The Dog Who Asked for More: Understanding Life With Your Dog Beyond Dog Training and Behavior
Are you tired of dog training advice that gives you one more thing to try but still leaves you wondering what you're missing?
If you've followed the advice, learned everything you can, and still can't figure out what actually makes sense for the dog in front of you, this podcast is for you.
Named Sniffspot's #1 Dog Training Podcast in 2026 and ranked in the top 3% of podcasts globally. This is the dog community for people who love their dogs deeply and want to understand them without feeling like there's always another problem they need to fix.
I'm Em. Former vet tech, dog trainer, and canine nutritionist. I went looking for a dog community that actually understood how complicated life with dogs can be and kept finding gatekeeping, judgment, and people who'd decided their way was the only way. So I built the space I couldn't find.
Listen, and you'll learn how to:
- Better understand the dog in front of you instead of chasing one-size-fits-all advice
- Use what you already know and get curious about what you might be missing
- Start trusting the decisions you make and adjust when your dog gives you new information
- Look at the whole dog through training, behavior, nutrition, enrichment, health, and environment
- Feel less alone in the grief, burnout, uncertainty, and messy parts of life with dogs
Solo episodes, guest conversations, and real stories covering dog training, dog behavior, dog reactivity, dog nutrition, dog enrichment, dog health, dog body language, pet loss, senior dogs, and the parts of life with dogs no one really prepares you for.

How Waiting for Your Dogs to Get Along Could Turn Tension Into Fighting | Dog Behavior
Episode 265
Show notes
Your older dog snaps at your younger dog. You brace every time they're in the same room. And everyone keeps telling you to give them time. But how long are you supposed to wait before you know something needs to change?
Some dogs really do need time to figure each other out. But when tension between two dogs keeps happening, it can be difficult to tell whether you're watching normal dog behavior or a problem that needs more support. And waiting isn't always the answer.
You'll hear:
β’ Why Toby and Fitz taking two and a half years to find their rhythm didn't mean management was no longer necessary
β’ What can separate normal communication between dogs from conflict that may need more support
β’ Why noticing whether tension is easing, staying the same, or escalating matters more than simply waiting for your dogs to get alongPress play if you've been watching tension between your dogs and wondering whether they need more time or whether it's time to get help.

Why Shame Around Dog Muzzles and Kennels Can Put Your Dog at Risk | Dog Culture
Episode 264
Show notes
You know the muzzle helps. You know the kennel works. So why do you still catch yourself explaining, defending, or even hiding the tools that make life easier for your dog?
Muzzles, kennels, and gates can make everyday life safer and less stressful. But when other people see danger, punishment, or failed dog training where you see safety and support, even the right management decision can start to feel like something you need to apologize for.
You'll hear:
β’ Why helpful management tools like muzzles, kennels, and gates can become something dog parents feel pressured to explain
β’ How other people's assumptions can change the way you feel about decisions you know are right for your dog
β’ Why using management doesn't mean dog training has failed and can be exactly what helps your dog succeedPress play if you've ever found yourself apologizing for something that helps your dog before anyone even asked you to explain it.

What Your Dog's Training Plan Might Be Missing When Nothing Seems to Work
Episode 263
Show notes
When a dog is terrified, knowing how to help them can feel anything but straightforward. And when a training approach doesn't seem to be working, how do you decide what to try next?
Dog trainer William Garrido shares the story of Sophia, one of the most fearful dogs he'd ever worked with, and his decision to use a controversial training approach after earlier attempts hadn't helped. We also talk about Fitz, whose experience with different training tools led me in a very different direction.
You'll hear:
β’ Why Sophia's extreme fear challenged William's assumptions about dog training
β’ How Sophia and Fitz responded differently to the approaches their trainers tried
β’ What their stories reveal about the importance of observing your dog's behavior rather than assuming one approach will work for every dogPress play for a conversation about fearful dogs, difficult training decisions, and why understanding the individual dog matters when you're trying to figure out what comes next.

How Trying to Help Your Dogs Get Along Could Make Their Conflict Worse
Episode 262
Show notes
You know the plan isn't working. Everyone is more stressed, you're constantly managing the fallout, and yet changing course somehow feels harder than trying one more time.
When consistency gets treated like the answer to every dog training problem, walking away from a plan can feel like admitting you didn't try hard enough. But sometimes the thing keeping you and your dog stuck isn't a lack of effort. It's the pressure to make the original plan succeed, even when it's making life harder.
You'll hear:
β’ Why changing a dog training or management plan that isn't working doesn't mean you've given up on your dog
β’ How trying different setups with Fitz and Ernie eventually led to a solution that created less stress for everyone
β’ Why new information can be a reason to change course instead of proof that you made the wrong decisionPress play if you've ever kept trying to make a plan work because stopping felt too much like failing your dog.

Why Your Dog's Training Seems to Fall Apart After Taking a Break
Episode 261
Show notes
Your dog knew how to do this. They've done it dozens of times. So why does one hesitant session suddenly make it feel like all your dog training progress has disappeared?
When something changes, even something small, your dog may need time to get comfortable again. But when a skill that once looked easy suddenly becomes difficult, it's easy to assume you're back at the beginning.
You'll hear:
β’ Why hesitation after a break or change doesn't automatically mean your dog has forgotten what they learned
β’ How Fitz's nail filing changes when a new board or time away makes something familiar feel different
β’ How smaller steps can help your dog rebuild confidence without treating one difficult day like a complete setbackPress play if one difficult training session has ever made you wonder whether all the progress you've worked for was suddenly gone.

How Getting a Second Puppy Could Make Your First Puppy's Problems Worse
Episode 260
Show notes
One puppy already has you exhausted. Getting them a playmate can sound like the perfect way to take some of that energy off your plate.
But bringing home a second puppy doesn't automatically make raising the first one easier. Two puppies close in age can mean twice the training, twice the management, and challenges you never expected, especially when they become more dependent on each other than comfortable being apart.
You'll hear:
β’ Why adding a second puppy can make the dog training problems you're already struggling with harder
β’ What people call littermate syndrome and how it can affect puppies who aren't actually siblings
β’ How separate training, walks, and everyday experiences can help two young dogs build confidence independentlyPress play if you're considering a second puppy to make life easier or already raising two young dogs and wondering why everything suddenly feels harder.

Why Your Dog Doesnβt Need to Learn to Handle Everything
Episode 258
Show notes

Halloween brings that pressure out fast. Doorbells, costumes, kids, strangers, and plenty of advice about getting your dog ready for all of it. Sometimes the better question is whether they need to participate at all.
You'll hear:
β’ Why skipping something isn't automatically the same as giving up on your dog
β’ Why Em stopped treating Halloween as something Fitz needed to learn to handle
β’ The question to ask before turning another difficult situation into a training projectPress play if you've ever felt guilty for protecting your dog from something instead of teaching them to tolerate it.

How Dog Products Change When Brands Actually Listen to Pet Parents
Episode 251
Show notes
Buying something for your dog is easy. Knowing whether itβs actually worth your money is the harder part.
Some of the most useful details about a product never become the headline on the package. At SuperZoo, I talked with the people behind a wide range of dog brands about what theyβve learned after their products reached real customers, including the feedback that changed what they make and the features people often donβt discover until after they buy.
You'll hear:
β’ How feedback from dog parents has influenced products that are on shelves today
β’ Overlooked features and unexpected uses that could make products you already buy more useful
β’ What brand founders and representatives think dog parents should understand before choosing where to spend their moneyPress play if you want to hear what dog brands wish you knew before their products ended up in your cart.

Why Doubting the Life You Built Around Your Dog Doesnβt Mean You Got It Wrong
Episode 250
Show notes
Building your life around your dog can feel completely right and still leave room for the question you donβt always want to ask: Did I make the right call?
Big decisions rarely come with proof that everything is going to work out. When your work, finances, routines, and future have all been shaped by the dog beside you, even seeing those choices pay off doesnβt always make the uncertainty disappear.
You'll hear:
β’ Why loving the life you built doesnβt automatically stop you from questioning the decisions that got you there
β’ What happened when the parts of my life I was most afraid to rely on became the things that carried me through
β’ Why uncertainty doesnβt necessarily mean you chose wrong, even when thereβs no guarantee about what happens nextPress play if your dog has changed the direction of your life and you still sometimes wonder if you got it right.

Why More Exercise Isnβt Helping Your Dog Settle
Episode 249
Show notes
You did the long walk. You played fetch until your arm gave out. And somehow your dog is still pacing around the house like the day just started.
βTire them outβ sounds like good advice when your dog has endless energy, but more activity doesnβt always lead to a calmer dog. Sometimes the thing youβre doing to wear them out is actually winding them up even more, leaving you exhausted and your dog still unable to settle.
You'll hear:
β’ Why doing more exercise and activity can leave your dog more wired instead of more tired
β’ How the type of activity you choose can change what happens after the game, walk, or play session ends
β’ What I had to change with Fitz when throwing the ball longer and doing more wasnβt getting us any closer to calmPress play if you keep trying to tire your dog out and canβt figure out why they still wonβt settle.

What Pet Creators See Behind the Scenes That Pet Parents Donβt
Episode 248
Show notes
The creators you trust the most have opinions about this industry they don't usually put in a caption.
At Superzoo in August, instead of collecting swag and taking panel photos, three questions got asked to creator after creator, not the polished, brand-deal-ready answers you see on Instagram, but the real ones. What brand would they actually recommend if nobody was paying them to say it. What myth about training, nutrition, or behavior got busted for them personally. And what's happening behind the scenes in this industry that never makes it into a caption. Nobody had to be honest. They could have given the pitch. They didn't.
You'll hear:
β’ The specific brands and products creators actually stand behind, the ones they'd recommend even without a partnership attached
β’ The training, nutrition, and behavior myths that got busted for people who work in this space every day, and what changed their minds
β’ What multiple creators admitted about this being a business first, even when the content doesn't feel like onePress play if you've ever scrolled through dog content wondering which recommendations were real and which ones were paid for.

How Task Training at Home Can Give You the Wrong Idea About Service Dog Potential
Episode 247
Show notes
Your dog can learn the tasks perfectly at home and still not be capable of doing the job of a service dog.
I wanted Fitz to be a service dog badly enough to train him myself. He learned real tasks, including retrieval, deep pressure therapy, and migraine alerts. At home, he was good at them. Then we went out in public, and the dog I hoped he could become collided with the dog actually standing in front of me. Because learning the tasks is only one part of what a service dog has to be able to do.
You'll hear:
β’ Why a dog can successfully learn service dog tasks at home and still struggle with what the job requires in public
β’ What happened when I had to separate what I needed Fitz to become from what he was actually capable of
β’ Why changing the plan doesn't mean the training was wasted or that your dog failedPress play if you've ever looked at your dog and wondered if they could become a service dog, or had to accept that what you hoped they could do wasn't what they were actually capable of.

What You Gain When You Stop Chasing the Life Everyone Else Expects for Your Dog | Dog Training
Episode 246
Show notes
There's a version of your life with this dog that you pictured a while back. It doesn't look anything like the one you're actually living now, and somehow that's become other people's business.
At some point you stopped going to the places that used to be part of every week together, without ever deciding it in one clear moment. You just noticed what actually worked for your dog and kept doing that instead. People who only see the outside of it tend to have an opinion either way, and it rarely matches what building this actually took. You can be completely at peace with how you live now and still catch yourself defending it anyway.
You'll hear:
β’ The surprising reason a dog can be perfectly fine with strangers but bark at the people he already knows, and what that has to do with his past
β’ The two contradicting comments that show up no matter which way you go, and why neither one is actually about your dog
β’ The moment that turns "I gave something up" into "I built something that fits," and how to tell which one you're actually standing inPress play if you've ever had to explain a life that makes complete sense to you and to no one else in the room.
