  2. From Policy to Power: What It Takes to Get Energy Built

    Season 19, Episode 980

    Show notes

America needs more electricity. But between recognizing that need and actually putting new power on the grid sits a complicated mix of policy, manufacturing, permitting, interconnection, capital, and community trust.

Recorded live at the CHESSA Energize Summit, this conversation looks at that challenge from three different points in the industry. Robin Dutta, Executive Director of the Chesapeake Solar & Storage Association, explains how policy and industry advocacy shape the market companies are trying to build in. Carlos Class, CEO of Goldi America, offers a firsthand look at the capital, certification, supply-chain work, and risk involved in bringing solar manufacturing back to Virginia. And Drew Price, co-founder of Hexagon Energy, shares what years of project development have taught him about interconnection uncertainty, resilient project portfolios, and why relationships with local communities can determine whether a good project ever gets built.

Together, the conversation gets beyond the simple call to “build more power” and into what doing that actually requires.

    Expect to Learn:

🔹 Why interconnection and permitting delays are killing viable solar projects

🔹 How changing federal policies threaten domestic manufacturing investments

🔹 Why building American solar supply chains takes years, not months

🔹 How community trust can determine whether a project gets built

If you build, finance, manufacture, permit, or advocate for energy projects, this episode offers a practical look at the work between policy and power.

  3. The Scariest Question in Solar Finance: What If Your EPC Fails? | Gage Kellogg

    Season 19, Episode 979

    Show notes

Lenders spook easily. And for good reason.

Their job is to protect capital, so a solar project can have solid economics, proven technology, and an EPC that knows how to build it, yet still hit a financing wall if the lender isn’t convinced the project will reach commercial operation when something goes wrong.

That’s the nightmare Gage Kellogg, Managing Director of Renewable Energy at Partner Engineering & Science, helps us unpack in this Halloween-special Tactical Tuesday.

What happens if the EPC fails halfway through construction? Who keeps the subcontractors on site? Who funds the remaining work? And does having a performance bond actually mean someone is ready to finish the project?

Gage has spent more than two decades across development, project finance, construction, surety, and independent engineering. He explains the warning signs that show up before contractor failure, why a stalled project can become more expensive by the day, and how Partner’s Completion Commitment and SureBuild address different layers of completion risk.

    Expect to learn:

🔹 Why a technically capable EPC can still create a bankability problem

🔹 What a performance bond does, and what it may not solve

🔹 What needs to happen immediately when an EPC fails

🔹 How contractor default and borrower default create two different risks

If you’re developing, financing, or building solar and storage projects, this is one scary scenario worth solving before financial close.

  4. Solar + Farming, Part 2: How Developers Earn Lasting Community Trust | Lauren Glickman

    Season 19, Episode 978

    Show notes

Getting a solar project approved is one thing. Building enough trust that the community welcomes the next project is another.

In this Part 2 of Nico Johnson’s conversation with Lauren Glickman, the focus shifts from what solar and agriculture can accomplish together to what developers must do to make those benefits credible and durable.

Lauren explores why agrivoltaics cannot be treated as a one-size-fits-all practice. Grazing, crops, pollinator habitat, and other agricultural uses have very different economics, which means the policies and incentives designed to encourage them may need to differ as well. She also explains why permitting certainty and agricultural tax treatment can sometimes matter more than another financial subsidy.

But the larger lesson is about trust.

Lauren shares what can happen when agricultural commitments disappear after a project changes ownership, why farmers should be compensated for the expertise they bring to project development, and why showing up only when you need a permit means starting the relationship at a disadvantage.

For developers, the responsibility extends beyond getting today’s project built. Every promise kept or broken influences how that community responds to the next solar project.

If you missed Part 1, we made the case for solar + farming; in this Part 2, we ask what it takes to make that partnership last.

  5. Solar + Farming, Part 1: How Solar Can Help Save American Farmland | Lauren Glickman

    Season 19, Episode 977

    Show notes

For years, the solar industry has defended development on agricultural land by arguing that solar can help keep farms in the family and protect them from more permanent forms of development. Lauren Glickman thinks the opportunity may be bigger than that.

For nearly five years, Lauren has helped shepherd policy and communications at Encore Renewable Energy, one of the Northeast's leading community-scale renewable energy developers and a longtime advocate for brownfield redevelopment and more sustainable land use. In Part 1 of this two-part SunCast conversation, she makes the case for thinking about solar and farming as partners rather than competing land uses.https://encorerenewableenergy.com/trio-of-industry-veterans-join-encore-renewable-energy-to-ramp-up-efforts-in-the-new-year/

Lauren points to SEIA analysis showing that far more prime farmland is sitting fallow than is occupied by solar, and shares an Encore project in Vermont where a former gravel pit now generates electricity while providing pasture for a local sheep farmer.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Yqicoa505GBnymYf6JxUlQ2RTpyt-ObyVswPmWRDQb0/edit

Nico and Lauren explore what current agrivoltaics research is actually showing, where the evidence is still developing, how grazing and larger livestock can expand the opportunity, and why farmers themselves may be the most credible voices for explaining the benefits.

The bigger question is not simply how much farmland solar occupies. It is how much agricultural value solar can preserve, restore, or create.

And this is only Part 1. On Thursday, Lauren returns to tackle the harder half of the equation: how developers earn community trust, design better incentives, and make sure agricultural promises survive for the life of the project.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qhlN0RCydakhsmL-kpL7tCt4aGcPyVwweKcpONV9q98/edit

    Expect to Learn:

🔹 Why the 43-to-1 farmland statistic changes the solar debate

🔹 How Encore turned a former gravel pit into productive pastureland

🔹 What current agrivoltaics research reveals about crops and livestock

🔹 Why farmers must lead the conversation about solar's agricultural benefits

If we're serious about protecting American farmland, maybe it's time to stop asking how much land solar occupies and start asking how much agricultural value it creates.

Listen in for a different perspective on the future of solar and farming.

  6. 976: AI Can Pay 100X More for Power. Is This Clean Energy's Moment? | Hans Royal, David Siap, & Peter Kelly-Detwiler

    Season 19, Episode 976

    Show notes

AI is changing electricity demand faster than the grid was built to accommodate it. But the more interesting question may not be how much power data centers need.

It may be what that electricity is worth to them.

If AI workloads can economically justify power prices far above those of traditional industrial customers, that creates enormous economic headroom. Could that help pay for grid modernization, new capacity, flexibility and cleaner generation? And what happens if utilities, developers and investors build for demand that ultimately arrives more slowly, or not at all?

That is the question at the center of this episode.

Hans Royal began thinking about it while on sabbatical from Schneider Electric. He came across the traditional gas heat-rate concept and started asking whether there was a similar way to measure the conversion of electricity into AI intelligence. That led him to create Compute Heat Rate, a metric for estimating how much different AI workloads can afford to pay for power.

David Siap, Senior Manager for Energy at CREO, brings the other side of the equation. His work asks what it actually costs to add reliable capacity, how investors should evaluate the AI-driven demand boom, and which investments still make sense if the forecasts prove too optimistic.

Peter Kelly-Detwiler, co-founder of NorthBridge Energy Partners and a longtime demand-response operator, tests both ideas against the realities of power markets, interconnection, flexibility and ratepayer risk.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aX7-zUuysda7EhbCC2VPBRfufNCn9Lqh_pGV7NXZLpk/editEpisode 976: Thursday, October …

    Expect to learn:

🔹 Why AI may behave very differently from traditional industrial electricity customers

🔹 How Compute Heat Rate helps explain the economics of AI power demand

🔹 Why flexibility may depend more on grid access than electricity price alone

🔹 Which investments still look sensible if data center demand falls short of today's forecasts

🔹 How AI could become a source of capital for a stronger grid, and what has to go right for that to happen

If you're trying to understand where AI, power markets and clean energy investment are actually headed, this conversation gives you a much better map.

  7. 975: Powerful Branding: How to Build a Brand Your Team Can Actually Use | Aimee Tuck

    Season 19, Episode 975

    Show notes

A strong brand should do more than make your company recognizable. It should help your people understand what the company stands for, who it serves, and how to make better decisions as the business grows.

Aimee Tuck has spent more than 25 years helping clean energy companies do exactly that. She is the founder of Corbae Creative and author of Powerful Branding, a remarkably practical workbook that takes branding far beyond logos, colors, and websites.

In this conversation, Aimee and Nico dig into the mechanics behind the book: how to get a founder’s vision out of their head, interview employees and customers, uncover gaps between what leadership believes and what the market experiences, and decide which parts of a brand should remain fixed as the company evolves.

They also get very practical about the work most companies skip. Why should you interview former customers? What can an asset review reveal? How do customer profiles keep marketing focused without limiting sales? And what happens when company values become actual tools for hiring, performance conversations, and leadership decisions?

Aimee’s book provides the worksheets and process. This episode gives you a guided tour through some of the most useful parts.

If your company is growing, fundraising, entering a new market, or considering a rebrand, start here before approving the next logo or website.

  8. How to Make the Case for Solar + Storage to People Who Don’t Speak Energy

    Season 19, Episode 974

    Show notes

What if the difference between winning support and losing your audience isn’t better data, but knowing how to tell the story?

In this episode, the tables are turned once again. SunCast host Nico Johnson is the guest this time, joining as a featured communications expert alongside some of the industry’s most respected voices in policy and strategic communications.

Recorded live at the CHESSA Energize Summit, moderator Robin Dutta, Executive Director of CHESSA, brings together Molly Knoll of Align Energy Advisors, Jamie Nolan of Energy Empire, and Nico to tackle a deceptively simple question:

How do you make the case for solar and storage to people who don’t speak energy?

Molly starts with the facts behind how solar & storage can help directly address rising electricity costs. Then the conversation moves beyond the docket and into the work of influence.

How much information does your audience actually need? Who is the right messenger? When does data help, and when does a story work better? How do you earn enough relevance that someone actually wants to hear more?

The panel gets practical about story banks, trusted messengers, repetition, regulatory audiences, community conversations, and why saying less can often create more influence.

The opportunity is not to make energy less sophisticated.

It’s to become better at communicating it.

If you lead, sell, advocate, raise capital, influence policy, or simply need people to understand why your work matters, this conversation will make you better at making the case.

    Expect to Learn:

🔹 Why strong evidence still needs a story people care about

🔹 How electricity cost drivers differ across states and utilities

🔹 Why your most effective messenger might be someone else

🔹 How to earn attention before explaining solar and storage

If your team has the facts but keeps struggling to get traction, start here.

  9. 973: 11 Years of SunCast: What Changed, What We Missed, What’s Next | Nico Johnson & Josh Beck

    Season 19, Episode 973

    Show notes

After more than two decades working in clean energy and 11 years behind the mic at SunCast, Nico Johnson has had a front-row seat to an industry that looks radically different from the one he entered.

For this anniversary episode, Nico is joined by his business partner,Josh Beck, who shares the load in both questions and responses as they reflect on what changed, what surprised them, and what the next chapter of clean energy may require from founders, investors, and industry leaders.

The conversation moves through some of the shifts that have most reshaped the business of clean energy. Storage changed what developers can build, sell, and finance. Clean energy infrastructure matured into an asset class that more institutional investors understand and are comfortable backing. Data centers are creating enormous new demand while competing for the labor and equipment needed to build the power system. And AI is forcing leaders to ask what happens when we automate the very work where younger employees traditionally develop judgment.

    Expect to learn:

🔹 How storage changed the business model for developers, not just the technology stack

🔹 What founders often miss when moving from smaller investors to larger institutional checks

🔹 Why data center growth could intensify competition for labor, equipment, and project execution

🔹 How leaders can preserve apprenticeship and judgment as AI automates more junior-level work

Nico and Josh also share why they became business partners, what surfaced at the latest PowerCircle Summit, and what they are building next.

This is less a victory lap than a chance to ask a better question: after everything that changed, what should we be paying attention to now?

  10. How Smart Solar Developers Treat Land as Growth Capital | Laura Pagliarulo

    Season 19, Episode 972

    Show notes

Could the land beneath your solar project help finance the next one, without giving up equity in your company?

Laura Pagliarulo, CEO and co-founder of SolaREIT™, returns to SunCast to share what six years of financing solar and battery real estate have taught her about how developers grow without overextending themselves. Her company has financed real estate beneath projects representing nearly $8 billion in total value.

Laura explains how land purchases, lease purchases and land loans can provide flexible capital without selling equity in the developer's company. She describes repeat partners planning transactions six to eighteen months before a portfolio closes, with proceeds supporting interconnection deposits and other pipeline needs.

    Expect to learn:

🔹 How project real estate fits into a broader capital strategy

🔹 What experienced developers understand about their financing partners' limits

🔹 Why battery sites can carry substantial value on a small footprint

🔹 How Laura built a repeatable operating playbook while resisting distracting opportunities

The conversation also goes inside SolaREIT's own growth: raising $50 million of equity during COVID without an in-person investor meeting, earning institutional backing, and using AI to help the team draw on knowledge that previously lived in Laura's head.

For anyone building projects or scaling a clean energy business, this is a conversation about finding more options and knowing which ones to use.

  11. The Hidden Bottleneck Slowing Solar Automation | Nick de Vries, Matt Campbell & Frédéric Laure

    Season 19, Episode 971

    Show notes

If robotic automation is becoming inevitable in utility-scale solar, where does that thesis run into the realities of actually building a power plant?

That's the question behind today’s episode.

We start with Nick de Vries, CTO of Silicon Ranch, to ask what an owner actually wants from automation. Nick's answer sets the standard: the technology matters only if it improves safety, quality, repeatability, and the performance of an asset Silicon Ranch expects to own for decades.

Then Matt Campbell, CEO of Terabase, takes us into the field, where his team is applying manufacturing principles to solar construction. That's where an important constraint emerges. Robots can move and place modules remarkably well, but some of the work that experienced crews make look simple becomes much harder when every action has to be repeatable.

One deceptively small interface keeps surfacing: the point where the module actually attaches to the structure.

That leads Nico to Frédéric Laure, VP of Diversification at ARaymond North America, to understand why fastening, tolerances, torque, and component design become different problems once machines enter the workflow.

The bigger lesson isn't simply about robots or fasteners. It's about constructability.

If what we are seeking is manufacturing-level throughput in the field, more of the variability may need to be engineered out long before construction begins.

Listen in to hear where solar automation is working, where the real-world constraints still live, and what the industry may need to redesign next.

Paid partnership: This Tactical Tuesday was produced with support from ARaymond.

  12. 11 Years, 3 Pivots, and a Successful Exit | Jason Kaminsky

    Season 19, Episode 970

    Show notes

What does it actually take to build a company someone else eventually wants to buy?

For Jason Kaminsky and kWh Analytics, the answer was 11 years, three major pivots, a transition from COO to CEO, difficult layoffs, plenty of capital, and learning when to stop chasing good ideas so the company could execute on the right one.

Jason returns to SunCast after kWh Analytics' acquisition by Beazley to unpack the entrepreneurial journey behind the announcement. He shares how the company evolved from data and software into the Solar Revenue Put, then made the pivotal move into renewable energy property insurance.

But this isn't really an episode about selling a company. It's about building one.

    Expect to learn:

🔹 Why Jason believes learning to say "no" became one of his most important leadership skills

🔹 How kWh identified the property insurance opportunity that ultimately transformed the business

🔹 What changed when Jason moved from COO to CEO and had to trust his own decisions

🔹 How advisors, board members, employees, and transparency helped the company navigate an uncertain path

🔹 What Jason would do differently if he were starting again today

Jason's biggest lesson may also be the simplest: tell people what you're going to do, then do it. The acquisition was an outcome. The years spent building trust and learning to execute created the conditions for it.

If you're building a company you hope will someday outgrow you, this one's worth your time.

  13. Could Data Centers Pay for Your Rooftop Solar? | Barry Cinnamon

    Season 19, Episode 969

    Show notes

Data centers need enormous amounts of power, and apparently they need it fast. What if some of the outrageous sums of money they’re willing to spend to get that power went directly toward putting solar and batteries on homes and businesses?

That’s the idea Barry Cinnamon wants to pressure-test in today’s Tactical Tuesday on SunCast.

Last week, Barry compared the dramatically different costs of solar and storage in Australia and the U.S. This week, he moves from diagnosing the problem to proposing a solution: use data center demand as a new source of capital for distributed energy.

His concept is a behind-the-meter feed-in tariff that would allow data centers to help fund rooftop solar and storage. Customers get a faster payback. Data centers get access to new, dispatchable capacity. And more power gets built without relying entirely on the traditional utility infrastructure pipeline.

It’s still a concept, and Barry is clear that the regulatory and market mechanics still need to be worked out. But the question underneath it is worth exploring: Could one of the biggest new sources of electricity demand also become a catalyst for distributed energy?

    Expect to learn:

🔹 How Barry envisions data center dollars flowing to rooftop solar and storage

🔹 Why distributed energy could potentially add capacity faster than traditional infrastructure

🔹 What has to happen for a behind-the-meter feed-in tariff to actually work

🔹 Why plug-and-play solar could make distributed generation accessible to millions more customers

Barry even breaks out a mason jar, walnuts, and peanuts to explain the idea. You may want YouTube for this one.

  14. How to Make Better Building Technology Investable | Dermot & Aiden Sweeny

    Season 19, Episode 968

    Show notes

Buildings consume an enormous amount of energy. We have plenty of technologies that could make them perform better. So why is the real estate industry often so slow to adopt them?

Dermot Sweeny has spent decades confronting that problem from the architect’s side. When he couldn’t convince clients to try a radically different approach to office design, he bought an older building and proved it himself. More than 7 million square feet later, that willingness to test ideas in real buildings has become central to how Dermot and his son Aiden evaluate new technology.

In this episode, Nico explores how they turn promising ideas into technologies that developers are actually willing to use, including:

🔹 Why real estate’s resistance to change makes real-world proof so important

🔹 How a 2–4% increase in upfront cost can produce 30–50% reductions in energy costs

🔹 Using buildings as proving grounds for new technologies before asking clients to take the risk

🔹 Where building-integrated solar, wastewater heat recovery, advanced windows, energy monitoring, and smarter HVAC fit into the equation

🔹 Why occupant comfort, fresh air, daylight, and flexibility can be economic advantages—not just sustainability features

🔹 How lower operating expenses can translate into higher real-estate value

For energy entrepreneurs trying to get new technology deployed, this conversation offers a useful look at what happens between having a better idea and convincing someone to actually put it in a building.

Hit play to learn why the building itself may be one of your biggest untapped energy assets.

  15. Why U.S. Solar Costs 2–3x More Than Australia | Barry Cinnamon

    Season 19, Episode 967

    Show notes

In Australia, residential solar and storage can be installed for about $2 a watt. In the U.S., a comparable system can cost more than twice that.

    Why?

Barry Cinnamon was curious enough to go to Australia and investigate. What he found challenges the simple explanation that America's solar price gap comes down to permitting, labor, and other “soft costs.”

Australia offers a useful counterfactual: what can solar cost under a very different set of market and policy choices? And which of those choices would we actually want to make in America?

In this Tactical Tuesday, Barry and Nico unpack the cost stack and the tradeoffs behind it, from tariffs and domestic manufacturing to financing, interconnection, incentives, and policy stability.

    Expect to learn:

🔹 Why Australian solar and storage can cost dramatically less than comparable U.S. systems

🔹 Why soft costs explain only part of the price difference

🔹 How tariffs, financing, manufacturing policy, and regulation affect what customers ultimately pay

🔹 The harder question underneath the comparison: are we optimizing for the cheapest energy, domestic manufacturing, American jobs, or some combination of all three?

Australia isn't necessarily a blueprint for the U.S. But it gives us a fascinating benchmark for asking what we're paying for, why we're paying for it, and which tradeoffs we're willing to make.

    Show notes

When Charlotte Meerstadt put solar on her Amsterdam home, the numbers made sense.

Then Charlotte moved to the U.S. and rented out the apartment. The solar panels kept doing exactly what they were supposed to do: producing cheap, clean power. But, while the tenant received the lower utility bill, Charlotte still owned the panels and had no clear way to capture the savings her asset was creating.

That mismatch revealed a bigger problem hiding across rental housing and distributed energy: the person who can invest in clean energy is often not the same person who gets the financial benefit.

Under 1% of rental rooftops have solar.

Now put that next to 49 million rental units in the U.S., including roughly 23 million apartments, and you start to see the size of the opportunity Charlotte Meerstadt stumbled into.

In this episode, Charlotte, Founder and CEO of Fram Energy, joins Nico to explain how she turned that insight into a company helping property owners, developers, and energy asset owners measure, bill, and collect the value their projects produce.

She also shares how early customer conversations shaped the product, why real-world complexity can become a moat, and what she had to unlearn as an engineer to become a founder.

    Expect to learn:

🔹 Why solar savings get complicated when owners and tenants try to split the value

🔹 How meter data can become revenue asset owners can collect

🔹 Why billing, tariffs, permissions, and customer trust matter after the system is built

🔹 How customers pulled Fram from rental solar into larger energy transactions

🔹 Why Charlotte believes founders should keep removing themselves from the equation

This episode might help you see the business model problems that can hold back otherwise strong projects.

  17. 3 Lessons From Germany’s Plug-In Solar Boom | Stephan Scherer

    Season 19, Episode 965

    Show notes

Germany has turned plug-in solar from a fringe idea into a mainstream energy product found in millions of homes. And the biggest lessons for the U.S. aren't really about solar panels.

    They're about making solar easier.

In this Tactical Tuesday, CraftStrom Co-Founder and CEO Stephan Scherer shares what nearly a decade in the European plug-in solar market taught him about how a new energy category actually scales.

Simplicity matters as much as technology. Germany had to simplify registration and remove requirements that made a supposedly plug-and-play product harder to adopt.

Policy needs to separate different problems. Electrical safety inside the home and how much power a system exports to the grid aren't the same thing—and Stephan argues that conflating them could unnecessarily limit the U.S. market.

And perhaps most importantly, the category scales when it becomes easy to buy and easy to understand. In Germany, plug-in solar eventually moved beyond specialist channels and onto mainstream retail shelves.

This is a focused excerpt from my longer SunCast conversation with Stephan. If you want to understand who's actually buying plug-in solar in the U.S., why the ideal customer surprised even him, and whether solar could eventually become something we buy like an appliance, the full episode goes much deeper.

  18. Why the Best Energy Technology Doesn't Always Win | Sass Peress

    Season 19, Episode 964

    Show notes

The best technology does not always win.

Sass Peress has spent nearly four decades learning why. Since entering solar in 1988, he has built companies, introduced new technologies, sold hundreds of thousands of solar products, backed ideas that worked, backed at least one that did not, and learned firsthand what separates an exciting invention from something customers will actually buy.

One of his most useful distinctions is between “bleeders” and “leaders.” Being first can mean paying for every lesson the rest of the market gets to learn from you. The companies that survive know how to stay tenacious without becoming stubborn, change direction when the evidence demands it, and stop falling in love with their own technology.

Sass and Nico dig into the early entrepreneurial experiences that shaped him, why “claims are packaging,” what selling 250,000 solar chargers taught him about finding the right customer, and why great salespeople sell outcomes rather than features or pain.

They also explore supercapacitors, the changing power needs of AI data centers, and why evaluating any energy technology requires asking a deceptively simple question: under what conditions does this actually work?

Ultimately, Sass keeps returning to an even simpler standard for entrepreneurs:

Say what you know to be true.

If you build, sell, finance, or evaluate emerging energy technology, this conversation is full of lessons earned the expensive way.

  19. How Exact Solar Keeps Growing in a Shrinking Market | Aaron Nichols

    Season 19, Episode 963

    Show notes

While many solar companies are fighting to stay afloat, Exact Solar is flying.

After growing 23% and then 50% in the previous two years, the Pennsylvania installer says it's up another 73% so far this year. That kind of growth in this market raises an obvious question: what are they doing differently?

Aaron Nichols joins Nico once more to unpack the answer, and it isn't just one clever marketing tactic.

Exact has built a growth flywheel around learning. Completed projects become proof the sales team can use. Customer questions become content. Pleased customers become referral sources. Advertising results inform the next campaign. And years of accumulated experience are increasingly becoming searchable institutional knowledge that helps the team respond faster and sell smarter.

Aaron breaks down exactly how Exact brought more of its advertising in-house, built systems to stay in front of past customers, turned community partnerships into new opportunities, and used AI to make what the company already knows dramatically easier to find. He also explains how that same bias toward learning and adaptation helped Exact respond when the policy landscape changed directions right beneath them.

The bigger lesson goes well beyond solar marketing: the better Exact gets at learning from what works, the easier it becomes to keep growing.

    Expect to learn:

🔹 How to turn completed work into reusable sales and marketing assets

🔹 Why capturing institutional knowledge can become a competitive advantage

🔹 How Exact turns customers, content, referrals, and advertising into a reinforcing growth loop

🔹 Where AI creates leverage—and where Aaron believes human creativity still wins

🔹 Why Aaron believes “the best shortcut is no shortcuts”

If growth feels harder than it used to, Aaron's approach offers a useful question: are you getting smarter with every customer you serve?

  20. What If We Paid Households to Power the Grid? | Ari Matusiak

    Season 19, Episode 962

    Show notes

America needs more power. Data centers are accelerating demand, utilities are planning billions of dollars in new infrastructure, and households will ultimately help pay for much of it.

But what if we invested some of that money in the households themselves?

Ari Matusiak, co-founder and CEO of Rewiring America, makes the case that homes can become a meaningful part of America’s energy infrastructure—and that households should be compensated for the value they provide to the grid.

In this wide-ranging conversation, Ari and Nico explore the rise of Homegrown Energy, why the old equilibrium between utilities and customers is breaking down, how hyperscalers could help fund household energy upgrades, and where regulators and utilities are already testing what’s possible.

They also get into the harder question underneath all of it: who gets to participate in the value created as we build out the grid?

For Ari, the opportunity is bigger than electrification. If households can provide real value to the grid, the question becomes whether we continue treating them primarily as customers, or start investing in them as part of the solution.

That could create a very different deal: more capacity for a power-hungry economy, more flexibility for the grid, and tangible value flowing back to the households helping make it possible.
