Sam Coturri - We Can Share The Wine
Season 1, Episode 10
Show notes
Sam Coturri is, I have to admit, probably the first 11th degree black belt Deadhead I've ever met, including all thoe weird professional wooks from various tours over the years. More than a musical acolyte or hazy California countercultural stereotype, Sam and his family have found their footing in the world through the Dead, their music, and the community surrounding it. Their day to day lives are viewed through rose tinted lenses, dilated pupils processing local yet gloably impactful existences as multigenerational organic farmers and winemakers.
Sam's dad, Phil Coturri, is an international icon of regenerative organic vitivultural, the result of a life lived and loved amidst Northern California's fertile ground. For his part, Sam grew up in what I've learned is not an altogether unusual NorCal existence, hanging out back stage at Dead concerts and spending summers with Wavy Gravy at camp Winnarainbow.
Sure, Sam eventually left the familiarity of Sonoma for college and a career. But he soon found himself back home, right where it turned out he was supposed to be, guiding his winery, Sixteen 600, to continuing levels of modest success.
You may have had some of their wine at this past summer's Terrapin Roadhsows, bottles and cans bedecked with art from family friend Stanley Mouse. Today Sam and his brother Max are navigating his father's ultimate retirement, shouldering the responsibility of not just mission-based family businesses but understanding that it's their own unique perspective that creates the springboard for onghoing success.
Sam and I discuss growing up in the inner circle of a faction of the Dead, how his Deadhead views have created a thriving business, winemaking secrets, and more.
Listen now and then find sam on social media via @grapeswithaview, @winemakerspod, and, of course, @sixteen600

Chris Benchetler - Mountains of the Moon
Episode 4
Show notes
Snowboarding, surfing, mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing, these are individualized pursuits, practiced in nature or natural settings. Humanity adapting and playing with whatever lays ahead, in it for the experience over some sense of personal glory. At their core these are improvisational activities, art forms all their own, and as such intersect seamlessly with music.
Professional freeskier, artist, and filmmaker Chris Benchetler knows this. He lives this, and in doing so his art flows smoothly from one medium to the next. In his latest film, Mountains of the Moon, he has assembled a small army of lighting experts, laser operators, engineers, fellow artists, plus a murderer's row of style-forward adventure athletes from across a wide swath of mediums to explore the brilliantly psychedelic ley lines at the harmonic convergence of action, adventure, nature, and imagination. The result is a mind-bending visual experience unlike any other, all cut together and performed in homage to the free spirited sonic extemprozation of the Grateful Dead, who's music makes up the soundtrack.
Chris and James discuss making a film this ambitious in this day and age, how he discovered the Dead and the role they play in his life, painting with Mickey Hart, what it takes to light up mountains, the pursuit of perfdection, being open to opportunity, and more.
