Show notes

Wayne Pacelle on beagle rescue, wolves and wild horses
Show notes
Wayne Pacelle, founder and CEO of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy, shares updates on the closure of Ridglan Farms near Madison, Wisconsin, where more than 1,000 beagles have been rescued. He discusses the conditions the dogs faced, why animal testing is becoming obsolete, and the effort to find alternatives while reducing costs.
Pacelle also talks about horses being removed from public lands, being sold by the federal government and, in some cases, finding their way into the slaughter pipeline.
And there’s growing concern that the Supporting America’s Ranchers presidential executive order could reduce protections for gray wolves and endangered Mexican wolves. While it is an attempt to appease ranchers and farmers, wolves are needed for the ecosystem.
Steve also shares how a specific cat food could help with seasonal allergies.

Janis Bradley rethinks dog aggression
Show notes
Janis Bradley helped pioneer research showing that a dog’s breed is not a predictor of aggression. In this conversation, she explains why many behaviors we label as “aggressive” are often better understood as defensive responses. Bradley discusses the real motivations behind dog bites, and the insights from her latest book, Look Closer: Rethinking Dog Warning Signals. She also explains why growling is an important form of communication and why suppressing those signals can make interactions with dogs less safe, not more.

Wayne Pacelle on predator control and animal research
Show notes
Wayne Pacelle, CEO and president of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy, discusses several major animal welfare stories that have received little national attention. He explains why the USDA has resumed using poison-loaded devices to kill predators—including more than 100,000 coyotes, along with bears, wolves, and other wildlife—and the risks these devices pose to pets and people. Pacelle also shares the story behind Ridglan Farms near Madison, Wisconsin, relinquishing all of its research beagles following negotiations he helped lead, and why advances in science are reducing the need for dogs, primates, and other animals in medical research while potentially lowering drug development costs. Plus, he discusses how the New World screwworm outbreak has temporarily halted the horse slaughter meat trade with Mexico.

Heart disease in pets, AKC under fire, and Ask the Dog
Show notes
Veterinary cardiologist Dr. Chris Brennan offers the 4-1-1 on heart disease in dogs and in cats, and the latest on new treatments.
Dog trainer Zak George wonders out loud how and why the American Kennel Club (AKC) appears to support puppy mills by fighting bipartisan legislation known as the Puppy Mill Protection Act. That’s not to mention that the AKC does not require breeding standards aimed at reducing serious inherited health problems, including Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, and for failing to take a stronger position against punishment-based training methods and the use of shock collars.
Plus, I share the inspiration behind my latest book, Ask the Dog, and why I felt it was important to write it.
