🎾 Episode 4: How to Play Smart Without Overthinking It

Pro players can now get coaching during matches, but it isn't helping everyone. Why can information that is 100% correct actually hurt your performance? And what does that mean for you?

Episode 4 explores how to use your intelligence without getting too much in your own head during a match. Play smart. Then get out of the way.

Coaching during matches is now part of pro tennis. So why isn't it helping every player?

Episode 4 starts with a strange truth: information that's 100% correct can still hurt your performance. Our best tennis runs on automatic motor systems β€” skills we've grooved through thousands of reps. When coaching, or our own inner voice, pulls the conscious mind into the middle of those systems, it can get in the way. That's what overthinking actually is.

    In this episode, we cover:

β€’ What overthinking is: the conscious mind interfering with the automatic systems that produce your best strokes.

β€’ Why Brad's comments were hurting Lexi's college performance: and how they iterated until they found a better way.

β€’ How to play smart without overthinking: Less is often more. The conscious mind has two jobs: help you self-regulate and choose a smart tactic. Then it steps aside and lets your body take over.

β€’ It takes a story to beat a story: what to do when your attention lands on crazy thoughts.

This isn't just a tennis podcast. It's a conversation about what competitive sports and mental performance can teach anyone trying to perform better.

Whether you're on the court, in the boardroom, or at home, Focus on Focus helps you think more clearly, direct your attention to relevant information, and stay present.

  2. #3: Getting Ready To Play (Episode 3: Focus On Focus)

    Season 1, Episode 3

    Show notes

🎾 Episode 3: Pre-Performance and Focus: Why did Lexi β€œpoop the court” at her last practice? And what does that have to do with focus?

Your focus doesn't suddenly switch on when the first point starts. What you do beforehand, ranging from 72 hours out to the moment you step on court, strongly shapes your attention during competition and practice. Here is how to use the pre-performance to get yourself ready to play.

πŸ‘‡ What’s your go-to routine before you compete?

Episode 3 is about what happens before you compete. Focus doesn't begin when the warmup, or even the first point, starts. It begins before you step on the court. The way you prepare can help you enter competition ready to respond rather than react.

    Three ideas drive the episode:

People aren't instantly adaptable. Anyone who has ever told a young kid, β€œWe're getting dressed in five minutes,” knows this. Our minds and bodies need time to shift gears.

Surprises set off alarms. When something catches us off guard, we're more likely to react automatically. Anticipating challenges gives us a better chance to respond intentionally.

We can prime our intentions. Deciding ahead of time what success looks like helps direct our attention toward what matters when competition begins.

We also detail three specific pre-performance strategies that you can use.

    1. 24–72 hours out: Set three match goals. Make them process goals: intentions that are relevant to your performance and within your control.

    2. 24–72 hours out: Scan for adversity. What could go wrong? Think through a few potential challenges before they happen. When you've seen a problem coming, it's less likely to surprise you, and you can prepare your responses.

    3. Right before you compete: Build in transition time. Don't go directly from whatever you were doing into competition mode. Give yourself time to breathe, review your goals, and get your mind and body ready to perform.

This isn't just a tennis conversation. The same principles apply whenever you have to perform under pressure β€” on the court, in the boardroom, in the classroom, or at home. Focus on Focus is about learning to notice what deserves your attention, prepare for what might disrupt it, and stay present when it matters. #tennis #training #mentality

  3. #2: The Competition Paradox Explained (Episode 2: Focus On Focus)

    Season 1, Episode 2

    Show notes

🎾 Episode 2: The Competition Paradox β€” did Zverev really forget the score at the US Open? What that tells us about where focus actually needs to go.

    THE OVERVIEW:
Did Zverev really forget the score at the US Open? And if he did β€” is that actually a problem?

Episode 2 tackles what we're calling the Competition Paradox: the gap between what focus looks like from the outside and what it actually is on the inside. A player who seems locked in for three hours β€” in tennis, in a marathon, in any long performance β€” isn't holding one continuous thought the entire time. Real focus is the next task, right in front of you, released and replaced point after point.

    IN THIS EPISODE WE COVER:

β€’ Where your attention should actually go during performance β€” the next task, in the present

β€’ Why "strong focus for three hours" doesn't mean three hours of attention on the same thing

β€’ The Inside-Out between-point routine: how to use the time between points to reset

β€’ What the Zverev moment actually reveals about high-level competitive focus

This isn't just a tennis podcast. It's a conversation about what competitive sports and mental performance can teach anyone trying to perform better. Whether you're on the court, in the boardroom, or at home, Focus on Focus helps you think clearer, bring your attention to relevant information, and stay present.

How can you improve your focus - in tennis and in life?

Everyone knows focus matters. But what does good focus actually look like? And how do you train it?

We've experienced tennis triumphs, heartbreaks, frustration, and growth. We've lived the game from a lot of different vantage points: player, daughter, dad, scholarship athlete, mental skills coach, and lifelong fan. Now we're bringing those experiences into a series of father-daughter conversations about mental performance.

Episode 1 digs into focus: what it actually is, what happens when it's absent or undertrained, and how we can get better at it. Over the course of the Focus on Focus Podcast series, we'll cover:

β€’ Where your attention should actually go during performance
β€’ How to "play smart without overthinking"
β€’ Why staying "locked in" for an entire match might be the wrong goal
β€’ How breathing and simple routines can help you regain focus when your mind wanders β€” and extend your ability to sustain it
β€’ What information is useful during a point, and what's just noise
β€’ How parents can help β€” or unintentionally hurt β€” a player's focus
β€’ What we've learned coaching distracted juniors, competing ourselves, and staying focused in careers outside tennis
β€’ Where father-daughter perspectives on mental toughness agree, and where they don't
