  1. The Truth About 5 Micron Oil Filters (Nominal vs Absolute)

    Season 1, Episode 35

    Show notes

There's a lot of confusion surrounding oil filter efficiency, micron ratings, and the difference between nominal and absolute filtration. In this episode of the 3.0 Duramax Podcast, we're breaking it all down! WWW.DEMONWORKSHOP.COMPPE recently released its NEW 5-micron nominal engine oil filter for the 3.0L Duramax diesel, and it's already generating plenty of questions. How does it compare to the existing PPE 10-micron oil filter? What does 5-micron nominal actually mean? And could tighter filtration affect oil flow, especially when running thicker engine oil?As a GM dealership technician, I'm sharing what I've learned about oil filter efficiency, comparing published filtration ratings, and discussing what Duramax owners should consider before choosing their next oil filter.TOPICS COVERED IN THIS EPISODE:NEW PPE 5-Micron Oil Filter – A closer look at the new PPE 1140660 engine oil filter for the 3.0L Duramax.5 Micron vs. 10 Micron Filtration – Understanding the differences between PPE's new 5-micron filter and the existing 1140650 10-micron filter.Nominal vs. Absolute Filtration – What 50%, 98%, and 99% filtration efficiency ratings actually mean and why micron ratings don't tell the whole story.Oil Filter Comparisons – Discussing published filtration specifications from PPE, ACDelco, WIX, Purolator, and Premium Guard.Oil Pressure & Thicker Engine Oil – Could tighter filtration affect oil flow? We'll discuss the concerns and upcoming testing plans.NEW Edge CTS4 Monitor – What's changed from the CTS3, the larger screen, internal upgrades, and one feature I wish Edge had included.2027 GM 3.0L Duramax Updates – New information on the updated LZ0 engine, larger DEF tank, available 34-gallon fuel tank, transmission cooling changes, and more.SEMA Show Questions – We're heading to SEMA! 4. Want Better MPG From Your 3.0 Duramax? Stop Buying This Stuff

    Season 1, Episode 28

    Show notes

Will an aftermarket part actually increase the fuel economy of your 3.0 Duramax? How can you get better MPG without wasting money on modifications that may never pay for themselves? In Episode 32, I break down what I’ve learned from testing different parts and modifications on the 3.0L Duramax diesel. We’ll talk about air intakes, air filters, fuel additives, the Edge EZX, PPE charge air cooler, tires, wheels, driving habits, maintenance, and what I believe actually makes a difference when you're trying to improve fuel economy. The 3.0 Duramax is already an incredibly efficient diesel engine, but with diesel prices climbing, every MPG counts. The important question is whether spending hundreds of dollars on a modification actually saves enough fuel to justify the cost.I also cover a few updates before getting into our main MPG discussion, including the LM2 vs. LZ0 pistons, what I found after cutting open my 10L80 transmission filter, oil supply concerns, fuel filters, and some new products.Filters: https://www.demonworkshop.com/collections/oil-and-filtersKlickWrench Socket: https://link.amazon/B0f5hIl4yAs an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.⏱️ CHAPTERS00:00 – Can You Get Better MPG From a 3.0 Duramax?01:00 – Channel & Shop Updates03:25 – Fuel Filters & Cold Weather Maintenance04:35 – Metal Found in My 10L80 Transmission Filter05:15 – Oil Supply & Rising Maintenance Costs06:20 – LM2 vs. LZ0 Duramax Pistons08:15 – How to Get Better 3.0 Duramax Fuel Economy09:30 – Do Air Intakes & Filters Improve MPG?11:20 – Edge EZX & Fuel Economy12:05 – PPE Charge Air Cooler: Does It Improve MPG?12:55 – Do Diesel Fuel Additives Improve MPG?14:20 – Tires, Wheels & Lift Kits Can Hurt MPG16:15 – Driving Habits That Improve Fuel Economy17:20 – Maintenance & Fluids Matter18:05 – Should You Buy Mods Just for Better MPG?19:10 – Final ThoughtsWhat kind of fuel economy are you getting from your 3.0 Duramax? 6. GM Just Revealed Major 2027 3.0 Duramax Updates

    Season 1, Episode 30

    Show notes

GM has revealed several updates coming to the 2027 3.0 Duramax, including changes to the pistons, turbo vanes, next-generation NOx sensor, sealing, fuel injector corrosion protection, DEF system, and more. We’re breaking down what we know, what these changes could mean for reliability, and whether the 2027 SUVs will eventually receive the same updated LZ0.We also have details on the larger 34-gallon fuel tank, which could give the 3.0 Duramax more than 900 miles of highway driving range. The DEF tank is getting bigger too, along with revised DEF level indicators. But that’s not all we’re covering in this episode. We get into the controversy over GM removing the traditional engine oil dipstick from its new V8s — and why I actually think getting rid of the dipstick could be a GOOD thing. We also talk about the upcoming MegaMax diesel, compare different transmission filters available for these trucks, run the numbers on diesel vs. gas fuel costs, and answer a viewer question about whether he should keep repairing his 2024 LZ0 or switch to an LM2.As a GM technician and 3.0 Duramax enthusiast, my goal is to cut through the noise and give you useful information based on what we actually know — and when something isn't confirmed yet, I'll tell you that too.🔥 Save with Banks Power using discount code DemonWorks:https://www.bankspower.com/demonworks🔧 Duramax Parts & Productshttps://www.demonworkshop.com📰 Duramax News, Maintenance Info & Part Numbershttps://www.duramaxnews.com🚨 COMING SOONhttps://www.3maxdiesel.comhttps://www.megamaxdiesel.comTopics covered in this episode:• 2027 3.0 Duramax LZ0 updates• Is this the Gen 2 LZ0?• LZ0 piston changes• Turbo vane updates• Next-generation NOx sensors• Fuel injector corrosion protection• 34-gallon 2027 Silverado fuel tank• Larger DEF tank and new DEF indicators• 2027 Silverado 1500 ZR2• GM removing the engine oil dipstick• MegaMax diesel news• Duramax transmission filters• Diesel vs. gasoline fuel costs• LM2 vs. LZ0 reliability• Used 3.0 Duramax problemsIf you own a 3.0 Duramax, are considering buying one, or want to stay up to date on the latest Duramax news, subscribe and follow along. 7. Your 3.0 Duramax MAP Sensor Could Be Causing Problems

    Season 1, Episode 29

    Show notes

In this episode, we take a closer look at the 3.0 Duramax MAP sensor, including what it does, why it gets dirty, where it’s located, and whether you should clean it or replace it.The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor is an important part of the 3.0L Duramax diesel engine management system. Because of its location near the EGR flow into the intake manifold, the sensor can develop significant buildup over time. We discuss why accurate MAP sensor readings matter, how a dirty or skewed sensor could affect engine operation, and why I now recommend replacing the sensor rather than cleaning it.We also talk about LM2 vs. LZ0 MAP sensors, changing regen intervals and some of the other basic items worth checking when your Duramax starts regenerating more frequently, including the air filter and mass airflow sensor. Also in Episode 29:• An update on genuine PPE engine oil filters and their new packaging/design• Why I recommend replacing the aluminum transmission filter bolts during service• Winners of the Blowzer X6 cordless air duster giveaway• My recent tour of Banks Power and an update on 3.0 Duramax development• A quick update on my 2027 Silverado 1500 ZR2 with the 3.0 DuramaxFor more 3.0 Duramax diesel news, technical information, and updates:[www.duramaxnews.com](http://www.duramaxnews.com)Shop 3.0 Duramax parts and products:[www.demonworkshop.com](http://www.demonworkshop.com)Topics covered: 3.0 Duramax MAP sensor, LM2 Duramax, LZ0 Duramax, MAP sensor replacement, dirty MAP sensor, Duramax regen frequency, Duramax maintenance, PPE oil filters, 3.0 Duramax problems, and Duramax diesel maintenance.00:00 Intro – 3.0 Duramax MAP Sensor & Episode 2901:25 Blowzer Giveaway Winners04:10 PPE Oil Filter Update & Fake Filters06:35 3.0 Duramax Transmission Filter Bolts07:45 3.0 Duramax MAP Sensor Problems09:10 Why the MAP Sensor Gets Dirty10:20 Clean or Replace the MAP Sensor?12:05 LM2 vs LZ0 MAP Sensors13:05 MAP Sensor Codes & Why Readings Matter14:45 Banks Power Tour & 3.0 Duramax Update17:20 What's Coming Next
