  1. Uecking it up

    Season 1, Episode 4

    Show notes

John Rabe and Charles Haas talk St. Louis Cardinals baseball the way it deserves: long, unplanned digressions, zero patience for magical manager theories, catching logjams, third-base experiments that refuse to die, and media that somehow knows everything but reports nothing. Managers aren’t wizards, rosters win games, and Bob Uecker already had a ring. We roast the dumb ideas so you don’t have to. Mostly for the ten of you still listening. Welcome to episode 4 of the Cardinal Sin.

  2. The Dodger's Didn't Kill Themselves

    Show notes

This week Charles and John discover that the Brewers and Rays reaching the World Series is apparently the greatest sports conspiracy since the Black Sox… according to a guy who once tried to sell unlicensed t-shirts out of an X account. They gently (and not-so-gently) dismantle the theory, then pivot to the real crisis: What do you actually do with Mason Wynn and that cannon for an arm when the bat refuses to cooperate? Join this week’s episode of the Cardinal Sin, featuring Brewers “golden” tickets that turned out to be fool’s gold, AI that still can’t code, and two middle-aged men pretending they’re not middle-aged. Critical thinking, crass humor, maximum eye-rolling, and the occasional admission that we’ve been rambling for hours.

    --------------

    (00:00) – Two Middle-Aged Guys Walk Into a Podcast
Charles and John open by reading the one nice review that called them middle-aged, which somehow becomes both a compliment and an existential crisis. Self-introductions, baseball idioms, and early signs this will not be a tight 45-minute show. (05:39) – The Greatest Conspiracy Since… Ever?
They dive into a post claiming the Brewers and Rays reaching the World Series is a massive players-union plot to influence CBA talks. Spoiler: the tin-foil hat comes off quickly. (15:33) – Crackpots, Attention Seekers, and T-Shirt Vendors
A masterclass in why people who claim to know every secret about every conspiracy are usually selling something (literally, in this case). Tragic human condition intermission included. (25:13) – How to Convince Shohei to Tank
They walk through the pure logistical nightmare of getting Ohtani, Freeman, and an entire Dodgers roster to throw the NLCS for zero personal benefit. Black Sox anniversary timing makes it even funnier. (38:15) – Owners Already Don’t Care What You Think
The real reason the conspiracy theory collapses: public perception doesn’t move the needle when the owners are prepared to lock the sport down for years. (42:55) – Golden Podcast Tickets *Radio Theater*
A completely unhinged bit where Charles “honors” a fictional $100 golden ticket buyer by keeping the money, offering a window to shout through, and promising future appearances… maybe. (48:30) – When “Timeless” Means “Never”
The hosts roast the Brewers for selling $1,000 anytime tickets years ago and then refusing to honor them for the actual World Series. Small-market charm meets big-market greed.

(01:11:38) – Mason Wynn: Elite Arm, Ordinary Bat
John opens the big Cardinals debate: great defender, fun to watch, not someone you build around or pay premium money past age 28. Ozzie Smith comparisons are firmly shut down. (01:24:26) – The Defense-Value Counterpunch
Charles pushes back hard: modern pitching workloads make elite infield defense more valuable than the stats show, and three controllable years of Mason Wynn is still a feature, not a bug. (02:06:13) – Closing Credits & Community Notes
They wrap with thoughts on local broadcasters, bad Spotify reviews, the joy of blocking people, and a reminder that they’re not trying to become stars—just two middle-aged guys talking Cardinals until everyone (including them) gets tired.

  3. Analytics

    Season 1, Episode 2

    Show notes

Welcome back to the Cardinal Sin podcast, a sequel absolutely no one asked for, yet much like Hollywood’s worst impulses, we are cramming it down your throats anyway. After defying all statistical odds to secure a whopping three listeners last week, Charles Haas and John Rabe return to see just how much lower the bar can go. Humor. Pain. Analytics. Bloom & the St. Louis Cardinals. It's all in this weeks episode of the Cardinal Sin.

    --------------------00:00 – Intro

(03:48) – NLCS: Brewers up 3-0 on the Dodgers and what it means for small markets and labor talks.

(05:11) – Payroll myths, salary-cap arguments, and the awkward success of low-spending teams.

(11:50) – Why no team is unbeatable in October and the outsized role of luck in short series.

(24:03) – Brewers/Rays success is advanced analytics, not “old-school” baseball.

(34:26) – Clarifying analytics basics people still get wrong and the invention of the “Keith Law effect”—yelling at people until they agree with you.

(55:08) – Modern pitching usage, 30 Cardinals arms, and how Dizzy Dean & Bob Gibson actually worked.

(1:21:46) Hopeful but cautious take on Bloom’s Tampa Bay background, the need for multiple voices, and the massive task of not just catching up after years of falling behind under Mozeliak.

(1:31:49) – Rejection of simplistic payroll comparisons. Cardinals’ low spend this year reflects a non-contending cycle, not inability to spend.

  4. The Pilot Episode

    Season 1, Episode 1

    Show notes

On "The Pilot Episode" of The Cardinal Sin, Charles (@OnlyCardsFans) and JBIF Stupid Town™ (@johnrabe) dig into Chaim Bloom’s latest sermon on patience, take a deep dive in Oli Marmol’s decisions, prospects who’ve been “developing” longer than most marriages last, and a bullpen so catastrophic that lighting the entire thing on fire would actually improve them.

The front office says be patient.

The standings say seek professional help.
