Remember What's Next
History is the lens. The present is the question. The future is what's at stake.
Remember What's Next brings you the conversations our people need right now. Each week, Rabbi Ken Spiro — author, researcher, and lecturer — joins Jewish educator and coach Ellie Bass to take a current issue and trace it back through Jewish history, uncovering the patterns, the precedents, and the deeper meaning hiding in plain sight.
Because we've been here before. And remembering how we got here is how we figure out what comes next. Support the work: https://ko-fi.com/rememberwhatsnext

S6 Ep2 - Abraham the Start Up
Season 6, Episode 2
Show notes
Welcome to Season 6 of Remember What’s Next with Ellie Bass and Rabbi Ken Spiro, and this season we’re exploring the people who shaped Jewish history—who they were, the choices they made, and what we can learn from them about our own lives and the future we’re building.
Today, we’re beginning with Avraham, a man willing to question the world he inherited and imagine a different way to live. His journey invites us to explore something that has become a recurring theme in Jewish history: the courage to challenge accepted thinking, take responsibility, and bring something new into the world.
What connects Avraham’s willingness to step into the unknown with generations of Jewish innovators, thinkers, and changemakers? How does being rooted in an ancient tradition inspire us to create something new? And what might following in his footsteps look like in our own lives? Let’s get into it.

As Winston Churchill said, "The farther back you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see." That's exactly what we're doing — going all the way back, so we can understand the present and shape what comes next.

S6 Ep1 - King Saul and Suicidal Empathy
Season 6, Episode 1
Show notes
Welcome to Season 6 of Remember What’s Next, with Ellie Bass and Rabbi Ken Spiro.
This season, we’re exploring Jewish history through the people who shaped it: who they were, the choices they made, and how their influence continues to shape our lives as Jews today.
We’re beginning with Shaul, King Saul, Israel’s first king, whose story raises difficult questions about leadership, compassion, and moral courage. How could the same man who spared Agag, the king of Amalek, later order the killing of the priests of Nov? What shaped his judgment—and what can we learn from those contradictions?
We’ll also explore the idea of “suicidal empathy”: when compassion, disconnected from judgment and responsibility, ends up enabling harm. How do we distinguish mercy from misplaced sympathy? When does humility become a fear of standing firm? And how do we recognize when our own emotions are clouding our sense of what is right?
Join us as we get to know Shaul—and consider what his story asks of us today.

Trauma & Jewish History Part 3 - From Survival to Resilience
Season 5, Episode 17
Show notes
The final episode of our special series. Rabbi Ken Spiro, Professor Elan Javanfard, and Ellie Bass unpack how Ashkenazi and Sephardi/Mizrahi communities developed radically different responses to centuries of trauma — and how those responses still shape Jewish observance, identity, and reactivity today.
In the wake of October 7th, those differences matter more than ever. This conversation explores why Ashkenazi Judaism became fear-based and perfectionistic while Sephardi/Mizrahi Judaism remained attachment-based and warm, what each tradition gets right, and what an integrated, resilient Jewish future could look like.
Three components of Jewish resilience. Two wounds. One people. Listen now.
Welcome to a special three-part series of Remember What's Next called Jewish History and Trauma. Ellie Bass and Rabbi Ken Spiro are in conversation with Professor Elan Javanfard who is a researcher and expert in Jewish intergenerational trauma. Together, we are going to trace the full arc: where our collective wounds come from, how they live in us today especially now and what healing might actually look like going forward.

Part 2 of Jewish History and Trauma - In this episode Rabbi Spiro and Professor Elan Javanfard explore the chronological and psychological history and experiences of Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews and how their past has shaped and created those communities into the way we know them today. Season 5, Episode 15
Show notes
Part 1: Welcome to a special three-part series of Remember What's Next called Jewish History and Trauma.
This first episode in a special series examines how historical trauma shapes Jewish identity, focusing specifically on Ashkenazi Jews. The conversation establishes foundational concepts of trauma (capital T vs. lowercase t, individual vs. communal, intergenerational vs. multigenerational) and traces how 1,000 years of European persecution created distinctive psychological and behavioral patterns in Ashkenazi communities—including emotional restraint, hyper-achievement orientation, dark humor as coping mechanism, and somatization of distress.

S5 Ep13 - Tracing Our Genetic Story: From Judea to the Jewish People Today
Season 5, Episode 13
Show notes
What does our DNA reveal about who we are as a people? In this episode of Remember What's Next, we explore the genetic history of the Jewish people and what it teaches us about our shared origins, our journey through history, and the family-turned-nation we've become.
We begin where it all began: in the Levant. The genetic evidence is clear — all Jews trace back to Judea, with roots firmly planted in the land of our ancestors. From there, we follow the threads of our story outward, examining how exile and survival shaped not only our culture and traditions, but our very biology.
We trace the Ashkenazi journey through the Rhineland, the Sephardic experience in Spain and Morocco, and the long, rich history of Mizrahi communities across the Middle East and North Africa. We look at how being enslaved and dispersed by the Roman Empire scattered our family across continents, and how centuries of life in different lands left their mark on visible traits like skin tone, eye color, and hair — even as our core genetic identity remained remarkably intact.
This is a story of one family that became a nation, a nation that endured exile, and a people whose genetic memory still carries the fingerprints of Judea after thousands of years. Join us as we connect the science to the soul of our shared Jewish story.
