Fatima Goss Graves, CEO of the National Women's Law Center on Why We Need Title XI and Dignity for All Students Bonus
Show notes
On this bonus episode of Tamarindo, we feature Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center and we discuss the history of Title IX of the Civil Right Act, how this administration has stripped it and other civil rights protections, and why it matters.
The Cornell sexual assault case has renewed our focus on how Universities can do better to protect students who experience assault, and to hold those responsible accountable. Many of us observed as women bravely shared their stories with the hashtag #IamJaneDoe and how they faced backlash and additional trauma. But something else we noticed about these viral stories is how survivors referenced their schools' Title XI offices. The framing almost made it seem as if Title XI of the Civil Rights Act was somehow responsible for or connected to how universities failed them.
We’ve invited Fatima Goss Graves, a nationally recognized leader in the fight for gender justice and an expert in law, policy, and culture change, to help us think through this. She is also the co-founder of the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund and is also President of the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund.

True Stories from our Friends at Risk! Bonus
Show notes
This bonus episode of Tamarindo is from our time guest-hosting for Risk, a storytelling podcast about stories people never dared to share.
Javier Morillo spent his twenties shutting down white men who reduced him to a fantasy. Then country music got its hooks in him, and a conference in Austin put a real cowboy in front of him.
Ximena Ospina is seven when her family leaves Colombia within a month. She starts first grade in Marina, California, able to count to ten and ask for orange juice, and little else. Then story time runs long and she really needs the bathroom. And thanks toLisa Cantrell &Capital Storytelling, who produced the Sacramento live show where Ximena first told this one!

Maria Teresa Kumar on Voto Latino & The Power of the Latino Vote
Episode 268
Show notes
We start today’s episode reflecting on how we are feeling after the murder of a father, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, by ICE. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was a hard-working family man who wanted nothing else in life but to provide for his wife and see his sons become great people, as his son Ronaldo Salgado shared in a heartbreaking video. We reflect on this moment and what it calls us to do.
Next, we welcome Maria Teresa Kumar, President and Co-Founder of Voto Latino, to discuss the critical importance of political engagement within the Latino community. She shares her personal "why" for co-founding Voto Latino, a civic organization dedicated to empowering young Latinos by registering them to vote and providing them with critical information to maximize their political power. The conversation centers on navigating current community trauma and voter suppression, urging the next generation to recognize their collective power.
We also mention that our friends at Donuts y Tortas are hosting an event in Anaheim on Friday, August 14 starting at 6 pm. The event is an intimate fireside chat with Atalie Oliva, founder of The Bitter Woman Network, along with the debut of a Donuts y Tortas original mini documentary diving into the story behind the network and the journey that inspired it, and more surprises yet to be revealed. Get the details and tickets here and at donasytortas on Instagram.
