  1. Amazon's Expansive New Smart Home Lineup & HomePod mini 2 Review

    Episode 335

    Show notes

Andrew O'Hara covers a big week in smart home news. We've updates from Apple, a whole lineup of new smart home devices from Amazon, and we review the new HomePod mini 2.

    Apple news

    • tvOS 27.2 lets you pair the new Siri Remote with older Apple TVs, back to the Apple TV HD. The remote now shows up in Find My. Screensavers auto-rotate, and profiles get new characters and a kid's profile option on iPhone and iPad. There are also new ASL and BSL audio options.
    • HomePods get Sound Glow, which tints the top of the speaker to match the album art you're playing.
    • Code found in the HomeView 27.2 software points to possible AI agent support, such as Claude and ChatGPT. It also hints at a security camera mode with a chime, a green light and alerts when settings change. Shipping dates are starting to slip.

    Amazon's smart home event

    • The new Echo Dot, Echo Studio with a built-in camera, Echo Time and Echo Show 16 are covered, along with the "A-word" photo frame. The Echo Show 16 adds a home map that scans your rooms with an iPhone.

    More news

    • Matic launches the quieter Serene model and an upgrade program for existing robots. It also adds a "say cheese" photo feature.
    • SwitchBot's AI ArtFrame 2 comes with 500 built-in artworks and more storage.
    • Philips Hue adds AI-built automations.
    • Ecobee launches a free Home Summary.
    • Rise expands into professional installation.

    Review: HomePod Mini 2

    • Andrew finds it noticeably faster, with a new chip, five colors, and extra pairing options for Apple TV 4K and Mac. The audio is essentially unchanged, and Apple's new assistant isn't available at launch.

  2. Nanoleaf CEO on the SwitchBot Merger and the Future of Smart Lighting

    Episode 334

    Show notes

AI data centers are driving up hardware costs, Matter is gaining momentum, and Nanoleaf is joining forces with SwitchBot to expand beyond lighting. In this episode of Smart Home Insider, host Andrew O’Hara talks with Nanoleaf CEO Gimmy Chu about the forces reshaping the smart home—and what the merger could mean for products to come.

They discuss why components like memory and circuit boards are getting more expensive, Apple’s new Home hub and its place in the smart home, and the rapid growth of Matter-certified devices. Gimmy also explains how Nanoleaf’s MCP service could let people use AI to control their lights, and how Nanoleaf and SwitchBot plan to bring their products and expertise together across lighting, shades, and more.

Whether you’re curious about AI-powered home automation, following Apple Home, or wondering what’s next for Matter and connected devices, this conversation offers an inside look at a fast-changing industry.

  3. Hands on with Apple HomeView, Apple TV 4K, & HomePod mini 2 with Guest Sigmund Judge

    Episode 333

    Show notes

Apple just turned the smart home into a full-blown ecosystem play—and Andrew O'Hara and Sigmund Judge break down why the new Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini 2, HomeView, and Apple Home accessories could change how you live with your devices.

If you care about Apple TV, HomeKit, smart displays, or the future of the connected home, this is the episode you have to hear. Sigmund, longtime Apple TV expert and creator behind Screen Times, Magic Rays of Light, and TVOS Today, joins Andrew to unpack the hardware, the software, and the bigger strategy Apple is finally putting on the table.

    You'll discover:

    • Why the new Apple TV 4K's A19 chip, 128GB storage, and built-in microphones matter more than they first appear
    • The real story behind AV1, Dolby Vision 8.1, Dolby Vision 2, and the missing audio pass-through feature everyone keeps asking about
    • What Siri AI and on-device intelligence could unlock for Apple TV, HomeView, and Apple Home automations
    • Why HomeView may be the most interesting Apple home product in years, especially for accessibility, notifications, and room-by-room control
    • What the new Apple Home accessories get right with local storage, Matter support, door-state alerts, and privacy-first design

Andrew and Sigmund also get into the practical side of all this: whether the price jump is justified, what the microphones can actually do, how remote finding works, why the new HomePod mini feels more like a refinement than a revolution, and where Apple still has major gaps to close.

This conversation goes beyond the headlines and into the details that determine whether these products are actually useful or just impressive on paper. If you want the smartest, most honest take on Apple's latest home and TV push, this one is essential listening.

  4. Apple & LG Rumored to Partner in an Effort to Fill Your Smart Home

    Episode 332

    Show notes

Andrew O’Hara and Dan Turk break down Apple’s newly confirmed smart home event on October 13, then dig into the bigger story: Apple’s long-awaited push into smart home hardware. They also cover Ring’s new smart lock and why it got overshadowed almost immediately by Apple’s announcements.

In this episode, Andrew and Dan focus on what Apple’s smart home strategy might look like, including new HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, and smart display rumors, plus a new wave of LG and Schneider Electric accessories built for Apple Home.

    Key topics

    • Apple has confirmed a smart home focused event or hands-on experience in New York on October 13, with no livestream expected
    • The rumored Apple lineup includes a new HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, and a smart home display
    • Dan and Andrew discuss why Apple choosing a smaller in-person experience feels more like a hobby than a major category launch
    • Ring introduced its first smart lock, featuring a kinetic emergency backup knob meant to address battery anxiety
    • The hosts question whether smart lock battery failure is a real user problem or more of a perceived fear for non-users
    • Ring’s new lock surprisingly does not appear to include Matter support, despite Amazon’s public support for the standard
    • Apple’s smart home direction may emphasize reducing setup anxiety through a better commissioning experience, not just better devices
    • Bloomberg and code references point to Apple working with LG and Schneider Electric on a new line of Apple Home accessories
    • Reported devices include a doorbell, deadbolt, thermostat, environmental sensor, indoor camera, outdoor camera, and floodlight camera
    • The big Apple differentiator may be special NFC based setup and Home app commissioning that works better than standard Matter onboarding
    • LG devices may remove Matter’s offline NFC proxy flow and replace it with an Apple Home specific setup path
    • The hosts debate whether this strategy improves the smart home experience broadly or creates a premium tier only for Apple partnered hardware
    • Several of the new devices appear designed to support Thread, UWB, dual band Wi-Fi, and better cross device automation
    • The indoor camera may use a motorized pan or privacy mechanism, while the doorbell may include two cameras for better package visibility

  5. Apple's Smart Home Plans Start to Materialize & Smart Home Security with Ultraloq's Raj Sundar

    Episode 331

    Show notes

This episode covers two big smart home threads: the latest Apple smart home rumors and a deep dive with Raj Sundar from X Things about locks and cameras. If you care about where smart home hardware is headed, the conversation ties together Apple’s privacy-first approach, Matter’s camera support, and how access control is moving toward more natural, context-aware entry.

We discuss the new X Things locks, the company’s Matter camera strategy, and how standards like Matter and Aliro are reshaping what consumers should expect from smart home devices.

    Key topics

    • In this episode: Andrew and Raj break down the latest Apple smart home display rumors, including new standby faces for cameras and a modular home view.
    • We discuss Apple’s likely launch window for a smart home display, HomePod mini refresh, and Apple TV 4K update, plus the possibility of an in-store reveal.
    • Raj shares why Xthings expects Apple to wait for the next Matter camera update before fully supporting camera features in the Apple ecosystem.
    • We discuss Apple’s rumored smart home camera approach, which appears focused on low-frame-rate sensing and AI analysis rather than traditional video recording.
    • Raj explains X Things’ three new lock families — Bolt Mission, Bolt Pro, and Latch 5 Pro — and how each serves a different access scenario.
    • We discuss the difference between simple proximity unlock and intent-based unlock, including the role of ultra-wideband, BLE, and radar sensing.
    • Raj shares why Xthings is betting on a mix of credentials rather than one universal method, with phone, watch, fingerprint, PIN, key fob, and physical key serving different household needs.
    • We discuss the broader trend away from proprietary lock ecosystems and toward standards-based access with Matter and Aliro.
    • Raj explains Xthings’ camera roadmap, including the Matter-certified Ulticam IQ V2 and the company’s focus on object detection, AI summaries, and local processing.
    • We discuss how smart home hardware companies are dealing with rising component costs and manufacturing uncertainty.

He also breaks down Apple’s Apple Intelligence camera pricing, then shares hands-on impressions from the Anchor Eufy launch event and a quick look at new lock and projector hardware.

    • He explains how Apple may add sound to Apple TV screensavers, including the Snoopy screensaver, with a user toggle for enabling or disabling audio.

    • He reveals new HomePod mini 2 color options surfaced in code: green, pink, blue, white, and black, with orange seemingly on the way out.
    • He argues that Apple Intelligence camera pricing is too high, comparing Apple’s camera limits and storage tiers against a competitor offering unlimited cameras for $10 per month.
    • Andrew breaks down the difference between HomeKit Secure Video storage and Apple Intelligence summaries, emphasizing that they are separate services with separate costs.
    • He covers Ultralock’s new deadbolts, including the Bolt Pro and Latch 5 Pro with Aliro NFC support, and the Bolt Mission with ultra-wideband but no Aliro or Home Key.
    • He explains why he prefers system-level access methods like UWB, Home Key, or Aliro over app-dependent unlock flows.
    • He looks at Govee’s Holiday Pattern Projector Lite, an outdoor projector with a dual-light setup, interchangeable projection films, Matter support, and use beyond holiday decorating.
    • He wraps with hands-on thoughts from the Anker Eufy event, including the company’s property-wide camera strategy and a standout track-light camera that follows motion.

    • Eufy’s Solar Wall Light Cam S4 is the standout product of the week for Andrew, combining a 4K camera, wall sconce lighting, solar charging, a 10,000 mAh battery, and millimeter-wave motion sensing.
    • Andrew emphasizes why Eufy’s radar-based motion detection is a big upgrade over basic PIR or pixel-difference motion sensing.
    • Abode adds two outdoor-friendly sensors: an outdoor contact sensor with weather resistance and a garage tilt sensor for doors, sheds, and hatches.
    • Sonos and Lutron expand their integration so Sonos voice control can operate Lutron Caseta lights, shades, and plugs, while a Pico remote can control Sonos playback.
    • SwitchBot’s beta AI assistant, KATA, can control devices across rooms, check battery status, guide setup, and even create automations through natural language.
    • PetLibro had server issues that disrupted some pet feeders, fountains, and litter boxes, raising Andrew’s recurring concern about cloud dependence in smart home gear.
    • Matic unveils Matic Cues, a major AI-driven update for its vacuum that lets users speak naturally, point to messes, and command the robot to clean specific spots.
    • Andrew also reviews a new Dashboard app for Apple Home and RTSP cameras that focuses on a clean dashboard-first experience.
    • The episode closes with the Mophie 4-in-1 charging stand, which adds a hidden retractable USB-C cable and manages to stay compact without active cooling.
