  1. FALL: Major Jackson > Apple Parsnip Soup

    Season 1, Episode 1

    Show notes

Our podcast journey starts with soup, as many good journeys do. Most people might know Major Jackson for his poetry (he’s authored six books), as the former host of The Slowdown podcast, as a professor at Vanderbilt, or one of the other illustrious fellowships or hats he’s worn. What they might not know (until now!): Major Jackson’s obsessed with soup. He brings that enthusiasm to A Bowl of Goodness, a collection of food poems and recipes—all about soup.

We discuss his Apple-Parsnip Soup in the podcast and he describes it on the page as “the hit from a menu of three soups at an informal gathering.” Indeed, it will make your kitchen smell all kinds of cozy and a sip of it might make you want to click your heels twice. Parsnip never had it so good!

  2. Welcome to Recipe Journal

You know the adage, “I never use a recipe?” Well, sometimes I do. I’ve written about how a recipe is a song, meant to be followed as written. The dirty secret no one talks about is how MANY times a recipe is tested and tried before it’s ready to be shared. There’s a story in that… and now a podcast that explores the how’s and why’s. one composed by a particular person with their particular proclivities. I’m curious about those details—and maybe you are too.

Go behind-the-scenes with cookbook authors, culinary professionals, cooking enthusiasts and more for snackbite-sized episodes of how recipes come together into their final form. Think of it as a deep dive on the details—a behind-the-music of recipe writing—a chance to hear from the recipe composer on how and why they made the choices they did to get the recipe print-ready.

I’m Annelies Zijderveld, a cooking teacher for 10+ years and Steeped Recipes cookbook author. I read cookbooks like novels (and then cook from them).

Think of the podcast as an amplified cooking experience for you at home: listen to the writer for recipe details and then prepare the recipe with a better sense of how it works and a better connection to the human who crafted the recipe.

Listen to the podcast before you cook (as an extended head note?) or while your dish is simmering (as a moment to pause and exult in the thing you made that you share with the person who made it for you!).

Then, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and share with friends looking for fresh inspiration, interested in getting out of a cooking rut, or to deepen their cooking experience. (You could even cook the same dish and swap pix with your friend). Thanks for your support. I relish being in community with you!

I’m glad you’re here. Now, let’s get cooking!
