  2. Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast, Episode 378: Janice Smella of SmellaQue on winning 'The Jack' & more

    Season 8, Episode 41

    Show notes

Janice Smella and family celebrated their Grand Championship at the 37th annual Jack Daniels World BBQ Championship by spending the following weekend in Ottumwa, Iowa, checking off another box on their KCBS reps in training schedule. It was a unique feeling, indeed, as the high of winning The Jack had hardly begun to fade. On Episode 378 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast we have a fun conversation with Janice about what winning one of the BBQ's "majors" - and being the first Canadian team to do so - means. The story of Smellaque is one of perseverance and love of cooking for Janice and husband Russell, who don't cook as often as many world-class teams but have enjoyed tremendous success - especially over the last two seasons. And now, just as she's won The Jack, Janice plans to cut back her competition and help bring more comps to her native Canada.

Meanwhile, co-hosts Lyndal Scranton and Steve Koehler review their latest weekend cooking adventures and preview what's coming up. For Steve, that means seafood on the grill and for Lyndal it's a busy competition stretch.

    Season 8, Episode 31

    Show notes

We dive into the world of steak cooking on Episode 368 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast with a couple of big winner at last weekend's Hornersville Watermelon Festival in southeast Missouri. First up is Dan Wright of Take it Easy BBQ from St. Louis. While he's won big in KCBS and the Rib Cookoff Association, Dan came up big in SCA entry by earning a rare triple golden ticket (steak, ribs and beans) into next spring's SCA Worlds in Pensacola, Fla.

John Lindsey is one of the top SCA cooks in the organization's history, with dozens of grand championships and his outstanding All-Qued Up product line of rubs and sauces. Admittedly burned out from years on the circuit, John hadn't cooked an SCA comp in more than three years, but clearly hasn't lost his touch by winning the combined (three steaks) score in Hornersville. We hope our listeners will add to the conversation in the comments section, though transparent and frequent communication along with bang-for-your-buck prize funds certainly seem to be at the top of everyone's lists.

    Season 8, Episode 23

    Show notes

Episode 360 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast takes us to northeast Arkansas for a visit with one of the USA's most-respected, across-the-board pit masters. John Lindsey spent time on the KCBS circuit as All Q'ued Up BBQ before becoming a champion on the Steak Cookout Association for several years. He's opened a catering business in recent years that has been a hit and now is venturing more into content creation on Facebook, Youtube and Instagram as John Lindsey Delta Pitmaster with his twist on southern cooking. It's great to catch up with John, who has some interesting thoughts on his days in competition cooking along with the SCA, where there seems to be a groundswell for bring-your-own ribeyes - something he was an advocate of years ago.

Recurring guest Richard Fergola also checks in with the latest happenings from his BBQ travels as Fergolicious BBQ and the Richard Fergola BBQ line of rubs and sauces. Fergie has a busy summer ahead and you never know where he might pop up, teaching a class or competing.

Co-hosts Lyndal and Steve discuss their latest cooking adventures and preview Father's Day weekend on the grill and in the sports world.
