Pick Your Brainz Podcast

For our first-ever episode, Zeba and Louisa are joined by horror scholars Robin R. Means Coleman, PhD and Mark H. Harris, co-authors of The Black Guy Dies First, to sink our teeth into Ryan Coogler’s 2025 supernatural period film Sinners. 👹🎵🪕🩸

We trace the film’s place in the canon of Horror Noire, unpack its genre-bending brilliance, and explore how the blues become a force for freedom, connection and resistance.

Along the way, we get into hoodoo and Black diasporic traditions, the complexities of racial ambiguity, and the possibilities of cross-racial solidarity.

What does horror really say about the things we fear? 🧠💭

Welcome to Pick Your Brainz, the film analysis podcast where we interview the brainz behind all things horror. Hosts Louisa and Zeba summon filmmakers, authors, academics and horror insiders to explore the politics of fear, from gender and psychoanalysis to postcolonialism and beyond. Expect everything from recent horror hits to cult classics, with creepy convos that really get under your skin.

For anyone who likes to overthink their favourite horror films (us too, bestie). <3

Scalpels up, let’s pick some brainz.
