Stateside Gooners: An Arsenal FC Show
Stateside Gooners gives American Arsenal fans a way into the club that respects their distance and intelligence. We came from the wrong side of the pond so we built the show WE needed: analysis you can follow, history you can argue with; the culture, finance, & tactics behind it all. The whole history, not just the trophy years. That includes the 55-year Black lineage that runs through Arsenal like no other English club, the supporters who made the club go first, and the women’s side as a matter of course, not just a segment. We keep it funny, bc a 7:30 alarm for North London should be joyful.

On this episode, Eric, Ted (Kevin), and Matt get excited about the squad breaking that loooong winless streak at Anfield.
There were some happy surprises in the starting lineup and a lot of really good performances by the Arsenal players. The match was open for long stretches of the first half and some parts of the second. Liverpool’s MacAllister had a lot of contributions in the match and most of them were not good. Lots of happiness, excitement and laughter on this episode.
The guys have a quick snapshot of the upcoming champions league match against Slavia Prague.
We continue our expected cadence: 1 big number, 2 minute mashup of the rest of the EPL in match week 9, and 3 quick things, plus a bonus stat of the weird for the upcoming match against Slavia Prague.

Massive performances from a lot of the players in this match especially Alessia Russo who gets her first hat trick of the season. Arsenal FC get Carabao Cup snakebit (erm, defeated handily) by EFL League Two club Fleetwood Town. EPL Week 9 Liverpool FC host Arsenal at Anfield.
Thank you for tuning in!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard that Arsenal lost to Fleetwood Town. Did you think it was odd that Fleetwood Town wears red shirt with the white sleeves? Or that they play in “Highbury Stadium”? Was this loss destiny?
On Episode 165, Eric and Matt lament the Max Dowman red card, consider the way Arteta handled it, and express how we would have addressed it.
This is easily the worst loss by a Premier League club in the Carabou Cup, likely in English cup competition history. We’ll tell you why.
One ‘big’ number is a fraction this time. Liverpool gets a match preview and a bonus starting lineup prediction, with a twist? Thanks to injuries, the team essentially picks itself in some areas. We spell out predictions for Week 9 in the Premier League and wind up with 3QTs.
Oh and hey, this is a combined 200 episodes for the Stateside Gooners podcast, 165 for the men and 35 for the women.

On this episode, Eric and Matt talk about the fabulous advertisement for football that was the Arsenal - Bayern Munich match. The guys recap the goals and near misses. There is discussion about the assists that set up a couple of goals. You’ll hear about Saka and our speculation about how long the injury will keep him out of action. The match ended up just short of a perfect ending when Timber’s shot in extra time was denied. Great match - this is why you want to compete in the Champions League. Then we preview the Premier League match against Everton at The Emirates and speculate about how much time Max Dowman may get.

On this episode, the guys recap The Arsenal’s one-nil to the Arrrr-sen-nil victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Playing there is always a difficult place for Arsenal. Why aren’t Arsenal scoring goals in the first half or scoring goals from set pieces? A better question for Nottingham Forest fans is when will Forest score a goal at the City Ground? Kevin runs 2-minute Mashup covering the other 8 games from Week 7 (the nasty roosters play Coventry at the Loo on Monday). Somehow, as we’re all trying to sort ourselves and decide how we’ll feel and what we’ll do if Manchester City Cheaters Club get punished what we think is enough, or not. Meanwhile, their manager is out there saying ‘I know nothing.’ If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember Shultz saying that on Hogan’s Heroes. I think I recall it being highly sarcastic, and that he knew everything but didn’t want to get in trouble or be responsible for not being a tattletale. Feels a little like that with Enzo Maresca. Enough talk about the lying cheating blues. If you haven’t checked out my full analysis of what punishment should look like, you’ll find it in Punished: The Sentence Manchester City Deserves.
On this episode, Eric and Matt cover Arsenal’s Champions League match against Lille. Three really lovely goals and who started the goal scoring? None other than defender Jurrien Timber and his magical right foot. We discuss Saka’s key contribution off the bench. There is a quick rundown of the crazy results in the Champions League. We preview the Nottingham Forest match and the challenges they present. Make sure to listen to the end for the 3 quick things and the big number reveal.

Lille bring Olivier Giroud, our beloved goal scorer, back to the Emirates to face his former club. Is there anyone expecting anything but a warm welcome? Other than that time in Baku, he’s always been one of our favorites.

114 Guilty. Now What? Bonus
Season 3, Episode 158
Show notes
Thank you for tuning in!
After three and a half years of waiting, the verdict is reportedly in: Manchester City found guilty on 114 of 115 Premier League charges. Misreported finances, hidden payments to players and managers, broken spending rules at home and in Europe, and 35 counts of refusing to cooperate with the investigation. Nine seasons. Three league titles. One very expensive legal team.
So what happens next? Everything is on the table, and we mean everything.
The other 19 owners have watched City lift trophies for a decade, and they aren’t going to let the league go soft. Clubs could sue for damages. Players who lost titles, bonuses and Champions League money could too.
Could it become one giant class action with every club and every player lining up?
Don’t rule it out.
Then there’s the punishment. How big a points deduction? 60? 600? A forced sale? A ban on selling, leaving the owners stuck with a club that can’t earn? The NBA forced Donald Sterling to sell the Clippers, and the Kroenkes were on the owners’ side of that table. Juventus got relegated (one division, we got this one wrong) and stripped of titles. Rangers started over, four divisions down. (That’s who we were thinking of.) Lance Armstrong lost seven Tour de France titles and nobody got promoted into them. Does City’s trophy cabinet get emptied the same way? And what does it all mean for Pep Guardiola’s legacy?
Here’s a question nobody is asking: if the Premier League relegates City, does the Championship have to take them?
Or could the EFL simply say no thanks?
It’s all unprecedented. The timelines say we should know soon, but the timelines have been wrong every step of the way. And honestly? We’ll take effective over efficient. If getting it right takes longer, and it means the verdict can’t be flipped on appeal, we’ll wait. What we don’t want is a fast resolution that ends in a slap on the wrist.
Pull up a chair. Stateside Gooners break down the biggest scandal in Premier League history.
