  1. Breaking Generational Curses with Brooke Warren

    Season 3, Episode 32

    Show notes

What if breaking generational curses starts with asking your grown kids what you got wrong?

Pastor Ken sits down with his daughter Brooke Warren, now serving in ministry herself, and asks her to grade how he and Rachel did raising five kids. She talks about the sleepover rule, no dating until 18, the faith she watched them live at home, and the spilled cups at dinner that turned into a hard conversation years later. Pastor Ken talks about the pattern he learned from his own father, the apology that changed things between them, and the grade Brooke finally gives them.

This week: dads, ask your kids one honest question. Did I do something wrong?

  2. Losing a Child and Still Trusting God with Eric Thiede

    Season 3, Episode 31

    Show notes

How do you keep trusting God after losing a child, when the miracle you prayed for doesn't come?

Pastor Ken sits down with his nephew Eric Thiede, associate pastor and worship leader at Motor City Church in Detroit. Eric and his wife Bri were expecting twin boys when everything changed, and their son Pearson passed away shortly after birth. Eric talks about the night it happened, naming Pearson, the anger he had to work through, and why he says American Christianity is comfort, but true Christianity is surrender.

This week: if you know a parent who has lost a child, you don't need the right words. Sit with them. That is how Jesus sits with us.

  3. Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

    Season 3, Episode 30

    Show notes

Why do bad things happen to good people? And when life doesn't make sense, where is God?

Pastor Ken and Pastor Todd open one of the hardest questions people ever ask about God, and Pastor Ken walks it through Job, Joseph and Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus. Suffering is not always punishment, God can bring good out of something He never called good, and His silence doesn't mean He's absent. It picks up from last week's conversation on grief with Ann Kita.

This week: be honest with God about your pain, and make sure nobody you love has to suffer alone.

    Scripture: Matthew 5꞉45 · John 16꞉33 · Job 1꞉1 · Job 42꞉5 · Romans 8꞉28 · Genesis 50꞉20 · Psalm 13꞉1 · John 11꞉35 · Romans 8꞉38-39

    12:46 Faithful and still hurting

13:41 Does everything happen for a reason?

15:43 Good from what He never called good

16:41 Joseph: you meant it for harm

  4. How to Help Someone Grieving with Ann Kita and Susan Arnould

    Season 3, Episode 29

    Show notes

How do you help someone grieving when you don't know what to say? And who walks with you once everyone else goes back to normal?

Pastor Ken sits down with Ann Kita, Executive Director of New Hope Center for Grief Support in Northville, and Susan Arnould, Director of Operations and Program Services. New Hope's grief support is free and peer-to-peer, led by trained volunteers who have walked in similar shoes. They talk about why trying to fix grief doesn't help, why it's OK to sit in the silence and say a loved one's name, and why there's no timetable on grief.

This week: grief isn't weakness. Grief says that somebody mattered. If you know someone who lost a person months or years ago, reach out and ask about them.

  5. How to Deal with Toxic Family | Parenting 101, Part 5

    Season 3, Episode 28

    Show notes

How do you deal with toxic family as a Christian, when a grandparent, sibling or in-law keeps crossing the line with you and your kids?

Pastor Ken and his wife Rachel close out Parenting 101 with questions from a parent in our church. Not everyone who frustrates you is toxic, so look at the pattern. Forgiveness and access are not the same thing, a boundary isn't punishment, and guilt doesn't get to run your home.

This week: boundaries and love don't have to be enemies. Sometimes a healthy boundary is one expression of love.

This is the final part of Parenting 101. The whole series is in the Parenting 101 playlist.

If anyone is in danger, safety comes first. Reach out to a professional or the proper authorities.
