Episode 509

Dora Molnar shared about her life journey and the work being done as a Neuro-Habilitation Specialist at the Kia Kaha Neuro-Habilitation Foundation which she set up. We start off with her childhood though and learn more about her journey and what brought her to New Zealand. It was really interesting to learn more about the work that is done to support children and since I helped her set up as a charity it was nice to hear the full background as well.

Katharine Watson on the Christchurch Archaeology Project
Episode 508
Show notes
Katharine Watson was my latest guest for a conversation that went rambling all over through a City and its past, present and future!
This was a fascinating journey into the past but to start we also discussed Katharine's own life journey as well as her founding of The Christchurch Archaelogy Project.
What is it that might lie beneath us underneath the streets that we walk or the houses we live in? The Christchurch earthquakes accelerated a period of exploration here and so we talk about that and what has been found.
This is one of more than 500 conversation so if you enjoy it check out more at https://www.theseeds.nz

Marketing 4 Business: Conversation with Scott Wilson on his podcast
Episode 504
Show notes
This is the audio of a conversation I had as a guest on Scott Wilson's podcast called Marketing 4 Business (which is here).
Here is the description of the episode from Scott
He left a career doing billion-dollar corporate deals in London, Tokyo and Sydney to ask small business owners one simple question: what's your purpose? In this Marketing 4 Business episode, Scott chats with Steve Moe, corporate lawyer at Perry Field Lawyers and host of the Seeds podcast (closing in on 500 episodes), about why purpose can't just live in a slogan, it needs to live in your legal documents. From reinventing his career after a decade overseas to helping charities and founders raise funding, Steve shares insights grounded in real client work. He covers: • Why your business purpose needs to be written into your legal documents, not just your marketing • The 3-bullet-point test Steve gives every founder to nail their real "why" • Why loans from family and friends are often the riskiest way to fund a startup • The New Zealand "number 8 wire" mindset that quietly caps how far a business can grow • Why nature could legally hold shares in a company, and how NZ law already makes this possible • The "gracious no" habit that protects your time without burning bridges • Why "work-life balance" is the wrong goal, and what to aim for instead • The regret-test question Steve uses before every big life decision If you're a business owner trying to get clear on your purpose, build a team that isn't limited by you, or figure out how to fund your next stage of growth, this episode is well worth your time. Volunteers! When you are doing it all ... in discussion with Abby Golden and Chris Joseph for Community Governance Aotearoa
Episode 501
Show notes
This session I facilitated a panel considering volunteer organisations which was put on by Community Governance Aotearoa. I am grateful to Rose and Alice and the team there for letting me put up the audio of the session on Seeds Podcast as well.
Volunteer boards (sports clubs, waka ama, arts groups and more) are the backbone of Aotearoa's not-for-profit sector. When there's no paid staff, committees and boards often juggle governance and operations, everything from managing subscriptions to compliance and community engagement.
This talk is for anyone asking: How do we do it all and still lead well?
Practical, actionable, and designed for community governance leaders.
Our panelists for this talk were:
Steven Moe – Partner at Parry Field Lawyers, specialising in social enterprises, not for profits
Abby Golden – Co-founder at Te Ara Tīrama Charitable Trust
Chris Joseph – Executive Director at Volunteer Kāpiti

Panel discussing changes for Charities on Donation Tax Credits with Jenny Gill, Robyn Scott, Sue Barker, Craig Fisher and Steven Moe
Episode 496
Show notes
In this episode we hear from Jenny Gill, Robyn Scott, Sue Barker, Craig Fisher and Steven Moe about recently announced changes on donation tax credits. Here is the cover email with more info that was sent out with video link:
Thanks to all who joined Jenny Gill, Robyn Scott, Craig Fisher, Sue Barker and I for the webinar on charities and the cap on donation tax credits. Whether you were able to join us live or not, we wanted to make sure you have access to everything that was shared and discussed.
You can watch the full recording of the webinar here: https://youtu.be/DRO5iGt1N0Q
Feel free to forward this on to someone who might be interested.
The following are some resources shared during the webinar: • Philanthropy NZ letter to ministers signed by over 60 individuals and organisations – attached • CID Letter to Ministers on the Proposed Cap to Donations Tax Credit – attached • PHD Thesis on Government Financial Support for the Charitable Sector in New Zealand, referenced by IRD – view here • Paper by Dr Juliet Chevalier-Watts and Steven Moe on charities, tax, and the missing analysis – view here • Article by Sue Barker on Donations tax credits - whose money is it anyway? – view here • Paper from Parry Field Lawyers and webinar recoding on all changes for charities in Budget 2026 (including the positive ones!) – view here
Next Steps As a panel, we will regroup to consider the most strategic path forward. In the meantime, here is how you can get involved: • Write to your local Member of Parliament or the relevant ministers to share your concerns and the reasons behind them • If you have had any direct responses from ministers regarding this issue, please share that information with Robyn Scott at Philanthropy NZ, who is acting as a central point of contact • If you would like to add your name to the open letter to ministers, please reach out to Philanthropy NZ directly • Share the webinar recording link with your networks to raise awareness across the sector • Consider how we could start being more proactive as a sector about both research and policy preparation (if that strikes a chord let me know) to move away from being reactive all the time. • Look out for further information from IRD, who indicated they will be releasing additional papers behind the decision-making process in July 2026 • Continue to explore ways any charities you are involved with can raise general awareness of their value to society
A further webinar may be scheduled once more information is available. We will keep you updated.
