Pedro and the Prophetic Dream | Encore Episode
Show notes
Following his death on February 16, 1893, Dr. Emile Overton Moore was buried in the Maple Hill cemetery, just north of his hometown of Helena; but, according to legend, Moore’s loyal canine companion, Pedro refused to leave his graveside after his interment. Out of respect for that beloved canine, Moore's family placed a statue of Pedro at his grave, making it one of the most infamous memorials at Maple Hill... although, the local lore surrounding Dr. Moore's death is actually a little darker and more mysterious than that heartwarming suggests.

Addie Knox and the Plat-Eye | Campfire Tales
Show notes
For generations, the Gullah Geechee people of South Carolina's Lowcountry have passed down stories of mysterious supernatural beings known as Plat-Eyes, terrifying apparitions said to haunt the region's lonely roads, swamps, and woodlands. Sometimes appearing as ordinary animals and other times as monstrous creatures with glowing eyes, these strange entities have become an enduring part of the region's rich folklore. But one particularly chilling account comes from a Gullah woman named Addie Knox, whose alleged encounter with a Plat-Eye was recorded by folklorist Genevieve Willcox Chandler during the 1930s. While making her way home through the dark, swampy woods near Murrells Inlet, Addie reportedly came face to face with something unlike anything she had ever seen before, an experience that would forever change the way she regarded the old stories passed down by her ancestors.

Ghost Pirates of L'Isle de Gombi | Campfire Tales
Show notes
Deep in the coastal marshes of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, lies a secluded island near the mouth of Bayou Caillou known as L'Isle de Gombi. According to an old piece of Cajun folklore, this remote patch of land was once used by Gulf Coast pirates to conceal a fortune in stolen treasure, and some believe that the spirits of those who buried it still linger there, guarding their riches from anyone foolish enough to come looking. For generations, stories of these restless pirates have circulated among the families living along the surrounding bayous, but one particularly terrifying tale concerns a young Cajun man named Louis, whose determination to uncover the legendary treasure led him to venture out to the island alone one moonlit night. What he encountered there would become the subject of one of Louisiana's most chilling pirate legends.

Just outside Gadsden, Alabama, the waters of Black Creek plunge nearly ninety feet over a sandstone cliff into the rocky gorge below. Known today as Noccalula Falls, this breathtaking natural landmark has long been associated with the tragic legend of a beautiful young Cherokee woman who, according to local lore, leaped to her death rather than marry a man she did not love. The Phantom Monk of East Tennessee
Show notes
For generations, folks down in Charleston, Tennessee have stories of a mysterious figure dressed in the brown robes of a Catholic monk, wandering alone along the railroad tracks after dark. According to legend, his restless spirit belongs to a young man who vanished following a devastating train wreck during the Great Flood of 1867. Although his family traveled from Maryland to search for him, no trace of the missing monk was ever found.
But the story doesn't end with his disappearance. Years later, a local physician began reporting strange encounters inside his medical office, including glimpses of a robed figure and unexplained sounds that seemed to follow him through the building. What began as an unsettling haunting would eventually become part of a far more disturbing tale, one involving a respected doctor, a mysterious discovery, and a dark secret said to have remained hidden in Charleston for generations.

Annie Whipple and a Message from the Dead
Show notes
In the heart of Old Louisville stands a grand Victorian mansion where guests have long reported seeing the apparition of a woman dressed in black descending its sweeping staircase. According to legend, her name was Annie Whipple, a widowed governess whose desperate attempt to save a dying child led her beyond the medicine of the nineteenth century—and into the growing world of Spiritualism.
When the one man Annie believed could save the girl died before she could reach him, she refused to give up. What happened next would become one of Old Louisville’s strangest legends, connecting Annie to a mysterious local woman, an unusual method of communicating with the dead, and a series of events that supposedly unfolded inside the mansion. But like so many old ghost stories, the deeper you dig into the tale of Annie Whipple, the harder it becomes to separate the woman at the center of the legend from the history and folklore that may have created her.

Legend of the Richmond Vampire | Encore Episode
Show notes
On the bluffs above the James River, Richmond’s historic Hollywood Cemetery is the final resting place of presidents, governors, generals, and thousands of Civil War soldiers. But tucked into a hillside on the eastern side of the cemetery is a far less imposing mausoleum that has become the center of one of the city’s strangest legends. For generations, locals have claimed that the tomb marked with the name W. W. Pool is the resting place of something far more sinister—the Richmond Vampire.
The legend stretches beyond the gates of Hollywood Cemetery to the catastrophic collapse of the Church Hill Tunnel in 1925, when witnesses supposedly encountered a grotesque, blood-covered figure emerging from the disaster before fleeing toward the cemetery. But behind the story of the Richmond Vampire is a very real tragedy, and the deeper you dig into the history of W. W. Pool and the men trapped beneath Church Hill, the stranger the origins of this enduring Richmond legend become.
