Signs You’re a Hack Golfer – Splitting Fairways Episode 15
Show notes
We’ve all played with that golfer. The one who takes three perfect practice swings before chunking the ball 20 yards. Or the guy who has $2,500 worth of equipment in his bag but refuses to spend a dime on lessons. Maybe it’s the golfer who needs an exact yardage from 40 yards out, only to leave the shot 15 yards short.
But here’s the question. Does any of that actually make someone a hack?
In Episode 15 of Splitting Fairways, Ryan “Hawk” and Jeremy “Lord Tox” tackle a subject that might hit a little too close to home for some golfers: Signs You’re a Hack Golfer.
Being a hack isn’t necessarily about your handicap or how well you play. It’s about the habits, accessories, excuses and questionable decisions that make other golfers shake their heads.
And nobody is safe, including us!
What Makes Someone a Hack Golfer?
The best part about this discussion is that there really isn’t a right answer. You can be a scratch golfer and still be a hack. You can shoot 95 and be the best playing partner in the group.
So, what gives someone away as a hack before they even take a swing?
Watch the latest episode of Splitting Fairways and then tell us which habits deserve the label and which ones are completely innocent.
Just remember, before you start pointing fingers, there’s a pretty good chance you’re guilty of at least one yourself.

Are Your Golf Clubs Too Heavy? – Splitting Fairways Episode 14
Show notes
Golfers can be a stubborn bunch, especially when it comes to equipment. We all have preferences, whether it’s a certain shaft flex, clubhead shape, or even the weight of our golf clubs. But what happens when those preferences actually get in the way of better performance?
That’s the question we’re tackling in Episode 14 of Splitting Fairways.
For years, lightweight golf clubs have carried a certain stigma. Mention a 40-gram driver shaft or a 60-gram graphite iron shaft, and plenty of golfers immediately think of equipment designed for seniors or players with slower swing speeds. But is that perception keeping golfers from finding something that could actually improve their games?
Lightweight Golf Clubs vs. Heavier Shafts
This week’s discussion comes from two very different perspectives.
Ryan recently spent time testing the XXIO 14+ lineup, including irons featuring incredibly lightweight 59-gram shafts. The results were surprising, producing some of his fastest iron speeds in the past year without the loss of head awareness you might expect.
Of course, there’s another side to the conversation.
Jeremy generates considerably more swing speed and approaches equipment weight differently. While he prefers iron shafts in the 100–110-gram range, going too light can create issues with timing, tempo, and overall control.
So where is the sweet spot? Is Your Ego Getting in the Way of Better Golf?
That’s where things get interesting.
Are golfers choosing heavier shafts because they genuinely perform better, or because playing something lighter feels like admitting they need help?
The goal isn’t to play lighter golf clubs. It’s to play the right ones.
Tune in to Episode 14 of Splitting Fairways and let us know: Are your golf clubs too heavy?

Does Music Belong on the Golf Course?
Show notes
Bluetooth speakers have become almost as common on the golf course as rangefinders and GPS units. For some golfers, music is simply part of the experience. For others, one of the best parts about playing golf is getting outside and enjoying a few hours without all the extra noise.
So, who is right?
On this episode of Splitting Fairways, Ryan and I debate whether music actually belongs on the golf course. I’m taking the pro-music side, while Ryan would prefer golfers leave the speaker at home. Well…sort of.
Because like most things we discuss, it isn’t quite that simple.
When Does Your Music Become Everyone Else’s Music?
There is a big difference between playing music quietly enough for your cart or foursome to enjoy and making sure the group three fairways over knows exactly what is on your playlist. And maybe that is where the real debate begins.
Does the type of round matter? Music during a Saturday afternoon round with your buddies might feel completely normal, but what about a peaceful 7:00 AM tee time? Like many of golf’s unwritten rules, which we discussed in an earlier episode, there may not be one answer that works for every round or every golfer.
Then we get to perhaps the most important question: Who gets veto power?
If three golfers want music and one wants silence, should the majority win? Or, as Ryan argues, should silence be the default because nobody else should be forced to listen to your music?
Of course, we also have to address one of golf’s greatest crimes: two carts playing two completely different playlists.
Music on the golf course isn’t going anywhere, but that doesn’t mean anything goes. Where should golfers draw the line?
Check out our latest episode of Splitting Fairways and let us know: Are you Team Music or Team Silence?

Does a 15 HDCP need a $60 golf ball?
Show notes
Should a golfer shooting 90’s really spend $60 on a dozen golf balls?
That question is at the center of our latest episode of Splitting Fairways, recorded from the THP Titleist Golf Ball Experience at Hidden Creek Golf Club in New Jersey.
Does Handicap Really Matter?
There are plenty of shortcuts golfers use when picking a golf ball. Slower swing speed means play something soft. Higher handicaps shouldn’t waste money on premium balls. Faster players need something that spins less.
The problem is that golf ball fitting isn’t necessarily that simple.
Ryan and I have considerably different swing speeds, yet we both tend to benefit from a similar higher-flight, higher-full-swing-spin profile. We arrive there for different reasons, which raises a bigger question: Should golfers choose a ball based on handicap and swing speed, or what their game actually needs?
When Does a $60 Golf Ball Make Sense?
Maybe the better question isn’t whether a 15 handicap should play a $60 golf ball. It’s how many golf balls do you actually go through?
And maybe most importantly, why playing the same golf ball might matter more than playing the most expensive one.
What do you think? Should a 15 hdcp be playing a $60 golf ball? Let us know in the comments, we would love to hear your thoughts.

Did LIV Golf Actually Win? | Splitting Fairways Episode 11
Show notes
For more than four years, LIV Golf disrupted professional golf in a way few could have imagined. Billions of dollars were spent, some of the biggest names in the game left the PGA Tour, and the sport became increasingly divided between two competing sides.
Now, LIV Golf has entered Chapter 11 restructuring, and that brings us to a question that isn’t quite as simple as it sounds.
Did LIV Golf actually win?
In this episode of Splitting Fairways, Ryan and Jeremy look beyond the bankruptcy headlines to debate what LIV actually accomplished and what its impact could mean for professional golf long after the original version of the league is gone.
Did LIV Change the PGA Tour?
From a business standpoint, LIV’s original model clearly ran into problems. But judging its success strictly by whether the league became sustainable may miss part of the story.
The PGA Tour that exists today looks different from the one LIV challenged in 2022. Bigger purses, Signature Events and the Player Equity Program all became part of the landscape during the battle between the two sides.
Would those changes have happened without LIV?
That’s where the debate gets interesting. LIV may have failed as a league while succeeding as a disruptor.
What About the Players?
Then there are the golfers who left.
For years, the easy criticism was that LIV players simply “took the money.” Chapter 11 complicates that argument, with LIV seeking the ability to reject existing player contracts and some contractual obligations still outstanding.
Jon Rahm may be the most fascinating example. He left the PGA Tour in his prime and proceeded to win three consecutive LIV season-long individual championships. Yet, how many golf fans could name those accomplishments?
That raises a much bigger question about legacy. What might Rahm’s career look like had those same three seasons played out on the PGA Tour?
Bryson DeChambeau presents almost the opposite case. A U.S. Open victory, strong major performances and his enormous growth as a golf personality arguably strengthened his overall legacy.
Who Won the Golf War?
Should Rahm, DeChambeau and other LIV stars eventually be welcomed back to the PGA Tour? Should there be consequences for leaving? And when their careers are over, how much will LIV accomplishments matter?
Maybe LIV changed professional golf. Maybe the PGA Tour survived. Maybe some players won financially.
But after years of fractured fields and division throughout the sport, did golf fans actually win?

Splitting Fairways Episode 10: Are Golf Courses Too Easy?
Show notes
Golf courses have never looked better. Fairways are striped, greens are smooth, bunkers are freshly raked and golfers have come to expect consistent conditions almost everywhere they play.

On Episode 10 of Splitting Fairways, Hawk and Jeremy debate whether modern golf courses do enough to punish bad shots and, more importantly, where that punishment should actually come from.

Splitting Fairways Episode 9: The Definitive Loft Jacking Debate
Show notes
Few topics get golfers fired up quite like loft jacking. Iron lofts have become stronger over the years, leading to plenty of comments about a modern 7-iron really being a 6-iron. But is looking at the number on the bottom of the club really that simple?
In Episode 9 of Splitting Fairways, Hawk and Jeremy tackle the loft-jacking debate and why stronger lofts aren’t necessarily good or bad.
Why Have Iron Lofts Become Stronger?
Modern iron construction has changed dramatically. Hollow-body designs, thinner faces, lower centers of gravity, and improved materials have allowed manufacturers to create irons that produce more ball speed while still launching the ball high enough to be playable.
For Hawk, that combination of added distance and forgiveness can be a major benefit. If a stronger-lofted 7-iron launches high, carries farther, and still has enough stopping power to hold a green, does it really matter what loft is stamped on the spec sheet?
Jeremy looks at things a little differently. As a golfer who already generates plenty of speed, chasing additional distance with an iron can create more problems than it solves. Spin, peak height, distance control, descent angle, and proper gapping throughout the set may be far more important than simply hitting a 7-iron farther.
Does Loft Jacking Really Matter?
Of course, stronger lofts can create other issues. The race to build the longest 7-iron can lead to larger gaps at the bottom of the bag and the need for additional wedges. At the same time, many of these distance-focused irons also provide forgiveness that can make the game easier for a wide range of golfers.
Maybe the loft-jacking debate doesn’t need a winner. Instead of worrying about whether your 7-iron has the loft of an old 6-iron, the better question might be whether it produces the launch, spin, height, forgiveness, consistency, and distance your game actually needs.
The loft-jacking debate is officially over. Well, at least until the comments open.

Splitting Fairways Episode 8: Golf’s Unwritten Rules
Show notes
Golf has plenty of official rules, but somehow, golfers have invented an entirely separate rulebook of things you’re just supposed to know. In Episode 08 of Splitting Fairways, Hawk and Tox take on Golf’s Dumbest Unwritten Rules and try to figure out where legitimate etiquette ends and pointless golf judgment begins.
Hats indoors. Untucked shirts. Denim. Changing your shoes in the parking lot. Too many headcovers. 14-way bags. And, of course, the undisputed heavyweight champion of unnecessary golf arguments: iron covers. If none of these things affect another golfer’s round, why does anyone care? Ryan (Hawk) and Jeremy (Lord Tox) debate which traditions still have a place in the game, and which ones golfers need to stop taking so seriously.
Then they head to the course to tackle the unwritten rules that might actually matter. Should honors on the tee give way to ready golf? Is talking to someone else’s ball harmless encouragement or an unforgivable offense? Can you call a putt before it drops? And do you really need to gently place the flagstick on the green?
Not every unwritten rule deserves to disappear. Repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers, keeping pace, respecting another player’s concentration, and taking care of the course all make golf better for everyone. Maybe that’s the real test, the best etiquette usually makes golf better for somebody other than you.
If you could erase one unwritten rule from golf tomorrow, which one goes?
