The Film Flamers: A Horror Movie Podcast

Strangers on a Train is a 1951 American psychological thriller film noir produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and adapted by Raymond Chandler and Czenzi Ormonde from the 1950 novel by Patricia Highsmith. Starring Farley Granger, Ruth Roman and Robert Walker, the story concerns two strangers who meet on a train, one of whom is a psychopath who suggests that they "exchange" murders so that neither will be caught. The film’s score was composed by Dimitri Tiomkin.

Grab your crucifix and run for the hills, because Ken Russell’s legendary 1971 holy-terror freakout, The Devils, has finally crawled out of the censor's vault and hit theaters in its glorious, unrated, decades-forbidden glory. Starring Vanessa Redgrave as a sexually repressed, deeply unhinged nun and Oliver Reed as a swaggering priest who loves sin way too much, this unhinged cinematic acid-trip tells the true-ish story of a 17th-century French town losing its collective mind over witchcraft and mass hysteria. In this episode, we're diving headfirst into the blasphemous, wildly theatrical chaos that terrified movie studios so badly they tried to bury it for over thirty years—and why this glorious middle finger to (every) establishment still rules today.

The film was adapted by Hume Cronyn with a screenplay by Arthur Laurents. Starring James Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger, this is the first of Hitchcock's Technicolor films and is notable for taking place in real time and being edited so as to appear as four long shots through the use of stitched-together long takes It is the second of Hitchcock's "limited setting" films, the first being Lifeboat (1944).

Friday the 13th VI: Jason Lives is a 1986 American slasher film written and directed by Tom McLoughlin, and starring Thom Mathews, Jennifer Cooke, David Kagen, and C.J. Graham. It was the final film to feature Tommy Jarvis as the protagonist and marked Tony Goldwyn's film debut. Continuing from the events of the previous film, the plot follows Tommy after he accidentally resurrects mass murderer Jason Voorhees while attempting to destroy his body to ensure that he will not return. While Jason returns to Crystal Lake for another killing spree, Tommy must overcome his fear of the masked killer that has haunted him for years and find a way to stop him once and for all. The film’s score was again composed by Henry Manfedini.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a 2003 steampunk superhero flick that pulls characters from the first volume of Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's comic series - though honestly, the plot goes off in its own direction and barely resembles the source material. Stephen Norrington (of Blade fame) directed it from a screenplay by comic book and sometime-screenplay writer James Dale Robinson, and the cast includes Sean Connery, Peta Wilson, Naseeruddin Shah, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng, and Richard Roxburgh. It's notable for being Connery's last role in a theatrically released live-action movie before he retired in 2006 (he passed away in 2020). Trevor Jones handled the score.

V For Vendetta is a 2005 dystopian thriller film directed by James McTeigue from a screenplay by the Wachowskis. It was McTeigue's directorial debut and is based on the 1988–89 DC Vertigo Comics limited series graphic novel V for Vendetta by Alan Moore, David Lloyd, and Tony Weare. The cast includes Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea and John Hurt. The film, which is set in a future where a fascist totalitarian regime has subjugated the United Kingdom, centres on V, a masked vigilante who attempts to ignite a revolution, and Evey Hammond, a young woman caught up in V's plot.
