160: Bonus Episode: Mimi, Where Are You? Missing Women and the Ghost Stories We Tell
Show notes
Before they were ghost stories, they were women. In this Halloween bonus episode, Aimee and Vanessa revisit three missing persons cases whose unsolved disappearances became urban legends and ghost stories. In 1953, Evelyn Hartley vanished while babysitting in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and her case echoes one of America’s most famous legends, “the calls are coming from inside the house.” In 1946, Bennington College student Paula Welden set out toward Vermont’s Long Trail and never came back, becoming the face of the so-called Bennington Triangle. And in 1949, Mimi Boomhower disappeared from her hilltop home in Bel-Air which later became known as one of the most haunted houses in Los Angeles. For each, we tell the real story first: who she was, what happened, and what we actually know. Then we look at the legends that grew up around her: what they kept, what they erased, and why stories of missing women so often turn into warnings to women about being alone.Hear each full story in our feed:🕯️ Evelyn Hartley: Episode 107🕯️ Paula Welden: Episode 75🕯️ Mimi Boomhower: Episode 63➡️ Help bring attention to missing and unidentified women—subscribe and share this episode.

Pamela Butler: The Security Footage & The Search for Answers
Show notes
“If something happens to me, don’t give up until you find out what happened," Pamela Butler told her brother. He could never have guessed he would need to do just that.
In February 2009, Pamela Butler, a 47-year-old IT specialist in Washington D.C., disappeared from her home. Pamela was security-minded and her home security system would capture details critical to her case, details such as her new boyfriend entering and returning to her home repeatedly in the days between her last known interaction and her family realizing she was missing.
Despite this evidence, Pamela's case would languish, passing from one detective to the next, until years later, a name buried in the case file would change the direction of the investigation and raise disturbing questions about another woman whose disappearance had never been fully explained. 📍 Washington, D.C. | February 12, 2009

More about Jami Rice:
A Southern California native, Jami lives in the Los Angeles area with her husband, three children, and two dogs. As a pre-teen, Jami read books about serial killers and followed true crime cases on tv. In 2017, she was the jury foreman on a first degree murder trial in Los Angeles County. Shortly after that trial concluded, Jami launched MURDERISH podcast as she wanted to share true crime cases with like-minded people. Her very first episode was a recounting of her experience being a juror on a murder trial.
Voted “Class Clown” in school, Jami was the kid in school who often had her seat moved to the front of the class because she “talked too much.” Not much has changed, and through MURDERISH Jami now has a vehicle and an outlet to tell fascinating true crime stories to people without getting into trouble for talking too much.
Every other Monday, Jami releases a new episode of MURDERISH where she gives listeners a 3D look at fascinating true crime cases. Jami tells these stories with the empathy victims deserve. In each episode, she walks you through the victim and perpetrator’s background, how their worlds collided, details of the crime, and what went down during trial.
Jami’s professional background includes an 18 year career in commercial real estate financing. In 2018, she ditched her corporate gig and joined her husband in operating their Landscape construction and design company. When she’s not telling true crime stories, Jami is working alongside her husband to transform outdoor spaces and argue over who is the boss. Jami also enjoys going camping with her family, coffee, good conversation, binging on HGTV and Bravo, riding on the back of her husband’s motorcycle, karaoke, laughing, and making people laugh.

156: Jami Hagel Sherer: When Domestic Violence Becomes A Disappearance
Show notes
In 1986, 22-year-old Jami Hagel met Steven Sherer at a bar in Redmond, Washington. He was charming, persistent, and was soon sending her a dozen roses. Within months, the relationship that started with romance would become something far more frightening.
Steven controlled where Jami went, who she saw, and how often she could be away from him. As Jami became increasingly isolated from her friends and family, the confident and outgoing young woman they knew began to disappear.
To many, Jami's life seemed successful: she was building a career and Microsoft, started a family with Steve, and purchased their first home. But those who knew her well, knew she was looking for a way out. But leaving Steve would never be as simple as walking out the door. There were threats of violence, financial complication, a child to protect, and the growing fear that he would never let her go.
But by the fall of 1990, Jami was ready to make plans for a life without him. She was ready to tell him she wanted a divorce. So she stepped out the front door of her parents' house to tell him, and she was never seen again. 📍 Redmond, Washington | September 30, 1990

152: Still Missing: The Disappearance of Irene Silverman, Pt 3
Show notes
Irene Silverman was missing. And by the time Sante and Kenneth Kimes went to trial for her murder, there was still no body, no murder weapon, and no definitive account of what happened to her the day she was last seen.
The prosecution was face with building a "no body" murder case, a tricky proposition even with the mounting evidence against Sante and Kenneth. So they carefully assembled a slate of witnesses and evidence: Sante's notebooks, a forged deed, wigs, and testimony from friends and staff who could attest to what had been happening in Irene's mansion in the days leading up to her disappearance. As the lead up trial heated up, investigators around the country started scouring their own records intent on answering one question: what other crimes might the mother and son duo have committed. And as they dug, the list of crimes grew. But back in New York, those who loved Irene were faced with a question they still don't have answers for today: where was Irene. In Part 3 of our three-part series on Irene Silverman, we share the trail of devastation the Kimses left and just what questions are left in Irene’s disappearance.📍 Manhattan, New York | July 5, 1998

Show notes
By the summer of 1998, Irene Silverman was becoming increasingly uneasy about her new tenant.Manny Guerin had only been a tenant for a few days when he started making her uncomfortable. He would avoid her eyes when they passed, slink around the edges of the lobby to stay out of range of the security camera, and he seemed to be sneaking an older woman into his apartment.Irene noticed it all, and she wanted him gone. She asked her building manager to draw up the eviction notice. But on July 5th, Irene disappeared. And there was only one suspect.
Investigators moved in quickly, releasing a sketch of Manny Guerin to the public. What they quickly learned is that Manny might not have been his real name after all. Instead, they already had in custody a man named Kenneth Kimes and his mother, Sante Kimes.Just as quickly, they'd learn who they were dealing with: a pair of grifters who had been conducting increasingly violent crimes as they crossed the country. And it seemed like Irene was one of their targets. In Part 2 of our three-part series on Irene Silverman, we journey into the days leading up to Irene’s disappearance and see just who rented an apartment in her mansion.📍 Manhattan, New York | July 5, 1998

Show notes
Before Irene Silverman was a missing woman, she was a ballerina, a wife, a hostess, and the owner of one of Manhattan's most unusual homes: a home that would become the centerpiece of her missing persons case.
Irene grew up in New Orleans and became a ballet dancer before moving to New York City. There, she joined the corps de ballet at Radio City Music Hall. In 1941, she married a businessman with a mysterious past: Samuel Silverman. And in the 1950s, the couple brough a six-story mansion on East 65th Street. Sam called it a "white elephant" but would come to admire the building, too. After his death in 1980, Irene made it her own.She renovated the mansion into apartments and filled it with an eclectic cast of tenants and guests, creating a kind of private Parisian salon in the heart of Manhattan. Irene entertained artists, businesspeople, intellectuals, and strangers. There she told stories about a life that sometimes seemed almost too colorful to be true. But the mansion that gave Irene a place to build a life would eventually make her a target. Months later and thousands of miles away, two young women crossed paths with the same man at a bar. He tried to get them to leave with him. They refused, but as they watched he left the bar with another young woman: Rene Saling. The next day, Rene was found murdered.
Back in Florida, investigators were trying to solve the disappearance of another young woman: Sandra Jean Graham who had disappeared after an ordinary evening playing pool with a stranger.
And behind it all was a man whose history of violence stretched back years despite repeated encounters with the criminal justice system: Billy Mansfield Jr.
As investigators pieced together what happened to the women, Mansfield was on the run. HIs eventual capture would expose a pattern of violence that stretched far beyond the murder of Rene Saling.
And somewhere in the story was a woman whose name investigators would not learn for more than 40 years. She is still known only as Hernando County Jane Doe

The Missing Women of Pinellas County, Pt 2: Margaret Dash, Retha Hiers, and Donyelle Johnson
Episode 147
Show notes
He was finally caught. Just not for the women.
For years, Cleveland Hill Jr. was connected to the disappearances of Margaret Dash, Retha Hiers, and Donyelle Johnson, three women who vanished from Pinellas County, Florida between 1974 and 1989.
Warnings had been made. Allegations had accumulated. Investigators had reason to suspect Hill. But no charges ever came for the three missing women.
Then, in the 1990s, federal investigators came for Hill for something else.
An unusual undercover operation involving cocaine, Coca-Cola, and a federal sting would finally put him behind bars, but it would not answer the question that had followed him for decades: what happened to Margaret, Retha, and Donyelle?
In Part Two of She Goes by Jane, we follow the investigation that finally caught Cleveland Hill, the decades-long efforts to find the three women, and the unanswered questions that remained even after investigators had the opportunity to confront Hill himself.
Margaret Dash. Retha Hiers. Donyelle Johnson.
Their cases remain unsolved.

The Missing Women of Pinellas County, Pt 1: Margaret Dash, Retha Hiers, and Donyelle Johnson
Episode 146
Show notes
Three women disappeared from Pinellas County, Florida over the course of fifteen years.
They came from different backgrounds. Their lives followed different paths. But their disappearances would eventually point investigators toward the same man.
In 1974, Margaret Dash left home to buy medicine for a sick relative and never returned. In 1982, Retha Hiers drove out to buy laundry detergent and vanished. In 1989, college student Donyelle Johnson left for class but never arrived.
Each woman left behind a family searching for answers. Decades later, investigators would come to suspect Cleveland Hill Jr., a married former minister and asphalt contractor with a documented history of violence who was repeatedly investigated but never charged in connection with their disappearances.
This week, we examine the lives of Margaret Dash, Retha Hiers, and Donyelle Johnson, the evidence that links their cases, and the unanswered questions that continue to haunt Pinellas County more than fifty years after Margaret first disappeared.📍 Pinellas County, Florida

San Diego’s Lost Women, Episode 3: The Jane Does
Episode 145
Show notes
Law enforcement called some of San Diego's missing and murdered women "NHIs," short for No Humans Involved. It was police slang used to describe victims they believed didn't matter.
By 1988, the number of women disappearing from San Diego County had become impossible to ignore. Years before, the sheriff had said there was not a disproportionate number of women, but by the time forty-three women were murdered or went missing, the public started pushing for answers. There would be few to find.
In the final episode of our three-part series, we examine the investigation that became one of the largest homicide task forces in California history, the competing theories that shaped the search for answers, and the unidentified women who remain without names decades later. We also explore how police culture, public perception, and systemic failures influenced which victims received urgency and which did not.
The women of El Cajon Boulevard were never one story. They were daughters, mothers, sisters, and friends whose lives intersected in a city that too often looked away.
This is the final chapter of San Diego's Lost Women.📍 San Diego, California | 1980s - 1990s

San Diego’s Lost Women, Episode 2: Mary Colette Rawlinson
Episode 144
Show notes
In October 1985, 19-year-old Mary Colette Rawlinson walked out of a home in San Diego, California, telling her boyfriend she'd be right back. She was never seen again.
As more women disappeared from El Cajon Boulevard and the surrounding communities, investigators struggled to answer a troubling question: were these isolated crimes, or was someone hunting women across San Diego County?
In Part Two of our three-part series, we widen the lens beyond a single case to examine the growing pattern of disappearances and murders targeting women living at the intersection of addiction, poverty, and survival sex work. Through the stories of Mary Colette Rawlinson and the women who vanished alongside her, we look at how fear spread through the community while families fought to convince authorities that their daughters deserved to be searched for.
The mounting number of victims would eventually force law enforcement to confront the possibility that the cases were connected, but by then, many women were already gone.
This is Part Two of our three-part series, San Diego's Lost Women.

San Diego’s Lost Women, Episode 1: Cynthia Maine
Episode 143
Show notes
In the 1980s, dozens of women disappeared from San Diego, California. One of them was 26-year-old Cynthia Maine.
Cynthia was a daughter, sister, mother, and woman trying to survive addiction while working along El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego’s notorious red light district. By 1986, she was rebuilding her life. She had found work as a waitress, but she was also serving as a police informant. Just months before she vanished, she had allegedly begun an affair with one of her police contacts.
Late in February, she told her family she was going to watch a movie.
She never came home.
As investigators searched for Cynthia, few realized they were witnessing the beginning of one of the largest unsolved series of murders and disappearances in California history.
In the first episode of this three-part investigation, we examine Cynthia's disappearance alongside the murder of her friend Donna Gentile. Together, their stories reveal a hidden world of vice squads, confidential informants, police corruption, and the extraordinary risks faced by women living on the margins of San Diego in the mid-1980s.
This series asks how so many women could disappear from one city and why so many of their cases remain unsolved decades later.

The Only Missing WASP: The Disappearance of Gertrude Tompkins Silver
Episode 142
Show notes
On October 26, 1944, Gertrude "Tommy" Tompkins Silver took off from Mines Field in Los Angeles in a P-51 Mustang on what should have been a routine ferry flight.
She never arrived.
Gertrude was one of the pioneering Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), the civilian women who flew military aircraft during World War II so male pilots could be sent overseas. She was also the only WASP to disappear during the war whose aircraft has never been recovered.
In this episode, we explore Gertrude's extraordinary life, from a childhood marked by a debilitating stutter and an unlikely love of goats to world travel, flight, and a quiet wartime marriage just weeks before she vanished.
More than eighty years later, the fate of Gertrude Tompkins Silver remains one of the last great mysteries of the WASPs.
In this episode we talk about women in aviation, World War II history, and the enduring search for one remarkable pilot who never came home.
