Wallabies v England, All Blacks at Murrayfield & Rennie Wasn’t Happy | Nations Championship Preview
Show notes
The Nations Championship kicks off up north this week, and World Cup winner Mike Tindall joins Jeremy Paul, Kieran Read and Justin Marshall to preview the Wallabies v England at Twickenham.
Tins tells JP his greatest asset is enthusiasm (“realism, not so much”), explains the pressure on Steve Borthwick and England’s yellow-card problem, gives his take on the high-scoring Prem and the driving maul, and asks whether the northern game really needs the Nations Championship. He also shares the story of JP’s season at Gloucester, where the questions to the forwards coach went on so long the session was over before anything physical happened.
Then the boys turn to the All Blacks: South Africa’s tough tour north, Scotland at Murrayfield (and whether they’ll go into their shell again), Wales 70 years without a win, and why Dave Rennie still wasn’t happy after 93 points in two Bledisloe tests.

No Defence, No Fight: JP Goes Off on the Wallabies
Show notes
The Bledisloe series is done, and it ended with the All Blacks running riot over the Wallabies in Sydney. Andy Rowe, Kieran Read, Justin Marshall and Jeremy Paul start by paying tribute to young South African lock Hyron Andrews, then look at the rugby world rallying behind Nathan Charles, including the All Blacks’ special haka in the sheds.
JP is back and fired up about the Wallabies’ defence. That kicks off a big debate on structure versus character. The boys also cover Beauden Barrett’s comeback, Fabian Holland and Scott Barrett running the engine room, Peter Lakai’s rise, the loose forward mix, and whether Damian McKenzie is the long-term 10 or 15. They finish with a preview of the Nations Championship as the northern tour approaches.

11 Men, 1 iPhone & a Famous Win: Wallabies Stun the Boks 42-38
Show notes
The Wallabies beat the Springboks 42-38 in Perth, and they finished the game with only 11 men on the field. Andy is joined by Wallaby Jeremy Paul and former All Black Justin Marshall for a quick reaction to one of the strangest Test matches ever played.
JP is thrilled and a bit shaken. Marshy calls Andy out for jumping on the bandwagon. The boys look at Len Ikitau's world-class return at 13, the TMO comms failure that had the referee taking calls on a mobile phone, and four Wallabies in the bin at once. They also cover Rassie's call to bring on eight replacements together, Harry Wilson's captaincy and choice to take the points, and why the Boks couldn't use a four-man advantage to win it.
Marshy gives his common-sense fix for refereeing without a TMO. Plus Fraser McReight's big game, and a look ahead to the Bledisloe Cup opener at Eden Park.

"It's Dangerous as Hell" Jeremy Paul Unloads on Rugby's New Scrum Rule | Boks Take the Series 3-1

Four tests, four weeks, 49 players — and the All Blacks come home 3-1 down. Kieran Read and Jeremy Paul are back in studio with Andy to work out what actually separated the two sides, and whether the gap is as big as the scoreline says.JP returns from a holiday that involved two kids in hospital, eleven days in Bali and the Jonah Lomu premiere — including the small matter of the try Jonah took off him in the 2000 Bledisloe.
Kieran breaks down the blueprint from test one that the All Blacks couldn't repeat: parity at set piece, holding the line, and taking the pressure without giving away the penalties that let the Springboks kick their way up the park. Eight penalty goals to zero across the series tells its own story.
Then it gets loud. Andy reads out All Blacks assistant coach Neil Barnes' post-match comments on the refereeing, and JP launches into a full-blooded rant about the new brake foot ruling at scrum time — why he thinks it's dangerous, what referees should actually be looking at, and the simple fix nobody in World Rugby has landed on.
Plus: the selection calls that didn't land, Reuben Love and Cam Roigard as the long-term 9-10, whether Ardie Savea is being used properly, Jordie Barrett's claim as the world's best 12, Ethan Blackadder's return, and JP making the case that a Les Kiss Wallabies side beats the Springboks in Perth — and then the All Blacks at Eden Park.

Tamaiti Williams on the Superbug That Ate His Spine | And Where to now for the All Blacks
Show notes
Secure your entire digital life with Surfshark — get 4 extra months free: https://surfshark.com/gbr (code: GBR) | 30-day money-back guarantee Four months in a hospital bed. Four screws in his spine. Eighteen kilos gone. And the first thing the doctors told him was that he might never walk again. All Blacks and Crusaders prop Tamaiti Williams sits down with Andy and Kieran Read for his most open interview yet on the illness that stopped his season dead. Not an injury — an illness. An MRSA superbug that settled in his back and, as he puts it, burned him out from the inside like a tree on fire. He takes us through the night he was rolling around in 10-out-of-10 pain arguing with his wife not to go to hospital, the spinal fusion, coming off morphine, the panic attacks, and where his comeback actually sits right now (no date — but he’s been cleared to run, with day one of pre-season in November). Then Tamaiti puts his front-row hat back on to break down the Springbok scrum: what makes Ox Nché so hard to hold, why mindset is half the battle, and why he’d meet fire with fire rather than run from it. Justin Marshall joins live from South Africa after the third Test at Soccer City — a Test he reckons was the real decider. Marshy on where the game slipped away, what Dave Rennie said to him at full-time, and a firm answer to the question everyone’s asking: are the All Blacks in danger of becoming rugby’s version of Bazball? Kieran Read on Rassie's F-Bombs, the Mind Games and the Third Test
Show notes
The All Blacks lost the second test in Cape Town but were they actually that bad?
Andy Rowe is joined by former All Blacks captain and two-time Rugby World Cup winner Kieran Read to break down a game that turned on two minutes at the start and an aerial battle the All Blacks still can't win.
Read explains the untidy exit that had New Zealand seven points down inside two minutes, why the Springboks changed their defensive picture (14 in the line, nobody hunting the ruck) and what that means for the way the All Blacks attack. Plus the accuracy numbers: South Africa took 4.8 points from every 22 entry, New Zealand just 2.8 from nine.
There's the 2009 parallel (Matfield, box kicks and the series that changed how New Zealand played the game) and why the All Blacks are still catching high balls the old-school way. Pieter-Steph du Toit's 100th test. Then there's Rassie. The suit and tie, the team sheet handed over half an hour before kickoff, the F-bombs in the press conference and the complaint that the All Blacks are planting seeds in the media (from the man who put out an hour-long video on the referees during the Lions series). Read's take: "coaches have been doing this for a long time, but Rassie is the absolute king of it." Plus the scrum row it all came from: "we're not walking around, we're scrumming." And what changes for the third test, including Sam Darry, a six-two bench and where Rieko Ioane fits.
Over the Tasman, the Wallabies win 27-21 in Argentina, Les Kiss loosens the structure, and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii starts on the bench — would you put him on the All Blacks wing to catch our high balls?

"It's Psychotic Over Here" | All Blacks Stun Springboks at Ellis Park
Show notes
The All Blacks have gone to Ellis Park and won five tries to one and Marshy was standing in the middle of it. This week Andy is joined by Justin Marshall live from Johannesburg, still dusty, still 30 years on from '96, and Kieran Read in studio after a 3am alarm and a duvet on the couch with his boy. They break down how the All Blacks were under the pump for 40 minutes and still walked off with a scoreline that flattered them, the three unnoticed effort plays that swung the whole test, and why nobody in that squad celebrated like the job was done. Then Marshy finally does some homework and brings in former Springbok World Cup winning captain John Smit, who watched from the stands next to Francois Louw. He's honest about what he saw, the scrum that should have won it, the unforced errors he hasn't seen from this Springbok side in years, and what Rassie might do in Cape Town. He also explains what this tour has done to South Africa: green shirts every Friday, nothing getting done, and for the first time in the country's broadcasting history, more people watching rugby than football. Plus: the points-per-22-entry stat the coaches are obsessed with, why Fabian Holland has become crucial, whether George Bower has forced a start, and a proper appreciation for Matt Carley telling the TMO no. The Blueprint To Beat The Springboks | Kieran Read & Justin Marshall
Show notes
Justin Marshall joins us live from Pretoria, three tour games deep, one week out from Ellis Park and the mood in South Africa is exactly as cocky as you'd fear. Andy, Kieran Read and Marshy get into the arrogance ("if the All Blacks draw the series, that's a result for THEM"), why South African rugby is booming from schoolboy level up, and the recruitment problem that's got them worried about 13-year-olds on retainers. Then the serious business: how the All Blacks are actually tracking after three from three, the injury watch on Will Jordan, Cam Roigard and Damian McKenzie, the loose forward puzzle, whether lineout height should be driving selection, why Argentina handed us the blueprint for beating the Boks and why a Springbok side that's short of minutes might be more vulnerable at altitude than anyone's saying. ALL BLACKS SQUAD for SOUTH AFRICA: Who Plays Fullback? Kirifi & Hotham Unlucky
Show notes
The All Blacks squad to tour South Africa is out and the boys have questions. Seven wingers but no out-and-out fullback, only three halfbacks, five injury-prone locks, and Damian McKenzie named at first five but destined for the back field. Justin Marshall and Kieran Read drop into what it's actually like touring the Republic: altitude, boot parties, beer cans at the bus, and why four Tests in a row is like playing four finals. Plus: Ethan Blackadder back from the wilderness, how to build the loose trio around Ardie Savea, the unlucky ones (Du'Plessis Kirifi, Noah Hotham), what happens if Richie Mo'unga gets the call, and how you even prep a squad for games every three days. ───────────────────────────── 📑CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro 00:31 First reactions to the squad 02:31 Seven wingers — so who plays fullback? 04:12 Only three halfbacks: Ratima on the bench all tour? 05:02 George Bell and the fourth hooker call 06:31 The lock stocks: injury concerns 08:04 Bench impact — matching the Bomb Squad 10:20 6-2 split or backline flexibility? 15:18 Ethan Blackadder back from the wilderness 17:44 We need our best ball carriers carrying 20:13 Harvey Norman Next Gen Moment: Timoci Tavatavanawai 22:07 The unlucky ones: Kirifi & Hotham 25:44 What the selectors want from their loose forwards 30:54 Building the game plan around Ardie Savea 34:05 The Josh Jacomb surprise 36:48 What if Richie Mo'unga gets the call? 37:58 Playing in South Africa: altitude & atmosphere 41:46 Touring the Republic: boot parties & hospitality 44:52 Games every three days — how do you prep? 46:48 Where should the Test team play? "Just Breathe. We Got This." | Kieran Reid, James O'Connor & Jeremy Paul
Show notes
What separates the teams that win finals from the ones that show up and go through the motions? That's the question at the heart of this week's episode — and All Blacks legend Kieran Reid has some very honest answers. Reado joins the boys in studio fresh off the Hurricanes' quarterfinal demolition of the Brumbies. He breaks down what genuine finals belief looks like from the inside — including the moment Richie McCaw gathered a team that was 19-7 down to Ireland and simply said: "Just breathe. We got this." Then he gives his take on which teams in this year's Super Rugby semifinals have that same DNA. James O'Connor calls in from the UK with massive personal news, an update on his hamstring, and a wide-open future back in Australia. And Jeremy Paul joins from across the Tasman with passionate opinions on where Rabs should land and absolutely no time for anyone who questions whether he's still got it. Plus: Tony Brown confirmed as All Blacks assistant coach, the unsolved number 8 puzzle, Ruben Love's case to be the next ABs 10, and a big announcement for GBRANZ fans in Christchurch. 🎟️ **SUNDAY SESSION — July 5th, Christchurch | Tickets link below** https://www.oldboys.co.nz/viewform/515859 --- CHAPTERS 00:00 — Intro 01:46 — Hurricanes vs Brumbies: what went wrong for the 11 Wallabies 05:19 — The Crusaders formula: what it takes to win ugly 12:27 — "Just breathe.
