  1. Zero Spooked: Is Star Wars Too Scary to Move Forward?

    Season 9

    Show notes

Kathleen Kennedy said Rian Johnson "got spooked by the online negativity." Rian answered in four words: "lol zero spooked, sorry." But that's where this conversation starts, not where it ends.

The Dad, Sam and Nate ask the bigger question: are directors and stars scared to take on Star Wars, and if they are, why? From The Last Jedi backlash to Taika Waititi's movie going on ice, we talk about what it costs to make Star Wars right now.

Then we look ahead to 2027 and beyond: the original cut of Star Wars, Ahsoka Season 2, Star Wars: Starfighter, and Star Wars Celebration. Is the future bold, or is everyone playing it safe?

If you enjoyed the conversation, subscribe and leave us a rating and review. It really helps other fans find the show.

  2. The Ninth Jedi Preview: Why It Feels More Like Star Wars Than Andor

    Season 9, Episode 13

    Show notes

The Ninth Jedi limited series is almost here, and in this episode we dig into everything leading up to it.

We revisit the original Star Wars Visions short, talk through the second episode that bridges into the series, and break down the trailer. Along the way we get into why this story feels more like pure Star Wars than a lot of recent projects, how lightsaber colors are being used in a meaningful way again, the blue lightsaber moment that raises big questions, and whether animation is currently carrying the franchise better than live action.

This is our full preview episode before the series drops.

  3. Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi: The 5 Biggest Criticisms Explained

    Season 9, Episode 12

    Show notes

This is the episode we can always point people to when the conversation turns to Luke in The Last Jedi.

We take the five most frequent criticisms of Luke Skywalker—green milk, his death, exile on Ahch-To, “the Jedi must end,” and the temple night with Ben—and treat them with the seriousness they deserve. No straw-manning, no “you just didn’t get it.” We try to understand why these moments felt like a betrayal after thirty-four years of waiting… and then we explain why, for us, the same moments still work.

It’s part empathy exercise, part defense of the character as written, and part invitation to watch the film one more time with a different set of eyes. Whether you love this Luke, hate him, or sit somewhere in the middle, this conversation is meant to be the reference point for the whole debate.

  4. The Last Jedi: The Force — Did Rian Johnson Break It or Restore It? | Tatooine Sons

    Season 9, Episode 11

    Show notes

In this episode of Tatooine Sons, David, Sam, and Nate tackle one of the most controversial topics in Star Wars: Rian Johnson’s vision of the Force in The Last Jedi.

Did he break the Force or restore it to its original spiritual roots from A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back? The family dives deep into the balance of the Force, the shift from destroying the dark side to a true yin yang symbiosis of light side and dark side, and whether there is truly no good and evil — only life, death, and rebirth.

They unpack Luke Skywalker’s radical claim that “it’s time for the Jedi to end”, the Rey and Kylo Force connection, and the polarizing broom boy ending that sparked accusations of democratizing the Force and making it too accessible.

Along the way they draw surprising parallels to Rogue One, Jedi: Survivor, Doctor Strange, and even Magic: The Gathering, while sharing personal stories about balance, death, and what the Force really means.

Is the Force meant for Rey nobodies and broom boys, or should it stay elite and mystical? This is the honest, in-depth Star Wars debate the fandom needs.

Listen and decide for yourself whether Rian Johnson broke it… or fixed it.

  5. The Last Jedi: Addressing the Criticisms That Still Divide Star Wars Fans

    Season 9, Episode 10

    Show notes

The Last Jedi remains the most polarizing Star Wars movie ever made. Love it or hate it, Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII triggered one of the biggest fan backlashes in franchise history — and the arguments haven’t slowed down nearly a decade later.

In this episode we directly address the criticisms that refuse to die:
    • Luke Skywalker’s shocking portrayal as a broken hermit who failed his students
    • The decision to make Rey’s parents “nobodies” instead of tying her to existing legacy characters
    • The casino planet subplot on Canto Bight and whether it was a waste of runtime
    • Vice Admiral Holdo’s command style and the infamous hyperspace ram
    • Killing Supreme Leader Snoke far too early in the trilogy
    • Finn and Rose’s arc and the larger themes of failure, hope, and subversion

We examine which criticisms hold weight, which ones miss the point, and how The Last Jedi fits (or clashes) with George Lucas’s original six-film saga and the themes Dave Filoni and others have carried forward. This isn’t about declaring a winner in the fandom war — it’s about understanding why the movie hit so many people so hard and whether it was bold storytelling or a miscalculation.

Whether you walked out of the theater in 2017 loving it, hating it, or feeling confused, this conversation is for you.

Which criticism of The Last Jedi do you think is the weakest? Which one still bothers you the most? Let us know in the comments or on X @TatooineSons — we actually read and engage with them.

  6. The Last Jedi: Episode VIII Theories & The Dangers of Headcanon

    Season 9

    Show notes

    We’re going back.

Way back to the two-year stretch between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi — the most intense, creative, and at times toxic period of Star Wars fandom most of us have ever lived through. In this episode the Tatooine Suns crew relives the glory days of hot-tub trailer breakdowns, Celebration overflow rooms, Mike Zero “sources,” and the Rey parentage wars that consumed the internet.

We walk through every major theory that ruled YouTube, Twitter, and Reddit: Rey Skywalker, Rey Kenobi, Rey Solo, Rey Palpatine, Rey as a Nobody, Snoke as Darth Plagueis, Mace Windu, Gallius Rax, Luke turning evil, the Rey/Kylo flip, the Knights of Ren, and what “The Last Jedi” title was really supposed to mean.

But we don’t just laugh at the old theories — we get honest about what two years of heavy headcanon did to us. How it set expectations so high that when Rian Johnson subverted almost all of them, the fandom fractured. We talk about the real emotional impact that had on longtime fans and share how we’ve learned to enjoy the hype without letting it ruin the movie.

It’s part nostalgia trip, part cautionary tale, and 100% Tatooine Suns — warm, reflective, and willing to call the fandom on its nonsense while still loving every ridiculous minute of it.

Perfect for anyone who lived through 2015–2017 or wants to understand why that era still feels so charged today. What theory were you convinced was going to happen?

Tell us in the comments or tag us @TatooineSons.

Listen, laugh, and remember: headcanon is fun… until it isn’t.

New episodes weekly. May the Force be with you. Always.

  7. The Last Jedi: The Documentary that Never Should Have Happened

    Season 9, Episode 8

    Show notes

The most transparent behind-the-scenes documentary in Star Wars history is buried in the Disney+ extras tab — and almost nobody knows it's there.

The Tatooine Sons dig deep into The Director and the Jedi, the remarkably raw documentary chronicling the making of The Last Jedi, and make the case that it's essential viewing for anyone who has an opinion on this film — especially if that opinion is negative.

This is a documentary where the guy who played Luke Skywalker tells the director, on camera, that he fundamentally disagrees with the entire characterization of his character. Where you watch Rian Johnson arrive on set every single day with the pure joy of a Star Wars fan who can't believe he gets to be there. Where a practical Yoda puppet — built from the original mold, operated by Frank Oz — becomes the moment Mark Hamill's entire resistance quietly breaks.

And it's a documentary that Disney would never make today. The absence of anything remotely similar for The Rise of Skywalker says everything about what the backlash to The Last Jedi actually cost the franchise.

    In this episode:

    • Why The Director and the Jedi is impossible to find (and where it's actually hiding on Disney+)
    • What radical transparency looks like when a studio actually means it — and what it cost them afterward
    • Mark Hamill's real arc through production: from open skeptic to true believer, and the exact moment it turned
    • The Yoda puppet, the Snoke throne room, 140 practical sets, and a director who fought for every single one
    • Rian Johnson's joy and the tragedy of the fandom pushing him into silence
    • The Sequel Trilogy's unfinished business — and the animated series that could change everything
    • Why The Rise of Skywalker has no documentary, no commentary, no extras — and what that tells you
    • Our honest recommendation: watch this before you rewatch the movie

If you've never seen The Director and the Jedi, this episode will make you drop everything and find it. If you have, you know exactly why we had to talk about it.

  8. Nobody. Nothing. Nowhere. The Last Jedi's Brutal Answers

    Season 9, Episode 7

    Show notes

The tide is turning on The Last Jedi — and Tatooine Sons have been saying it all along. In this episode, we unpack the film's most misunderstood element: that Rian Johnson wrote it to spite the fans. We break down the actual production timeline to put that myth to rest, then go deep on the real creative engine behind the film — the question Johnson asked himself for every single character: What is the greatest challenge they've ever faced?

From Poe learning the difference between heroes and leaders, to Finn finally being forced to pick a side, to Rey confronting the answer she never wanted, to Luke Skywalker reckoning with his own hubris — this is The Last Jedi as Rian Johnson intended it. We also dig into Snoke's overconfidence, Kylo Ren's identity crisis, and whether the film is really a 180-degree reversal of The Force Awakens — or something far more intentional.

Nobody. Nothing. Nowhere. The answers were brutal. And they were exactly right.

  15. What Star Wars Can Teach Us About Faith - Adam Lance Garcia

    Season 8, Episode 11

    Show notes

Order 66 is old news. Coruscant's draped in shadow. And in Adam Lance Garcia's Star Wars Insider tale, "The Failing of the Light," a true believer faces a choice that'll leave you questioning everything. This week, we're diving deep with Adam (the mastermind behind Dex's poignant moment in From A Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi) to unpack one of the darkest Star Wars short stories we've ever encountered.

Forget Jedi versus Sith. Adam flips the script, plunging us into the heart of the Path of the Open Hand and showing how faith, fear, and trauma can pave the road to radicalization. Why should Star Wars dads care? Because this story is a goldmine for discussing empathy, moral ambiguity, and the civilian cost of war with your kids.

We're talking High Republic echoes, a Legends deep cut involving Synox poison, and conversation starters guaranteed to spark epic kitchen-table debates. What would you do if someone you trusted claimed the Jedi were the bad guys? How do you spot the line between conviction and extremism?

  16. Star Wars: Nostalgia Trap or Launchpad (Special Guest Heavy Spoilers)

    Season 8, Episode 11

    Show notes

Is Star Wars stuck in a nostalgia trap, or can it still launch into hyperspace? This week we're joined by Paul from Heavy Spoilers to dissect the Force... and the flaws. We're asking the tough questions: Are cameos saving Star Wars, or are they sinking it faster than Luke's X-Wing on Dagobah?

We look at when fan service works (Han Solo as a mentor? Yes!) and when it face-plants harder than Jar Jar Binks (we're looking at you, rushed celebrity cameos). Paul and I explore why Andor is the rebel alliance against nostalgia bait, offering smart, grown-up storytelling that respects its audience. Plus, we pinpoint the exact moment The Mandalorian jumped the shark (hint: it involves more cameos than a Comic-Con after-party).

But it's not all doom and gloom! We discuss the bold moves Star Wars needs to make to escape the nostalgia death spiral and how we, as Star Wars dads, can champion new eras and heroes for our kids. Paul even shares a heartwarming memory of late-night Shadows of the Empire sessions with his own father – a reminder that the moments we create around these stories are what truly matter.

Tune in for a discussion about curating our Star Wars experiences, embracing anticipation, and handing the future of the galaxy far, far away to the next generation. 17. From AT-AT Nightmares to Father-Son Fandom

    Season 8, Episode 10

    Show notes

Okay, so you're a Star Wars-loving dad, or maybe just a Star Wars fan in general, right? Then you've GOT to hear check out this week's episode! We're chatting with Todd and Trent Hoffman, a father-son duo who are seriously next-level when it comes to their Star Wars obsession.

Seriously, it's like passing down the Force itself! They dive into their Star Wars origin stories, and trust me, it's hilarious. Todd's got this slightly traumatizing memory of AT-ATs from way back in 1980 (don't worry, it made him who he is today!), and Trent's first word? "Boba." Apparently, Dad was giving him character lessons right there on the changing table! Talk about dedication.

But it gets even better. Todd's fandom got a serious boost from the Expanded Universe novels (now Star Wars Legends), and he even joined the 501st Legion! Trent, on the other hand, is the modern Star Wars guru, keeping his dad straight on blaster models and Rancor puppet trivia. It's a generational thing, you know?

What's really cool is how Star Wars has become their own special family language. They're quoting Sith showdowns, drawing parallels between Anakin's story and, get this, biblical themes! It's way deeper than just liking spaceships and lightsabers.

And they've even started their own podcast, inspired by Tatooine Sons! They talk about meeting other fans, debating whether "Skeleton Crew" is basically "Goonies in space" (it IS, right?), and geeking out over "Andor."

Honestly, Todd and Trent are proof that a shared love of Star Wars can be a seriously powerful way to connect. This episode is heartwarming, hilarious, and a total blast (with a blaster, of course!). You absolutely have to tune in! You'll laugh, you'll nod in agreement, and you might even feel inspired to share your own Star Wars story with the next generation.

  18. Reimagining Episode IX: Was the Death of Carrie Fisher a Missed Opportunity to Reboot Star Wars?

    Season 8, Episode 9

Did the Force ghost of opportunity pass right through Disney's hands? In this week's episode, we're diving deep into the galaxy far, far away to dissect a massive "what if" surrounding the sequel trilogy. Specifically, we're asking: could Carrie Fisher's untimely passing and the divisive reception of The Last Jedi have been the catalyst for a bold, new era of Star Wars?

Inspired by Paul at Heavy Spoilers, we're tackling the pitfalls of nostalgia and how they might have steered the saga off course. We explore how Leia's intended role in Episode IX was impacted, the Colin Trevorrow exit, and the ripple effects that led to The Rise of Skywalker's… let's just say, conservative approach.

Imagine an Episode IX that begins with Leia's death, a Kylo Ren shattered by grief, and a Resistance led by Rey, Poe, Finn, and Rose, standing on their own two feet. Could this have been the clean break Star Wars desperately needed? A chance to forge a truly new path, unshackled from the past?

Join us as we dissect this missed opportunity and debate whether a bold reboot could have saved the sequel trilogy.
