Alexandra Eala vs Alycia Parks - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Hong Kong Open
Show notes
Alexandra Eala vs Alycia Parks — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FIRST ROUND clash at the 2026 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open. This is Eala's FINAL TOURNAMENT of a historic season, and she's the No. 2 seed.
Alex Eala closes out 2026 ranked World No. 19, seeded second, in the strongest position of her career. What a year it's been: the FIRST WTA SINGLES TITLE ever won by a player from the Philippines at the DC Open in Washington — past Qinwen Zheng, Leylah Fernandez, Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in a single week — a Toronto round of 16, a US Open third round as the highest-seeded Filipina in Grand Slam history, and Asian Games bronze.
The Asian swing has been harder: 3-4 across it, with early exits in Singapore and Wuhan. But she finished it well, reaching the QUARTERFINALS at the WTA 500 in Tokyo and pushing Diana Shnaider to three sets. There's a real chance to end the year with a trophy here.
Alycia Parks is a live first round. The American, ranked around World No. 65, splits the head-to-head with Eala 1-1 — and the two matches tell you how volatile this matchup is. At the AUSTRALIAN OPEN in January, Parks lost the opening set 6-0 and still won 0-6, 6-3, 6-2. In TORONTO in August, Eala turned it around, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Three sets both times, and a lopsided set in every single one.
A win sets up a second round against Tereza Valentova or Chinese teenager Xinran Sun. Elsewhere in the draw: VENUS WILLIAMS and Sofia Kenin hold wildcards, and last year's champion Victoria Mboko isn't defending through injury — leaving this title genuinely open.

• Eala's full season in context
• Why Parks is a genuinely awkward opener
• Her realistic path to a second career title
• Prediction and predicted scoreline

Carlos Alcaraz vs Alex de Minaur - Preview & Prediction - 2026 ATP Vienna Open Final
Show notes
Carlos Alcaraz vs Alex de Minaur — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for the FINAL of the 2026 Erste Bank Open in Vienna. Alcaraz has never lost to him. De Minaur has just played the match of his season to get here.
Carlos Alcaraz hasn't dropped a set all week. The second seed — who only entered Vienna LATE, after his shock loss to World No. 39 Zizou Bergs in Shanghai, wanting court time before Paris and Turin — closed out Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6(2) in 1 hour 36 minutes to reach his FIRST VIENNA FINAL. He's now won 15 STRAIGHT MATCHES at ATP 500 level this season, and he's bidding for his 28TH CAREER TITLE and fourth of 2026.
Alex de Minaur produced the upset of the tournament. The fifth seed beat top seed and incoming year-end World No. 1 Alexander Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4), converting his THIRD MATCH POINT after being blown off court 6-1 in the second set. He becomes the FIRST AUSTRALIAN FINALIST IN VIENNA'S HISTORY, and the run moves him into a qualifying position for the ATP Finals in Turin. It's also redemption of a sort after he was forced to retire from the Beijing final against Novak Djokovic earlier this month.
But the head-to-head is brutal reading for him: ALCARAZ LEADS 6-0, including 2-0 on indoor hard courts, and de Minaur has won only TWO SETS across all six meetings. Nobody on tour matches de Minaur's speed and court coverage better than Alcaraz, which is precisely why this matchup has been so one-sided.
Fresh off a set-free week against a man who just beat the new world No. 1 from a set and a break down. Something has to give.

• Why Alcaraz has such a bad matchup for de Minaur
• What de Minaur did differently against Zverev

Diana Shnaider vs Leylah Fernandez - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Tokyo Open Final
Show notes
Diana Shnaider vs Leylah Fernandez — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for the FINAL of the 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. One player has been through three brutal matches. The other hasn't played a competitive set since Thursday. That might decide everything.
Diana Shnaider is the third seed and she has earned this the hardest way possible. She survived Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, then came from a set down and saved FOUR BREAK POINTS at 4-4 in the second to outlast Alexandra Eala 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 — her second win over the Filipina in consecutive weeks after beating her in Ningbo. Then another three-setter against 18-year-old wildcard Mia Pohankova, 6-4, 7-6(7). That's a lot of court time for a player chasing her FIRST TITLE OF THE SEASON.
Leylah Fernandez could hardly be fresher. The unseeded Canadian, ranked World No. 23, reached the semifinals WITHOUT PLAYING when Elena Rybakina withdrew from their quarterfinal with a neck injury, then beat Kamilla Rakhimova 7-5, 6-3. It's her 11TH CAREER FINAL, and she's been quietly dangerous all season — she stunned World No. 5 and reigning French Open champion Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-4 in Toronto for her first top-10 win in over a year, and reached the US Open fourth round.
The head-to-head belongs to Shnaider: she leads 3-2 and HAS WON THEIR LAST THREE MEETINGS. But fresh legs in a final against an opponent who has spent three consecutive matches in the trenches is exactly the kind of imbalance that decides titles.
Two left-handers, two players desperate for a trophy, and one of the most intriguing freshness-versus-form finals of the season.

Alexandra Eala vs Diana Shnaider - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Tokyo Open QF
Show notes
Alexandra Eala vs Diana Shnaider — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their QUARTERFINAL at the 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. A rematch just ONE WEEK after Shnaider beat her — and she needed SEVEN MATCH POINTS to do it.
That's the detail that makes this interesting. In the Ningbo second round on October 22, Shnaider beat Eala 7-5, 6-4 in their first tour-level meeting — but had to serve out the win SEVEN TIMES before finally converting. Eala was right there. Seven days later she gets another go.
Alex Eala arrives in better shape than at any point in this swing. The eighth seed swept Mika Stojsavljevic 6-1, 6-2 in her opener, then produced her best performance in weeks in the round of 16, recovering from a set down to beat Australian Talia Gibson 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in 1 hour 53 minutes — NINE ACES, SIX BREAKS OF SERVE, and a final set that was a shutout. That's the player who had the summer of her life: the FIRST WTA SINGLES TITLE ever won by a Filipina in Washington, a Toronto round of 16, a US Open third round, and Asian Games bronze.
Diana Shnaider is the third seed and World No. 13. Her recent hard-court form includes wins over Karolina Muchova, Jessica Pegula and Karolina Pliskova, she was the Ningbo runner-up in 2023, and she's had to grind in Tokyo too — beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Eala herself called Shnaider's season "very strong" and the match "a tough one."
And the tactical wrinkle again: BOTH ARE LEFT-HANDERS. Neither gets the usual lefty advantage, which turns this into a straight contest of who strikes better from the ad court — and in Ningbo, that was decided by a handful of points.

Alexandra Eala vs Talia Gibson - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Tokyo Open
Show notes
Alexandra Eala vs Talia Gibson — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their ROUND OF 16 clash at the 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, a WTA 500 at the Ariake Coliseum. Two players having breakout seasons, and one uncomfortable connection between them.
Alex Eala is the EIGHTH SEED and she opened in exactly the manner she needed, sweeping British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic 6-1, 6-2 in 75 minutes. After a rough Asian swing — first-round exits in Singapore and Wuhan, both from a set up against players outside the top 180 — the level in this one looked much closer to the player who had the summer of her life: the FIRST WTA SINGLES TITLE ever won by a player from the Philippines in Washington, a Toronto round of 16, a US Open third round as the highest-seeded Filipina in Grand Slam history, and Asian Games bronze.
Talia Gibson is a genuinely tough round of 16. The Australian has had her own breakout year, reaching a career-high World No. 37 in September and sitting around No. 38 now. She announced herself in Tokyo by taking out Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5 — a bagel opening set against a former top-10 player.
And here's the awkward part. Gibson reached the FINAL of the Singapore Open last month — the same tournament where Eala, seeded third with a first-round bye, went out in her opening match to World No. 180 Tatiana Prozorova. The draw Eala couldn't convert, Gibson went all the way through.
No previous tour meeting that I can find. Two players around the top 20 and top 40 with momentum, in a draw that also features Elena Rybakina, Naomi Osaka and Maja Chwalinska.

Zeynep Sonmez vs Sara Sorribes Tormo - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Guangzhou Open
Show notes
Zeynep Sonmez vs Sara Sorribes Tormo — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FIRST ROUND clash at the 2026 Guangzhou Open, a WTA 250 at the Nansha International Tennis Center. A seeded player against one of the most awkward opponents in tennis.
Zeynep Sonmez is the SIXTH SEED and continues the best season of her career. Turkey's No. 1 and the highest-ranked Turkish player in WTA history reached a career-high World No. 48 in July, after starting 2026 outside the top 100. The year has included a third-round run at the Australian Open and breakthrough weeks in Madrid, Nottingham and Toronto, plus a first-round meeting with Coco Gauff at the US Open. She sits around World No. 63 now and will want points in a draw she's seeded in.
Sara Sorribes Tormo is the kind of first-round draw nobody wants. The Spaniard is in on a PROTECTED RANKING after time away, and while she's listed around World No. 194, that number tells you nothing about the problem she presents. She is one of the most relentless retrievers on tour — a player who turns matches into attritional, rhythm-destroying slogs and has beaten top-10 opposition by simply refusing to miss. Seeded players have been dragged into three-hour afternoons by her more than once.
So this is form and ranking against style and experience. Sonmez is the favourite on paper. The question is whether she has the patience to construct points against someone who gives her nothing for free.
Elsewhere in the draw: Venus Williams and Sofia Kenin are among the wildcards, with Paula Badosa and Janice Tjen also in the field.

Novak Djokovic vs Ugo Humbert - Preview & Prediction - 2026 ATP Basel Open
Show notes
Novak Djokovic vs Ugo Humbert — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FIRST ROUND clash at the 2026 Swiss Indoors in Basel. And the subplot is extraordinary: Djokovic could tie ROGER FEDERER'S all-time title record this week, at Federer's HOME TOURNAMENT.
Djokovic arrives on 102 CAREER TITLES after winning the China Open in Beijing earlier this month — his seventh there, extending a perfect 34-0 record at that event, and his 21st consecutive season with a title, an Open Era record. Only Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) have won more. Win Basel, and he draws level with Federer — in the city where Federer grew up, at the tournament Federer won ten times.
He's here on a WILD CARD, requested late by his management, making his first Basel appearance SINCE 2011 and only his fourth overall. He won the title here in 2009 and holds a 12-2 record at the event. He's also 11th in the Race to Turin and needs results to secure another ATP Finals qualification.
Ugo Humbert is a genuinely dangerous first round. The French left-hander is ranked around World No. 31-35, and FOUR OF HIS SEVEN ATP TITLES have come INDOORS — this is his surface. He beat Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the 2024 Paris Masters final, so the big scalp is well within range.
Their only previous meeting came in the 2019 Wimbledon fourth round, which Djokovic won in straight sets. Seven years is a long time, and this is a very different setting.
All of this five weeks after Djokovic lost in the FIRST ROUND of the US Open to Mariano Navone while visibly unwell, and spoke openly about not knowing how much longer he could continue.

Naomi Osaka vs Jasmine Paolini - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Tokyo Open
Show notes
Naomi Osaka vs Jasmine Paolini — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FIRST ROUND clash at the 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. A four-time Grand Slam champion playing at home, against a two-time Slam finalist who has already beaten her once.
This is a brutal opening round for both. Naomi Osaka is the SEVENTH SEED, ranked around World No. 19, and playing in JAPAN — where the emotional weight of every match is different. She's had her best season in years at roughly 29-12: a run to the DC Open semifinals in Washington, a Toronto quarterfinal, and a US Open fourth round that was her deepest Slam run since 2021, ending with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to eventual finalist Elena Rybakina.
Jasmine Paolini is unseeded at around World No. 35 in a season that hasn't matched her peak, roughly 19-16. But this is a player who reached BOTH the Roland-Garros and Wimbledon finals in 2024, and she showed in Ningbo last week that her competitive instincts are intact — escaping from 5-0 DOWN IN THE SECOND SET to beat Anhelina Kalinina.
And crucially: PAOLINI LEADS THE HEAD-TO-HEAD 1-0, having beaten Osaka in three sets in Miami. That's the only time they've played, and it's the reason the bookmakers' edge for Osaka doesn't tell the full story.
Osaka is the favourite — home crowd, higher ranking, better season. But a first round against a former Slam finalist with a win over you already is about as awkward a start as a seed can get. The draw also features defending-era contenders Elena Rybakina, Maja Chwalinska and Alexandra Eala.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Karen Khachanov - Preview & Prediction - 2026 ATP Vienna Open
Show notes
Carlos Alcaraz vs Karen Khachanov — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FIRST ROUND clash at the 2026 Erste Bank Open in Vienna. One of the most brutal opening draws of the season: a recent US Open semifinalist, in round one.
Carlos Alcaraz is the second seed and he's here almost by accident. He added Vienna LATE to his schedule after his shock 7-5, 7-6(4) loss to World No. 39 Zizou Bergs in Shanghai, wanting court time before the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals — and feeling fresh after the right wrist injury that kept him out for more than four months. It's his first appearance in Vienna since 2021, when he reached the SEMIFINALS on debut as a teenager.
Karen Khachanov is about as unwelcome a first-round opponent as the draw could have produced. The former top-10 player reached the US OPEN SEMIFINALS just weeks ago — only his third Grand Slam semifinal — before losing to Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(6). He also took Alcaraz to four sets in the Australian Open quarterfinals this year, dropping just one set.
But the head-to-head is stark: ALCARAZ LEADS 6-0. Khachanov has never beaten him.
Alcaraz's wider season has been strange — the wrist injury, the US Open quarterfinal exit to Ben Shelton at 3:33 a.m., the Tokyo title defence that he said he wasn't sure would ever come, then the Bergs upset. With Zverev already confirmed as year-end World No. 1, this is about form and Turin rather than rankings. His projected route runs through Tommy Paul or Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals and possibly Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

Iva Jovic vs Jasmine Paolini - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Ningbo Open
Show notes
Iva Jovic vs Jasmine Paolini — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their SECOND ROUND / ROUND OF 16 clash at the 2026 BNB Ningbo Open, a WTA 500 in China. A rising American teenager against a former Grand Slam finalist.
Iva Jovic is the FOURTH SEED here and arrives with a first-round bye. The 18-year-old American has had a genuine breakout year: a career-high World No. 14 in August, around 31-16 on the season, a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open — where she became the youngest American woman to reach the last eight in Melbourne since Venus Williams in 1998 — plus the Wimbledon fourth round, and a US Open run that included beating Alexandra Eala 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in a three-hour epic on Arthur Ashe before losing to Coco Gauff.
Jasmine Paolini is a far more awkward opponent than her current ranking suggests. The Italian sits around World No. 31-35 in a season that hasn't matched her best, but this is a player who reached BOTH the Roland-Garros and Wimbledon finals in 2024 and knows exactly how to win matches when she isn't playing her best tennis. She proved it in the first round here, ESCAPING FROM 5-0 DOWN IN THE SECOND SET to beat Anhelina Kalinina 6-2, 7-5.
That's the match in a sentence: Jovic has the better form, the seeding and the bye; Paolini has the bigger-match pedigree and just showed she won't fold. The bye cuts both ways too — Jovic comes in fresh but cold, against an opponent who already has court time and a comeback in her legs.
The winner moves into the quarterfinals of a draw that also features defending champion and World No. 1 Elena Rybakina.

Zeynep Sonmez vs Ann Li - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Japan Open
Show notes
Zeynep Sonmez vs Ann Li — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their ROUND OF 16 clash at the 2026 Kinoshita Group Japan Open in Osaka. The top seed against Turkey's trailblazer, and both arrive having had to dig themselves out of trouble.
Ann Li is the TOP SEED and the highest-ranked player left in the draw. The American reached a career-high World No. 28 in August and sits around No. 31, off a 2026 that included a Madrid Open fourth round and a strong hard-court summer. She needed three sets to get here, dropping the opener before recovering to beat Emerson Jones 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 — the middle set tells you how quickly she can take a match away from an opponent.
Zeynep Sonmez has had the best year of her career. Turkey's No. 1 and the HIGHEST-RANKED TURKISH PLAYER IN WTA HISTORY started 2026 outside the top 100 and climbed to a career-high World No. 54 in June, with a third-round run at the Australian Open and breakthrough weeks in Madrid, Nottingham and Toronto. She also had to come from a set down in Osaka, beating Maya Joint 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
So both are through on resilience rather than dominance, and both have proven this week that losing a set doesn't finish them. Li is the ranking favourite and the model picks her — but Sonmez has already beaten a seeded player here and has nothing to lose against the No. 1 seed.
A win would put Sonmez into a WTA 250 quarterfinal and keep a genuinely historic season moving. For Li, it's a real chance at a title as the highest seed in the field.

Alexandra Eala vs Diana Shnaider - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Ningbo Open
Show notes
Alexandra Eala vs Diana Shnaider — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their SECOND ROUND clash at the 2026 BNB Ningbo Open, a WTA 500 in China. An all-left-handed matchup, and comfortably Eala's toughest test of the Asian swing.
Alex Eala finally got back on track. After first-round exits in Singapore (to World No. 180 Tatiana Prozorova from a set up) and Wuhan (to qualifier Han Shi, again from a set up), she snapped a THREE-MATCH LOSING STREAK by sweeping Diane Parry 6-3, 6-1 in the Ningbo first round — her 34TH WIN OF THE SEASON, in what remains a breakout year. She's now World No. 20, off a season that produced the FIRST WTA SINGLES TITLE ever won by a player from the Philippines in Washington, a Toronto round of 16, a US Open third round and Asian Games bronze.
Diana Shnaider is a significant step up. The sixth seed is ranked around World No. 13 and she is in good form on this surface — her recent hard-court run includes wins over Karolina Muchova, Jessica Pegula and Karolina Pliskova. She came through a genuine battle in the first round here, beating Yulia Putintseva 7-5, 7-6(4) in 2 hours and 26 minutes — her second win over Putintseva in six days. She also knows this tournament: she was the NINGBO RUNNER-UP IN 2023, losing the final to Ons Jabeur.
The stylistic wrinkle is the fun part: BOTH ARE LEFT-HANDERS. That takes away the natural advantage each usually enjoys, and turns this into a straight contest of who strikes the ball better from the ad court.
Eala's path beyond this is steep — a possible quarterfinal against World No. 11 Iva Jovic and a semifinal against defending champion and World No. 1 Elena Rybakina. But after two chastening weeks, a win over a top-15 player would mean a lot more than ranking points.

Why Did Gael Monfils Retire Early? Elina Svitolina Announces Divorce To Monfils
Show notes
Two significant stories from the tennis world this week. Gael Monfils' 20-year career appears to be over — WEEKS EARLIER than planned, with no farewell and no public confirmation. And Elina Svitolina has announced that their marriage is ending.
WHY DID MONFILS RETIRE EARLY?
In October 2025, Monfils announced that 2026 would be his final season. "Life is too short," he said at the time. The plan was clear: a year-long goodbye, finishing at the Paris Masters from October 31 in front of a home crowd.
That isn't what happened. The International Tennis Integrity Agency now lists him among players who have declared themselves retired, with his career recorded as over from OCTOBER 5. He held a wild card for Lyon and withdrew, with organisers citing "personal reasons." The Paris farewell is off.
Which means his final professional match was a SECOND-ROUND LOSS AT THE US OPEN — a match nobody, including possibly Monfils himself, knew was the last. He has still not publicly confirmed his retirement.
SVITOLINA ANNOUNCES THE END OF THE MARRIAGE
On October 19, Elina Svitolina announced on social media that she and Monfils are ending their marriage. She cited the emotional toll of Russia's war in her homeland, saying she needs to find her way back to herself and cannot do that within the marriage. She was clear that there is "no one to blame," and Monfils shared her post on his own platforms.
The couple married in July 2021 and have a daughter, Skai, born in October 2022. Svitolina said their daughter remains their priority.
In this video: the timeline of Monfils' retirement and why the ending is so unusual for a player of his standing, what the ITIA listing actually means, a look back at a career that made him one of the most watchable athletes of his generation, and the Svitolina announcement in her own words.

The ATP and WTA Tour Get Shaken Up By Two New Masters Champions!
Show notes
Two first-time 1000-level champions in one day. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won the SHANGHAI MASTERS and Maja Chwalinska won the WUHAN OPEN — both from a set and a break down, both for the biggest titles of their careers. Full analysis of a weekend that reshaped both tours.
ALEJANDRO DAVIDOVICH FOKINA — SHANGHAI
The Spaniard beat compatriot Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in an all-Spanish final, recovering from a set and a break down at 1-6, 2-3. It is his FIRST ATP MASTERS 1000 TITLE and the biggest of his career — and it comes after he LOST THE FIRST FIVE FINALS he ever played, including Monte-Carlo in 2022. He survived a MATCH POINT against Frances Tiafoe in the third round and came from a set down against incoming year-end World No. 1 Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. He rises to a career-high World No. 13.
For Rafael Jodar, seeded 12th, it was also a first Masters 1000 final, and he was a set and a break up before calling for a trainer at 4-3 in the decider.
MAJA CHWALINSKA — WUHAN
The Pole claimed the FIRST TITLE OF HER CAREER — and made it a WTA 1000 — beating Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 after trailing 6-2, 2-0. She lost serve only once more from there and broke Kartal FIVE TIMES. Her route was brutal: Mayar Sherif, Marie Bouzkova, Iva Jovic, Maria Sakkari and IGA SWIATEK. The 16th seed banks 1,000 ranking points and breaks into the TOP 20 for the first time.
It caps a breakthrough year in which she also reached the ROLAND-GARROS FINAL. For Kartal, ranked 170th, simply reaching the final made her the LOWEST-RANKED WTA 1000 FINALIST on record.
In this video: how both finals were won, what these results say about the state of both tours heading into the indoor season, where Davidovich Fokina and Chwalinska now sit in the rankings, and whether either can back it up.

Daniil Medvedev vs Stefanos Tsitsipas - Preview & Prediction - 2026 ATP Shanghai Open
Show notes
Daniil Medvedev vs Stefanos Tsitsipas — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FOURTH ROUND clash at the 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters. One of the most-played rivalries in the modern game, in a draw that has blown wide open.
Daniil Medvedev is the fifth seed and he has been ruthlessly efficient this week, dismantling Dalibor Svrcina 6-2, 6-3 in just ONE HOUR AND 14 MINUTES while breaking serve FIVE TIMES. Shanghai and these conditions have always suited his game, and with second seed Carlos Alcaraz already gone — upset 7-5, 7-6(4) by World No. 39 Zizou Bergs — the path through this half has opened up considerably.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is in the middle of the most encouraging stretch he's had in nearly two years. The former World No. 3 slipped outside the top 75 by May after 18 months of struggle, split with his father as coach in late June and brought in Thomas Perrin from the Mouratoglou academy. Since then the signs have been real: at the US Open he took out Cincinnati champion Arthur Fils 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-4 despite being 0-5 in the head-to-head, then beat No. 18 seed Jiri Lehecka to reach his FIRST US Open fourth round in NINE main-draw appearances, before losing to Ben Shelton.
The head-to-head belongs to Medvedev — he leads 10-5, and 6-2 on hard courts. But Tsitsipas won their most recent meeting 6-3, 6-4 in Doha in February this year, and he beat Medvedev in Shanghai in 2024. He knows how to win this matchup.
Medvedev is the favourite. But a resurgent Tsitsipas with recent form in the rivalry, in a draw missing Alcaraz, is exactly the kind of live underdog worth taking seriously.

- What Tsitsipas has changed since June

What's Wrong With Alexandra Eala? Han Shi Upset In Wuhan | Post Match Analysis
Show notes
Alexandra Eala is out of the Wuhan Open in the first round, beaten 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Chinese qualifier Han Shi — and it's the SECOND STRAIGHT TOURNAMENT she has lost from a set up to an opponent ranked outside the top 200. Full post-match analysis of what's actually going wrong.
The pattern is the story. In Singapore, Eala led World No. 180 Tatiana Prozorova by a set and 4-2 in the second, and lost 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in three hours and nine minutes. In Wuhan, she took the opening set 6-4 against a player ranked around No. 217 — and from 3-3 in the second, Han Shi broke her twice in a row behind a barrage of forehands and never looked back, closing it out in two hours and 27 minutes.
Two matches, two first sets won, two losses to players ranked over 190 places below her. That's not bad luck. That's something to look at.
Credit where it's due: Han Shi has had the week of her life. The 21-year-old came through qualifying the hard way, recovering from a set down to beat Peyton Stearns before taking out the in-form Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets. This is her FIRST TOP 20 WIN, and she had only two main-draw WTA wins in her career before this week. She plays Leylah Fernandez next.
For Eala, Wuhan remains a tournament she has still never won a match at — first-round exit in 2024, no main draw in 2025, and now this. It's a flat end to an Asian swing that also brought Asian Games bronze, and it follows the season that made her the first Filipina to win a WTA title.
In this video: where the second set turned, the serving and break-point numbers across both recent losses, whether this is a closing-out problem, a physical problem after a long season, or simply the natural correction after a career-best summer — and what the ranking picture looks like now.

Carlos Alcaraz SHOCK Loss To Zizou Bergs In Shanghai | Post Match Analysis
Show notes
Carlos Alcaraz is out of the Shanghai Masters, beaten 7-5, 7-6(4) by World No. 39 Zizou Bergs — and the loss has confirmed Alexander Zverev as YEAR-END WORLD NO. 1 for the first time in his career. Full post-match analysis.
It took Bergs two hours and three minutes, and he earned every minute of it. The unseeded Belgian hit 24 WINNERS to Alcaraz's 16, converted three of the four break points he created, and held his nerve after failing to serve the match out at 6-5 in the second — recovering to take the tiebreak and sealing it on his first match point with his NINTH ACE. It's comfortably the biggest win of his career, and his first against Alcaraz in two meetings.
For Alcaraz it ends a seven-match winning streak. He came into Shanghai having just defended his Japan Open title in Tokyo, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4 for his first trophy since a four-and-a-half-month wrist injury layoff — a week where he said "I didn't know if I was going to win again this season." The level looked genuinely restored. This is a reminder that the rhythm isn't fully back.
And the ranking consequence is the bigger story. With Jannik Sinner having ended his season early with a knee problem, Alcaraz needed results here to stay in the race — and this defeat mathematically confirms ALEXANDER ZVEREV as the year-end No. 1 for the FIRST TIME, capping a season in which he won Roland-Garros, reached the Wimbledon final, and won the US Open.
In this video: how Bergs actually won it, the winners and break-point numbers, whether this is a blip or evidence the injury comeback is still incomplete, what the year-end No. 1 confirmation means, and what's left for Alcaraz in the indoor swing and Turin.

Qinwen Zheng Becomes First Chinese Woman To Win WTA China Open! | Post Match Analysis
Show notes
Zheng Qinwen has made history. The wildcard beat Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 to become the FIRST CHINESE WOMAN EVER to win the China Open — a tournament that has been running since 2004 — claiming her first WTA 1000 title in front of a home crowd in Beijing. Full post-match analysis.
She clinched it on her first match point with an ace to Andreeva's backhand, then collapsed on the court in tears. She celebrated with on-court KARAOKE.
The milestone is enormous. Chinese players had gone 0-7 IN SEMIFINALS at this event before this week. Zheng became the first Chinese finalist in its 22-year history, and then went one better. It's her sixth WTA Tour title, her FIRST WTA 1000, and her FIRST TITLE OF ANY KIND SINCE 2024.
And look at how she got here. She entered as a WILDCARD and beat FOUR SEEDED PLAYERS on the way to the trophy, including Elise Mertens in straight sets in the semifinal, before taking out the reigning Roland-Garros champion in the final.
The context behind it is what makes this one of the stories of the season. The Paris 2024 Olympic gold medallist and former World No. 4 had elbow surgery in July 2025 and spent more than a year unable to find her level — she fell to World No. 121, needed a wildcard just to enter events, and had to come through QUALIFYING to reach the US Open main draw. There, she produced the comebacks of the tournament: 5-0 down in the decider and match point against her before beating Madison Keys, then 5-0 down AGAIN before beating Iga Swiatek, who led their head-to-head 7-1. She lost to Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. Five weeks later she's a WTA 1000 champion.
The title is expected to lift her back into the world's TOP 30.
In this video: how she beat Andreeva, the significance of the Chinese milestone, the full arc from elbow surgery to Beijing, and what a healthy Zheng Qinwen means for the rest of the tour.

Alexandra Eala vs Han Shi - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Wuhan Open
Show notes
Alexandra Eala vs Han Shi — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FIRST ROUND match at the 2026 Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open, a WTA 1000 in China. Eala is still chasing a first win at this tournament.
Alex Eala is seeded 13th here, but in a 56-player draw only the top eight seeds get a bye — so she starts on Monday night on Dongfeng Voyah Center Court. She arrives from the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where she took BRONZE after losing her semifinal to Wang Xiyu, and before that a chastening second-round exit at the Singapore Open to World No. 180 Tatiana Prozorova from a set and 4-2 up. Still, the season behind her is historic: the FIRST WTA SINGLES TITLE ever won by a player from the Philippines in Washington, a Toronto round of 16, and a US Open third round as the highest-seeded Filipina in Grand Slam history.
Wuhan, though, remains unfinished business. She lost in the first round here in 2024 and missed the main draw entirely last year. She has never won a match at this event.
Han Shi is the kind of opponent who earns respect rather than assumptions. The Chinese player, ranked around World No. 231, came through qualifying in style — beating qualifying top seed Peyton Stearns 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 from a set down, then Kamilla Rakhimova 7-6(2), 6-1. She has only TWO MAIN-DRAW WTA WINS in her entire career, so this is comfortably her biggest week, in front of a home crowd.
They have never played. Eala is the heavy favourite — but she's facing a qualifier with match sharpness, nothing to lose, and a Chinese crowd behind her, which is close to the exact profile of the player who beat her in Singapore. The draw opens up after this: a possible second round against Leylah Fernandez and a third round against Jessica Pegula, with Rybakina, Gauff, Noskova and Anisimova all absent from this year's field.

Carlos Alcaraz CLUTCH In Defense Of Tokyo Title vs Lehecka | Post Match Analysis
Show notes
Carlos Alcaraz has successfully defended his Japan Open title, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4 in Tokyo — his FIRST TROPHY since returning from a four-and-a-half-month wrist injury. Full post-match analysis.
This was a clutch win rather than a comfortable one. Alcaraz came through a first-set tiebreak and then closed it out in straights without ever being allowed to relax, and the numbers tell you where the match was won: he landed 85% OF HIS FIRST-SERVE POINTS and gave Lehecka just ONE BREAK POINT in the entire match. On the biggest points, he was untouchable.
The context is what makes it matter. This is Alcaraz's FIRST ATP TITLE SINCE FEBRUARY. He suffered a wrist injury at the Barcelona Open in mid-April and did not play competitive singles again until the US Open, where he arrived as defending champion with no match practice. He got to the quarterfinals before Ben Shelton dethroned him 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) in a classic that finished at 3:33 A.M. — the latest finish in US Open history.
"I didn't know if I was going to win again this season," he said afterwards. "What a journey since I got injured." That's the honest version of what the last six months have been.
In this video: how the tiebreak was won, the serving numbers behind the performance, where his level sits compared to pre-injury, whether Lehecka was closer than the scoreline suggests, and what this means for the indoor swing and the race to Turin.

- Full breakdown of the Tokyo final
- The serving stats that decided it
- An honest assessment of post-injury Alcaraz
- What this sets up for the rest of 2026
