Sports R Dumb

Basketball, Sports, Volleyball

Sean and Joey love sports, but they realize there are a lot of dumb elements within our favorite games. And each week, they'll break down one of those dumb things in this tidy, bite-sized podcast. Drop by to hear Sean lament over the stupidity of a certain aspect in sports—basketball, football, baseball, hockey, golf, tennis, volleyball, lacrosse—nothing is off-limits. If there's something dumb to talk about, you better believe we'll hit it. We're also covering some pointless tweets, overused sports cliches, and general news that...well, doesn't need to be news. And we love to hear from you! Give Sean or Joey (or both) a shout with your favorite dumb things.

Sean was live for the Dallas Cowboys' collapse against the Arizona Cardinals. After the game, he felt like he had wasted four hours of his life. Sounds about right!

Plus, a potential adventure in credit card fraud, finding good Cuban food in unexpected places, and how do you stop caring so much about sports?

  2. A Spooky Episode of Sports R Dumb, Just in Time for Halloween!

    Show notes

Joey visits Vancouver and goes to a Vancouver Canucks game. Sean stays in Austin and goes to a Texas Longhorns game. Neither of those are particularly spooky on their own, but just you wait.

We're also covering dumb moments from the first week of the NBA season, including a travel that just might make you stop watching the sport entirely, plus the evolution of Ole Miss's "Rebels" mascot.

Finally, Sean breaks down the five spookiest types of fans to sit by during a live sporting event. Happy Halloween!

  3. 24 Teams in the College Football Playoff is Nobody Asked For This Dumb

    Show notes

The NCAA just expanded its football playoffs to 12 teams in 2024, a system it has not yet perfected. But for some reason (i.e. money), the NCAA is now expanding the new system to 24 teams. Hope y'all are ready for a bunch of lackluster SEC and Big 10 programs to make the playoff!

Plus, other things rich dudes have ruined, and LeBron's entry into Polymarket is discouraging in a league that already has many gambling-addicted fans.

  4. The NFC East's Week Was Historically Dumb

    Show notes

We're through five weeks of the NFL season, and you might never see something as dumb as what the NFC East just went through. The Cowboys lost at home to the Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, with a contract employee getting fired for calling Dallas's performance "embarrassing" as Dak Prescott walked by. Then, the Eagles lost a game where they took the lead with 8 seconds left and their opponent was out of timeouts. Finally, the Giants and Commanders played each other and ended in a tie, with both teams making boneheaded plays in overtime when a field goal would have won it.

And so, in Week 5 of the 2026 NFL season, the NFC East became the first division in league history to not win a single game despite two of the division's teams playing each other. Truly spectacular.

Plus, Sean recounts his Bahamas vacation, the White Sox and WNBA playoffs were full of silliness, and we do a live taste test of a new product from H-E-B.

  5. Excellent Playoff Hijinks R Not Dumb; Aggressive Points at Players R Dumb

    Show notes

We recorded this episode in advance because Seany Boy is headed on vacation! So, there's less topical sports chatter than usual, but never fear! We're sharing some excellent board game recs, diving into the latest Jackbox, and still getting a heavy dose of sports hijinks courtesy of the 2026 Chicago White Sox.

We're also talking the MLB and WNBA playoffs, and a very "pointed" controversy in the latter. And we ruminate over the walk-up songs we'd choose. What would you want to hear as you strolled to the plate during a baseball game?

  6. The MLB Playoffs Having a .500 Team Hosting a Wild Card Series is Averagely Dumb

    Show notes

The MLB playoffs are upon us! Can Sean name all 12 teams participating in this year's postseason?

We're also diving into some cute on-field moments, some hilariously juvenile celebrations, and some silly penalties that perhaps swung games.

Plus, Joey runs the Run the Runway 5k on at the Corpus Christi International Airport, and the Cowboys also somehow lost against the Ravens in regulation after tying the game with seven seconds left. Sean vows to quit football. We'll see how long it lasts.

  7. Overreactions From Week to Week During the NFL Season R Short-Fusedly Dumb

    Show notes

After Week 1, people made all kinds of proclamations about the state of the NFL. The Bears are the best offense in the NFL after scoring 59 points. The Browns offense is incapable of moving the football. The Patriots are suddenly bad after reaching the Super Bowl last year. Of course, by the end of Week 2, all of those takes looked silly. Yet overreactions are commonplace during the long and grueling football season.

Plus, Sean and Joey each had some adventures at various stadiums (football and baseball, respectively), and we dissect some of the ins and outs of Saturday Night Live after Joey visited the "50 Years of SNL Music" exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

  8. Trying to Predict Week 1 of the NFL Season Was Hard-Headedly Dumb

    Show notes

We had to record this episode in advance of any of the NFL games being played, so cheer us for making correct predictions (such as Deshaun Watson being bad at football) and also cheer us for making bold ones that didn't happen (like Titans/Jets being the game of the weekend). And we doubt anyone would have predicted the Bears and Panthers would combine for 96 points, the highest-scoring Week 1 game in NFL history.

Plus, Sean waxes poetic about the Kawhi Leonard and Los Angeles Clippers situation, and Joey attended a Guardians game that featured an 18-pitch at-bat that eventually ended in a walk (though he didn't know that when we were recording). Fascinating stuff!

    35 min
  9. Week 1 College Football Season Matchups R Uncompetitively Dumb

    Show notes

Browse through the scores of most college football games during Week 1 and...well, you'd see a lot of blowouts. Joey attended a Texas A&M game as a reporter, and the final score was 50-0. Sean's Texas Longhorns won by 52 points. Other big schools beat up on low-end FBS or FCS universities in games that were pretty much decided before halftime.

Of course, we did have a few marquee matchups, including the Ole Miss/Louisville thriller, and some entertaining games between schools that will probably be good (Oregon and Boise State) and schools that will probably only be so-so (Auburn and Baylor). Either way, we're happy college football and all the dumb elements of it are back.

And don't you worry, we're also talking about the wild ending of that Michigan/Western Michigan game, afternoon start times for southern schools, and some unique latte flavors.

  10. College Football is Here and an 18-Wheeler Hits Sean's Car

    Show notes

These two events are not related, but they're the big moments of the past few days. Sean relives a rough moment at work when his parked car got sliced by an 18-wheeler truck.

Meanwhile, the college football season has kicked off. And for some reason, we keep playing games in wet and rainy Ireland. Sean gives us his best Irish accent to celebrate.

  11. We're Back with Lots of Good Times Among the Dumb!

    Show notes

We're back! We've taken most of August off because it's too hot to record...er, because of some major life events! Joey became an uncle to a wonderful niece and also took a trip to Alaska; both are delightful. Sean scored four goals in a hockey game and then his check engine light came on during the ride home, a great sign that you can never ride too high on your horses.

Plenty of dumb stuff is going on in sports, too! The Cleveland Browns named Deshaun Watson their starter despite him being not a good human being and an even worse quarterback. The Los Angeles Lakers and other NBA franchises seem to just be toys for some billionaire owners to hold onto for a year before flipping it like it a renovated house. LSU and Lane Kiffin tried to sign a tight end who was a professional NFL player a week ago. Plus, a fun thought exercise to do a Bill Belichick impersonation with an Irish accent.

And we lost a legend in Dolly Parton, an absolute icon. That's not really related to sports, but she transcended all of these games. May her kindness and generosity towards others continue to live on in all of us.

  12. Owners Not Caring About Fielding Competitive Teams R Unambiguously Dumb

    Show notes

We saw a blockbuster trade in Major League Baseball over the weekend, with two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal going to the Los Angeles Dodgers. This team now has approximately 900 very good to elite players on its team, and people are mad about it. But it's hard to get mad at the Dodgers for trying to make their teams better, when it seems like many other owners around the league do not care as much.

Plus, we chat about Sean's visit to Houston to watch the Rangers take on the Astros at Daikin Park, the disappointment of teams making you purchase more expensive tickets for certain giveaways, and the vibes of blowing out an opponent with ease.

  13. Lengthy LeBron James Decision Sagas R Interminably Dumb

    Show notes

LeBron James has made his "last decision," and he's heading to the Philadelphia 76ers. That's a mighty exciting team on paper, don't you think? Good things games are not played on looseleaf.

Plus, we reflect on Sean's jam-packed hockey weekend—including a game that started shortly after midnight—and reminisce on the time Joey was featured on local TV celebrating a corn hole victory during a tailgate.

  14. Argentina Not Having a Single Shot on Goal in a 120-Minute Match is Offensively Challenged Dumb

    Show notes

The 2026 World Cup is in the books! Spain defeated Argentina in a thrilling 1-0 snoozefest that included zero shots on goal from Argentina despite over two hours of game time. At least the halftime show sure was something.

Elsewhere in the sports world, Caitlin Clark dropped 45 points and her team still nearly lost, and the MLB had its Home Run Derby and All-Star Game and...well, these events seemed a lot more fun as kids (and also had way less betting and gambling shout outs). Plus, Joey gets the best karaoke compliment he's ever received.

  15. Dives During the World Cup R Endlessly Replayed Dumb

    Show notes

In Switzerland's World Cup match against Argentina, Breel Embolo appeared to get aggressively tackled. Upon replay review, he actually just threw himself into the air and then flailed on the ground. He was rightfully given a second yellow card and removed from the game. Chaos ensued. Don't worry, Harry Kane took a wild dive, too.

Plus, moments you may have missed in Space Jam, Sean merch we should totally make, the time Joey got locked out of his apartment while staying in Argentina, and a handy way to remember which state is Vermont and which one is New Hampshire.

  16. Political Battles During the World Cup R Egotistically Dumb

    Show notes

We're right in the thick of the World Cup, and there have been many magical moments and exciting matches. Of course, there have also been some corrupt actions and political posturing that has not helped one bit.

Plus, there have been some major moves making waves across the NBA. And yet, 16 years later, we're still somehow waiting on LeBron James to make a decision.

  17. The NBA Draft and Offseason "Processes" R Confusingly Dumb

    Show notes

An incoming rookie gets drafted by an NBA team. This is the greatest moment of their lives! But then they get traded and...have to keep the hat of their old team on while they get their picture taken? It's weird, man. NBA free agency has a lot of wackiness to it, as well. We're breaking it all down.

Meanwhile, this World Cup has been thrilling! We're officially in the knockout stages, which means if you lose, you're going home. Plus, Sean has some ailments, and Joey has some obscure basketball cards. What a treat.

  18. A Hawaiian World Cup Excursion!

    Show notes

Joey is back from his Hawaiian vacation and needs Sean to catch him up on NBA, NHL, and World Cup happenings. Turns out the folks of Maui are quite friendly, so while Joey missed many games, he made many new friends. And ain't that what life is all about?

Plus, we talk about the excitement of having patriotism, snorkeling with sea turtles, and what it's like to be a video game tester.

  19. Fan Behavior During the NBA Finals Was Incomprehensibly Dumb

    Show notes

The NBA (and NHL) Finals are in the books, but we didn't know that when we recorded this episode! Instead, we got to see NBA fans acting foolish in beating up other people, and this happened both in New York and San Antonio against Spurs and Knicks fans, respectively. Why are we letting laundry dictate our behavior?

Plus, it's the beginning of the World Cup! What a great time. We also dive into the sad vibes that occur after being egged, Blink-182 dropping "new" bonus tracks from 25 years ago, and very wholesome moments during performances of the World Series.

  20. Blazer Tag, Bingo, and Karaoke Respites Among Dumb Sports Moves

    Show notes

Why in the world are the Chicago Bears moving to Indiana? Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks and Stars are both moving to a less-populated area of Dallas and Plano, respectively. Change isn't always bad, but it hurts to lose a classic, nostalgic memory.

Luckily, we have some nice breaks among the craziness. Joey had a busy weekend of laser tag, bingo, and karaoke, including a performance as Game 2 of the NBA Finals was wrapping up (he did not choose this). Sean ALSO did karaoke and played a hockey playoff game, which was fortunate, because he wound up missing every goal during Stanley Cup Game 3 while he rocked the mic.
