Beef Cattle News USDA Adds New Regional Cash Cattle Market Report

The USDA launched a new regional cash cattle report aimed at improving price transparency for cattle producers.

On Monday, the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service started publishing a report covering negotiated cash cattle prices in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

The report will combine existing market data, meaning meatpackers will not have to submit any additional information.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says the change will provide producers with more market information while helping address confidentiality concerns.

The move comes as negotiated cash cattle sales have declined significantly. According to the USDA, cash purchases accounted for more than 50% of cattle transactions in 2005, but fell below 18% in 2025.

Negotiated cash prices are important because they help establish benchmarks used in many formula-based cattle contracts.

The new report will be included in the USDA’s afternoon market reports. Producers can find additional information through the USDA Market News website and mobile app.

New World Screwworm Cases Surge in New Mexico and Texas, Triggering Livestock Restrictions

After a relatively quiet period in August and September, New World screwworm cases are increasing again, raising concerns for cattle producers in New Mexico and Texas.

Twelve active livestock cases have been reported during the second half of October, with most in New Mexico. Two additional cases were reported in Hudspeth County, Texas, which borders Mexico to the south and New Mexico to the north.

Since the first cases were reported on June third, Texas and New Mexico have recorded 65 livestock cases, one wildlife case, and one trapped fly case. Fourteen of those cases have been reported in October.

In New Mexico, three recent infections involving a calf and a horse in Grant County and a cow in Otero County have prompted officials to designate large areas along the southern border as infested zones. Ranchers must receive authorization from the state Livestock Board before moving cattle out of these restricted areas.

An elk case reported in Otero County last week is now classified as inactive.

New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on living tissue and can cause serious injuries or death in livestock.

State Veterinarian Samantha Holeck says officials are working with state and federal partners to investigate cases and increase surveillance. She warns that colder weather may slow the parasite's spread, but will not eliminate the threat.

Meanwhile, the USDA is moving forward with a phased reopening of border ports. The Columbus, New Mexico, port is scheduled to resume accepting cattle imports from Mexico on October 26, while the Santa Teresa port is scheduled to resume accepting horse imports on the same date.

The two ports previously handled approximately one-third of U.S. cattle imports before being closed because of screwworm concerns. Federal officials say additional ports could reopen if disease conditions, inspections, and infrastructure support safe trade.

Walmart’s Growing Beef Business Raises Concerns About Rancher Independence

R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard is warning that Walmart’s growing influence in the cattle and beef industries could threaten rancher independence.

Walmart is expanding its reach across the beef supply chain, from cattle genetics and feeding to processing and packaging. The company has partnered with several beef industry businesses and invested in Sustainable Beef, a Nebraska-based processing company. In 2025, Walmart also opened its own beef cutting and packaging facility in Kansas.

Bullard says this expansion raises three major concerns: fewer markets for cattle producers, less competition when setting cattle prices, and more control over how ranchers raise their livestock.

He warns that when producers depend too heavily on one buyer, they can lose bargaining power and the freedom to choose where they sell their cattle.

Bullard acknowledges that new processing facilities can create competition and better opportunities for ranchers. However, he says the industry needs more independent buyers, stronger negotiated cattle markets, and meaningful competition at every stage of beef production.

He is urging federal regulators to examine Walmart’s ownership interests, purchasing agreements, and supplier contracts to ensure competition remains strong and cattle producers maintain control over their businesses.

North Dakota Cattle Broker Pleads Guilty In Agridime Case

A North Dakota cattle broker has pleaded guilty in a case tied to the Agridime cattle fraud investigation.

Taylor Bang of Killdeer pleaded guilty September 9th, 2026 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in federal court in Texas. He is scheduled to be sentenced January 7th, 2027 and could face up to five years in prison, along with fines and restitution.

Following the guilty plea, the North Dakota Department of Agriculture ordered Taylor Bang Cattle Sales to stop all livestock-related sales and revoked Bang’s livestock dealer license.

Bang was one of five people charged in the Agridime investigation. A federal judge ruled in 2024 that Agridime operated as a Ponzi scheme, using money from new investors to pay earlier investors.

The company sold cattle and frozen beef to consumers, but eventually stopped making payments to investors and cattle producers. Court records say Agridime owed investors about 220 million dollars, including an estimated 40 million dollars to North Dakota investors.

Bang has denied knowingly taking part in a Ponzi scheme. Prosecutors allege he helped conceal transactions, falsified cattle records and provided investors with false information.

  2. Combine Genetics, Implants, & Nutrition For Better Calf Gains

    Season 3, Episode 157

Implants Can Lead to Weight Gain In Calves

Beef producers can improve calf performance and profitability by combining strong genetics, proper nutrition, and approved growth implants.

Brandon Nuttelman, a nutritionist with Merck Animal Health, says genetic improvements have helped boost beef quality significantly. Twenty years ago, about half of fed cattle graded Choice, and only three to four percent graded Prime. Today, 75% or more grade Choice, while 10 to 12% grade Prime.

Researchers say implants can help cattle reach their growth potential. Calves receiving an approved implant during the suckling phase average about 23 pounds heavier at weaning than calves that are not implanted. Calves with stronger genetic potential for growth may see even greater benefits.

With implants costing around two dollars, researchers say the added weight can provide a strong return on investment.

However, genetics and implants are only part of the equation. Proper nutrition and good animal health are essential for calves to achieve their full growth potential.

Producers are encouraged to work with their veterinarian or nutritionist to develop an implant program suited to their cattle and production goals.

USDA Proposes Change to Beef and Lamb Import Rules

The USDA is proposing a change to temperature requirements for certain imported beef and lamb products from regions affected by foot-and-mouth disease.

The proposal would lower the minimum maturation temperature for fresh, boneless beef and lamb from 4 degrees Celsius to 2 degrees Celsius. That would bring U.S. requirements in line with international animal health guidelines.

Under current rules, eligible meat must mature for at least 24 hours as part of safeguards designed to prevent animal diseases from entering the United States.

The proposal would keep that 24-hour requirement and all other disease prevention measures in place.

USDA says the change would not expand market access, increase disease risks, or affect current trade volumes. The agency also expects no significant economic impact on small businesses.

The proposal was scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on October 20, with a 60-day public comment period ending December 21.

USDA Reopens Another New Mexico Port for Mexican Cattle

The USDA says the Columbus, New Mexico, port of entry will reopen October 26 for imports of Mexican cattle.

The move follows the reopening of crossings in Douglas, Arizona, and Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Cattle imports have been suspended since May 2025 because of the spread of New World screwworm.

However, the reopening comes as concern grows, with new screwworm cases confirmed in a calf and a horse in southwestern New Mexico. Animal health officials are increasing fly trapping and surveillance to help control the pest.

  6. Brazilian Beef Imports Up From Last Year

Brazilian Beef Exports To The U.S. Surge

According to The Rio Times, Brazilian beef exports to the United States surged 524% in September 2026, reaching $263.5 million compared to $42.2 million a year earlier. Brazil shipped 44,435 metric tons of fresh, chilled and frozen beef to the U.S., up from 7,852 metric tons in September 2025, making the United States the largest buyer of Brazilian beef for the month.

The increase followed President Donald Trump's August 26 proclamation expanding the 2026 U.S. import quota for lean beef trimmings by 300,000 metric tons, with 100,000 metric tons becoming available each month beginning September 1. The additional quota allows countries including Brazil and Paraguay to ship qualifying beef into the U.S. at substantially reduced tariffs, as the administration seeks to lower ground beef prices amid tight domestic cattle supplies.

Through the first nine months of 2026, Brazilian beef exports to the U.S. totaled $1.72 billion, up 82.9% from the same period last year, while shipment volumes climbed from approximately 183,000 to 285,000 metric tons.

Nextgen Cattle Company Helps Families In Folds Of Honor

Ranching and military service are rooted in many of the same values. Every day, ranch families work to provide for others while preserving a way of life built over generations and America's service members make sacrifices to preserve the freedoms that make those opportunities possible. Because of those sacrifices made, we believe in partnering with programs that serve to honor that legacy.

Folds of Honor provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of America's fallen or disabled military service members and first responders. Since its founding, the organization has awarded thousands of scholarships and invested millions into the futures of military families. Education is one of the greatest ways to honor sacrifice by creating opportunity for future generations.

Beef Cattle News Cattle Producers Push Back Against Beef Packers

Hundreds of cattle producers are asking a Minnesota federal judge to reject efforts by JBS, Tyson Foods, Cargill and National Beef to dismiss lawsuits accusing the companies of manipulating cattle and beef prices.

The ranchers filed the cases individually after the court declined to certify their claims as a class-action lawsuit.

The producers allege the packers worked together to limit beef production, pushing beef prices higher while keeping cattle prices lower.

JBS has already agreed to pay 83.5 million dollars to settle claims from cattle producers. Other parts of the broader antitrust case are still pending.

Rising Fuel Costs Create New Challenges For Meat Industry

Rising fuel prices and economic uncertainty are putting more pressure on the meat industry.

Diesel prices surged sharply this year, and economists say fuel costs could remain elevated into 2027, especially as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to impact global oil supplies.

Higher diesel prices are increasing the cost of moving feed, livestock and finished meat products. Meat companies are working to control those expenses through better routing, long-term transportation contracts and more efficient operations.

For the beef industry, the smaller cattle herd is also creating longer trips as packers expand their buying areas to find cattle.

Heavier cattle can add another challenge, since fewer animals may fit on each trailer, potentially requiring additional trips.

Industry leaders say better communication, careful scheduling and new technology, including AI-powered routing, could help reduce transportation costs while maintaining animal welfare and getting products to consumers safely and on time.

    REFERENCE:https://meatingplace.com/in-depth-fuel-prices-add-new-pressure-to-meat-supply-chains/

Beef Cow Herd Could Be Near Cyclical Low

Oklahoma State livestock economist Derrell Peel says there are signs—and plenty of hope—that the U.S. beef cow herd may be reaching the bottom of its seven-year decline.

The July Cattle Report showed the beef cow herd was still down about seven-tenths of one percent from a year ago.

Cow slaughter has dropped sharply since 2022, falling more than 40 percent through 2025 and another 14 percent so far this year. Peel says that means producers are keeping cows longer, but many of those older cows will likely need to be culled soon.

The big question is whether there are enough replacement heifers to rebuild the herd.

Heifer slaughter is down more than 11 percent this year, and the number of replacement heifers has increased. Peel says that could be an early sign that producers are beginning to retain more females.

Still, he expects only a slight increase in the beef cow herd in 2027 at best.

Peel says more significant herd rebuilding could gain momentum after 2027, depending on heifer retention and cow culling.

    REFERENCE:https://meatingplace.com/peel-herd-rebuilding-may-gain-more-momentum-after-2027/

Tight Cattle Supplies Keep Beef Prices Strong

Tight cattle supplies and strong consumer demand continue to support record-high beef prices. The average retail price for fresh beef was $9.63 a pound in July. That’s down from the April high, but still about 5% higher than a year ago and more than 30% above the five-year average.

At the same time, beef production is falling. Through September first, U.S. beef production was down about 5% from last year, or nearly 830 million pounds.

Steer and heifer slaughter are also lower, with heifer slaughter down more than 11%.

That decline suggests producers are holding onto more heifers for breeding—an important step if the industry is going to rebuild the beef cow herd.

The tradeoff is that holding back heifers means fewer cattle for beef production in the short term. But if those heifers become productive cows, they could help increase beef supplies in the years ahead.

Lawsuit Filed Over Odors From Oklahoma Meat Plant

Fayman USA is facing a proposed class-action lawsuit over alleged odors from its meat processing facility in Madill, Oklahoma.

The lawsuit was filed September 24 by nearby residents who claim odors from the plant have interfered with their ability to use and enjoy their properties.

The plaintiffs allege the facility has not done enough to control the odors, despite complaints and previous regulatory actions involving wastewater and odor concerns.

They say the odors have made it difficult to spend time outdoors, cook outside or even open their windows.

The lawsuit seeks damages for loss of property use and enjoyment, as well as alleged reductions in property values.

Fayman USA has not been found liable, and the allegations in the lawsuit have not yet been proven in court.

Georgia Tightens Livestock Rules Over Screwworm Concerns

And finally wrapping up in Georgia where agriculture officials are tightening livestock entry requirements following a confirmed case of New World screwworm in New Mexico.

Under the new rules, warm-blooded animals coming from affected areas of Texas and New Mexico must have an entry permit and a veterinary inspection within seven days before entering Georgia.

New World screwworm is a parasite whose larvae feed on living tissue and can cause serious injury or death in livestock.

Georgia cattle producers say they are taking precautions but are not overly concerned. Farms are reviewing health protocols, checking cattle regularly and using fly-control products to help protect their herds.

The United States eradicated New World screwworm in 1966, but officials remain vigilant to prevent the parasite from becoming established again.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper says the parasite does not pose a threat to the commercial food supply, and consumers can remain confident in the safety of American beef.

  10. ICE Activity Raises Concerns Across Cattle Country & A New Yield Calculator

    Season 3, Episode 153

ICE Activity Raises Concerns Across Cattle Country

Three cattle industry groups are warning that recent immigration enforcement activity in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas is disrupting livestock operations and could lead to higher beef prices.

The Kansas Livestock Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and Texas Cattle Feeders Association say they are monitoring reported ICE activity across the three states.

The groups say they respect federal immigration enforcement, but they also point out that cattle producers, feedyards, dairies, livestock markets and processors depend on a stable workforce to care for animals and keep beef production moving.

The associations say thousands of fed cattle scheduled for processing have been delayed in recent days, creating millions of dollars in lost revenue and added costs.

They also report workforce disruptions at feedyards, processing plants, feed and grain businesses, transportation operations and other rural services.

The groups warn the effects could continue for days or weeks after enforcement operations end.

They are asking federal officials to conduct enforcement in a lawful, orderly and transparent way, while clearly communicating with affected employers and rural communities.

Charolais Association Launches New Yield Calculator

The American-International Charolais Association has launched a new Power of Yield Calculator to show cattle producers the dollar value of red meat yield.

The online tool combines carcass data with current USDA boxed beef values to estimate the value of saleable beef at different carcass weights.

AICA says the calculator helps show how genetics and cutability can impact returns, especially as beef prices and carcass weights increase.

The goal is to help producers look beyond quality grade and consider how many valuable pounds of beef each animal produces.

Beefmaster Cattle Work For South Dakota Rancher

South Dakota ranchers Dan & Jessie Hotchkiss were disappointed in weaning weights and calf health in the fall. After trying several different breeds of bulls on their Angus base cowherd, they decided to try Beefmaster bulls fromISA Beefmasters and have never looked back.

Beefmaster is a breed that was developed in the 1930’s by Tom Lasater in South Texas to maximize economic traits like hardiness, fertility, adaptability, and weight. The breed consists of approximately 50% Brahman, 25% Hereford and 25% Shorthorn.

Beef Cattle News Beef Imports: Facts Behind the 300,000-Metric-Ton Plan

Recent plans to allow up to 300,000 metric tons, or 661 million pounds, of additional beef imports into the U.S. tariff-free have created plenty of attention—and misinformation.

According to Derrell S. Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist, the U.S. has imported beef for decades, mainly to supply lean beef used in ground beef products. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Mexico have been major suppliers, while Brazil has recently grown into the number-two source.

Beef imports are up 12.9 percent so far in 2026, as domestic beef production continues to decline.

About 68 percent of imported beef is lean trimmings used as ingredients in ground beef, especially for fast-food restaurants. Imported beef now makes up an estimated 39 percent of the beef used in ground beef production.

Brazil is expected to benefit the most from the tariff changes. However, experts say the U.S. is unlikely to import the full additional 300,000 metric tons.

The policy may shift where imports come from, with South American countries gaining market share. But the increase in total imports is expected to be smaller than the announced amount.

And when it comes to grocery store ground beef prices, the impact is expected to be limited.

Cattle Prices Rise, But Packer Margins Keep Growing

Cattle prices moved higher last week, but beef packer profits continued to rise.

According to Sterling Marketing’s Beef Profit Tracker, the average packer margin for the week ending September 12 was $177.16 per head. That’s up from $170.76 the previous week.

Steady beef cutout values and a $2-per-head increase in drop credit helped support packer margins. Slaughter was down 21,000 head, mainly because of the Labor Day holiday.

The average five-area direct fed steer price rose to $222.82 per hundredweight, up from $219.04 the week before.

That helped reduce feedlot losses. Feedlots lost an estimated $307.19 per head, compared with nearly $329 the previous week.

Feeder cattle prices also moved higher, gaining nearly $7 per hundredweight the week ending September 11th.

    REFERENCE:https://meatingplace.com/beef-packer-margins-gain-despite-bump-in-cattle-price/

Tyson Reshapes Beef Business as Cattle Supplies Remain Tight

Tyson Foods says its smaller beef processing network will help the company manage tight cattle supplies and prepare for the future.

Chief Financial Officer Curt Calaway recently said cattle herd rebuilding is happening, but more slowly than in some previous cycles.

Tyson has closed or put plants up for sale this year in Illinois, Nebraska, and Washington state. The company is now focused on three major beef plants: Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas.

Tyson also hopes to restore a second processing shift as Mexican cattle gradually move through stocker operations and feedlots.

Calaway says the company is focused on improving plant efficiency, managing product sales, and meeting consumer demand for seasoned, marinated, and case-ready beef products.

He added that more cattle and continued reopening of the Mexican border could help Tyson in the future.

  12. New World Screwworm Update & High Diesel Prices

    Season 3, Episode 152

New Mexico Takes Action After New World Screwworm Detection

New Mexico officials and ranchers are stepping up efforts to deal with New World screwworm after the parasite was found in a horse in Grant County. It’s the state’s second confirmed case this year.

The discovery surprised some cattle producers because Grant County is about 100 miles north of the Mexican border.

Earlier this year, screwworm was also found in a dog in Lea County.

Meanwhile, the Santa Teresa cattle crossing is scheduled to reopen Thursday, after being closed for nearly two years because of screwworm concerns in Mexico.

Before the closure, between 3,000 and 3,500 cattle crossed there each day.

Officials say the shutdowns at Santa Teresa and Columbus have cost New Mexico ranchers billions of dollars in cattle trade.

The USDA is also releasing about 1.8 million sterile flies each week along the border. The goal is to reduce the population of fertile screwworm flies and slow the spread of the pest.

Ranchers say cattle entering through the reopened crossing will go through inspections, treatment, dipping, and other health protocols.

With cooler weather approaching, producers hope conditions will become less favorable for screwworm flies.

If everything goes as planned, the Columbus crossing could reopen in about a month.

For livestock infected with New World screwworm, the FDA has authorized ivermectin as a treatment.

Diesel Prices Put Pressure On Producers

U.S. diesel prices have jumped sharply this year, reaching about $6.29 a gallon in mid-September, up more than 80% since January. The higher prices are adding to costs for farmers, ranchers, and truckers. Some lawmakers are calling for limits on diesel exports, while analysts question how much that would lower prices. Tyson Foods says higher energy costs will also be passed along to customers.

  16. National MCOOL Coalition Launches “Label Our Beef” Petition

Label Our Beef Petition Available for MCOOL

The National MCOOL Coalition is launching a new petition calling on the White House and Congress to restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling, or MCOOL, for beef.

The coalition represents farm and ranch groups, rural organizations, consumers, and other agricultural interests.

The petition is called “Label Our Beef.”

It comes after President Donald Trump temporarily increased the quota for lean beef trimmings by 300-thousand metric tons. That’s more than 660 million pounds of additional beef imports allowed between September first and November 30th.

The move comes as the U.S. is already importing record amounts of beef, and follows an earlier increase in the beef import quota from Argentina.

The MCOOL Coalition says those additional imports make country-of-origin labeling even more important.

Supporters say consumers should be able to tell the difference between beef from cattle born, raised and harvested in the United States, and beef produced somewhere else.

There is also growing support for MCOOL in Congress.

Earlier this month, the Senate Agriculture Committee voted 17-to-6 to advance mandatory country-of-origin labeling as part of the Farm Bill.

The coalition is now asking cattle producers, consumers, and supporters of American agriculture to sign and share the petition.

Farm Action Fund President Joe Maxwell says if Washington is going to allow hundreds of millions more pounds of imported beef into the country, consumers should at least have the right to know where that beef came from.

R-CALF USA President Dave Hyde says MCOOL would give Americans the ability to choose a true product of the USA.

And the Coalition for a Prosperous America says every year Congress fails to restore MCOOL is another loss for American ranchers and consumers.

The message from the coalition is simple: Label our beef, let consumers decide, and let American ranchers compete.

Gelbvieh Cows Rise To The Top

Data from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) shows that Gelbvieh females rank #1 for percent retail product.

The 2025 Across-Breed EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) Table, released by the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) and compiled by geneticists Larry Kuehn and Mark Thallman at the USDA U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), provides key performance benchmarks for the Gelbvieh breed compared to other beef breeds (using Angus as the baseline).

Additionally, historical and cumulative USMARC Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) data highlights several notable performance characteristics of the Gelbvieh breed.

    Key Performance Benchmarks

    • Moderate Mature Size: In USMARC multi-breed evaluations, Gelbvieh stands out for having a significantly reduced and moderate mature cow weight (averaging roughly 145 lbs lighter than the Angus baseline). This moderation helps lower herd maintenance costs, making Gelbvieh females highly efficient feed converters.
    • High Yield & Carcass Retail Product: Historically, Gelbvieh has ranked #1 for percent retail product among major evaluated beef breeds in USMARC progress reports, proving their exceptional carcass yield efficiency.
    • Maternal Performance: Gelbvieh continues to rank in the top tier for average maternal milk ability, combined with reaching puberty at the youngest age and lightest body weight of the major Continental breeds.

2025 USMARC Across-Breed EPD Adjustment Factors for Gelbvieh

To compare a Gelbvieh bull’s EPD directly to an Angus bull, commercial producers use the specific USMARC adjustment factors. The 2025 adjustment factors for Gelbvieh relative to an Angus baseline of 0.0 include:

    • Birth Weight: +2.9 lbs (Gelbvieh maintains the lowest birth weights among the major Continental options)
    • Weaning Weight: -15.5 lbs
    • Yearling Weight: -27.1 lbs
    • Maternal Milk: +8.2 lbs
    • Marbling Score: -0.37
    • Ribeye Area: +0.66 sq. in.
    • Fat Thickness: -0.066 in.
    • Carcass Weight: +1.5 lbs

JBS Executive Met With Trump One Day Before Beef Import Announcement

New reporting is raising questions about the timing of a meeting between a major JBS shareholder and President Donald Trump.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Joesley Batista, a major shareholder in Brazilian meatpacker JBS, met with Trump at the White House on August 20th.

The meeting reportedly included discussions about whether lowering the 26-percent tariff on Brazilian beef could help reduce high U.S. beef prices.

The meeting happened just one day before Trump announced a major expansion of tariff-free beef imports.

On August 21st, Trump announced that up to 300-thousand metric tons of beef, or about 661 million pounds, could enter the U.S. over the next 90 days without the additional tariff.

Trump said the imported beef would be sold at 25 percent below current market prices.

The administration says the move is designed to give consumers some relief from high beef prices while American ranchers rebuild the nation's cattle herd.

    But cattle groups are concerned.

U.S. Cattlemen's Association President Justin Tupper says additional imports could hurt the market signals that are encouraging ranchers to rebuild their herds.

National Cattlemen's Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall also says the policy could trade long-term herd expansion for short-term price relief.

Montana Farmers Union President Walter Schweitzer says the 300-thousand metric tons sounds like a lot, but represents only about 2 percent of annual U.S. beef consumption.

Schweitzer says the bigger concern is how packers and buyers could use the additional supply to pressure cattle prices.

The timing of the Batista meeting has also drawn attention because JBS is one of the four largest beef processors in the United States.

JBS is headquartered in Brazil but has a major presence in the American beef industry.

The reporting does not establish that Batista caused or influenced Trump's decision to expand tariff-free beef imports. The administration had already been looking at ways to increase beef supplies and lower consumer prices.

Meanwhile, Trump has also been criticizing consolidation in the beef packing industry and calling for ranchers to have more opportunities to process their own cattle.

The bigger question for cattle producers is whether increased imports will actually lower prices for consumers — and whether those imports could weaken the market incentives ranchers need to rebuild the American cattle herd.

Ranchers First: USDA Unveils Plan To Rebuild America’s Cattle Herd

On Monday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced a major new effort aimed at rebuilding America’s cattle herd and putting ranchers at the center of the nation’s food supply.

It’s called the Ranchers First Initiative, and USDA says it builds on the Trump Administration’s plan announced last October to strengthen the American beef industry.

The initiative focuses on five major areas.

First — Helping Ranchers Keep More Heifers

USDA is creating a new insurance option called the Beef Retention and National Development, or BRAND, endorsement.

The goal is to make it easier for ranchers to keep heifers for breeding instead of sending them to the feedlot.

The program would provide insurance protection for the economic value of keeping that heifer as part of the breeding herd for up to two years.

Second — Helping Ranchers Recover After Disasters

USDA is expanding the use of the Emergency Conservation Program, or ECP, on certain Grassland Conservation Reserve Program acres.

That means ranchers could use the program to rebuild fences, water systems and other critical infrastructure after wildfires and other natural disasters.

The goal is to get ranches back up and running faster and help protect the nation’s cattle inventory.

Third — Expanding Local and Regional Beef Processing

USDA is expanding its efforts to strengthen smaller, regional beef processors.

A new SPUR Guaranteed Loan Program will help processors expand, create cooperatives and increase processing capacity.

USDA is also creating a Regional Processor Continuity Effort to help small and mid-sized processors stay in business and become more resilient.

The department says nearly 20 percent of current beef processing capacity could become available as the cattle herd grows, creating an opportunity for more American-owned processors and cooperatives.

Fourth — Putting More American Beef in Government Food Programs

USDA says it will prioritize American-raised beef in federal food purchasing.

That could include beef purchased for places such as prisons, hospitals, schools and other government institutions.

The goal is to increase demand for American beef while supporting U.S. ranchers and locally owned processors.

And Fifth — Bringing More New Ranchers Into the Business

USDA says it will expand support for beginning and veteran farmers and ranchers.

New producers can receive help through FSA loans, conservation programs, livestock insurance and other resources.

USDA also plans to work with the Department of War and the Department of Veterans Affairs to help servicemembers transition into careers in agriculture.

Secretary Rollins says the overall goal is simple: rebuild the Great American Beef Herd, strengthen independent ranchers and make sure more American cattle operations can be passed on to the next generation.

Cattle Groups Push Back On Trump Plan To Let Ranchers Process Their Own Beef

Cattle and meat industry groups are pushing back against President Donald Trump’s plan to make it easier for farmers and ranchers to process and sell their own meat.

Trump says the idea is designed to reduce the power of the country’s largest beef processors.

In a social media post Friday, August 28 Trump said he has directed legal documents to be prepared that would give farmers and ranchers more freedom to process their own livestock.

But the details of the plan are still unclear.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says USDA plans to announce changes that could include removing outdated regulations, waiving some requirements and making it easier for ranchers to sell meat across state lines.

The administration may also provide more support for small meat processors.

But the Meat Institute says ranchers already have several options, including custom processing and state or federally inspected facilities.

The group warns that allowing uninspected meat to be sold commercially could put food safety and consumer confidence at risk.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association agrees, saying weakening federal meat inspection standards is not the answer.

The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association is also opposing the idea.

The group says producers can already process animals for their own use, but generally cannot sell uninspected meat commercially.

Their message is simple: food safety is not red tape, and consumer confidence is not optional.

Trump’s proposal comes just one week after his announcement allowing an additional 300-thousand metric tons of imported grinding beef into the United States without the additional tariff.

Cattle groups have opposed that move as well, saying more imported beef could pressure cattle prices and discourage ranchers from rebuilding the U.S. herd.

Trump says both policies are aimed at lowering beef prices for consumers while helping American ranchers.

North Dakota Meat Processor Up For Sale After More Than 50 Years

A long-time North Dakota meat processor is up for sale.

M and W Beef Packers in Mandan has been in business for more than 50 years, and the three current owners are now retiring.

The company was founded in 1974 by Wesley and Vita Moore and has operated continuously ever since.

The sale includes the company, a 7-thousand-square-foot USDA-inspected processing plant, a separate garage and shop, and all of the equipment.

And despite the owners’ decision to retire, the business has been growing.

Revenue more than doubled over a three-year period through 2024, reaching 4-point-4 million dollars.

The company reported an annual growth rate of more than 20 percent during that time, with gross margins near 24 percent.

M and W processes and supplies beef, pork, lamb and bison to restaurants, hotels, grocery stores and institutional customers.

Its products are distributed through major companies including Cash-Way, Sysco and US Foods.

The company also produces its own Dakota Trails brand of seasonings, which are sold at more than 13 regional retail locations.

M and W Beef Packers has been an independent meat processor serving ranchers and customers across the Northern Plains for more than five decades.

Now, with the current owners retiring, the future of this long-standing Mandan business is up for grabs.

  18. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins Supports Trump’s Beef Import Plan

Trump Beef Import Plan Gets Support From Agriculture Secretary

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is backing President Trump’s plan to increase beef imports into the United States by temporarily suspending tariffs.

Rollins made the comments during a visit to Nebraska, one of the nation’s leading cattle-producing states.

Speaking at an invite-only federal issues forum with Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts, Rollins said President Trump is looking for ways to make food more affordable for American consumers.

The plan would allow up to 300,000 metric tons of beef to enter the U.S. tariff-free, with much of that beef expected to come from Brazil.

Rollins says that amount works out to less than two pounds of beef per American.

She also defended the policy by saying food prices in the United States remain relatively low compared to other countries.

Rollins’ support marks a change from earlier this year.

Back in May, the Trump administration considered suspending beef tariffs for 200 days. Reports at the time indicated Rollins pushed back on that proposal, and the plan was eventually halted.

Now, Rollins is supporting the expanded import plan, even as several cattle organizations and some members of Congress oppose it.

Rollins has also defended President Trump’s broader trade policies, saying the current system is fundamentally broken and does not work for American farmers, ranchers, and agriculture.

President Trump Announces 300,000 Metric Tons To Enter The U.S.

In his statement last Friday, President Trump highlighted a 90-day agreement aimed at reducing ground beef prices, citing a significant increase in costs and a reduction in the American beef herd during the Biden administration. The plan involves importing up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef without out-of-quota tariffs, with a commitment that this product will be sold at 25 percent below current market rates. He framed the deal as a measure to lower costs for consumers while supporting the rebuilding of the domestic beef herd.

Producer, rancher, business owner, former president of the North Dakota Farm Bureau, and radio host Daryl Lies shares his thoughts by breaking down what this could mean for the U.S. cattle producer.

  20. U.S.-Mexico Livestock Border Reopens

Mexican Cattle Once Again Enter The United States

The U.S.-Mexico border is officially back open for livestock imports, marking the first reopening in more than a year.

On Monday, Mexican cattle were allowed into the United States through the Douglas, Arizona, port of entry.

Two additional ports in New Mexico are expected to reopen over the next two months, assuming the New World screwworm situation does not worsen. But for now, reopening livestock ports along the Texas-Mexico border is not on the table.

USDA closed the border in November of 2024 after screwworm reappeared in southern Mexico. A limited reopening was attempted in February of 2025, but imports were halted again in May as the pest moved rapidly north.

The closure has been a major blow to Mexico's cattle industry. Before the screwworm crisis, the U.S. imported roughly 1.1 million head of cattle from Mexico each year, accounting for about five percent of total U.S. slaughter.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the phased reopening is moving forward based on science and data, with measures in place to protect the U.S. cattle herd.

The Douglas port opened Monday. Columbus and Santa Teresa, New Mexico, are expected to follow, with one opening in about 30 days and the other 30 days after that.

Rollins says Texas ports will remain closed for now because that's where the most screwworm activity is being seen.

Only two active cases remained in Texas as of Monday, although additional cases have been reported since the pest was first confirmed in South Texas in June.

Early cattle volumes are expected to be limited. However, reopening the New Mexico ports could bring more significant numbers of Mexican cattle into the U.S. by this fall.

And don't expect many of those cattle to head directly to U.S. packing plants. Historically, fed cattle have made up four percent or less of Mexican imports, meaning the impact on fed cattle supplies may not be felt until sometime in 2027.
