  2. More Heat Pump Does Not Mean More Heat

    Episode 94

    Show notes

Heat pumps work, but badly designed and oversized installations can leave homeowners facing appalling comfort, reliability and energy bills.

JT Stewart returns to join me for a frank transatlantic discussion about America’s heat pump industry. Why are heating systems routinely oversized? Why are installers still relying on outdated rules of thumb? And how can a homeowner receive a $2,000 electricity bill after supposedly upgrading to efficient technology?

  7. UK vs USA: Who Has Made the Bigger Heat Pump Mess?

    Episode 89

    Show notes

Heat pumps work. So why do so many installations fail?

Mars is joined by JT Stewart from Slipstream for a revealing transatlantic investigation into heat pumps in Britain and the United States.

Although the two countries use the technology very differently, homeowners on both sides of the Atlantic are being hit by familiar problems: oversized systems, poor design, inadequate training and sales processes that can put profit before performance.

Britain has largely embraced air-to-water heat pumps. America is dominated by air-to-air and ducted systems. But does either country genuinely install them well?

Mars also examines how these failures compare with the problems uncovered in his book, Britain’s Heat Pump Shitshow.

  9. Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme About to Face the Axe?

    Episode 87

    Show notes

The UK has a new government, a new Energy Secretary and a fresh opportunity to reshape the future of domestic heating.

But will the latest policy changes actually make heat pumps more affordable, more reliable and more attractive to homeowners?

In this episode of the award-winning Homeowners’ Q&A Podcast, Mars speaks with Charlotte Lee, Chief Executive of HPA UK, about what the new government could mean for heat pumps, home electrification and the wider renewable heating sector.

The conversation examines the removal of VAT from household electricity and asks whether this first intervention goes far enough to address the long-standing price imbalance between electricity and gas.

Charlotte also discusses the future of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the £7,500 and £9,000 grants currently available to eligible homeowners and whether the scheme could become vulnerable as the government reprioritises spending.

  11. Why Are So Many Heat Pumps Failing Homeowners?

    Episode 85

    Show notes

Are poor heat pump installations being blamed on the technology when the real failure begins at the design desk?

In this episode of the award-winning Homeowners’ Q&A podcast, Mars is joined by heating engineer and design consultant Rob Berridge for a blunt examination of what thousands of homeowner complaints reveal about Britain’s heat pump rollout.

They explore why some homes remain cold after installation, why high electricity bills can often be traced back to weak hydronic design and why room-by-room heat-loss calculations are only the beginning of a competent system design.

Rob explains the importance of system water volume, emitter sizing, flow rates, index circuits and low-temperature operation – and argues that too many installations rely on buffer tanks as a substitute for proper engineering.

  12. Did Your Installer Actually Commission Your Heat Pump Properly?

    Episode 84

    Show notes

Most homeowners spend weeks researching which heat pump to buy. But what if the machine itself isn’t the biggest factor determining comfort, efficiency and running costs?

In this episode of the award-winning Homeowners’ Q&A Podcast, we're joined by Liam Knowles from The Heating People to investigate one of the most overlooked stages of a heat pump installation: commissioning.

We explore what proper commissioning should actually involve, why so many heat pumps are left running at fixed flow temperatures, how weather compensation should be configured and why simply getting the radiators hot is not proof that a heating system has been commissioned correctly.

Are cheap heat pump installations storing up problems for homeowners? As more companies promise faster, cheaper and “minimal disruption” heat pump installations, many homeowners are left wondering what they’re really giving up in return for a lower upfront price.

In this episode of the award-winning Homeowners’ Q&A Podcast, we're joined by Sean Hogan from Aventus Eco to examine one of the biggest debates in the UK heat pump industry. Can you really install a heat pump without upgrading radiators? Is keeping your existing cylinder a sensible compromise? Are higher flow temperatures a false economy? And what happens when electricity tariffs change?

  14. Are We Letting Undertrained Heat Pump Installers Loose On Homeowners?

    Episode 82

    Show notes

Why do some heat pump systems deliver outstanding performance while others leave homeowners frustrated, cold and facing higher energy bills?

In this episode of the Homeowners’ Q&A Podcast, we sit down with Mark Hall to tackle one of the biggest challenges facing the UK heat pump market: installer competency.

From three-day training courses and heat loss calculations to radiator sizing, buffer tanks, weather compensation and system commissioning, Mark explains why heat pumps require a very different skillset to traditional boiler installations.

Mark also explains why achieving a SCOP of 4.0+ isn’t difficult when systems are designed correctly and why many of the UK’s underperforming systems can be traced back to basic design and commissioning errors rather than problems with the heat pump itself.

  15. Why Does Every New Heat Pump Come with an Unreadable & Useless Controller?

    Episode 81

    Show notes

Your heat pump's controller might be the dumbest piece of tech in your house. In this episode of the Homeowners' Q&A Podcast, we sit down with Graham Hendra, now working as a heat pump developer at Haier, who has just returned from meetings in China where the question of controller intelligence was front and centre. He's candid about what the industry is getting wrong, why heat pump uptake in the UK remains stubbornly low and what a genuinely smart heating system might look like in five years' time.

  17. Has the Heat Pump Industry Given Up on Telling the Truth?

    Episode 79

    Show notes

The heat pump industry has a marketing problem. And it's not just the big energy companies getting their adverts banned by the ASA... it's happening in installer proposals, manufacturer brochures and kitchen table conversations every single day.

In this episode of Homeowners' Q&A, we sit down with Simon Wardle of Ultimate Renewable Supplies for a frank conversation about the misleading claims that are leaving homeowners cold, confused and out of pocket.

    Topics covered:

→ The kW badge: why the number on the side of your heat pump is almost always a best-case figure measured at conditions that rarely exist in a British winter

→ "Your radiators will be fine": how zero and minimal disruption installs are creating a new generation of homeowners with rooms that never come to temperature

→ Buffer tanks: why they're still being slung in as standard, what they're actually costing you in efficiency and when they're genuinely needed versus when they're a sticking plaster for poor design

→ "Cheaper to run than gas": the electricity-to-gas price ratio and whether this claim can ever be made honestly

→ Warranties: why homeowners routinely don't know if they're covered for two years or ten... and whose fault that actually is

  19. Can You Install a Heat Pump Before Insulating Properly?

    Episode 77

    Show notes

In this episode we challenge one of the biggest assumptions in the UK retrofit and heat pump space: Should insulation always come first, or is ‘fabric fifth’ actually more realistic (and better) for the average home?

Natasha Ackroyd, Rhiannon de Wreede, Danny Murphy, Richard Burrows & Graeme Ross take an unfiltered look at the realities homeowners face: budgets, sequencing, installer messaging, risk, disruptive works, real-world constraints and whether the industry is giving people useful advice.
