  1. Kids Incorporated: Why Disney Channel Killed Its Longest Running Show

    Show notes

Kids Incorporated hit Disney Channel screens in 1986, ran back-to-back with MMC every weekday, and quietly became the longest-running show in the network's history. But Disney didn't own it. MGM did. And when a theme park deal went sour between the two companies, one of these shows got the full Disney machine behind it — and the other got buried.

Everybody remembers the All New Mickey Mouse Club. Britney. Justin. Christina. That legendary 90s star factory. But what if it wasn't the original?

Kids Incorporated ran for nine seasons on Disney Channel. It launched the careers of Fergie, Martika, Mario Lopez, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. It was the network's longest-running show. And then it just... disappeared.

Were you a Mickey Mouse Club kid or a Kids Incorporated kid? Or did you watch 'em both? Let me know in the comments.

Next up: Saved by the Bell's Disney origins — same era, same star-making machine. Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss it.

  2. Mickey Mouse Club: The Show that made the 2000's

    Show notes

Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera, and Keri Russell all got their start on the same Disney soundstage. Here's how one show accidentally built pop culture's biggest names.

The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, or MMC, ran from 1989 to 1996 on the Disney Channel, filmed at Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando. What started as a way to fill a new theme park's soundstages ended up launching some of the biggest music and movie stars of the 2000s.

In this episode, we trace the line from Saturday morning theater clubs in 1929 to Britney topping the charts in 1999 — and show how that same casting formula might be coming back with the 2026 Disney+ reboot.

Next time: Disney's connection to Kids Incorporated — another show that quietly trained a generation of stars.

  4. Northern Lights: The DCOM they Don't Want you to see! Featuring Allison McClain Merrill

    Show notes

Disney Channel has made over 100 Original Movies — Halloweentown, High School Musical, Descendants. But there's one they pretend never happened. The very first one.

Northern Lights premiered on August 23rd, 1997. It stars Academy Award winner Diane Keaton. It was executive produced by Meg Ryan. And Disney wants you to forget it exists. It's not on Disney+. It's not on YouTube. It's practically lost media.

So I had to find out why. I tracked down a pop culture historian who'd actually seen it. I dug through the Disney Encyclopedia. I cross-referenced old TV schedules. I found a VHS tape from 1997. And what I discovered is a story about branding, rebranding, and how a channel accidentally created its first DCOM before it even knew what a DCOM was.

  5. Disney's Coke vs. Pepsi War... And the One Place Pepsi Still Won

    Show notes

Coke and Pepsi didn't just fight in grocery stores. For 35 years, the real battlefield was Disneyland.

Before Coca-Cola became the only soda in the happiest place on Earth, the park was split down the middle. Pepsi got Frontierland and Adventureland. Coke owned Main Street and Fantasyland. And one counter in Tomorrowland sold both at the same time.

Then Pepsi called Walt Disney. And the result? One of the most iconic rides in theme park history.

This is the story of how two soda giants fought for the mouse — the World's Fair deal that changed everything, the 1990 takeover that locked Pepsi out for good, and the one place on earth you can still find a Pepsi hiding inside a Disney park.

  6. Disney Corporate Sponsorships That Accidentally Created Icons

    Show notes

From a purple dragon born out of a Kodak sponsorship to the world's most popular tortilla chip — sometimes the best Disney magic happens when nobody planned it…..and a little Corporate Sponsorship Synergy!

In this video, we're looking at four accidental icons that only exist because a corporation made a deal with Disney: Figment, Orange Bird, Dole Whip, and Doritos. All started as products of a Disney Parks sponsorship. All ended up way bigger than the contracts that created them.

Kodak, the company that helped us get Figment, was one of Disneyland's Original 33 sponsors — the companies that made the park possible in 1955. I'm launching a Patreon-exclusive series called Club 33 that digs into every single one of them. If you want to go deeper on the corporate histories that built Disneyland.

  7. McDonald's, Disney, and the 90's Happy Meal Battle!

    Show notes

McDonald's said no to Disney. Burger King said yes. And a 90s fast food war was born.

Before Happy Meal toys and Disney-themed cups became background noise, a $40 million promotion disaster, a Splash Mountain delay, and a scrappy competitor nearly changed the entire landscape of Disney marketing. This is the story of how two burger giants fought for the right to put a mouse in your kid's meal — and how that rivalry shaped the toys, the nostalgia, and the partnerships we still see today.

  8. Kenny Ortega: From Dancer to Disney Legend

    Show notes

He's the man behind Descendants, High School Musical, Hocus Pocus, and Newsies, but Kenny Ortega's journey to becoming a Disney Legend started long before Mickey Mouse called. This is the story of the creative force Disney keeps turning to when they need to remind audiences why they fell in love with Disney magic.

From starting out as a dancer in touring productions of Hair to choreographing music videos for Madonna and Elton John, stadium tours for Michael Jackson, and the iconic "Twist and Shout" sequence in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Kenny Ortega was shaping pop culture for a decade before Disney ever picked up the phone. When they finally did in 1988, it kicked off a 30-year partnership that would define childhoods for millions.

What makes Ortega different is that he was never just a company man. He brought rock tours, Olympic ceremonies, and fountain choreography from the Vegas strip into everything he made for Disney.

  9. When Disney Made the Shared Universe Official

    Show notes

Disney Connected its own worlds: Descendants, Once Upon a Time, House of Mouse and More!

For years, Disney fans have obsessively hunted for Easter eggs, building "Grand Unification Theories" to prove that every animated classic is connected. But while fans were busy connecting dots in the background, Disney was quietly building something much bigger: an official shared universe.

In this episode of Synergy Loves Company, we’re moving beyond the hidden cameos and looking at the times Disney actually put their characters together on screen. We start with the cult-classic Saturday morning crossover, House of Mouse, where Mickey played host to every era of Disney animation under one roof. We’ll explore the high-stakes world of Once Upon a Time, where ABC transformed Storybrooke into a live-action landing spot for modern fairytales. Then, we look at the massive success of Descendants, the franchise that turned the next generation of villains into a multi-million dollar synergy machine.

From the early days of Disney on Ice to the boardroom decisions that created the Disney Princess franchise, we’re breaking down how fan demand forced Disney to finally admit the truth: the shared universe is real.

  10. The Disney Story of America’s Bicentennial

    Show notes

From the tracks of the American Freedom Train to the catchy tunes of Schoolhouse Rock and the massive scale of America on Parade, Disney didn't just join the Bicentennial—they touched more celebrations than you know, and shaped how we Celebrate the Fourth of July.

In 1976, America was a mess. Between the fallout of Vietnam, the Watergate scandal, and a crushing energy crisis, the country wasn’t exactly in a party mood for its 200th birthday. But while the federal government’s official plans were falling apart, Disney was quietly building a celebration that would define the Bicentennial for millions.

In this episode, we explore how Disney Connects to the Bicentennial—from the planning of Liberty Square to the massive "America on Parade" that ran simultaneously on both coasts. We’ll look at the "Disney DNA" in Schoolhouse Rock, the moving walkways of the American Freedom Train, and how a 1976 science expo at Kennedy Space Center paved the way for EPCOT’s Horizons.

Plus, we look ahead to America 250 to see how Disney is using its 1976 playbook to celebrate the nation’s next big milestone.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    - The Bicentennial Crisis:Why the official World’s Fair plan failed and how grassroots "Bicentennial Communities" took over.

    - Liberty Square’s Secret History: Why Disney’s Colonial land was actually a decade in the making.

    - The Freedom Train: The Disney legends who helped a 26-car steam locomotive bring history to 48 states.

    - Schoolhouse Rock: How Michael Eisner and the Bicentennial "History Rock" series created a Saturday morning legacy.

    - Third Century America: The forgotten NASA expo that inspired one of EPCOT’s most beloved pavilions, Horizons.

    - America on Parade: The logistics of running the same massive parade in two states at the exact same time.

  11. Does Disney finally understand how to handle the Muppets?

    Show notes

Disney, The Muppets, and Jim Henson

Disney just closed the Muppets Courtyard in Hollywood Studios to make way for Monstropolis. But while Muppet Vision 3D, Jim Henson’s Last Muppet project, is gone, the Muppets aren't leaving Hollywood Studios; they’ve moved into the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster.

Is this a promotion or a demotion? To understand what’s happening today, we have to look back to the deal that almost happened in 1989.

In this episode, we explore the history and connection between Jim Henson, George Lucas, and Michael Eisner. We dive into the the handshake between Eisner and Henson that almost changed Disney forever, the tragic timing of Jim Henson's final project, and why it took Disney 14 years to finally close the deal.

In this video, we look at:

The commonalities between Jim Henson and Walt Disney.

The George Lucas bridge that brought Jim Henson to Imagineering.

The "Muppet Babies" connection to Marvel and Star Wars.

The "Great Muppet Movie Ride" was planned but never built.

Why the 1990 TV Special "The Muppets at Walt Disney World" was a bittersweet turning point.

  12. This Mickey sold Cars: Disney's forgotten Advertising Lab

    Show notes

Mickey Mouse is the most recognizable character on Earth—but in the 1950s, he looked a little… different....and he sold cars! Thanks to Disney's secret ad lab department!

If you’ve ever seen the 1955 Nash Rambler commercials, you might have noticed a version of Mickey that feels more like a modern art experiment than a Disney icon. He was pointy, angular, and selling cars. But why?

In this episode of Synergy Loves Company, we’re exploring Walt Disney’s secret 1950s "Ad Lab." Long before Disneyland was a global phenomenon, Walt was using a hidden studio on the Disney lot—Hurrell Productions—to master the art of television synergy.

    We’re diving into:

The mystery of the "Pointy" Mickey Mouse and why he was redesigned for TV.

The secret "H-Wing" unit that produced ads for 7-Up, Ipana Toothpaste, and Nash Motors.

How Bucky Beaver and Fresh-Up Freddie paved the way for the Disney machine.

The "6 Degrees" connection between a 1950s toothpaste jingle and the movie Grease.

Walt Disney wasn't just a dreamer; he was a strategic architect who used television commercials as a laboratory to explore television, fund Disneyland, and build the synergy model we know today.

  13. Disney’s Wonderful World of Reading: The Subscription Trap We All Loved!

    Show notes

Did you have a shelf full of those iconic, colorful-spined Disney's Wonderful World of Reading books as a kid? They had that Red book, Blue globe, Mickey Ear Logo at the top! You probably remember the magic of receiving a new story in the mail, addressed specifically to you—but do you know how they actually got there?

Today, we uncover the hidden history of Disney’s Wonderful World of Reading. While these books are a staple of childhood nostalgia for millions, their origin story is tied to a massive door-to-door encyclopedia empire, high-pressure sales tactics, and a "negative option" billing system like Columbia House that Disney later adapted to their own Movie Club.

From the 1965 "prototype" set to the Federal Trade Commission’s battle against "subscription traps," we’re exploring how a 1970s mail-order club paved the way for the modern era of Disney Movie Club and even Disney+.

    In this episode, we explore:

-The Grolier Empire: How door-to-door salesmen conquered the bookshelf.

-The "Negative Option" Trap: Why the books kept coming even if you didn't ask for them.

-The Disney Vault: How these books became the only way to "own" the movies in the 80s.

-The Legacy: How a book club from 1971 predicted the future of streaming services.

  14. ViewMaster put you in 3D Disney Worlds

    Show notes

Why did a plastic toy from the 1930s look more immersive than the multi-million dollar Disney movies it was based on?

Before CGI and VR, Disney fans had a secret portal into the movies: the View-Master. But there’s a mystery at the heart of those tiny film reels. While the movies were flat, 2D animation cels, the View-Master reels featured lush, 3D worlds with incredible depth. Who sbuilt Neverland in 3D? Who sculpted a physical Baloo the Bear so you could see him from every angle?

In this episode, we explore the connection between a German piano tuner, the 1964 World’s Fair, and the legendary (but often uncredited) artists like Florence Thomas, Joe Liptak, and Martha Armstrong Hand. These sculptors didn't work for Disney, yet they were the ones who physically "built" the Disney universe in 3D, one clay model at a time.

    In this video, we’ll discover:

The connection between the Carousel of Progress and the birth of 3D armchair travel.

How a corporate "spy op" purchase of Tru-Vue handed Disney to View-Master.

The painstaking process of "3D-ifying" 2D animation using clay, dioramas, and single-lens cameras.

Why the GAF sponsorship era made the View-Master the ultimate Disney Park souvenir.

  15. The Secret History of Disney Sing-Along Songs

    Show notes

Disney Sing-Along Songs were the ultimate 90s childhood ritual—but they weren't exactly a Disney original. Did you grow up sitting on the living room carpet, waiting for the "bouncing ball" to start?

In today’s episode, we’re pulling the tape out of the vault to discover the secret history of the Disney Sing-Along Songs VHS series. From Disney’s copy-cat MTV music videos to a spark of inspiration from the director of Queen’s *Bohemian Rhapsody* to a low-budget promotional tool for *Song of the South*, we explore how Disney turned archival footage into a multi-million dollar feedback loop fueling a generation of Disney fans.

We’re tracing the history of Disney Sing-Along Songs from the 1920s cinema tropes of Max Fleischer to the modern-day *Frozen* Sing-Along at Hollywood Studios. Why do you still remember every word to these songs? It wasn't just magic—it was a perfectly executed home video synergy strategy.

    In this video, we cover:

    - The "DTV" experiment and the MTV influence on Disney.

    - How *Kidsongs* forced Disney to change their home video game.

    - The "Rewind and Repeat" ritual that defined a generation of Disney fans.

    - The secret role of Professor Owl and the "bouncing ball" technology.

    - How these "cheap" tapes became the blueprint for modern Disney Karaoke.

  16. How The Disney Store Triggered a Retail Revolution

    Show notes

From the "Mountain of Plush" to the "Opening Key" ceremony, discover how Michael Eisner and Steve Jobs used theme park secrets to trigger a retail revolution.

In the late 1980s, the Walt Disney Company was at a crossroads. They had the movies and the theme parks, but they hadn't yet mastered the "third place" between home and vacation. That all changed on March 28, 1987, at the Glendale Galleria.

In this episode of Synergy Loves Company, we explore:

    • The Glendale Gambit: Why Disney took a massive gamble on a suburban mall just 5 miles from Burbank.
    • Retail-tainment: How Disney used Imagineering principles like "The Weenie" and "Visual Abundance" to outperform every other retailer in America.
    • The Global Expansion: How the Disney Store conquered London and Japan by adapting the "American Mall Dream."
    • The Apple Connection: How Steve Jobs helped reboot the stores with his "Imagination Park" concept.
    • The Rise and Fall: Why 749 stores eventually dwindled to a handful of Target shop-in-shops.

  18. Walt Disney's Secret Florda Takeover

    Show notes

The greatest spy operation in business history wasn’t run by the CIA—it was run by Walt Disney....to Create Walt Disney World

In 1963, Walt Disney flew over a Florida swamp and saw more than just land; he saw the site for a "City of Tomorrow." But to build it, he had to pull off an impossible heist: buying 27,000 acres of land without anyone knowing it was him.

In this episode, we go behind the scenes of "Project Future" to reveal:

-The Shell Game: How Disney used fake companies like "M.T. Lott" to hide his tracks.

-The CIA Connection: The real-life fixer with ties to the Bay of Pigs who helped secure the land.

-The Sentinel Investigation: How a single reporter, Emily Bavar, caught Walt in a lie and blew the secret wide open.

-The Bonnet Creek Hole: The one piece of land Disney couldn't buy, and why it’s still a "hole in the map" today.

-This is the story of how Walt Disney built a Magic Kingdom with its own Government from a swamp using secrecy, deception, and a staggering amount of nerve.

  19. Walt Disney's Secret American Scavenger Hunt

    Show notes

Before Walt Disney bought a single acre of swampland in Florida, he spent years on a secret "scavenger hunt" across America. We often hear that Disney World was a "Plan B" after Disneyland, but the truth is much more calculated. From a luxury bowling alley in Denver to a 5-story indoor theme park in St. Louis and a controversial ski resort in the Sierras, Walt was secretly testing the pieces he needed for his "Florida Project."

In today’s episode of Synergy Loves Company, we’re connecting the dots between Walt’s biggest "failures" and the ultimate success of Walt Disney World. We explore:

    - How a Denver bowling alley became the training ground for Disney’s world-class service.

    - The real reason the St. Louis "Riverfront Square" project was cancelled (it wasn't just about the beer!).

    - Why a mountain ski resort in the Sierras taught Walt the most expensive lesson of his life.

    - How the 1964 New York World’s Fair acted as a multi-million dollar R\&D lab funded by corporate sponsors.

Every stop on this scavenger hunt provided a piece of the puzzle: Operations, Control, Land, Technology, and Market Proof. By the time Walt looked at Florida, he didn't just have a dream—he had a proven blueprint for perfection.
