at €99–€617 for the same double room. Three: of three bike-hire firms, two publish no prices and the third day rates only — €98 a week against a published €53 elsewhere.

✅ The evidence is thinner than the island's fame. Of 210 ranked Tripadvisor entries, only ten carry 150+ reviews and only THREE clear 4.5 with 150+: the free Port de Saint-Martin-de-Ré (4.5, 1,409), the €2.05 Clocher Observatoire (4.5, 891) and Conche des Baleines beach (4.6, 165). The famous Phare des Baleines rates 4.4 from 2,621 and fails. The free Abbaye des Châteliers (4.2, 414) beats the ticketed Fort la Prée (3.9, 144), built from its stones. The toll bridge itself rates 3.5 from 181. And the Citadelle Vauban, 159 reviews, is a working prison you cannot enter.

🗺️ Also here: a reinforced drought order to 31 October 2026; three months of roadworks on the RD735 spine road to 18 December with the line 150 bus stop moved; Fort la Prée closed 29 September–18 October; the Écomusée at Loix open 2h45 a day, closed Sundays and Mondays; 12 supervised beaches out of 23 bathing sites, July and August only; 138 km of cycle path; and two alternatives — Oléron, whose bridge is free, and Noirmoutier, whose road vanishes under the sea twice a day.

Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the family who drives over in August — and the highest to the traveller who crosses for nothing.
