Tehillim Unveiled

Judaism, Religion & Spirituality

We say Tehillim (Psalms) all the time—as part of daily prayer, in moments of joy, or when we need comfort. But have you ever wondered what makes these words so special? You're not alone. And his podcast is here to help.

"Tehillim Unveiled" takes the most familiar chapters and peels them back layer by layer to reveal the beauty, emotions, and timeless messages that have made these ancient poems resonate across generations.

  3. Rosh Hashanah: Why Did God Bother Creating Me? (Tehillim 8)

    Show notes

Every Rosh Hashanah, we're told the same thing: it's a day of reflection, introspection, self-evaluation. But open the siddur, and none of that is actually there. The liturgy centers on one theme: coronating God as King over the world He created. So why does this day stir up so much inner turmoil?

In this episode, we trace that question back three thousand years, to King David, sitting under the same stars, asking the same thing: why would an infinite, all-powerful God bother creating me, let alone crown me? David never answers directly. But the rabbis of the midrash noticed something buried in his words in Tehillim 8, an answer, I think, that we all need to hear this Rosh Hashanah.

  4. Why Are We Still Mourning? — "Al Naharot Bavel" w/ R' Yitzchak Etshalom

    Show notes

In this Tisha B'Av special, Ari sits down with Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom for a deep dive into Psalm 137 ("Al Naharot Bavel") and what it teaches us about how to commemorate Tisha B'Av today.

  5. R׳ Menachem Leibtag and the Story We Were Chosen to Tell (Tehillim 105)

    Show notes

In this episode, Ari sits down with Rabbi Menachem Leibtag to explore one of the most overlooked chapters in Tehillim. At first glance, Tehillim 105 seems like a simple retelling of Jewish history. But Rabbi Leibtag argues that beneath the surface lies a profound interpretation of the Torah itself.

Together, they uncover how the psalm is built around Brit Bein HaBetarim, the covenant God made with Abraham, and how it presents the Exodus not merely as an escape from slavery, but as part of a larger mission stretching from Abraham to the Land of Israel. Along the way, they explore why this chapter became part of our daily prayers, how Tehillim serves as a commentary on Chumash, and what it means to be a people chosen to proclaim God's name in the world.

    Show notes

"When God returned the captives of Zion we were like dreamers."

It truly feels like a dream. Nearly a year ago, I recorded an episode with my teacher, Rabbi David Fohrman, reflecting on this very chapter. At the time, none of us knew when this day would come. Now that it’s here, his insights feel even more resonant.

I’m re-releasing that conversation today because it’s been deeply meaningful for me in processing the magnitude of this moment, and I hope it will be for you as well.

  18. “L’David” Part 1: The Case of David’s Missing Confidence

    Show notes

We’re kicking off Elul by returning to one of our favorite projects—the very first series we ever released on this podcast. This is a recrafted version of Tehillim 27, Part 1—tighter, more accessible, and ready for listening on the go, while still keeping all the depth and heart of the original.

In this episode, we begin exploring the surprising tensions within the psalm: one moment David is standing tall, confident in victory over his enemies; the next, he’s pleading with God for mercy. What’s going on?

If you’re looking for the full textual deep dive, complete with charts, I recommend the essay version linked here.

Tehillim 100, Mizmor L’Todah, the “Song of Thanksgiving,” is such a feel-good psalm. It’s got that great line, עִבְדוּ אֶת־ה׳ בְּשִׂמְחָה, “serve God with happiness.” But have you ever wondered: can happiness really be commanded? And what does it mean to connect avodah—service—to joy?

In this episode, we dive into a fresh way of reading the mizmor and explore how joy itself might be the offering God most desires.
