RAW impressions with Lou Barlow and Adelle Barlow

Lou's on tour and he and Adelle talk about things that have been difficult while they've been apart. Adelle's grief over the passing of her mother deepens and Lou's mysterious hearing loss frustrates him. On the upside, Lou discusses Dinosaur Jr's steady evolution and Adelle is finding a way forward.

The Barlow Family General Store is open for in-person biz on Saturdays (and sometimes Fridays and Sundays!) at 22 Chapman St. Greenfield, MA. Open on-line all-the-time.. get your handwritten lyrics, big-ass knit caps, a curated selection crafting tools and more!

Fresh off opening for Turnstile with Dinosaur Jr, Lou plays True Hardcore from Sebadoh's The Freed Man L.P. . The opening, opening band for Turnstile: Fiddlehead, asked Lou to play True Hardcore before they played. So, Lou opened for the opening openers -then- opened with J and Murph, amazing! Adelle and Lou talk about Lou being hit by a shopping cart (on purpose?) at an empty grocery store. Oh, then Lou plays a cover of Reject by First-Wave-Hardcore band The Necros.

The Barlow Family General Store will be open 12-5 on Sunday October 4th. Lou will be there if you wanna geek out and/or shoot the shit. 44 Chapman St. Greenfield MA 01301.

This tiny tunes tuesday is immediately derailed, for no good reason, by ringworm talk. Lou manages to play two songs: Perfect Way and Lazy MInd before the ringworm talk starts anew. Then Lou unveils some exciting news about Sebadoh and Sub Pop records and he and 4-Track Man do a commercial related to this exciting news. Exciting!

Adelle urgently needs to share her RAW impressions of the arts’n’crafts’n’vegetables exhibit inside the round house at the Franklin County Fair. Lou responds by playing slapdash fragments of Tom Petty songs. Both of them ponder what to do with all the left over beer from Lou’s August 8th birthday party.

On his Western Canada tour earlier this year, Lou realized he had to cover both sides of Alice Bowie’s (Cheech and Chong) 1974 single Earache My Eye/Turn That Thing Down. In this episode Lou follows through and tries to explain it all to Adelle.

Awake after weeks of being unplugged, 4-Track Man interrupts Lou and Adelle constantly as they try (and fail) to recap Lou's 60th birthday SHOW/PARTY. Hear a podcast fan's version of Lou's birthday song (for Lou!), niece Aleksa Atkinson's stunning version of Velvet Underground's Stephanie Says, and Adelle and Lou delivering HBD wishes (plus song) for a 15 year old in Texas.

From the RAW archives, 4-Track Man consolidates 3 classic RAW shows for one glorious hour devoted to Lou's slavish re-creations of his 3 most-favorite novelty songs of the 1970's. The Streak, Convoy and Kung Fu Fighting! Lou non-ironically considers these among his greatest achievements. This put him in a great mood for these 3 shows and he and Adelle's conversations before and after are simply delightful. A wonderful introduction to the RAW Impressions podcast if 4-Track Man says so himself.

The best way to support the ongoing podcasting, live event, retail store juggernaut that is Barlow Family General is to shop our store. Lou does bespoke lyric art, sells hard-to-find vinyl from his bands and Adelle has curated a super cute/functional selection of home goods, gifts and a dwindling selection of her own knitwear (get it before it's all gone)! Everything we sell that's not us is from indie DIY creators like ourselves.

What's this? An interview? Why yes, it's a proper interview. How unusual for this RAWcast! Lou and Adelle have the pleasure of chatting with Melissa Auf der Maur about her new 90's rock memoir "Even the Good Girls Will Cry".

As a tribute to this analog Queen, Lou does a cassette enhanced re-creation of a pivotal passage from the book: a fight between her friend Bruce (later of Godspeed You Black Emperor) and her 'grungefather' Billy Corgan.

P.S. the book is great! (for real)

Lou and Adelle just got back from Adelle’s mom’s memorial/celebration of life in Wisconsin and can’t find their way in front of the microphones yet. In the meantime please to enjoy this, from April 23, 2023, RAW Impressions 24! Featuring Lou’s stunning medley of Wrigley’s gum commercials and a whole lotta dirty talk, this one is RAWer than most.

Here's the original Substack post (free for everyone!) with the original commercials synched to the medley PLUS chords and lyrics for anyone crazy enough to recreate it! Why not? Be a hero at your next Gen X gathering!
