Supplement Marketing for Scaling DTC Brands
This show helps nutritional supplement brands scale to 8 and 9 figure businesses and make a bigger social impact.
Bobby Hewitt, is the founder of Creative Thirst, a supplement marketing agency that has helped dietary supplement brands grow for over 13 years. He’s built a framework around how people buy supplements. Because, people don't buy supplements the way they buy other products, and if you market your supplement brand like a regular e-commerce store, you're leaving money on the table.
This is the show for supplement brand founders and in-house marketing teams who want to scale their direct-to-consumer sales without scaling their team.
If you run a supplement, functional food, nutraceutical, or beauty brand selling direct to consumers, the rules of marketing are different for you. This podcast will provide tips, strategies, supplement trends, and ecommerce growth hacks, for entrepreneurs, owners, founders, CEOs, marketing VPs, and online marketers of supplements, vitamins, peptides, pet supplements, and skin care products.
This podcast is for you if you find yourself asking questions such as…
- What is the average LTV (Lifetime Value) to CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) ratio for a $20M+ supplement brand?
- How to scale Meta and Google ad spend past $500k per month for dietary supplements?
- What are the highest-converting upsell funnels for supplement brands?
- What metrics do private equity firms look for when buying a $30M+ supplement brand?
- How to manage cash flow cycles when scaling supplement inventory from 10k to 500k units?
- What is a healthy EBITDA margin for a scaling a nutritional supplement business targeting $50M in revenue?
- How to get around the Meta ads fatigue of $20k+ daily spend?
- How to bypass ad platform restrictions and compliance bans on health claims for scaling ad sets?
- What is the optimal breakdown between prospecting, retargeting, and retention budget for a $30M supplement brand?
- How to reduce churn rates below 5% for a high-volume monthly supplement subscription program?
- What are the most effective post-purchase cross-sell workflows for increasing second-box conversion rates?
- How to design a subscription model to maximize upfront cash flow?
- What performance-based equity or profit-share models attract tier-1 celebrity brand ambassadors?

Supplement Brand Positioning: What Your Best Customer Is Actually Buying
Episode 160
Show notes
Supplement marketing usually focuses on what the product does, but in this episode we break down why customers really buy supplements and how building your brand around that feeling drives customer retention and loyalty.
Ask most supplement operators what their customer buys and you'll hear the functional answer. Energy. Digestion. Focus. Healthy aging. But that's never what the money is really for. People reach for a feeling, and the bottle is just the thing they trust to carry them to it.
Naming the emotion is step one. Rebuilding positioning, the offer, the retention engine, and the upsells so every layer delivers that same feeling is where the real money is, and it's where most scaled brands quietly fall apart, with four layers pulling four different directions.
Premium pricing and real loyalty don't come from a better product. They come from being the only brand that gets someone to a feeling nothing else on the shelf can.

How to get your page to scale with cold traffic
Episode 159
Show notes
Some pages have a strange kind of ceiling. They perform at low spend, so nothing looks wrong, and then they collapse the second you try to grow them. You add budget, you widen the audience, and the numbers fall off a cliff, so you retreat to the spend where it held.
Testing your way out doesn't work here, because the thing capping the page isn't the offer. It's a belief conflict, a spot where the page quietly asks a stranger to believe something they can't, and your most ready buyers skate right past it while everyone colder walks away.
This episode breaks down the three conflicts that quietly cap a page, how to spot the exact lines where a skeptic checks out, and why the page arguing with itself is a growth problem and not a conversion one. I also take on the big-brand instinct to sanitize every claim into oblivion, and why an empty page and an overhyped one fail a cold buyer for the very same reason.
Fix the belief and the ceiling moves. That's usually where the next leg of growth has been hiding.

Why Your Winning Funnel Stopped Winning
Episode 158
Show notes
Every supplement brand at scale has watched it happen. The funnel that carried the business quietly starts slipping. Conversion softens, acquisition costs drift up, and nobody can say why, because nothing broke. The copy is the same copy that worked.
That's the whole trap. It didn't break. It aged. And in this episode I explain the real reason with a framework most people have never had applied to a dead funnel, which is that your market climbed a level and your message stayed put. The same words that printed money are now pitched at a market that moved past them, so they clear nothing.
I get into why chasing fresh creative only buys you a little time, why your own success is what accelerated the decay, and the three stages a winner can age into, so you can diagnose exactly which one killed yours and know precisely what your next message has to do. Not repaint it. Rebuild it one level up.
Those who keep scaling aren't the ones who find a winner. They're the ones who climb the ladder on purpose, before the market drags them up it late.

The Four Ways Supplement Subscriptions Die
Episode 157
Show notes
Most operators stare at one blended churn number and have no idea what it's actually telling them. I get to see the subscription curves behind a lot of supplement brands at once, and the same four decay patterns keep showing up, each one a different problem hiding inside the same ugly number.
There's the cliff, where people bail right after the first order, and it's never a product problem. It's impatient buyers running out of hope, and buyers who just wanted the discount and never planned to stay.
There's the ninety-day wall, where they decide if they felt enough to keep paying, and where a customer who got results but never noticed cancels just as fast as one who felt nothing.
There's the slow bleed, the quiet one that never sets off an alarm, where your product worked so well they stopped feeling the problem, so they stopped paying for the fix.
And there's the price-shock spike, the cancels that cluster around a billing date and have nothing to do with the product at all.
Four patterns. With four different causes. And four different fixes. And most brands grab a random retention tactic and wonder why it does nothing, because they never diagnosed which one they're actually fighting.
The diagnosis is the whole game. This episode shows you how to read your own curve and finally name it.
Because people don't buy supplements the way they buy other products. And they don't quit them the same way either.

The One Lever That Moves Every Number in Your Supplement Business at Once
Episode 156
Show notes
In this episode, I make the case that at scale the offer is the product. Not the powder, not the capsule, the offer is the thing your customer actually evaluates and says yes to, and it's the thing that sets your economics. Two brands with nearly identical products can run completely different businesses purely because one engineered a better offer. I break down why the offer is the only lever that moves your average order value, your lifetime value, and your cost to acquire a customer all at the same time, when every other lever only pushes one. Then I get into the part most operators never connect, that a great offer isn't a pricing exercise, it's the four buying forces engineered into structure. Trust in the guarantee, hope in the commitment framing, desire in the bundle. And I explain why this is specifically the untapped lever at your revenue tier, because your offer got frozen at the moment it first worked and everyone's been optimizing around it ever since, while the market it was built for kept getting more sophisticated. Pull the offer out, look at it on its own, and you'll usually find the growth you've been chasing in creative and formula was hiding here the whole time.

Compliance at Scale Is a Systems Problem, Not a Copy Problem
Episode 155
Show notes
At a few hundred thousand a year, compliance is a copy question. Can I say this or not. Once you're doing millions, that question is the wrong one, and if it's still how you think about compliance, you're leaving growth on the table and carrying risk you can't see. In this episode, I skip the structure-function versus disease claim basics you already know cold and get into how compliance actually works as a strategic system at scale. The core idea is that your claim ceiling isn't set by the rules, because everyone has the same rules. It's set by your proof assets and your risk architecture, and both are things you can build. I break down the four moving parts.

The Refund Problem Nobody Talks About
Episode 154
Show notes
What Decide Whether a Customer Keeps Your Supplement or Sends It Back?
Your refund rate is a marketing metric wearing a customer service hat. Most supplement founders treat refunds and chargebacks as a back-end problem to manage with a good support team and a clear return policy. But most of your refunds are decided long before the customer ever asks for one. They're decided at the moment of the sale, by the exact words you used to make it. In this episode, I break down why your copy is a filter that selects your customer, and how leaning on pain-based away language quietly fills your customer base with the impatient, pain-fleeing buyers most likely to want their money back.

Supplement Brand Innovation Models : Five Ways to Win a Crowded Category
Episode 153
Show notes
Most supplement founders think innovation means finding a gap nobody's filled. But an empty space in the market is usually empty for a reason. The brands that innovate well do the opposite. They find a category that's already winning and pick a smart angle onto it. In this episode, I walk through five ways to do that, ranked from least defensible to most. Product innovation and the delivery-system trap everyone runs to first. Formulation expansion and the claims arms race it can turn into. Category expansion, where merging two spaces resets the market's resistance and lets you be early again. Form factor, the format shift that wins on hope and adherence. And audience, the reposition that's the most defensible move of all because a real relationship with an underserved group can't be copied. Then I tie all five back to the four buying forces, because innovation that scales is always innovation that moves a force, and the clever stuff that moves nothing is why so many launches quietly die. Find the wave, pick your most defensible angle, and make sure it moves a force.

Retention Isn't an Email Problem For Supplement Brands
Episode 152
Show notes
Retention isn't an email problem. In supplements it's a full funnel problem, and I'll show you why. In this episode I discuss the payback period problem in supplements. The reorder gets decided long before anyone sends a retention email. I break down what's really happening in your customer's head around day thirty, why the first sale needs all four supplement buying forces but the second one runs on hope and belief, and five changes that shorten payback. Four of them happen before your customer ever takes the first dose.

The Next Supplement Wave Pt 7: Pick an Edge or Die in the Middle
Episode 151
Show notes
The finale. Six episodes studying the brands winning right now, all pointed at the only question that matters for your business.
What's coming next, and how do you get in front of it. I make five real predictions. Generic education dies while owned education becomes a moat. Personalization jumps from the three-minute quiz to your actual bloodwork, and whoever scales that builds the next giant. Discovery moves to AI recommendation, which makes generic brands invisible and specific brands unmissable. The four forces stay exactly the same while the terrain transforms completely, so the winners build desire, hope, trust, and belief on brand new ground. And a counter-wave of radical human simplicity rises against all the tech, proving both edges win and only the middle dies. Every arrow points the same way. Get specific, get defensible, own something, and pick an edge before the next wave decides for you.

The Next Supplement Wave Pt 6: Borrowed Trust vs. Owned Trust: The Needed Playbook
Episode 150
Show notes
Most supplement brands borrow their trust. A doctor on the site, someone else's ingredient study, the same certifications every competitor has. Needed didn't borrow. They ran their own clinical study, on their own product, to prove their own claim. And they used it to win the hardest buyer in the entire industry, the pregnant woman.
That's Needed, as in the word. Find them at thisisneeded.com.
In this episode:
• Why borrowed trust is fragile, and owned trust is the real moat
• How Needed attacked the belief that standard prenatals are good enough
• Why a bold claim to a skeptical buyer is dangerous unless your proof is bulletproof
• The honest risk of running a study on your own product
• How to manufacture your own trust even without a clinical-trial budgetBecause supplements are an act of faith. And in the one category where proof matters most, the brand that owns its proof steps outside the scrum entirely.

The Next Supplement Wave Pt 5: How Seed Turned One Product Into a Moat
Episode 149
Show notes
In this episode, I break down the difference between education that commoditizes you and education that makes you the only reasonable choice, using Seed as the example.
How they teach the market why most probiotics fail instead of why probiotics are good, so their education disqualifies the competition instead of growing the category.
How they own the language of quality so every comparison quietly tilts in their favor. And how Seed University turned thousands of influencers into a moat that gets stronger the more they scale, rather than a message that gets diluted.
I also get honest about the risk of living by the science, because when you build a brand on rigor, critics will hold you to it. Then I give you the exact audit to run on your own content to find out whether you're building a moat or funding a leak. Because supplements are a trust-dependent, skeptical purchase, and education is one of the only ways to earn the sale, which means getting it wrong is uniquely expensive.

The Next Supplement Wave Pt 4: How Mars Men Hit $100 Million in 18 Months
Episode 148
Show notes
The last two brands in this series won on lifestyle, identity, and belief. Soft, cultural, aspirational stuff. This one wins on the total opposite.
Mars Men went from bootstrapped to a hundred million dollar revenue run rate in under eighteen months, profitably, serving over four hundred thousand customers.
In this episode, I break down why the problem you choose to build around determines how hard your marketing has to work, and the difference between a low-intent problem you have to manufacture urgency for and a high-intent problem where the desire is already screaming.
I get into why the market's squeamishness about naming an uncomfortable problem is your opening, and then
I walk the economics that make this whole model scale. How a high-intent problem creates efficient acquisition, how a chronic problem creates natural retention, and how those two things together drive the lifetime value math that lets you outspend your competition and still profit.
I also get honest about the risk, because when you build an aggressive direct response machine on a scientifically contentious promise, the whole thing lives or dies on whether the product actually delivers.
Because people don't buy supplements the way they buy other products, and sometimes the biggest opportunity is the hard problem everyone else is avoiding.

The Next Supplement Wave Pt 3: How Primal Queen Sells
Episode 147
Show notes
Primal Queen is scaling fast, with women buying it on subscription and staying.
So how do they do it?
In this episode, I break down the single most underrated move in supplement marketing, which is riding a belief you didn't have to build. Primal Queen didn't create the ancestral nutrition movement.
They found a belief that already had momentum and built the product for the people who already held it. I get into why changing what someone believes is the most expensive marketing there is, and why confirming what they already believe is the cheapest and most durable growth you've got.
Then I break down exactly how they execute it. Wrapping the belief in the Queen identity and movement, using a like-supports-like mechanism that fits the belief even though the science is shaky, and still bringing real trust signals to satisfy the functional mind.
I also get honest about the risk, because when belief outruns proof, the critics come, and when you tie your brand to a trend, you're exposed to its ceiling. Because people don't buy supplements the way they buy other products, and health is the most belief-saturated purchase there is.

The Next Supplement Wave Pt 2: How Arrae Out-Positioned an Entire Category
Episode 146
Show notes
There's a brand in the women's wellness space whose tagline is worth more than their entire formula.
Not because the formula is bad, but because the words are doing more of the selling than the ingredients are.
The brand is Arrae, the line is targeted supplements for life's unsexy problems, and that brand went from nothing to nine figures in one of the most crowded corners of the entire supplement world.
In this episode, I break that line down piece by piece and show you why it works at a level most supplement marketing never even reaches. How the word unsexy creates instant recognition and takes the shame off the table. How the word targeted plants a flag on precision in a category drowning in vague, do-everything wellness. And how the aspirational brand wrapped around both hands the buyer an identity she'll pay a premium to step into.
Then I give you the exact exercise to find your own version, the three ways brands botch it, and why sanding the edges off sharp positioning to feel safe is the fastest way to become invisible.
Because people don't buy supplements the way they buy other products, and in a market this crowded, the words you wrap around your product are often the whole ballgame.

Supplement Wave Pt 1: The Shift
Episode 145
Show notes
The last wave of supplement brands already won. OLLY, Goli, AG1, Grüns, IM8.
In this episode, I kick off a new series that looks forward instead of backward, at the brands scaling right now, before their exit moment. I make the case that the next wave isn't winning on format innovation at all. It's winning on positioning and specificity. And I give you the three buckets these breakout brands sort into, so you can figure out which one you're actually in.
Plus why a sophisticated market and a rising cost to acquire a customer are both punishing brands that try to talk to everyone, and why going narrow is now the engine of growth instead of a limit on it. Because people don't buy supplements the way they buy other products, and the brands winning right now understand that better than their competition does.

How IM8 Built a $10 Million a Month Brand: What the Winners Got Right Series Pt 5
Episode 143
Show notes
I usually tell supplement founders that leading with science is the wrong move, because science only speaks to half of the buying decision.
So why is a brand that leads with science harder than almost anyone winning at a level this industry has rarely seen? IM8, co-founded by David Beckham, went from launch to roughly ten million dollars a month in its first year. Everyone credits the celebrity. But celebrity gets you attention, not three hundred and fifty thousand customers and the kind of retention that builds a real business.
In this episode, I break down the deliberate trust play underneath IM8, why trust is the hardest of the four supplement buying forces, and the sophistication insight that explains exactly when leading with science is a fatal mistake and when it is the only thing that works. Plus what a celebrity co-founder actually does in a trust structure, beyond the obvious answer of reach, and how to find your own version of hard-to-copy trust.

Why Grüns Sold to Unilever for a Billion Dollars in Under Three Years: What the Winners Got Right Series Pt 4
Episode 142
Show notes
Grüns went from launch to a reported billion dollar exit in under three years when Unilever acquired them in 2026.
Everyone credits the gummy. People don't like chugging green powder, so Grüns made it taste good and easy, and that was that. But if the whole thing were just gummies and taste, any competitor could copy the format and win. Plenty have tried. The gummy is the visible part.
The thing underneath it, the part that is actually hard to copy, is what this episode is about. In this episode, I break down the difference between a format and a mechanism of hope, why Grüns moved the mechanism of hope out of the ingredients and into the experience itself, and how the founder's own words about adherence give the whole strategy away.
I'll also show you why this is different from what AG1 did, the expensive mistake most brands make when they try to copy this, and how to find the specific reason your own buyer has lost hope so you can build the mechanism that speaks to it.

The Secret AG1 Playbook: What the Winners Got Right Series Pt 3
Episode 141
Show notes
You can't change a deep core belief.
Argue with it and you lose, every time, because the pulling force is too strong. But you can do something else, and the brand in this episode did it better than almost anyone in the history of the category.
AG1 built a six hundred million dollar a year business on a single product by reframing what a healthy person believes about their own supplement routine. Instead of selling one more thing to add to the stack, they replaced the stack. Instead of being someone who fails to maintain twelve supplements, you became someone who has their foundation handled with one.
In this episode,I break down the difference between changing a belief and reframing one, why the Athletic Greens to AG1 rebrand reveals the entire strategy, and how the four supplement buying forces all pointed at the same core idea. Plus the practical belief work any supplement brand can do right now to find their own reframe.
