168. The Mist (2007) Movie Review | Stephen King Horror & That Ending
Show notes
What would you do if an ordinary grocery store trip turned into a fight for survival against something lurking in the mist? In this episode of So I Married a Film Critic, we're stepping into the terrifying world of The Mist (2007), the sci-fi horror film based on Stephen King's novella.
Directed by Frank Darabont and starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laurie Holden, The Mist traps a group of strangers inside a supermarket as a mysterious fog rolls into town, hiding horrifying creatures and dangers beyond their imagination. But as fear takes hold, the people inside discover that the monsters outside might not be the only thing they have to worry about.
We're discussing the movie's creature effects, claustrophobic atmosphere, psychological horror, religious fanaticism, human nature under pressure, and that famously devastating ending. Does The Mist deliver one of the most effective horror movie experiences of the 2000s? And what makes this Stephen King adaptation so unforgettable?
We're also getting into the "love story", where we would hang out if we were trapped in a grocery store and what this story is trying to tell us.
If you love movie review podcasts, film criticism, Stephen King movies, horror movie reviews, sci-fi horror, monster movies, psychological thrillers, 2000s horror films, and movie discussions, join us for The Mist on So I Married a Film Critic.

165. "Backrooms" Movie Review: Horror, Liminal Spaces & a Divisive Ending
Show notes
In this episode of So I Married a Film Critic, we review Backrooms, the eerie horror movie inspired by the internet phenomenon that turned liminal spaces into one of the creepiest concepts online, while also dividing our household.
Barry loved it. Julia… not so much.
We talk about what makes the Backrooms concept so creepy, whether the movie actually delivers on that unsettling premise, the power of liminal spaces, and why something that works brilliantly for one viewer can leave another completely cold.
And then there’s the ending — can anyone make sense of it? Are we still in the backrooms right now? What does your backrooms doppleganger look like? Wait until you hear Barry's description! (That might be scarier than this movie!)
Listen as a film critic and his wife disagree yet again — because apparently, marriage means watching movies you don't even like.

164. Body Heat (1981): Kathleen Turner, William Hurt & the Ultimate Neo-Noir
Show notes
This week on So I Married a Film Critic, we turn up the heat with Lawrence Kasdan’s steamy 1981 neo-noir Body Heat, starring Kathleen Turner and William Hurt. We both loved this sexy, suspenseful classic—but Barry’s love for Kathleen Turner may be just a little more enthusiastic than Julia’s as emphasized by the many windchime references. IYKYK!
We talk about what makes Body Heat such an enduring erotic thriller, from Kathleen Turner’s unforgettable breakthrough performance as the seductive Matty Walker to William Hurt’s overly sweaty, morally questionable Ned Racine. We dig into the film’s twists, chemistry, cinematography, dialogue, and its clever reworking of classic film noir conventions.
Is Body Heat one of the best erotic thrillers of the 1980s? Has Kathleen Turner ever been more magnetic? And just how much trouble can one man get himself into when he falls for the wrong woman?
Join us for a fun conversation about Body Heat, Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, 1980s movies, neo-noir, film noir, erotic thrillers, classic movies, and what makes a movie impossible to resist.

Hear our sequel ideas, our thoughts on the sexual politics and why this movie shouldn't have been as good as it is. So if you see any surfing, skydiving, bank robbing movie, make sure it's this one.

162. Disclosure Day
Show notes
This was the movie that was supposed to change everything! Life on Earth was never going to be the same after this movie! Instead, we get Emily Blunt having a Dr. Doolittle relationship with animals, a glowing phallic stick of extraterrestrial origins and an unveiling of footage less scary than anything currently on Instagram. Barry and Julia talk about this Spielberg film, compare it to his extraordinary body of work, and try to find enthusiasm for an alien movie less exciting than "MAC and Me."

Show notes
One of us loved it and one of us hated it! Barry and Julia talk about this outrageous version of the Bride of Frankenstein, what (mostly) worked and what really didn't work at all. Plus, merch ideas that we should definitely think about trademarking before this episode publishes. Let us know if you guessed right about who loved this movie!

154. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Show notes
In this episode, we dive into the beautifully strange and emotionally layered world of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, this film takes us on a surreal journey through memory, heartbreak, and the desperate desire to forget the ones we once loved.
We unpack the film’s nonlinear storytelling, its hauntingly honest portrayal of relationships, and the big question at its core: if you could erase the pain of a failed relationship, would you… and should you? And, if we found each other again, would we fall in love? Along the way, we talk about the standout performances, the dreamlike visuals, and the moments that hit a little too close to home.
It’s thoughtful, a little trippy, and deeply human—this is one of those conversations that lingers long after the episode ends. Follow along behind the scenes on Instagram @soimarriedafilmcritic_podcast.

153. Battleship (2012)
Show notes
We finally watched Battleship… but this movie should have sunk before it was made.
In this episode, we dive into the 2012 would-be blockbuster that tried to turn a board game into an action-packed alien invasion—and somehow missed the mark on just about everything.
We talk about the bizarre plot, the lack of character depth, and the moments that made us laugh… but definitely weren’t supposed to. Maybe a better game turned movie would be "Shoots and Ladders" or "Hungry, Hungry, Hippos."
This ones for you Robin and Jason! <3

149. Highlander (1986) - There Can Be Only One
Show notes
Your hosts Barry and Julia return for the 6th season of SIMAFC to discuss Russell Mulcahy's "Highlander" (1986). This cult favorite and surprise franchise spawner stars the French Christopher Lambert as a Scottish warrior and Sean Connery as an Egyptian/Spanish mentor. It doesn't make sense and neither does the Dracula-esque story. What works? The awesome tunes of Queen, clanging sword battles and quotable dialogue. We discuss how old Connor McCloud really was when he "died," how many wives he could have had and how even men at 400 years old don't understand women.
