The Secret Life of the American Teenager Rewatch — Season 2, Episode 12: “Be My, Be My Baby”

This week, babies arrive, teenagers propose marriage, and everyone needs therapy. Unfortunately, Ricky's now bringing Adrian to his.

We open at Adrian's new house, formerly George's bachelor pad and now apparently Ricky's second office. Adrian wants love and commitment. Ricky fears she's ruining the only two things he enjoys: sex and therapy. Dr. Fields is updating his hourly rate.

Next door, George turns his backyard into an unsolicited relationship-advice clinic. Ricky, Ben, and Griffin rotate through like patients at a walk-in centre. George offers marriage wisdom despite a track record of “multiple system failures.” Even Leave It to Beaver gets dragged into this.

At Purity Culture Headquarters, Grace is outraged that Kathleen has a new man, whom we're officially calling Sexy Jewish Daddy or Jewish Jeff (regardless, he is so so so hot). He's a gynecologist! Naturally, this leads to another family seminar on sex, periods, pregnancy, and whether anyone has heard of PRIVACY.

Grace threatens to have sex out of spite, while Jack makes his case for certain extracurricular activities. The Lord must be exhausted.

Meanwhile, Ricky and Adrian finally make it to therapy, where Adrian reveals the heartbreaking story of Antonio, her first love, who died of cancer. A rare moment of emotional depth! Naturally, the writers pivot back to Ricky's commitment issues and whether Ben would make a better father to John. Emotional whiplash is covered by insurance.

Speaking of Ben, Amy has discovered a new housing strategy: propose marriage, move into the Sausage King's mansion, and maybe consider having sex someday. Ben, World's Least Self-Aware Boyfriend, responds by asking his daddy for permission. Romance is waiting for Leo to approve the paperwork.

Leo says NO. Betty, however, suggests Ben simply sleep with Amy to “level the playing field.” These are the adults giving advice, people. Also, Betty's missing ex has been found at the bottom of the East River. Wedding bells!

Back at the Juergens house, Ashley and Amy negotiate a suspiciously easy truce just in time for Molly Ringwald to GO INTO LABOUR. At home. In bed. With George offering to deliver the baby using ONE HAND because he's still in a sling.

Remember Moose, the dog who couldn't call 911 last episode? Apparently the actual humans aren't much better at securing emergency assistance.

And baby Robbie is born! No hospital, no mess, no obstetrician. Another normal Tuesday in imaginary California.

Meanwhile, Grace and Jack break up, Strawberry Shortcake is immediately interested, and Deadeyes has opinions about exactly what went wrong. Tom is having phone sex with Tammy when Sexy Jewish Daddy drops by to casually announce plans to marry Kathleen. Why does every conversation in this show take place at maximum inappropriateness?

And Ben? He's now considering BREAKING UP with Amy, approximately eleven seconds after entertaining the idea of marrying her. Meanwhile, Ricky tells Adrian he loves her, and George wonders whether baby Robbie is even his.

✨ Final verdict: One surprise home birth. Two terrible marriage plans. Three generations discussing sex. Zero adults qualified to supervise this situation.

And somehow, George Juergens might STILL be the most responsible person in the room.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager Rewatch — Season 2, Episode 11: “Cramped”

This week everyone is moving house, moving on, or moving into somebody else’s business. And somehow, despite all this movement, absolutely nothing happens.

George announces the Juergens family is moving back under one roof. How heartwarming! Except Ashley is getting a newly renovated garage bedroom, and Amy is FURIOUS.

Apparently, giving birth to John also entitled Amy to first dibs on every square foot of real estate in the greater Juergens metropolitan area. She reacts like Ashley has personally stolen her inheritance.

Meanwhile, Molly Ringwald is pregnant, bedridden, and reconsidering her relationship with Moose, the dog who failed out of guide dog school. When someone arrives to collect him, she changes her mind and suggests Moose call 911.

Ma’am, that dog couldn’t pass guide dog school. What makes you think he’s qualified to dispatch emergency services?

Across town, Adrian attempts something revolutionary: establishing boundaries with Ricky. She wants a relationship built on respect. Ricky announces he loves her, then ignores her heartfelt speech while checking his phone.

    Therapy is clearly going wonderfully.

Meanwhile, the Sausage King is deeply uncomfortable with his wife Betty actually moving in. Betty decides to lighten her load by hosting a yard sale, and OH MY GOD, WHAT A YARD SALE.

It’s less Antiques Roadshow and more The Real Housewives of Craigslist. Betty unloads a lifetime of questionable possessions, including a dental chair that somehow ends up in Ben’s bedroom.

    Yes. A dental chair.

We have questions. We do not want answers.

Back at Purity Culture Headquarters, Grace announces she’s never having sex again while simultaneously inviting Jack into her bedroom to discuss temptation.

Because naturally, the best place to avoid temptation is directly beside it.

When Grace gets her period, Jack heads to the drugstore, where he discovers the scandal of the century: Kathleen Bowman buying condoms with a handsome mystery man.

    KATHLEEN?!

Apparently, Molly Ringwald isn’t the only mother rediscovering romance.

The mystery man is Jeff, a doctor whose brother is connected to Marshall’s death. Nothing says promising relationship like an incredibly complicated introduction to your grieving family.

Grace is horrified her mother might be moving on, which is rich coming from someone whose entire personality revolves around her own romantic decisions.

Meanwhile, Ashley makes the catastrophic mistake of asking Ricky to take her furniture shopping.

George reacts as though Ricky has invited Ashley to join an international trafficking ring. Amy is equally outraged, because Ricky can father her child but absolutely cannot be trusted near an IKEA showroom with her sister.

Ricky later returns to Adrian, where their disagreement escalates into an uncomfortable confrontation. Adrian wants space; Ricky refuses to accept it. Dr. Fields deserves hazard pay.

Meanwhile, Ben asks the Sausage King whether Amy can move in.

    Leo says absolutely not.

Probably because his house is already occupied by a new wife, her yard-sale leftovers, and an inexplicable dental chair.

Then Ben receives a mysterious call from Italy. Will he finally get a storyline that doesn’t involve complaining about Amy?

    We can only hope.

And somehow, the most interesting character is a dog who couldn’t graduate from school.

    RECAP:

Season 2, Episode 10: “Knocked Up, Who’s There?”

This week, Secret Life briefly remembers it is allegedly a show about teen pregnancy — but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of masturbation, church-based sexual tension and Amy behaving like she personally invented motherhood.

We open with Ben being approached by New Pregnant Girl (NPG aka: Heather), a new pregnant girl who has apparently studied his résumé and concluded: this man LOVES single mothers.

Heather has been kicked out by her parents, lives alone, and thinks Amy and Ricky will inevitably end up together, so she offers Ben “a good time.” Amy conveniently walks up mid-conversation and is immediately furious.

And just like that, Amy suddenly wants to GO OUT WITH BEN.

Nothing reignites passion like discovering another woman may want your boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Grace has decided she and Jack should speak to a church teen group about ABSTINENCE.

Jack is horrified because this means admitting they regret having sex. Grace is then even MORE horrified to learn Jack recently masturbated — once, he claims — purely to make sure everything still worked after Tom nailed him in the groin with a football.

    Sure, Jan.

    Grace tries recruiting Ashley:

Grace: Come to my Teen Abstinence Group.
Ashley: “I have a group of my own. Teens Against Groups.”

    Ashley remains undefeated.

At home, Molly Ringwald has been put on bedrest, sending George into DEFCON 1. Amy announces she’s going out anyway because apparently living rent-free with a baby has convinced her she is a 42-year-old divorcée.

    George responds by grounding EVERYONE.

Deadeyes arrives to babysit John, hears George said no, and leaves. Ben arrives. George throws him out too.

Then George introduces the family’s newest member: Moose, a failed guide dog who later somehow gets involved in calling 911 for Anne. Great use of emergency services.

Over at church, Grace performs her abstinence masterpiece: a poem called “I’m Sorry Jesus.”

    It bombs.

Tom tells her she isn’t funny. Tammy BOOS HER. Teenagers heckle her. Ricky eventually stands up and demands everyone respect Grace.

Afterward, Jack tells Grace she doesn’t actually regret having sex.

    Grace apologizes to Jesus.

Grace and Jack then immediately start heavily making out.

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, ABSTINENCE CLUB.

Adrian is also deeply affected by Grace’s speech, which is impressive considering she insisted she and Ricky have sex BEFORE attending it.

She asks Ricky whether they actually have a future. Ricky announces he plans to be a BACHELOR FOR LIFE, because sixteen-year-old Ricky is apparently George Clooney circa 1997.

Adrian finally realizes she wants sex to mean something and decides she should see other people.

    Honestly? Growth.

But the episode’s surprisingly serious storyline belongs to Heather. Ben visits her and learns she’s terrified: the father disappeared, her parents kicked her out, and she’s facing childbirth alone.

Amy eventually visits too, opens with the reassuring news that labor is basically death, but then does something unusually kind: she offers to be there when Heather gives birth if nobody else will.

    Heather starts asking about adoption.

And suddenly, buried beneath Grace apologizing to Jesus for having sex and Moose apparently operating emergency services, Secret Life remembers that being a pregnant teenager might actually be frightening.

Elsewhere, Ashley is attracting boys, Griffin is functioning as her gay Secret Service detail, Strawberry Shortcake continues hovering suspiciously around Jack and Grace, and Ben is somehow being treated as one of Grant High’s most desirable men.

The greatest fantasy this show has ever attempted.

Final score: 4/10 — don’t fuck without protection. We love you Rumer Willis

    Season 2, Episode 8

    Show notes

This week, everyone in Grant High is either stalking someone, accusing someone of having sex, trying to buy a house to improve their stalking capabilities, or discussing the romantic future of Molly Ringwald like she’s a distressed property.

George and Skipper kick things off by squaring off over Molly Ringwald’s pregnancy. George wants his family back; Skipper insists he can still live happily ever after with Anne, despite apparently never bonding with either of her daughters. Truly irresistible stuff.

Meanwhile, Adrian has decided George’s house would be the PERFECT family home, primarily because it offers unparalleled sightlines directly into Ricky’s life. Reuben points out that “proximity to your teenage daughter’s boyfriend” has limited resale value, but eventually agrees to take a look.

Across the street, Amy is interrogating Ricky about the question currently consuming her entire existence: DID BEN HAVE SEX IN BOLOGNA? Ricky suggests she simply have sex with Ben herself. Amy explains that she doesn’t actually want sex — she just needs to know whether Ben has already had it. Healthy.

Amy also learns Ricky stayed over repeatedly during the summer, George starts wondering whether Amy and Ricky are secretly banging, and Ashley casually points out that Amy nearly leaves the house without John. Motherhood is going GREAT.

At school, Ricky attempts to confess his cheating to Adrian, but Adrian basically says, “If you cheated on me, we’d be over, so please never tell me anything.” Problem solved.

Ben, meanwhile, unveils his exciting new relationship strategy: cribbage. He wants it to become his and Amy’s lifelong pastime. Amy later chooses cribbage over making out with him, proving that Ben has somehow found something less sexually exciting than Ben.

Grace discovers Jack spent the summer hanging out with Strawberry Shortcake through the Dead Parents Club and immediately becomes jealous. She later INVITES Strawberry Shortcake over to prove she isn’t jealous, while Jack and SS exchange approximately seventeen suspicious looks. Nothing to see here!

Ashley and Griffin, meanwhile, maintain their “no dating in high school” pact while random boys hit on both of them. Honestly, considering every relationship on this show ends in pregnancy, adultery or a dead parent, this remains the smartest storyline.

Skipper and Molly Ringwald finally break up. He graciously tells her she can come back once she realizes George sucks, mentions that he never really bonded with her children anyway, and gives her Amy’s promised SUV as compensation for unpaid labour. Romance!

Adrian then visits Ricky’s Sex Attic and proposes that maybe they both stop sleeping with other people. Ricky responds with perhaps the most honest line ever spoken on this series:

“Adrian, we’re in high school. And I’m… me.”

Finally, Amy arrives to collect John and discovers ADRIAN HOLDING HER BABY.

Amy reacts as though Adrian has kidnapped John and joined an international trafficking ring, bans her from touching him, bans Ricky from having him, and — most importantly — declares Adrian’s family may NOT buy George’s house.

    Adrian smiles.

    George already accepted their offer.

So next week Amy may have Ricky’s girlfriend living directly across the street.

A new kind of green indeed.

  9. S02E05 Born Free

    Season 2, Episode 5

    Show notes

The episode opens with Amy in the kitchen practicing Italian, because despite the increasingly obvious problem of who exactly is going to take care of her infant for a month, she remains committed to this European vacation.

Ashley walks in and casually announces that Molly Ringwald and Skipper are engaged. Amy is stunned, and when Molly Ringwald appears, she immediately confronts her. Molly clarifies that Skipper proposed, but she hasn’t actually said yes yet because apparently even she realizes that accepting a marriage proposal immediately after being accused of lying about her baby’s paternity and gold-digging might require some reflection.

At school, Grace makes the catastrophic mistake of telling Adrian about George’s fake vasectomy. Adrian is delighted, because this means Molly Ringwald’s baby could actually be George’s and, in Adrian’s mind, perhaps George will reunite with her. She also tells Grace that her family is looking for a new house.

Grace specifically tells Adrian not to tell anyone.

Naturally, approximately twelve seconds later, the entire school knows.

Deadeyes tells Strawberry Shortcake she heard about George from her brother. Strawberry Shortcake is shocked and wants to know who told him. Meanwhile, Ben hears it from Alice and Henry, who apparently got it from Jack.

Congratulations to Adrian on keeping that secret for roughly one passing period.

Amy, meanwhile, is eating with Strawberry Shortcake and Deadeyes when they start suspiciously asking questions about her family. Amy quickly realizes something is up, and the girls scatter before admitting what they know.

Elsewhere, Strawberry Shortcake approaches Grace and tells her that her own mother died, so she understands some of what Grace is going through. It’s actually a surprisingly sincere moment, and Grace invites her to sit with her and Jack.

Then we return to Amy and Ben, because sincerity can only survive for so long at Grant High.

Betty arrives to bring Ben his lunch, and after she walks away Amy remarks that Betty looks like a hooker.

Which is a lovely thing to say about the woman currently delivering food to your boyfriend.

Ben then decides he can’t keep the vasectomy gossip from Amy any longer and tells her that George apparently never had the procedure.

So now Amy gets to contemplate the possibility that Molly Ringwald is pregnant with George’s baby while she’s trying to arrange an Italian vacation from her own baby.

Meanwhile, Ricky asks the Sausage King how many hours he can work at the butcher shop because he’s looking for an apartment. The Sausage King reveals that there’s actually a space available above the butcher shop and offers it to him.

Finally, Molly Ringwald is with Skipper, who has apparently moved on from “Will you marry me?” to planning their entire future. He tells her that he wants to buy a house where the two of them can live together.

    Just the two of them.

    Without Amy.

    And without John.

So Skipper would like to marry a pregnant woman with two teenage daughters and a grandson — provided none of those family members actually come with her.

At this point, Molly Ringwald might want to hold off on that RSVP.

  10. S02E04 Ciao

    Season 2, Episode 4

    Show notes

    We're BACK!

And, so is this hot mess.

The episode opens with Amy and Anne exhausted in the kitchen after baby John has apparently decided that sleep is for people without consequences.

Meanwhile, Ben apologizes to his dad for yelling at him and is rewarded not only with his job back at the butcher shop, but with the news that he can spend the summer working in Italy. Naturally, Ben’s first thought is, “Can I bring my teenage girlfriend and her infant?” His dad gently suggests that maybe Ben should use the trip to think about his own future instead. Ben agrees… and then immediately calls Adrian for relationship advice, because that has historically gone so well. Adrian tells him he’d be an idiot to leave Amy alone in America with Ricky, announces that she hates him, and hangs up. Helpful!

Grace, meanwhile, decides she’s ready to return to school after her dad’s death. Unfortunately, Grant High welcomes her back in the only way it knows how: with absolutely no boundaries whatsoever. Everyone offers condolences, but then somehow the conversation turns into people telling Grace about losing their virginity. One girl even reveals that her cat died after she had sex for the first time, which is perhaps the most Secret Life sentence ever written.

Adrian approaches Grace to apologize for not calling, but Grace gets upset and leaves. Amy asks Adrian what happened, and instead of answering, Adrian casually drops the information that Ben is leaving for Italy.

Amy confronts Ben, and while trying to explain the trip, Ben accidentally suggests that maybe she could come too. Amy immediately says yes. Ben, shocked that his bluff has been called, asks what she’d do with John. Amy basically says, “Eh, my parents can keep him,” because apparently motherhood now has a summer vacation option.

Grace walks home upset until George spots her, pulls over, and gives her an unexpectedly sweet pep talk. She returns to school, reunites with Jack, and just like that, the show has decided they’re together again.

Elsewhere, Adrian and Ricky have sex, after which Ricky says he wants them to be exclusive. Adrian’s main condition is that Ricky not sleep with Amy. Ricky assures her he isn’t planning to — although he does need to go to Amy’s house constantly because, minor detail, they have a baby together.

Back at the Juergens house, Amy begins desperately searching for someone willing to raise John for a month while she vacations in Italy. Anne says no. Ashley says no. George says no. Ricky arrives, takes John from George, and before Amy can even finish forming the question, tells her that he absolutely cannot watch their baby for an entire month while she goes to Europe.

So Amy’s Italian summer fantasy may be experiencing some minor childcare-related turbulence.

And finally, Anne is hanging out with David when he accuses her of lying about him being the father of her baby and suggests she’s only dating him because his family is rich. Anne understandably gets furious — but before she can respond, David decides that this is the ideal emotional atmosphere in which to get down on one knee and propose.

Because nothing says “marry me” quite like, “I think you’re lying to me about the paternity of your unborn child and possibly using me for money.”

    Season 2, Episode 2

    Show notes

    This episode, tl;dr:

What if literally everyone blamed sex for things that are objectively unrelated

    --

We pick up immediately after Sexy Christian Dad's death (Rob: "RIP to the hottest guy on this show"; Sarah, "Eww") , and the Bowman house has officially entered its "everyone copes in the least healthy way possible" era.

Grace has locked herself in her room, convinced that having sex somehow caused a plane crash, because this show will never miss an opportunity to crank purity culture up to eleven.

Tom doesn't exactly help matters. He greets Adrian by announcing that Grace killed SCD... and Adrian helped because she made sex look "too fun and too HOT."

Sir... that's not how aviation works.

Meanwhile, Kathleen asks George to identify SCD's body, proving that despite their incredibly messy history, George really does show up when it matters. It's one of those rare moments where he isn't spreading gossip or making everyone's life worse.

Over at the Juergens house, Amy wants to visit Grace but needs someone to watch baby John. Ben volunteers.

    Amy says no.

Ben hears "absolutely not" and somehow translates it as, "Show up anyway."

While Amy's gone, Sausage King casually proposes to Jennifer Coolige in the front seat of his car. JC says yes... but then casually mentions one tiny detail:

    She's still married.

Across town, Skipper proposes to Anne because apparently everyone on this show processes unexpected pregnancies by immediately suggesting marriage. Anne isn't exactly swept off her feet, mostly because she's wondering whether Skipper loves her or just feels obligated because she's pregnant.

At the Bowman house, Anne arrives just in time to find George rubbing Kathleen's back.

To be fair, he is comforting a grieving widow.

To Anne... it looks like George's timing is suspiciously convenient.

Meanwhile, Amy tries to comfort Grace, who responds by declaring that baby John is basically divine punishment for Amy having sex.

Nothing says "thanks for visiting" like insulting someone's newborn. Love Grace's villain era. AND FAIR ENOUGH!!!

Back home, Amy discovers Ben has wandered next door looking for diapers because he left John with Leo and Betty.

    Yes.

The newly engaged butcher and his technically-still-married fiancée are now babysitting.

    What could possibly go wrong?

Ben then chooses this exact moment to complain that Amy isn't paying enough attention to him.

    She's raising a newborn.

    Read. The. Room.

Elsewhere, Ashley asks George the question we've all been screaming at the TV:

"Did you actually get a vasectomy?"

George insists he did... while acting so suspicious that even the audience starts checking his medical records.

Meanwhile, Ricky and Adrian sneak off for some quality time in the car before Sexy Bald Ruben interrupts them like the world's most awkward neighbourhood watch volunteer. Surprisingly, instead of threatening Ricky, Ruben actually has a mature conversation about boundaries and promises Adrian he'll get them a proper house.

This may be the single healthiest conversation in the entire episode.

    Which is saying something.

The episode ends on an especially heartbreaking note.

Grace tells Jack she doesn't love him anymore and vows she'll never have sex again, convinced she's being punished for it.

Jack is left sitting alone outside with a beer, wondering how his life unraveled so spectacularly in the space of 48 hours.

    ✨ Final score:

    Rob: -1

    Ashley: -1

    Sarah: -2

  13. S02E01 The Big One

    Season 2, Episode 1

    Show notes

"What if there was... another pregnancy?"

Amy catches Anne hiding a pregnancy test like she's a teenager sneaking cigarettes, and before you know it, Anne is expecting. George immediately goes into full Law & Order: Vasectomy Unit, insisting the baby can't possibly be his because he had "the procedure." Poor Skippy has barely learned Anne's last name and suddenly he's being treated like the prime suspect on Maury.

Meanwhile, Amy is discovering that newborns are less like adorable dolls and more like tiny, screaming dictators. Baby John cries constantly, Amy hasn't slept in approximately seventeen years, and Ben somehow decides this is the perfect time to complain that their relationship isn't progressing fast enough.

    Read the room, Be.

In one of the season's most unexpected twists, Ricky keeps wandering into the house and... being useful? He cooks dinner, calms John down in seconds, and generally behaves like someone who accidentally wandered in from a completely different, much more responsible TV show.

Ashley, meanwhile, continues to be the show's greatest detective. Leo introduces his glamorous new girlfriend, and Ashley takes one look before basically saying, "Isn't that the escort Tom hired?" Ashley could solve cold cases if anyone let her.

George spends the episode proving that if information exists, he will share it with the worst possible person at the worst possible moment. Skippy learns Anne is pregnant thanks to George's inability to mind his own business, immediately panics, and copes by drinking enough to make every decision dramatically worse.

Over on Team Teen Drama, Grace is convinced she's making a mature adult decision, Adrian is convinced she's making a terrible mistake, and Ricky somehow finds himself giving one of the episode's most emotionally honest speeches—this time ripping into Ruben for abandoning Adrian years ago. It's always jarring when Ricky briefly becomes the wisest person in the room.

Ben and Ricky continue their eternal rivalry, except now it's less "Who gets Amy?" and more "Who can financially support a baby?" It's basically The Apprentice: Teen Dad Edition.

Just when you think the episode is wrapping up with the usual mix of jealousy, awkward family dinners, and George Juergens creating fresh chaos...

...the show drops an absolute bomb.

Sexy Christain Dad... Rob's favorite smug, hairy chested, BABE of the CENTURY who I would convert to any religion for ... DIES in a plane crash.

This is a dark, dark day in for this podcast. Please hold Rob in your thoughts.

    WE MADE IT!!!

It's the last episode of Season 1!! We did it! Woo woo!

After an entire season of speeches about abstinence, pregnancy, adoption, putting the baby in Mimsie's drawer, love triangles, fake marriages, fake IDs, and approximately 14 million conversations in the school hallway, the moment finally arrives:

    Amy goes into labor.

Suddenly every single person she's ever spoken to appears at the hospital, because apparently Grant Memorial Hospital has no visitor limits and absolutely no privacy policy. Thank you for the sweet Best Western Conference Centre Labour and Delivery Suite, a la Sausage King.

Ben and Ricky, having spent the season competing over Amy like she's the last Xbox on Black Friday, decide to call a temporary truce. They agree to be civil for the baby's sake.

Meanwhile, Adrian arrives to support Ricky, only for Grace to casually announce she's getting back together with Jack. Ricky's love life officially flatlines. Dun dun dunnnn

After what feels like three feature films' worth of labor, Amy finally gives birth to a healthy baby boy: John.

Everyone takes turns holding the baby and immediately starts acting like parenthood is beautiful, magical, and completely manageable.

Cut to approximately five minutes later...

Amy gets home and discovers that newborns don't care if you're the main character. She's exhausted.
    She's overwhelmed.

Meanwhile, Ricky visits John and, in one of the biggest surprises of the season, realizes he actually likes being a dad. Time for Good Guy Eyes in overdrive.

And just when you think the drama is winding down, George and Ashley reveal they've moved out, leaving Anne standing in the family home wondering how her entire life changed in the space of one pregnancy.

Sigh, and in all honesty, I am SAVORING this season because, in early Season 2, someone will die... DUN DUN DUN.

Rob will be seen in a room crying.

Hopefully that will entice you to keep listening and keep watching Secret Life.

    Season 1, Episode 20

    Show notes

Sorry for delay!! I was on vacation and should have brought my laptop with me!!

Anne heads to another interview—this time with David (but since he was in SATC, his name is now SKIPPER), the architect from the hot dog stand who clearly wants to date her. George, threatened by the horrifying concept of his ex-wife moving on, launches a campaign of pure misinformation, telling Anne that David is gay, hard of hearing, and somehow injured during a figure skating accident.

Because Anne apparently left all critical thinking the store where she bought that fab airline attendant outfit, she walks into the interview screaming about her personal life and aggressively proving what an ally she is to the gay community.

    David: 👁️👄👁️ (me too, diva)

Shockingly, despite what can only be described as a professional hostage situation, David still thinks Anne has good ideas. Standards are low in this town.

Meanwhile, Leo (aka the Sausage King) decides Ben desperately needs a personality transplant via manual labor and ships him off to work at the butcher shop. Ben protests because rich-boy suffering is hard.

But wait! Leo also offers Ricky a job, and Ricky immediately sees this for what it is: an opportunity to finally stop being emotionally manipulative and become financially manipulative.

Now that Ricky has money and a steady job, Ben’s favorite argument—“I can provide for Amy better than you”—suddenly collapses faster than Amy’s original adoption plan.

At school, Amy is having one of her patented sad hallway walks because George forgot to pick her up. (He was too busy secretly shopping for a post-divorce bachelor house.) Lauren and Madison offer a ride if she agrees to mall time, Adrian and Grace offer emotional support, but Amy chooses the classic teen pregnancy coping strategy: wandering around alone looking tragic.

Eventually she ends up in a baby store, where a sweet employee gifts her tiny overalls, triggering a full existential crisis because she’s supposedly still giving the baby up. This show really said: What if hormones but devastating?

    Back at the butcher shop:

    • Ricky? Good guy™ eyes in overdrive
    • Ben? Being absolutely humbled by Bunny (MIMI from the Drew Cary Show), the terrifying manager who sees through rich-boy nonsense immediately.

For the first time ever, Ben realizes Ricky may actually have a competitive edge and unfortunately, that edge is work ethic.

Meanwhile, Jack confronts little criminal mastermind Duncan about the fake mugging and stolen truck situation. Duncan’s tiny-man intimidation tactics continue, but Jack somehow still insists on mentoring him while dating his sister. Choices!

At home, Amy catches George and Ashley watching her emotional video for the baby while Ashley mocks it like a Gen Z reaction channel. Amy understandably loses it, because maybe don’t roast your pregnant sister’s goodbye tape??

Over in Adult Romance Land™, Anne gives David another shot after realizing George completely lied about literally everything. David confirms:

    • Not gay ❌
    • Not deaf ❌
    • Very interested in Anne ✅

He kisses her mid-interview (HR violation king), offers her a job, and asks her to dinner.

Anne Juergens hive: we are so back.

But the emotional centerpiece of the episode is Amy finally starting to believe she might actually keep the baby. And suddenly—miracle of miracles—everyone becomes useful:

    • Grace & Jack secure daycare through the church
    • Ricky & Ben both get jobs to support the baby
    • Adrian offers her condo for the baby shower (growth?)
    • Her friends rally around her like an ABC Family finale montage

Even Anne eventually comes around, and for the first time in forever, Amy starts to imagine a future where she keeps the baby.

  19. S01E019 Money For Nothing, Chicks For Free

    Season 1, Episode 19

    Show notes

Move over Dire Straits and the title/song reference: it's time to really party.... with Secret Life! Woo ya.

At the Juergens house, it’s business as usual: Anne is serving divorced woman in a power blazer, George is pretending the divorce is just a fun misunderstanding, Amy is passionately unemployed (she has a sausage empire as a dowry), and Ashley has once again vanished without anyone sounding the alarm.

Turns out Ashley’s off hanging with mysterious new boy Thomas, who drops two bombshells: he’s homeschooled, and he’s 13 years old. It's giving Simon from 7th Heaven.

Meanwhile, Anne secures jobs for both herself and Amy at the Hot Dog Hut, proving once again that if you want something done, Anne will reluctantly do it herself while everyone around her spirals.

Over in Purity Culture Central™, Grace decides Adrian should become a born-again virgin, because apparently virginity now operates like a software reset. First: a pink cardigan makeover. Then: a field trip to Reverend Stone, who gently suggests Adrian should maybe ask God for forgiveness if she’s serious about reclaiming her ✨virtue✨.

Adrian absolutely entertains this idea—not for spiritual reasons, but because she’s trying to seduce her stepbrother Max through emotional wholesomeness? This show really said boundaries are optional.

Meanwhile, Ben finally figures out the one thing Ricky fears more than feelings: financial responsibility. Ben is a total Chad for like 0.2 seconds. Hooray!

At Adrian’s house, Ricky attempts one last seduction, only to be thwarted by Max arriving with a literal teddy bear and healthy emotional communication.

    And then… a shocking development:

    Someone flirts with Anne Juergens.

An architect named David [Skipper!! From SATC!!!] gives Anne a job lead and his phone number, and suddenly she’s glowing in a way George absolutely cannot handle. After a full episode of denial, George realizes—oh no—Anne might actually move on.

  20. S01E018 Making Up Is Hard To Do

    Season 1, Episode 18

    Show notes

icky returns to therapy and proudly informs Dr. Fields that he’s grown as a person™, learned to love himself, and has a fresh new obsession: Amy. Unfortunately, Ricky’s definition of “personal growth” includes sabotaging the adoption process so he can swoop in emotionally. Dr. Fields watches this trainwreck unfold in real time and probably mentally updates his retirement plans.

Meanwhile, Amy is busy crying over Ben to—of all people—George, who briefly stops antagonizing Anne long enough to cosplay as an emotionally available father. Anne’s mysteriously dressed up for what everyone assumes is a job interview, Amy wants to skip school because heartbreak is hard, and Ashley quietly vanishes without anyone noticing because, apparently, this family can only focus on one teenage crisis at a time.

Ashley is eventually found at a bus stop with a cute boy named Thomas, who is clearly flirting. But Ashley has bigger priorities: damage control. Specifically, convincing Ben to stop being dramatic and get back with Amy before Ricky slithers in with his emotionally manipulative “I’ve changed” routine.

Over at school, Grace accidentally causes what can only be described as a birth control scandal. After Kathleen finds condoms and assumes Grace is preparing for full moral collapse, she gives her birth control pills. Grace gets weirdly excited by this—less because of sex and more because the concept of consequences feels spiritually important to her—and somehow the entire school finds out she has the pill. Suddenly, every teenage boy is acting like she opened applications.

Plot twist: Grace still wants to wait until marriage. She just enjoys the vibes of responsibility.

Meanwhile, Adrian—shockingly—is not sleeping with anyone for once. Instead, Ricky gives her a hallway speech dripping in emotional confusion, while Adrian gets pursued by her stepbrother Max (yes, we’re all uncomfortable). But Max turns out to be weirdly wholesome: flowers, dinner, romance, and—most shocking of all—he doesn’t want sex immediately. Adrian is so baffled by basic respect that when Ricky later calls? She ignores him.

And then—brace yourselves—Grace ignores Ricky too.

Ricky, suddenly discovering what rejection feels like, is having a rough evening.

    Elsewhere:

    • Jack tries to romance Shawna but instead gets threatened by her tiny mafia-boss younger brother.
    • Anne’s “job interview” is actually a secret mission to stop Ricky from torpedoing the adoption.
    • Dr. Fields ethically says nothing while also saying everything.

At the adoption meeting, Ricky trauma-dumps so hard about his messed-up childhood that Donovan and Leon suddenly decide: Actually… maybe we want our foster kids back instead. Which means Amy’s carefully planned adoption implodes in spectacular fashion.

But wait—there’s hope! Ben shows up at Amy’s house, emotions are had, tears are shed, and after approximately fourteen misunderstandings and one emotional breakdown, Amy admits she still loves him. She even considers keeping the baby.
