The Corpse Cast episode 399 - Halloween Extravaganza 2026! - Hollowgate (1988) and Hack-O-Lantern (1988)
Episode 399
Show notes
Halloween movies are supposed to be scary, not gloriously unhinged, but this episode proves the best October watches are often the ones that make zero sense. Mike and Matt kick off their Halloween extravaganza with two cursed cult oddities from 1988 - and by the time they are done, you will never look at pink wigs, scarecrow fences, or a basement Satan closet the same way again.
Mike frames the season with his essential Halloween watchlist, while Matt does what he does best: shredding bad movie logic with hilarious precision. Together they break down the bizarre fever dream that is Hollow Gate, a Trauma Team oddity with a ridiculous timeline, a clown who hates Halloween, and a killer who treats every costume change like a new murder mode. Then they go deep on Hack O'Lantern, where Grandpa Drindle, a satanic family feud, and one of the strangest Halloween party setups ever put on film turn into pure late-80s madness.
You will discover:
-Why Hollow Gate feels like a shot-on-video nightmare that somehow became essential seasonal viewing
-The exact kind of bad dialogue, awkward acting, and costume-shop nonsense that makes these movies so memorable
-How Hack O'Lantern turns pumpkins, occult rituals, and family drama into a gloriously weird slasher
-Why High Pike's Grandpa Drindle steals every scene he is in
-What makes these films less polished than the classics, but way more fun to talk about
-They also revisit Halloween staples like Night of the Demons, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Trick or Treat, and more, arguing over the best fall movie energy the weirdest 80s movie behavior, and why old genre actors brought a level of chaos modern horror just cannot fake. If you love offbeat horror, cult cinema, and comedy th at comes from watching grown adults make the worst possible decisions, this episode is your October jackpot.
-Perfect for horror fans who crave deep-cut Halloween movies, cult film junkies, and anyone who thinks the best seasonal tradition is laughing at something that is absolutely trying its hardest.

Episode 307
Show notes
On this episode of The Corpse Cast, Mike Cadaver and Matt Wall dive into two slices of late-'90s horror mayhem: Wishmaster (1997) and Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999).
We take a look at the original film's wonderfully nasty practical effects, the memorable horror cameos, Andrew Divoff's performance as the terrifying Djinn, and what made Wishmaster such a fun addition to the '90s horror landscape. Then we crack open Wishmaster 2 and see what happens when the Djinn gets even more freedom to cause supernatural chaos.
We'll talk story, effects, performances, favorite moments, horror cameos, and whether the sequel manages to live up to the original—or simply decides to have a lot more fun with the concept.

The Corpse Cast Episode 396 - Sam Neill Tribute - In the Mouth of Madness (1994) & Event Horizon (1999)
Episode 396
Show notes
This week on The Corpse Cast, Mike and Matt pay tribute to the late, great Sam Neill by revisiting two of his best horror performances: John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness and Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon.
Most people will always remember Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park, but horror fans know he had one hell of a genre résumé. And these two movies show exactly why he was so effective in horror.
In In the Mouth of Madness, Neill plays skeptical insurance investigator John Trent, a man convinced that everything has a rational explanation—right up until reality itself begins falling apart around him.
Then in Event Horizon, he plays Dr. William Weir, creator of an experimental gravity drive that sent a spaceship somewhere mankind was never meant to go… and brought something terrible back with it.
We talk about John Carpenter’s cosmic horror, the Lovecraft influence, Sutter Cane, the ending of In the Mouth of Madness, the infamous lost footage from Event Horizon, whether the Event Horizon actually traveled to Hell, and why Sam Neill was so damn good at playing intelligent, rational men who eventually discover that reality is much worse than they ever imagined.
Join us as we raise a glass to Sam Neill — 1947–2026.
Thanks for all the dinosaurs, madness, demons, and nightmares.

Episode 395

EVIL DEAD RISE vs. EVIL DEAD BURN – The New Era of Evil Dead | The Corpse Cast
The Deadites are back… and apparently they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
This week on The Corpse Cast, Mike and Matt dig into the two newest chapters in the Evil Dead universe: Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead Burn.
We talk about how the franchise has evolved from the cabin-in-the-woods insanity of Sam Raimi’s original films into the much darker, nastier version of Evil Dead we’re getting today. How well does Rise hold up a few years later? Does Burn feel like an Evil Dead movie, or is the franchise becoming something completely different? And just how much blood, bodily trauma, and Deadite mayhem can two grown men reasonably discuss in one podcast?
**DON’T READ THE BOOK OUT LOUD.**

Episode 389
Show notes
This week on The Corpse Cast, we dive into a double feature of ooze, obsession, and full-blown body horror. We’re discussing the cult classic The Stuff and the modern nightmare The Substance to explore one disturbing question: what happens when the promise of perfection starts consuming you?
First, we dig into the bizarre 1980s satire from Larry Cohen, where a mysterious dessert sweeps the nation and turns consumer culture into a literal feeding frenzy. Then we jump into Coralie Fargeat’s brutal and stylish body-horror spectacle about youth, beauty, and the horrifying cost of trying to become a “better” version of yourself.
From killer yogurt to identity-splitting chemicals, we break down the grotesque transformations, the social commentary behind both films, and why body horror continues to be one of the most effective ways to explore our fears about control, aging, and the commodification of the human body.

The Corpse Cast Episode 386 - Eastern European Folk Horror - Leptirica 1973 and Viy 1967
Episode 386
Show notes
Join your undead hosts Mike Cadaver and Matt Wall as we dig deep into the shadowy roots of Eastern European folk horror, where ancient superstitions, rural dread, and nightmarish creatures lurk just beyond the village lights.
This time we're exhuming two pioneering classics from behind the Iron Curtain:
Then we cross into Yugoslavian territory with **Leptirica (1973)** (aka *The She-Butterfly*), a made-for-TV Serbian gem directed by Đorđe Kadijević and often hailed as the first true horror film from the region. Drawing from Milovan Glišić's 19th-century vampire story *After Ninety Years*, it follows a young man who must prove his worth by spending a night in a cursed mill haunted by the infamous folkloric vampire Sava Savanović. Things get hairy (literally) with monstrous nocturnal attacks, a transformative she-vampire, stakes through the heart, and a creeping atmosphere soaked in Slavic rural paranoia and folklore. It's raw, eerie, and ferociously cynical—think early folk horror with teeth.
Secondly we dig into the Soviet masterpiece Viy (1967)—directed by Konstantin Yershov and Georgi Kropachyov, and based on Nikolai Gogol's chilling tale. A wayward seminary student finds himself trapped in a remote church, reciting prayers over the corpse of a beautiful young woman... who turns out to be a vengeful witch with a taste for revenge. Expect hypnotic flights across moonlit fields, demonic visions, and the terrifying titular Viy—a monstrous spirit whose gaze no mortal can withstand. This one's a wild blend of Gothic fantasy, dark folklore, and surreal visuals that still feels fresh and frightening today.
Grab your holy water (or rakija), light a candle, and come get buried in Eastern European folk horror with us. Don't blink... or the Viy might see you.
